Beemer and WNYFlyer ****! I need that little Mac hex set😂

Hit a couple estate sales by the same company. The first one advertised a full shop so I went to that one first. Got there within an hour of opening or so and was surprised at how few hand tools there were. Tried to buy something but they wanted like 3 bucks a socket so I bailed. Heard one of the employees talking about the other sale and he said it was “priced the same way” so I wasn’t optimistic. But it was on my way so I went by.

There were few people at the next sale and no tool guys. I ended up getting to pick through a nice Huot roller with a rally box on top. Dumped a bunch of stuff in my bag and figured I’d better get a price before I spent any more time picking. Was very pleasantly surprised when she just looked in the bag and said “how bout $20?”. That’ll work!

There’s a bunch of Proto in this and some Craftsman and other randoms but the Cornwell DOE angle wrenches were the best of this bunch. If anyone has the 5/8 AW 2020 or 13/16 AW 2626 version of these please let me know! Happy to buy or trade for them.

IMG_7035.jpeg

Dumped the previous stuff in the car and had to go back for more. Grabbed this NOS Craftsman punch set and could not leave the Crowntop bit set behind. They still have their hats!😂. If anyone wants the bit set for the cost of shipping let me know. It’s not my thing but I figured one of you degenerates might want it!

IMG_7034.jpeg

Was about to go out the door and noticed this little box tucked away with a $20 price tag on it. Popped it open and the first thing I saw was an SK 18mm combo which I’ve been trying to find for months to complete a set. They want stupid money for them on eBay so I figured everything else in the box would just be a bonus😂

IMG_7033.jpeg

Turns out there was quite a bit of stuff in it. Most of Craftsman combo sets and 1/2, 3/8, and 1/4 socket sets. Then a few other bits and bobs including more Proto and my precious SK 18mm😂

IMG_7032.jpeg

Got to talking with the gal running the sale and she mentioned that they had auctioned the whole shop at the other sale I had just come from…would have been nice if they mentioned that! Oh well though just goes to show that you never can tell which sale booms and which sale busts! Ok I’ll quit rambling now😂

Probably takes a little longer when that lake-effect snow kicks in...

Lake effect 2022.jpg
Hey now, we don't need to be thinking about that yet ! Luckily I live North of the traditional snow belt but on occasion mother nature has other ideas. That said I had snow tires delivered the other day so I will be ready........... I think...........

Can you guess what I missed out on this morning by mere seconds? I’ll give you a clue. It’s in the lower left of the Craigslist photo.

I was third in line, but the guy in the front was a little quicker to the shed. I don’t feel too bad though after my 4 dollar find last month.

I did get a less exciting consolation prize. Photos when I get home tonight.

I know. It was a baby in better shape than the one I picked up earlier. I bet it was cheap too. The rough part is I could have beat the guy there but he was a senior and I didn’t want to race past him. He was excited though.
Besides, what would I do with two baby bullets.?
One post wonder them under an alias whilst simultaneously listing them on eBay, and then laugh all the way to the bank?

Oops. I mean clean the up, and show them to your old GJ buddies!

Went to a local estate sale this weekend that advertised having tools. I waited a week and finally when the day came I woke up early and hit the road despite the nasty weather which I think scared off many people and they also opened the first day on a Friday. When I arrived I stopped at the garage and made a nice pile of tools. I picked a few small bags of tools already marked on a table and a couple socket trays and bits on a pegboard wall. There way a huge tote of tools and every tool was $1 each. I immediately see the Craftsman duckbill pliers and I'm thinking this is all going to be good stuff so I ask how much on the entire tote. I get it for $40 which was a steal. It did take me more than a couple hours to sort through it all since it was all haphazardly placed. A ton of neat stuff to be found. The man who passed away was a technician for Bell which explains all of the neat Bell Systems branded stamped tools. There was all sorts of phones, telephone equipment, test gear, electronics, etc. He didn't throw things away and would take things back home that were being scrapped at work. I had zero competition for tools and even picked up a bunch more on the second day. I even left a bunch of Craftsman and other great tools behind since I had so much and was pretty overwhelmed with all of this. There was a whole house and basement full of stuff. The handful of people there all went to our own separate ways. I seen other buy some vintage toys, Geiger counters, books, an airplane propeller, etc. There was even a room with all sorts of vintage cameras but definitely don't need another expensive hobby. All in I have less than $300 into everything counting gas and breakfast. I didn't feel the need to haggle on the price at all. Pretty much all the cash I had on hand and I know how hard I worked to get that money in particular so I'm glad I got to stretch that money on things I can use and just things for my collection. This is my second big tool estate sale this year. Maybe I'll post the other one here as well.

