My daughter is back from college for a few weeks so I took the whole family to Superdawg in Mary Kay. It’s a legitimate old school drive in and hands down the best hot dogs in Chicago. IMG_0888.jpegIMG_0885.jpeg
The car drove beautifully. Was definitely a peak Cadillac event.

Nearly 40 years ago, I was in Chicago on business. The client took me to Ed Debevics, which was great. Wish I'd had a chance to check out SuperDawg - if only I had known about it.

Used to be an Ed Debevics here in Phoenix. Fun place to go. Once the waitress asked my BIL "Are those your legs or are you riding a chicken?"

When I moved to Chicagoland I thought a Chicago style dog and no ketchup sounded horrible. After I tried one... Realized they mught be onto something. Hold the sport peppers on mine.... But its delicious without the ketchup

The Superdawg dawg is a little different than other Chicago hot dogs. It’s spicier and has a pickled green tomato. It really is great as are the Krinkle cut fries. I used to go there all the time in high school and back then it was a great place to watch a drag race from time to time. Here is the menu. IMG_0896.jpeg

Take a left on Elston and we'll race to Cam's Muffler and Brake! Or in winter we can hit the toboggan slides on Devon.
Sadly both gone now, but at least SuperDawg is still going strong.
I remember the drag racing. Cops got smart and would sit and wait right around behind the grocery store to nab the offenders before they could really get going from Devon.

Same at Fluky's. Guys at the Friday night car show would get into whose car was faster, so they would line up at the light at Milwaukee and Greenwood to race it out. Drag race would end abruptly at the gas station across Greenwood when the police car flipped on his lights.

Good times, miss that place. Fluky's used to be a prize sponsor for the Bozo Circus too.

Car is looking good, and cruise nights are almost here!

I love this.

One of the good things about taking out a car like Mary Kay is that it genuinely brightens people's day when they see it. Kids point. Young timers wonder what it is. Old timers smile and reminisce.

Thanks Ruxpin, You're right: this is a large part of the appeal of Mary Kay. The way we use her - which is to say usually driving slowly on city streets, with the top down and the radio off (the radio hasn't worked in probably 20 years) - you can interact with people in other cars or people who are walking by on city streets. I've had expensive sports cars too - and nobody ever talks to you. But if you are in a big fat pink convertible you are accessible - and that can be a lot of fun. Thanks for following along.

I have at least four unfinished projects at the moment: my workbench, my home theater, figuring out how to get my BMW back into my garage and a bunch of landscaping work. I haven’t posted about it here but my wife and I are completely redoing our front yard landscaping. Despite all these I started working today on another project, which at the moment, you guessed it, is unfinished.

I’ve wanted to put together a tool wall for my measurement tools. Until now I’ve had no good place to store them. So I started pulling this together. It will go above the Roubo workbench I’m building.
IMG_0941.jpeg

It’s a simple project. Basically only a picture frame of some maple that I had left over from my workbench and a piece of home depot plywood. I got most of the way done today But could not finish because I decided I want to cover the plywood with the same black laminate I have on my outfeed table. I’ve ordered that from Amason. When it gets here I’ll glue it down, finish the maple frame and finish the remaining tool holders. I’ll hang it and hopefully be able to call at least one of these projects as done.

Happy Memorial Day everyone. It’s been raining most of the day so I’ve been in the workshop trying to shorten the list of unfinished projects. I was able to get the tool wall (cabinet?) largely completed and hung today. I still have a couple of tool holders to complete in the lower right hand corner that I haven’t completely figure out how I want to build yet. The cabinet was hung over my unfinished robot workbench. Eventually I plan to make another similar cabinet to hold my chisels and hand planes that will go to the right of this one. That, however, is a project for another day. IMG_0963.jpeg
As of now I really need to get the workshop cleaned up and then I intend to get back to working on the workbench.

Nice tool walls and holders. What was the recess before you made the tool wall on the right?
That recess used to be a glass block window into the back yard. When we remodeled the house years ago we added on to the back of the house so it became in essence a window into the crawl space under our family room. I’ve used that recess as more of less a shelf to store tools since. There is a similar recess on the adjacent wall that I snuck a miter saw into. Inches count in a city house.

