The estate sale where I purchase the Delta grinder last week had a last minute posting this morning so I ran over to check it out. I was hoping the old Cman drill press would still be there but it was gone. There was still an old Delta Rockwell planer and a TON of old Porter Cable USA made power tools in excellent condition still in their metal cases. I don't have a need or know enough about them to even think about buying them. Also a ton of woodworking hardware.
Oh well....I found a few goodies that I could have lived without but also couldn't leave behind because I know it all likely end up in the trash.

Ten bux got me all of this:

Possible old military wrench roll marked "BG-30", ball peen hammer (possibly Maynox?), Wiss tin snips, Stanley chisels, Sears tire patch tins, Red Diamond adjustable, Pella clock that works and was made in USA, and what appears to me to be a very old Master Lock unfortunately without the key. @jeffmoss26 maybe you have some insight.

Estate sale ($42). Pioneer SX-680 (not working); Disston (1896-1917) rip saw; Plumb 5/8" wrench 1220.

Picked up the stereo for $40 this morning and flipped it on the bay for $185 within an hour. Somebody must have been looking. Added another saw to the collection. I swear I'm going to get them all into the electrolysis bath this weekend.

You may not want to do that. Back in the day (2000s) when the internet was new, and shared information very new, electrolysis was the only tool available to really derust things, there was talk of “hydrogen embrittlement” and people using electrolysis and then the saw snapping teeth off when sharpening.

Someone found an article, shared it, and it became gospel. I have no idea if true, I've decided not to risk it. I derust all mine with wet dry sandpaper and a hard wooden block, to preserve any etching which may exist

I agree with RTM. I generally start with a new razor blade at a low angle on the dry saw to get the initial rust and crud off and expose any etch.
Thanks for the tip! What do you recommend, using the blade like a knife or like a scraper?

I made my occasional pilgrimage down-valley to a couple of honey holes--no yard sales around here for another seven or eight months:

$60 got me out the door with an NOS gun cleaning kit (for the brushes), Duro Chrome 2141 hose clamp pliers (I need these!), Stanley adjustable-throat block plane (cheap--why not?), PT 21mm X 1/2" deep impact socket (Toyota lug nuts) and a Mystery Vise (too cool to leave behind). Had a nice drive on the last day of November--bare roads, no traffic.

On Friday, I was able to sneak out and hit three sales, all the while avoiding the Black Friday madness for the most part.
54174187163_2d585aa269_b.jpg
First was a tool (and jewelry and china, but whatevs) sale were I found the geometric C push driver in box (with bits and instructions!), an Armstrong 1" combo, and the Goodell Pratt 1 push drill. Second stop had nothing of interest, but the third stop was the surprise. I didn't have much hope for it, as no pictures. But it was on my way home, so I figured what the heck. And here I found the Snap-on Vacuum Grip needle nose, Klein Kurves (my favorite wire strippers) and, best of all, an Armstrong ignition set, only missing the pliers, which I am sure I have a pair of.

And today will be spent putting up the Xmas lights.
Those Klein curves are my favorite as well!

My wife wanted to go to sales today for her birthday! Who was I to argue? We hit a big warehouse/ storage unit buy out sale where I scored the plomb and the Proto whitworth for $15. Scored the Blackhawk dbe for $4 at an antique store. Finally filled some holes on my Proto metric/ whitworth tool panelIMG_1885.jpeg

you guys are killing it for a Holiday W/E!

I had a really good day, until I came home and discovered I'd misplaced my pocket magnifier... I've become very attached to that thing ever since I picked it up as a bare tortoise shell framed magnifier, and made a leather cover for it. It's been my "second pair of eyes" for almost 12 years... I even went back to my last stop to see if I'd set it down or dropped it there... I thought I remembered using it there, I don't recall using it at the other stops.

EDC-Magnifier.jpg

I'll have to see if I can find something similar I guess.

UPDATE! OMG! I took the little C-clamp (See Below) out to my wire wheel and what do I find? My magnifier! icon_eek.gif

I'm SO happy cf_woohoo.gif cf_wino.gif but confused too icon_rolleyes.gif icon_e_confused.gif . I could swear I used it this AM, and not out there! but super glad I found it! I was already looking for a replacement!

Back on topic:

The picking was good, so slight compensation for losing the magnifier, but I still felt sick about it.

3 stops no TOO's all three produced, but the big win was stop one:

What attracted me was 2 pics and a mention of Unistrut. but the Unistrut was the little thin stuff, so a fail there, the pic was a box I thought might be wartime, and possibly Plvmb:

Box-1.jpg

Box-2.jpg

I'm thinking 27-30 " wide... it was 4-5 FEET wide and a job box! I wasn't even close! It was left behind.

What I DID find made the longer trip well worth it!

The Coleman #1 funnel was my first grab and needed a rag for the oil on it.. The Eagle Oiler was NOT oily - Go figure! Small butterfly clamp, Poper Iron & Wire Works file handle, and a Mini Melting pot - he had a stack of pots, but I wanted this one for some small casting I'm planning on.

