A while back I built a cart for my shop with tool storage a dedicated space for off cuts.



Over the past year, it has gotten pretty heavy and difficult to move. This morning I decided to empty out the longer pieces of steel and see what all is there.

I think I found the source of the mass issue. I‘ve got a solution in the works for tomorrow.

Not in my garage (unfortunately) but I used a friend’s lathe to make a new version of a piece for my miter saw stop.
Just a simple turning with a thru hole and a counterbore.
The old stop was just a bit too small in diameter.

Yes, I could have made it on the drill press but using the lathe was very enjoyable.
I’ve missed using that tool since I retired. Only the second time I’ve used a lathe in the last 10 years!

I'm constantly cutting and throwing much of it away since it grows like crazy.

I received a ton of flak on a group or two for not "giving any away or even selling them" to people that want them. I was like I tried giving it away and no one took me up on it!

Hard to see but it's the stuff there on the left. I need to pull the weeds and toss out even more succulent stems and leaves.

Working on a trailer project that just kind of landed in my driveway. I think it started life as a tent trailer and changed careers to a utility trailer years ago.

I stripped the old rotten decking, cut everything off the frame that I didn't immediately think might be useful, and started wire wheeling and globbing some paint on. Still have some decisions to make on the end size (4x8, 5x8, or even 6x8), type of decking, and maybe hitch ball size.

Trying, of course, to spend as close to $0 as possible.

wired up my switch panel, found one dead one and two that I will never use (Winch, I have intentions Of running a wireless winch controller. And the horn, this panel is made for boats more so. I will put a momentary button closer to the ignition key.). Hell I don’t even want the cigar lighters.

then wired up the light bar and alligator clipped power to the horn which scared 3 lives out of the neighbor‘s cat who likes to sneak into my garage when a door is open.

now to order up a more suitable switch panel and install the stereo After the Nuetral safety switch is installed on the center console.5164A7A4-0495-4B79-94DD-66263F9A0AC6.jpeg

It's been a busy week, finishing up a bunch of stuff....
Outside the barn, I finished up our rain harvesting project. Still need to tie in a CalFire hydrant, but for now have an outlet I can hook my HF water pump to for fire protection. Now just need some rain to get it full. I figure 2600 gallons will take a couple decent storms.

Inside the barn, I had ordered a roof rack for the truck, but the track nuts they sent had screwed up threads. I have an old Crafstman Tap/Die set that my father in law gave me at least 30 years ago....worked like a charm.

Lastly, I finally finished and installed the banquette the boss requested last Spring. Of course, she immediately covered it with pillows so you can't even see it :)

Had some good finds this weekend - not sure how, but came out of the swap meet with 6 pedal cars. Been sorting through that, but I did manage to spend some time this weekend cleaning them up. More importantly though - I scored (2) body hammers at the meet. Both were identical and the guy selling them was very grouchy, but I was pleased with the find regardless. I’m always looking for these and they rarely pop up.

When I purchased these, the gray handled one was in good shape, just needed a dressing. I washed and rubbed a few coats of oil on the handle and threw a coat of paint on it after cleaning up the faces.

The green one is a slightly different story - I don’t have any other photos, but they were the exact same hammer. Years ago, I had to cut up one of my favorite body hammers to make it fit the project at hand. I kept the long section with the rounded pick in my toolbox waiting for an opportunity. I loped the sharp pick off the other hammer, and TIG’d the rounded pick to that hammer. Dressed the new hammer, fitted a new handle, stained and painted.

I can already tell the green one is going to be a “go-to” for me.

Got the shock back together. Only 3 hrs to bleed all the air bubbles out.

Been working on the heat shield to keep the rear exhaust from baking the shock, and the wiring/battery that Honda decided to mount directly above it. I get it. It only had to last a few years in their opinion. They had no idea people would still be riding these things 25+ years on.

Fiddled around this AM. Tightened some loose parts on one of my Coleman 500A stoves--turns out, living in the Toy in a tight-fitting case while driving on washboard roads tends to loosen threaded parts up. Put that on my regular maintenance list.

Packed up some gear I just sold for shipping.

Took a walk before it got too hot then basically f'ed off for the rest of the day. I intend to continue f'ing off for the rest of the holiday.

It ain't easy, but someone's go to do it.

It's now beer thirty.

Decided to clean the dryer duct, so I dug out the brush and pole extensions. I did not find my extra set of extensions to allow cleaning the full length of the duct, so I had to fab an adapter to use the larger chimney brush pole extensions. The dryer poles have a 5/16 bolt thread and the chimney poles have a 1/4 NPT thread. I cut a male air hose quick disconnect fitting, then drilled the center hole to 5/16, first with a step bit to keep the hole centered, then finished drilling with a 5/16 drill. Inserted the bolt into the cut off fitting and tig welded together. After that I cleaned the duct and replaced the vent hood.

As the Internet is known to do, I shared these on a group on Facebook that I thought would appreciate it and was promptly called a liar! While I usually know better than to engage with trolls, I did stop out at the stop and grab the other half of the hammer I cut off, and the TIG torch for a photo. I’m sure I’ll regret that with comments about my tungsten or torch of course lol.

To clarify a bit more on my previous post - The back 3/4 of the green “Long Round Pick” hammer originally existed on the red hammer. The red hammer had to be converted to a “close quarters” hammer for a previous project. As I noted above, I purchased (2) hammers that were identical, same as the gray hammer. The remains from that are shown below the modified hammer.

I guess I’ll stash this leftover piece back away in the toolbox and see if another orphan shows up someday.

exactly, I don't remember what she found difficult but this Mac has served us well, I never did get the hang of Unix properly, a bloke gave me access to a shell a long long time ago and I ended up with eleventy million processes open

Replacing and upgrading the whole front suspension on the 67 cougar while I have the front fenders off to get it ready to paint. How old do you guys think my sweet Sears Heavy Duty Plus shocks are? They don't really act like shocks anymore, its amazing the car drove as nice as it did. Think they have a lifetime warranty? I seem to remember the Heave Duty Plus shocks did. Even made in the USA.

Maybe because I'm observant and I'd like to believe that most of what folks say isn't entirely BS, I believe you. The weld joint isn't that hard to see, even 'though you did a great job.

I think he was indicating the lack of safety glasses. I don't think that is an unreasonable call out, as most modern shops and shop classes (back when there was such a thing) mandated safety glasses.

Don't you remember Norm Abram's "Safety Speech"? (my son knew it by heart at 3...)
