Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT Basement Bike Cave and 3D Printing Workspace

Long time listener, first time caller in this sub-forum of GJ.
Coming to you live from Eastern Iowa (Cedar Rapids).
We moved into a new (2 year old) house October 2023 and there was 1 larger unfinished storage room in the basement with good space and high ceilings. There's also an unfinished HVAC/Water Heater utility room on the opposite wall I'm also working on finishing up for some extra storage, etc.

Anyway, here's the progress so far.

-Installed 3 more lights
-Installed outlets as there was a grand total of 1 in there before.
-Mapped out home network/future server rack
-Mapped out Bike Steady Rack placement, wire management, etc
-Installed Rockwool Safe N Sound insulation on the main wall shared with the basement TV area/HVAC/Water heater room.
-54"x12 Drywall Ordered/Hung/Taped/Almost finished


Future things to do:
-Figure out a ceiling situation. Perhaps paint black, maybe higher drop ceiling with a little soffit for the HVAC/Pex access, not a priority.
-Figure out the flooring situation. Maybe polished concrete, vinyl plank to match the rest of the upstairs, rubber mat for future gym, there are many options.

Overall, it's a great start for some bicycle tinkering, workout space, and 3D printing workspace.

DIY diddy

Feedback work stand clamp (used) and a exterior antenna mount from amazon looks to be a nice compact option and under $75.

Convenience of the feedback clamp is great without having the huge tripod that goes with it. This one stays close to the wall when folded away not in use.

Thanks! It's a forever bike for sure. Rigid, Singlespeed isn't for everyone, but it is for me!

Latest update was swapping to a DUB BB to match the other bikes in the house which meant swapping to a SRAM Eagle XX1 Crankset and Wolf Tooth chainring from the previous Raceface setup. I'm an anti logo guy, so Crankskins Matte crank arm protectors are on all of my bikes, this one included.

I choose to save the couple hundred bucks and went P1S over the X1C. You give up the LiDar which has mixed reviews, get a slightly lower resolution camera, hardened extruder gears(15 buck swap down the road) and 10C lower bed temp. None of which is that big of a deal(or a deal at all) to most users. If you're going to print some exotic engineering grade Nylon or other high temp filaments...the X1C might help...but otherwise...my vote would be for the P1S and spend the saved cash on filament or a filament dryer....or another AMS unit!

It seems like singlespeed is a trend that has really faded over the last 20 years. I used to see singlespeeds and rigids fairly often and now it's a rare sighting. I'm with you, as long as the trail isn't too insane, I like to ride rigid SS.

Little bike stable update on the Crux.

I found a smoking deal on some SRAM Red AXS Shifters/Calipers/Rear Der. Should be able to sell the Force AXS stuff I had on it and pay almost nothing. Feels good to have both main bikes with the exact same components.

2018 56cm S-Works Crux with 38mm Tubeless tires, power meter, pedals, 2 cages, Garmin and rear light mount coming in at 16.2lbs

Update on the road bike.
The Tarmac SL7 is now sporting some wider tires. I went with Conti GP5000S TR's in 700x28mm variety and am enjoying the extra volume on some rougher pavement.
Also, I swapped cockpits from a 42x110 to the narrower/longer version that has 38cm wide bars and 115mm stem. Really liking it!

Yes, it's light and fast at 15.8lbs with pedals, cage, garmin and light mounts.

I swapped to 32 on the road bike and I am running a 35 of the tandem road wheels. It's amazing how comfortable they are, and they still seem fast. I have not gone down the narrow bar path, I know the pros keep going narrower for full aero. Then again, I just get keep getting slower, no matter what the new tech. Age will do that...

No pictures on this post, but hopefully it helps others who are in the SRAM Electronic Shifting world.

I've created a compatibility matrix for all eTap/AXS parts as the electronic shifting offering has expanded and backwards/cross compatibility hasn't been officially documented anywhere by SRAM.

11 speed, 12 speed, 13 speed, Road/XPLR/Eagle info that I will keep up to date when new groupsets/parts are added by SRAM in the future.

I wanted to give a buddy of mine 2 polished cages to finish off his Merckx build, found a good deal for 3 on eBay and wrote up a pretty basic post here to show the progress and whats possible since I didn't see anything else online.

The polished versions should match the vintage Merckx, Cinelli stem and other polished campy components well, while almost being period correct.