Happy Sunday everyone. I did my first car wash since I built the garage today. I doubt that I go off the deep end of car detailing like some do but I needed to up my game a little bit. I purchased a Kranzle pressure washer, a wall mount vacuum, and a polisher to do some paint correction. Got the BMW clean inside and out. IMG_0996.jpegIMG_0997.jpeg
I hope to try my hand at paint correction next weekend. Will use the Volvo as my test subject as I’ve never done paint correction before and if I screw it up the Volvo is the car I care least about.

Hey everyone. I hope you all are having a nice summer. I haven’t been doing to many garage or workshop projects. Have been spending time on the boat we bought. Also, been enjoying Mary Kay and been going to a few Porsche shows, including one this morning. I have also started washing/ detailing my own cars. This creates the issue of having to figure out how to store the detailing equipment and supplies I’ve bought. I put this together this weekend to mount my new wall mount vacuum. I’m in the process of making a similarly designed cabinet that will go on the opposite wall that will store the new pressure washer and some chemicals and detailing supplies.IMG_1035.jpeg

I‘m Sure you are noticing the huge dent on the vacuum right now. It fell of the wall when I was putting this together. Thankfully it did not hit the car. It still works fine however so I’m going to take it apart and pound out the dents the best I can. Oh well. I’ll post up the power wash cabinet once it get glued up and mounted to the wall.

I made some progress on my power wash station today. The construction is the same as I did to mount the vacuum in the post above- basically BMW M color laminate on Baltic birch plywood. IMG_1051.jpeg
The bottom portion is basically complete. I just ordered a hose reel and when it comes I’ll construct something around the pressure washer that will also be used to mount the hose Reel. I think I’ll also make some larger horizontal shelf to store spray bottles and chemicals for detailing.

Happy Forth of July everyone. I thought I’d share a few updates. First is that some ******* Uber driver rear ended Mary Kay today. IMG_1073.jpegIt was a pretty good hit and there was some damage to his car. And to Mary Kay?IMG_1087.jpeg
Nothing! At least as far as I could tell. Maybe he should have hit it a little harder so I have figured out how to get insurance to pay for a respray that she desperately needs.

I also continued to work on the detailing station. IMG_1085.jpeg
There is some more work to do. Mainly I still need to mount the hose reel I bought.
IMG_1096.jpeg

Will go over the pressure washer. I hope to get that done this weekend. I still need to make a cabinet for spray bottles an$ the like. My plan is to make a lone horizontal cabinet to the right of what is there. Will mount it high enough so that it doesn’t limit the ability to open car doors. I have a tight space and usually park the Porsche tight against this Wall so it’s earlier for me to open the drivers door. IMG_1097.jpeg
I think it will be a couple of weeks at least before I get any chance to work on that. Time as been limited lately both because its summer and you need to take any chance you get to enjoy nice weather when you live in Chicago and also I’ve been a single parent much of June as my wife has had a lot of international work travel. She is actually on a flight home from Wihan China of all places right now.
Cheers as always.

It’s been almost a month since my last update. i actually have not been doing to many garage projects recently. Enjoying the summer I guess. Also saw my daughter in DC last weekend. I also had COVID, I think for the first time.

The only progress of note is that I have finished up my car washing stations. I have two, one on each side of the garage. This side is intended to hold most of the things I need to clean the interior of the car, including the vacuum and its attachments and a shelf for some pressol bottles for glass cleaner and interior cleaner. Also for leather cleaner and protectant. IMG_1136.jpeg
On the other side is the wet station: power washer, rags and again a shelf for pressol bottles of cleaning solutions. I have room here for eleven bottles, which I just ordered from Obsessed Garage. IMG_1118.jpeg
I needed to keep all this stuff fairly narrow against the wall and also up high. The garage is small so I did not want to get more traditional cabinets. I want to keep as much room as I can get to open car doors.

Cheers.

Some progress to report on my Roubo work bench. It’s been slow progress, cutting up my hand really dampened my enthusiasm for working on the the project and I’ve been busy enjoying the summer but been slowly making progress. The front half of the workbench top including the vise is now done. See below. IMG_1151.jpeg
There are only a few more steps before I can call this project complete. I have to mortise both tops so that they can sit on top of the legs. I also have to do a final flattening of both tops and to that end I bought this ridiculously expensive plane.IMG_1150.jpeg
After that I’ll have to decide what finish I want to use and it will be 99% completed. I started this thing three years ago. It will be nice to get it done.