Sorry I'm just now catching up on this thread but I'm curious about the handle on ball pein on the far right. I recently picked up a brass ball pein with the same handle. Do you know anything about it? We're the holes for grip?

Were the holes for grip?
Yes. More commonly seen on tire tools, but I've seen them on other class hammers as well.
Mimicking, kinda sorta, if maybe inversely, the same effective pattern Forged Steel Products would make famous branded as Vacuum-Grip and used on pliers. Or, even more interestingly, just as likely, FSP borrowed the idea from what they had seen men doing to hammer handles for a long time.

The other common pattern I see on old hammers is the grooving in parallel lines around the handle, either like rings or more serpentine.

Quickie flea trip [Lugz 2024_51] yielded...

/ An H.D. Smith pipe wrench (2nd of the year) with an unusual marking, smacking of some retaliation, that I don't recall seeing before
/ W&B "S" wrench
/ Tobrin copy-cat perfect-handle type screwdriver (hailing from the same general vicinity as H.D. Smith, btw) with the barberpole logo
/ Postwar Petersen's but too cute (5") to pass up
/ TBD (no markings) bicycle wrench of serious forged quality

2024_51.jpg

Cleaned-up closeups and additional postings and info will be delayed by at least a week as I will be wheels-up for Venice Beach, Cali in [...checks watch...] less than 3 hours. Our daughter just delivered us another grandboy (he's a III, and they're going to call him "Trey").

This is unusual for me, but all of those tools came out of the same load, spread out on a table by an older woman and her even older mother, who came down from NY.

20241026_045223.jpg

Usually I am picking one here, one there, etc. But it was a good load.

When I noticed they spoke with Eastern European accents, I said, Dobry den, guessing they would understand no matter what country they were from originally. When they returned a greeting in kind, smiling, I asked them if they spoke Slovak (Govorite po slovensky?) to which they replied in Russian (Po rusky) with more smiles. So, I switched to Russian. We had a nice chat and, I got a better deal than the guy before me, who was a bit of an ***. :)

No real LEAVE-BEHINDs to speak of, but I did experience that classic and well-known Garage Sale Thread pseudo-phenomenal magic known as, "If You Talk About It Enough, It Will Appear..." Long-time threadsters will know what I'm talking about. Just like that other Garage Sale thread voodoo known as "Everything Comes in Threes," it's almost certainly a case of coincidence, a uniquely human neural reckoning, and we have probably been walking past the items in question for months without noticing.

But in the spirit of that traditional thread sensation...

Whether you are part of the percentage of people who consider this a Murder of Crowbars or part of the percentage of people who would consider it a Gaggle of Geeseneck Wrecking Bars, I submit my testament to the eerie feeling of now noticing them just about everywhere I turn! :)

When we do our tri annual flea visits, we always notice a theme, one unique item that several vendors have “this trip”. A six foot bird cage: or one of those vise anvil combos, that you’ve never seen there before. But that murder of crowbars is taking an internal poll, “ who has seen the movie “The Birds”, so beware. Safe travels to Ca. Too far to drop in and say hey.

Drove a little too far based on the listing photos showing synthetic quarts of oil at $1.00,and some ratchets with $2. and $3. price tags.
Got there 15 minutes early, all the lights in the home were off....
4 other cars were now lined up.
At precisely 7am, the garage door opened, I was first up the driveway, and grabbed all the stuff on my shopping list & tossed it in my canvas bag.
Kept looking & found some more stuff.
By 7:15 there were 15 men crowded into a very small garage.
I checked the ratchets that were in my bag, & put one back as it was a locked up craftsman.
Ready to check out, the seller lost his money box & was unable to make change till he found it.
A 10 minute wait while his wife got the flashlight & pored through piles of boxes to find it.
Sigh,
Anyway I guess it was worth it.
Got this pile for 31 bucks.
Mostly import stuff, Duralast & Kobalt, but there is a Williams S52 in there, new C-man 1/4 rat & screwdrivers
and the 6 quarts of synthetic.

