2024 Garage Sale Thread (13th Annual)

Here is my small haul from another rare garage sale held on a Friday, on the way to work. Quiet neighborhood normally, but it must have been dance class at the nearby school, something blasting out from many houses away. Tools & Fishing Garage Sale, tolerable prices on some things, more than I would pay on others. No pix, so a gamble. Cleaning out the tool shed. New and used fishing baits, vintage poles, industrial electrical, lots of hand tools.

Electrical Box 7x8x3", 16ga hasp for a lock (wonder how much Schaller I can jam in there, has the clip to hold schematics on the lid. Next a pair of scissors, autoclavable, shaped like the famous "Cut a Penny" scissors, but can't. Crescent Jamestown 4" wrench AT14, black oxide finish, 17 near the hang hole, rusted stuck, will have to clean judiciously to not lose the coating. Washita Stone from Buck Knives, looks unused. AB Foot pedal switch, needs work, but catalog # 805 A4 D, rated to 600v, no idea the amps. Roll of string, tiny awl, too big for a Starrett square, Vaco 1/2" nutdriver, Husky USA 1/4" spinner #20210, and finally a Cal-Van 12V test light (love these things). needs a new tail.

Slipped out this afternoon to an Estate sale and found another via signs:

Some of the first things I grabbed:
PS & W snips, un-branded small hand drill, Channelock combo, Stanley Driver, SO and unbranded Socket that I think is an SK, Wright extension, Crescent Tool Co. pliers



Judd bar Clamp, Xacto mini and saw, Lock? brand C Clamp, Topper Plastic face hammer, (I think the first strike those tips die. I need to source replacements - but this is the biggest one of this style I've seen) and a short but heavy punch.punch,




A Mounted Geode, Wiss Pinking shears, an oversized Altoides Tin, and a needle threader. The tin was full of Buttons, those went to SWMBO.




Union 2 Drawer parts bin/storage full of junk - some will go to restock, some will go in the trash..:

The second Estate had crazy Eprey "buy it now" prices for most everything. I managed to get out for $8 - Plvmb 3/8 Ratchet, fuel can, and a small alumimum double boiler - likely for camping.




The ratchet had that rubber hose glued on - I think its Permetex - Getting that residue off won't be fun...:

Outlaw, cheap lacquer thinner works great for breaking down Permatex. Keep it wet as long as possible.

Thx Prov, I haven't used Permatex for decades, and I generally used a scraper or wire wheel back then. Not a good option here; so I'l get it setup for a soak. I have some skinny jars I've saved for such.

Lac thinner in the ultrasonic to accelerate the soaking? Would the ratchet be too heavy and tip the jar?

Don’t use flammable solvents in an ultrasonic cleaner. Maybe if the ratchet completely fit inside the jar and you fastened the lid. Still not recommended.

I'm pretty sure your "bench scraper" is a commercial kitchen griddle scraper/spatula.

But it's the copper skillet for the win! I have an old Waldrow that's one of my most used pans. Copper heats and cools fast for fine temp control--perfect for pan-fried fish.

Looks like a fairly good pick-up. How much of the contents are Wayne marked (looks like most?). Don't see the cross bar or ratchet, can't tell how much of the shallows vs flex are there when piled. But guessing 80+% complete?

I'm pretty jazzed about the copper skillet! Its tin coating on the inside looks great and should be a fun cleanup.

We started the day at our local farmer's market, their first outside day of the season, and picked up bread and sweet rolls for breakfast. Then we headed to Eau Claire (about 25 miles away) to the annual Engine club flea market. It was a bust. Maybe 20 dealers, and only 5 or 6 had anything old or rusty, the rest were crafts or baked goods. Then we headed into Eau Claire to the 3rd day of a neighborhood garage sale with maybe 100 sales scattered around an older neighborhood. I think we should have gone on the first day. I spent $1.75 on the pictured items, 25 cents each. The Popular Mechanics is January 1948, just a few months older than me. Nothing special in the tools but at least I brought home something. I'll grind the cheap 11/16 wrench to make it thinner for a special use.

I picked up a odd duck today. After climbing through the rabbit hole, a while it says it's a 1895 civil war Calvery Hoof Branding Iron. I knew it was old but not that old. Number 9 or 6 but the leg broke. Still part of history.

Well, Friday was a bust. I hit 3-4 sales, all of which turned out to be either no shows, nothing interesting, or bad directions. So, I had the feeling that the weekend was not going to be up to snuff. Boy was I wrong.

I lined up five or so sales for the day, and at the first one, which was an hour away, I spotted this:

I opened it up, saw what was generally in it, and paid the man. Here is what I saw:

And here is the good stuff pulled out of it, and you will quickly see why I paid the whole eight dollars

There were SK and Proto wrenches, some Craftsman, a cool little hammer, a half-dozen vise grips, and so on. I will sort it all out later.


The second sale was were I picked up the railroad lantern for $5, and at the fifth sale I picked up the Craftsman ratchet, Walden breaker and switch for $4. I don't need a motor starter for a shop light switch, but, what the hell.