PS-1-Ealgle-CM-Poper-Clamp-pot.jpg

The big score - 4 Wilton Power arm Juniors! I have one Wilton baby bullet, so one is planned for.

PS-2-Wilton-Power-arm-Jr.jpg

He had 2 Kero lanterns, but this one called me, the other looked like a project with missing parts - it is a Little Defiance No. 1 - The far side has "Stolen from the Streets Department - City of Oakland" embossed. Red globe - it should clean up decent. I like the globe guards!

PS-3-Little-Defiance-No-1-Oakland.jpg

A fire pot, maker to be determined:

PS-4-Fire-pot.jpg

Maybe this one I can get going!

A couple of Burlap bags - I think they are from Ethiopia? - Someone on another Forum googled these and verified - Coffee Bags from Ethiopia, USA was the (obvious) destination.

PS-5-Burlap-bags.jpg

6 NOS Half round files!:

PS-6-Files-1.jpg

PS-6-Files-2.jpg

PS-6-Files-3.jpg

And a NOS Williams 4" clamp:

PS-7-Williams-1.jpg

PS-7-Williams-2.jpg

$40 all!

At a YS I found a SF Giants stadium snow(fog -kind of cool)-globe (not pictured) and this brass candlestick for $3:

Y1-Brass-candle-stick.jpg

And my last stop - first pics was free, - first trip - second was a buck when I went to look for my magnifier.

Plvmb #3 Phillips, Brass "key", Brass and plated washers for countersunk screws, and a file card stamped PAT OCT 7, 90, and marked (I'm reading shadows here) COLTON'S PAT. FILE [something] - Back Frame and Face - Mardwell [Something, something, San Francisco, CA? ]...:

Y2-Plvmb-Brass-key-CS-washers-File-card.jpg

And 2-1/2" "Adjustable" C-Clamp, A Gimlet, an Ice pick, and a Trimble & Fink, Baltimore MD. Patented driver - its supposed to have a way to spread the driver tips to hold a screw, but Its locked up ATM.

WOW, some good post-holiday finds out there! Sux to Outlaw, Smokeshow, Ctuai, and pretty much everyone else!

Outlaw- I think that fire pot is a Klein, Beerhippie- that vise looks Polish, so good quality, Ctuai - I met a fellow over T-day who made his money by flipping old stereo gear like that. We talked a lot about the diferences in the used tool and book world (what I look for and flip) vs. equipment like that. Nice conversation. Smokeshow- I am always on the lookout for those Proto Whitworth, so good score!

There weren‘t any sales of interest yesterday but there was a garage sale listed around the corner this morning. We walked there and two neighbors were participating. We found some oilers at the first sale. IMG_7657.jpeg
I overpaid slightly but there were no transportation costs involved. I left behind a Keen Kutter hatchet head that was priced at $40.00. We walked next door and spotted this flexible head plane. I hadn’t run across one before so that came home as well. IMG_7658.jpeg
We proceeded on our walk and found a free pile up the street. I couldn’t pass up the Berkeley Farms milk crate. I‘m sure I can find some tools to display in it.IMG_7659.jpeg

Nice finds! I like both the RPM and MMO cans! I use one like the MMO as a regular use can at my inside bench. I'm planning on refilling with a syringe, as I have a gallon can of the stuff.

@d42jeep Don, your flexible head plane is a box scraper, made to remove old labels from wooden shipping crates, in preparation for a new label. It might be a Stanley No 70.

WisJim nailed it for it's purpose. From back when wood crates and not cardboard were used.

The scraper is marked Stanley as Jim said. IMG_7672.jpegIMG_7673.jpeg

We (Me and 4 friends) went to the Alameda NAS antique flea market, to do our annual pre Christmas visit. Things were a bit smaller than normal, being the thanksgiving weekend, so it was narrower, and shorter than usual, for those who have been. Buddies found a few things early, I handed a few finds to them. We finally found a guy that had participated in a hardware store NOS cleanout, and I grabbed some stuff I had never seen before. Also grabbed some auger twist drill bits with the longer point, a spokeshave lever cap, and some big points for a snap ring pliers (they missed the class picture) Buddy also brought along 60 2'x 2' maple laminate tops, probably from old bedside table somewhere.

Our combined haul is here (one buddy into hi fi, another into archery.
PXL_20241201_185503109-X2.jpg

Here is the stuff from my haul. From the NOS haul, a 11 boxes of Yankee socket drivers. a locked up chapman ratchet, 3 x drill bits, spokeshave lever cap, and a Penncraft ignition wrench set, most look unused, and a #61 Stanley block plane. Of to the right twelve 2' x 2' maple laminate pieces, and a Fiestaware soup bowl. Two Watermann fountain pens hiding in the shadows.

1000012173-X2.jpg

The details of the Yankee stuff will show up elsewhere with details, the Penncraft in the Penney's thread? Some Yankee will be put up FS.