Can anyone shed some light on this odd (to me anyway) Wisepro cutters/pliers.
Flat on one side for flush cuts, with a hole drilled in the center of the blades, perhaps for romex stripping?

Couple pickups from today…

Plomb 1/4 box off OfferUp, Craftsman plastic cases from an estate sale, I’m looking forward to filling in the socket set! $21

IMG_7044.jpeg

Also grabbed this beast for $25. I need it like a hole in the head but hoping it’s somewhat rare. Weighs a ton! That’s why it’s still in my rig😂

5197 for $25? USUCK!

Slim pickings here, and a lot of it is very eclectic! Short on tools, and camp gear.

Two bucks for this box - I'm planning for it to be used for camping - as found:

Y1-Gilbert-1.jpg

Gilbert - I'm immediatly thinking chemestry set:

Y1-Gilbert-2.jpg

Nope! Woodworking! I never heard of Gilbert delving into toy tools? And on preliminary search, probably 40's as in the 50's it was a metal box. thsi one is wood, and finger jointed. hinges and hasps will need some attention

Y1-Gilbert-3.jpg

Same place, carved wood pineapple for a buck, needs cleaned - One of my daughters friends in into Pineapples;

Y1-Pineaplle-carving.jpg

$5 for mostly "supplies", but Hey I broke into tools!: SOS pads full box,Brass Chain, Drafting pencil & Pointer, Pentel lead, Proto PH #0, Swag Hooks Binder Clips - these last I use a lot camping for closing tarp edges, hanging garbage bags, etc. - Tp: clip them to a piece of cardboard dn paint them orange or other high contrast color!;

Y2-SOS-Br-Chain-Draftng-pencil-Proto-Hooks-Clips.jpg

$3 for the Pasco Saw -Teeth look new/sharp;

Y3-Pasco-Saw-1.jpg

Y3-Pasco-Saw-2.jpg

$7 spin drum, Hatchet head and sheath - on the drum, see that bead on a cord? - there are two of them - you hold it in the middle and rock your wrist and those beat on the drum heads. No name on the hatchet head;

Y4-Spin-drum-hatchet-head.jpg

$7 for Skull man, and a glass angel Skull man for Halloween, and the angel reminded me of Characters in a vid game the ladies of the house like.

I made a pilgramage down to one of the local Junque Shoppes today. Mostly just an excuse to get out for a drive, but I did bring a few things home:

54096018060_6d3fb1c5fa_b.jpg

Box 'O Sockets, 1/4" dr, $10--stuff at the top is older Craftsman, some SK, Proto, Challenger by Proto (extension), etc. A couple of head scratchers and Taiwan, too. Ten acid (flux) brushes, $2--I go through a lot of those. Plumb BP head, $5. The handle is from a few weeks back--I was hoping it would fit the Plumb head. Piece of RR rail, $13. Should make for a good benchtop anvil.

54096018040_3354470ebb_b.jpg

The soft metal plug in the rail. I think it's a zinc alloy and I'm guessing it was for electrical bonding of the rail sections. Google ain't telling me shite about it.

Hammer head:

54096039520_d8d11e8ddf_b.jpg

It weighs 13 3/8 oz. Of all the BP hammers I have, this is the second one with a brand!

A couple of left-behinds (actually, thousands of left-behinds):

For you RR and militaria nuts:

54095835793_f1a0357a49_b.jpg

54095835803_c466532c33_b.jpg

I couldn't get the whole thing in one pic with the room I had to work with.

54096039855_2a63a92970_b.jpg

54095914709_1d9fafe29f_b.jpg

I've been leaving that one behind for a couple of decades now and, at $250, will be for the foreseeable future.

54096039840_5fb23a20f4_b.jpg

Get out there and split some wood, boy--what kinda' whimpy sissy needs a smooth, round handle on a hatchet? Yes, that's a Bell System hammer to the left of it. $55 if anyone's interested.

This place is also known as the Rusty Tool Museum, because at the prices they ask for most things, people just come in, look around and leave.