But it was the third stop that was the show stopper. Here I picked up the wooden box (two layers!), Coleman funnel, file handle, Proto driver, Indestro ratchet, beehive driver, tack puller, eggbeater handle, stone in leather sheath, chuck key tether, Brinks and Cotton clamp, and socket chisel. Oh, I also picked this up at the sale:

Early carpenters box, complete with three tills. All of that was $30.

I almost forgot, on Wednesday, I hit my favorite thrift store and found the following

Friday my wife and I had lunch with two step-daughters in the nearby city. After lunch one step-daughter went with us to a garage sale and on the way home, an estate sale. Neither was very interesting, but I did find a few items.

Complete with instructions. It appears unused. For $0.75, I couldn't turn it down.

Today a church flea market that usually has interesting tools turned out to be a dry hole. I did get a bunch of new bearings for free!

Then I came home and scored 3 of 4 planned near the house! (#3 had just finished closing when I drove by) so a long day. then I had to take the youngest to a fabric store for Cosplay fabric and stuff. so even longer...

First off at the Flea: a Grizwold 8" CI fry pan for $5 - desperately needs stripped and re-seasoned (the inside has some rust) - I can't read any # for this, its so filthy, but the Grizwold "cross" is visible:



At least 3/4 of a gallon of camp fuel for $4 - I'm liking the Thirfty Graphics:



Toy Colt and oil can for $6 - $10 for the Old Timer -seems unused - and $1 for the cleaning kit tube:




$2 for the folding Hexamine stove and fuel, 6 tabs per tube, 5 are full - the Victronix Knife, and the Mini torch frame - I don't tink the CO2 sized fuel cartridge is available any more but I had one of these and used it for building slot cars before I got a solder gun as a kid. there are "refillable" cartridges - maybe I can rig a butane refill for this? - Or I can use it as a CO2 "Duster"?



A dollar each for the Walden Ignition set Tool roll, Dunlap combo and 6" hack saw frame -the handle is marked No. 2627? No maker.



A dollar each for the White lead, and Singer oIl can:

Then off to the Yard sales:

$2 for pellets, $1 for the upholstery belting:



$1 each for the book on Highway 17, Revere Ware mini pot, a bronze spike still in a piece of wood, and the Cat themed picture frame:



The next one was more pricey - NOS 14" chainsaw blade, Old Scout knife (may be England's BS? blade is marked ULSTER); Plvmb DOE, Sears Amp meter, I think it's a proximity drive as it has a slot for a cable, but no connections ; A stubby near identical to one from past week but a smaller blade, and 2 black pipe fittings - and an old Craftman Homeowners Vise -Model 5242 -1940-41 - Model #s changed in 42: - $15 for all:





Next one made up for it though - 100 ft light Rope, 3 wire spools; 2 steel, 1 brass, a Proto LA feeler gauge, Starrett Level, general Plumb Bob on tube, Huot No. drill index - A mate to the one Don picked up? - Next pic Pli-rench, Tire iron, and Bernz Torch head (works), and a framing square; All for $5.

First one was a small Block sale all came from one house for $3 (they announced "half off all marked prices" as I was picking) 3 way clamp, min Snippers (made in Germany), cheap ornament, and a Lassen patch:

Second local had this very nice, barely used, Feuer (fire) Hand, #275 Lantern -made in West Germany, so post war, but still vintage:



And this nicely cased and scoped .177 cal spring rifle:



With the 2 tins of pellets and this loader (I didn't know these existed - cool accessory!):



He wanted $50 for the gun and I got him to throw in the $2 lantern.


After passing #3 and landing at #4 and these cotton gloves for a buck, and then the mini refer for 3 more!:




The Mini refer will take power from 12V or 102V AC:

Has anyone noticed the 2 back to back finds? Who will get #3?

Couple vintage mini hacksaws, 1 Snap On, 1 needs ID

I've had these mini hacksaws for a long time, 1 is a Snap On, other needs an ID. It just say "No 2627" on the handle, nothing else. I got it in a used tool box purchase about 40 years ago, and iy was old then. Any idea on a maker? Also, are blades available for the Snap On? Thanks.

Pretty happy with today's finds too - I went south to the HS Flea, and hit a few planned YS's but a bunch of TOO's too, and those really made the day.

Then I came home and scored 3 of 4 planned near the house! (#3 had just finished closing when I drove by) so a long day. then I had to take the youngest to a fabric store for Cosplay fabric and stuff. so even longer...

Nope, Didn't see one, or if I did it didn't have any pull indicators for me.

Bu one (of several ) estate sales in SJ I want to try to remember where it was, as I left something behind I wanted, and I want to see if the cap for the plumb bob tube is there... I think it was a TOO though and if so....

I was home waiting for UPS, with 2 strikes against me, as they delivered an "adult signature required" package much faster than expected. If I'd missed that, it would have been returned to sender, so I didn't even get out.

Down here Thrifty was a drug store before Rite Aid (or someone) bought them out; Rite Aid is about all we have left here, so ultimately that's where they landed.

who is the maker (or branding) on that .177?

Th PO carefully painted over the markings... Pretty sure is a Daisy/Winchester 1100 the scope is a Winchester Air rifles 3X9, and it seems to mostly match.

Un-named die holder. Quite old as the set screws are 3BA.
