Played around with a fuel leak. Took the hose off I thought was where the leak originated from, (between inline filter and fuel pump), but couldn’t find anything wrong with it. Went to NAPA and got new filters (inline and spin-on), and new hose. Inline filter was wrong, so I reused the old one.
Tidied up the line and sleeved some parts of it to keep it from rubbing on things. Purple Powered and hosed everything off so I can see if the leak comes back.

Removed the starter from the Mustang as it is giving me problems. Now when I try to start the engine the starter just makes noise & the engine will not crank. :( The starter is not grinding; it seems like it just spins & is not engaging the flywheel. The engine I have is a 1987 5.0, the T-5 5spd trans is from a 1987 Mustang, the spacer plate between the engine & the trans is one that fits for the T-5 trans & the starter is for a 1987 Mustang. I have read where people who have swapped an auto for the T-5 5 spd have used their original starter from the auto & have had no problems, unfortunately the original starter is long gone. I am going to try to get one for a 1969 302 automatic & see if it works. I do not know what else to do.
What kind of noise, just a click or a click and clank like the drive is hitting the flywheel and not going far enough in to start spinning the starter motor?
Does the 69 have the same 2 bolt flange?

Only question left, what does the TerraLux LED look like? Is it just the bulb? Or the whole reflector assembly?

The one I have looks like this.

IMG_6208.jpeg

It is threaded on to the switch assembly, replacing the original bulb and retaining collar. Uses the OEM reflector.

The one I’m looking at on Amazon looks like it similarly threads on to the switch. Other cheaper ones look like just straight bulb replacements, using the OEM retaining collar.

Nice. Maybe I would find more uses for these batteries, knowing I can charge them without having to make a pack. I mean a guy only has so many mag lites.lol

I have a couple of the HF work lights, and now three Mags using 18650s. This charger also does the NiMH AA and AAA batteries I’m using in pretty much everything else.

Put the potted banana plant in the basement garage, pulled weeds and trimmed vines around where it was setting in the back yard. Then labeled speaker wires and put terminals on the last two that I pulled. Then installed the last two speakers that came in earlier this week. Connected all the wires and sounds great.

After years of procrastination and doubt about something going wrong, I changed the crank seal on my 2011 Impala. My sixties and seventies cars I changed without a thought, but the never cars are more delicate. I could pull the balancer off my 62, 66 Impala and 79 and 80 Monte Carlo's and hammer the balancer be back on without a thought. The newer cars have the torque to yield bolts so you cant use the old one. Then you have to torque and degree the bolt. Some say use a little silicone around the outside seal, some say don't on the newer cars. The original factory bearing didn’t have the spring on the back. The one I got from the dealer had a spring on the back. The new seal is hard rubber with small balls of red lubricant around the inside. The old bearing would only leak in cold weather, but then started leaking in the warm weather also. It started about the size of a golf ball, then it started getting bigger. I have a lot of balancer pullers, but the balancer on the car was shaped weird not letting jaws clamp on properly. I bought a new puller with the rods that go into the crank thread hole. The balancer came off with no issues. I bought a balancer installer with the pressure bearing and large nut. I had no wrenches that would fit the nut. Luckily I have an old Williams adjustable wrench that fit. I wasn’t able to get but very small turns due to obstructions. I was able to use the old crank bolt and screw it down. The bearing went in a little cocked at first but was able to straighten it and tap it in flush. Other than that everything went pretty smooth.

It sounds like the starter drive is just spinning. I pulled the starter out & I am going to bench test it to see if the starter drive is engaging. The starter has the 2 bolt flange. Here is a link to a pic of the starter.

IIRC in normal operation that kind of starter can't spin unless the bendix has been moved forward. Is it possible you have a bad bendix? Missing pivot pin? Fork not properly engaged in bendix?

Yes, that is true, if the bendix isn't moved out it isn't going to turn. You can remove that top cover and see all of that, even pushing down the arm to verify the parts are working as they should. IIRC, there were basically just 2 starters for most of the Fords, a version for auto trans that has a longer nose, deeper into the bell housing and a shorted version that was shallower, the diameter of the hole the nose enters was a bit larger on the manual trans version.