Supplies I used:
-Red Scotch Brite Pads
-Dremel
-100 Piece Cheap Polishing Kit from Amazon
-A few Rags
-Polishing Compound, I used some old Mothers Aluminum Mag Wheel polish and some other affordable blue stuff from Amazon

Total Time: ~20-25 mins per cage

Thread update, I've been buying and selling SRAM AXS groups for 2 years now. This week was a big week - SOLD 3 Force AXS XPLR groups!
D2 and D1 as well still. The XPLR RD's are getting harder and harder to find.
Next up, building a new set of road wheels (Enve 4.5 SES & DT180 Centerlock hubs)

Spring means bike washes, topping up the sealant, and fresh lube.
The 2018 Crux is now rocking XTR 9100 Pedals now and is weighting in at 16.75 lbs as pictured.





Moots MootoX now weighting in at 18.4 lbs as pictured after a clean. I swapped pedals to XTR 9100s to match the Crux.


Finally, the road bike got some love with a new set of wheels.
Enve SES 4.5s with DT180 hubs. Man, they are nice. Wide as hell too!
I updated the cockpit decal to a white version. The online seller included 2 decals and I was able to not mess up the first one so this is how it sits.





On the 3D Printing front, I ordered a new (used) Bambu Lab X1 Carbon Combo and started laying out the workbench where it will live. I'll be making a custom '**********' to take the discarded filament and passing it around the side and down into the trash can.



Now I have everything tucked in and ready for the printer to arrive.

How do you like that sealant? I have never used it. I'm currently running the Silca, but I am quickly tiring of all the tubeless hassle.

It's the only sealant I'll use. Cheaper and lasts longer than Orange Seal or Stan's. I use it on Road, Gravel, and MTB wheels without any issues.


When its gone I might try to new stuff from Silca as its supposed to last 6 months while this is good for ~4 with regular use.

What's your plan with the ceiling in the room? Just going to leave it like it is, or plans to paint it or anything?

I've used the truckerco before and didn't have issues but honestly didn't think it was much different than stans. They seemed very similar to me. I honestly haven't had issues with Stans or orange seal or wtb though.

Ceiling will either be a drop ceiling or drywall with a little soffit and access as needed for plumbing and my electrical junction box.

Wife and I have litespeed road bikes. At our ages now, 75 and 70, we finally got some help...specialized turbo creo for me and specialized turbo vado for her. Great bikes!!! Your bike den looks great!!

Now for something not 3D printed or cycling related!

I scored this Coleman Cooler off FB Marketplace today for $20. Couldn't pass it up as it was less than a mile away and just the patina I was looking for.
Date on the bottom says 6/99 MUSA Wichita KS.

A little magic eraser on the white parts, white vinegar on the rust, and some light soap/water to clean up the outside and its ready for summer.

I fired up the new (used, but new to me) 3D printer today with goal of doing 3 things.

1.) Adjust my light storage solution to fit the 5 lights I have in rotation now.
2.) Design and print a bar end Spurcycle bell mount.
3.) Design and print a GoPro style Spurcycle bell mount for under most garmin/wahoo computer mounts.

Will print in Black PETG HF when it arrives tomorrow and the designs get a little further along. Only had white PLA+ in the Haus today to tinker with.

Then flipped the GoPro mount 90 degree's which gave the under mount bell ringer a better angle of attack when riding on the tops.

Oh yeah, total game changer with the Bambu Labs X1 Carbon combo now. Just perfect prints every time, but what impresses me most is the support placement and removal ease. Perfection and it fits nicely on my existing workbench. I did add some small L brackets between the workbench top and the wall to stabilize things.

Welcome to the Bambu famiry. They've done a great job making the entire user experience very painless. The Bambu wiki is also excellent as well. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of the Bambu fb groups, it's just a bunch of whiney b!tches and trolls/shills.

Very nice! I've had great luck with Bambu filament but I haven't tried other brands so ymmv. I usually buy in bulk to save some cash, and have also printed spools to save some coin as well when a filament I want isn't available with a spool.

There are a lot of prints in makerworld which are useful, but you will find settings and parameters are all over the place, so I rarely print anything from makerworld straight away. I bring it into studio and apply my preferred settings.

I'm jealous of the X1 Carbon, but I do keep giving my little A1 a workout on a weekly basis! Haha