I remember having a bit of an issue replacing the starter on an old wood chipper I acquired it has a Ford 300 6 cylinder motor and a clutch to engage the chipper assembly. I went and purchased a starter for a manual trans only to find this chipper used the auto trans version.

Finally feeling a little less-sick, so I got out to the garage. Jacked the wife's VW up to soak the strut bolts with PB (in preparation for removal on a day when I feel even less-sick than I do today, lol).

Good thing I opted to order springs too. The passenger side spring is visibly broken. That thing sits so low you can't see the spring with the wheel on. I bet the driver side is broken too, I just didn't bother to look. The passenger side was totally obvious. It was all cocked-sideways and dangling, lol.

Oil change on the kids car. Before I did that though I did some work on the ramps. I had rounded the front edge off more with a belt sander and when I used them the next time they were sliding. I took a trim router and knocked the front part down to three quarters and added a bevel to that to the step up. The Taurus rode up smoothly on that without sliding the ramps.
The youngest (17) 'helped' me change the oil. Well - I did most of that but he got schooled on it. I decided that I needed to check the rear brakes since it's at 95K so I took the opportunity to teach him how to change a flat tire. Made him use only what was with the car and made him do all of it himself with some guidance. He did fairly well. Theoretically all three know how to change a tire now - if I get a call I can say 'So change it already!'. Yeah - we'll see how that works out.
Checked the air in the space saver spare while it was out and it was completely empty so we aired it up.

Like many other people with a 2018/2019 Dodge with the 8.4 head unit, I had screen delamination. It started about 2 years ago, but didn't really do anything except see where it was delaminating when it was off, but recently it started ghost touching to call people and changing radio stations every few seconds. I looked at a bunch of different things on fixing it a couple of years ago and decided I was going to try the cheap route. Pulled the radio, used 15lb fishing line to separate the digitizer from the rest of the screen and then a combination of goof off, 90% Isopropyl alcohol, cotton balls, paper towels and microfibers to get all of the old adhesive off. I then used a good microfiber and good glass cleaner to remove the haze and make it all clear again. I bought a roll of 2 sided Gorilla tape for $6 and put it on around the black outer edge to give the screen the gap again. I didn't peel the backing off of the other side of the tape since the black bezel held it together and I didn't want to clean more adhesive if it didn't work. I got it in, it lit up and looked great, but the touch screen wasn't responsive. I tore it back apart, checked it all out, reseated the ribbon cable and put it back together again, still same. We had a birthday party to go to so I left it in the truck and could control what i needed to get music or phone calls through the steering wheel controls. On the way home from the party the screen and everything worked like it should and not more ghosting! Less than $10 fix.

Spent most of the day cleaning up the garden - maybe we’ll get cold weather eventually, but this is the latest in the season that I can remember harvesting tomatoes. Forecast doesn’t predict a freeze for another week. Plenty of time to drain the hose reels, but damn - I hate it when it gets so dark, so early.

In the garage, I filled up the tires on the Volvo, ran a few loads through the ultrasonic and picked up a bit. Still a bit warm to switch over to winter rubber, but that day is coming soon.

Re-greased mom's KitchenAid stand mixer, and put a few drops of oil on the motor shaft/bearing. Sounds like new now.

Cleaned and sharpened the chainsaws after taking down a few trees for my dad earlier in the week.

Cleaned and put away a bunch of hand tools. It's been a busy week and I haven't had time to clean up everything each night like I would typically like to.

I haven't been able to kick-start my 74 XLCH Sportster for almost a year due to a right knee injury. Earlier today I drained 2 gallons of old high test fuel from its gas tank after which I drained and removed the S&S 'E' Carb. Tomorrow I'm heading out on the '74 FLH ElectraGlide for a long ride so I won't get back working on the Sportster until probably Monday. Thorough cleaning of the gas tank and carb are in order.1731814920948.jpeg 1731813871202.jpeg

I vaguely remember a guy who used to start his bike from the other side using his left leg. It was like a freak show.lol Don’t remember why, maybe a bad knee.

I've used my left leg to kick start the Sportster while standing on the same right side of the bike before. However, I didn't want to risk my 69 year old 'a little better shape' knee while my right knee was healing. I'd rather limp a bit then need a walker or wheelchair to get around. If you've ever owned an early XLCH Sportster, then you've experienced a slipping kicker....OUCH!
