Where do you come up with such nonsense? Based on what do you believe that the Harbor Freight will outperform a Bosch (assuming you are talking roto hammer and not some worthless hammer drill). Why because somebody on the internet drilled a few holes in concrete that was 40 years old. How demanding is that? How about chipping and breaking with that roto hammer. How about drilling a 5/8 hole 8 inches deep? How about whether the roto hammer can be repaired when it breaks or just tossed? How about the parts availability and longevity of the tool?

Is there a reason you feel a need to be so condescending? Yes we are talking roto hammer. The last time I was using it I was drilling 5/8s holes at HD of all places. That size hole was at the top capacity of Bosch drill I was using. It did the job but just barely. I went through several very expensive bits doing it. At the next HD the rep was nice enough to grab a bigger drill from the rental dept. It made the job much easier. How would the HF tool compare? Honestly I can only guess from the reviews of the people who actually used it and the fact that it is a higher capacity unit. It would be great to do a side by side comparison.

If I didn't know the person what else do I have to go on. When I see a good box filled with the best tools I think well theres a person who takes pride in their equipment so they more than likely take pride in their work and if I seen someone who had a US general box filled full of pittsburg tools* I would think well theres a person who is pretty cheap(seeing as they are getting paid to use them) I wonder if he will cut corners on the work.

BTW the mechanic my family uses only has Snap On($83,000 invested) and does a wonderful job.

*No offense to members of this board who use tools described above.

Interesting, I would see a person who can't judge tools based on quality but only brand, one that doesn't know the value of a dollar and has probably neglected his financial future because of his need to buy expensive tools, one that probably isn't very confident. $83k in personal hand tools? I don't know your mechanic and can't judge him but that seems insane! :shocking:

That must be comforting thoughts for you that everyone who uses something nice or dresses nice lacks confidence. Great rationalization going on there.

Its certainly as logical as assuming everyone who doesn't dress in the most expensive clothes or use the most expensive tools is inferior.

Just because it has a 1/8 bigger chuck capacity it is a superior unit? You can guess based on that? But can you guess whether the Bosch might be better because it was made by Germans in a modern world class factory vs a Chinese sweatshop were the workers were paid $1 dollar a day. What would your guessing tell you there?

Whether you like it or not society makes judgments. It's not about inferiority it's really about just getting it together. It's about demonstrating to others that you are ready and care. One of the judgments in business and life is that appearance indeed matters. If you do not like that about the world, then you are going to be fighting City Hall until the day you die.

Breaker? OK, now we are going too far. Light chipping, OK, breaking is starting to get ridiculous. Please define "breaking."

This thing can bust up a slab too. I better make my first visit to Freight and get one because I was just going to rent a jack hammer.

Yes light breaking/chipping. It's not an 80lb jackhamer. Keep it in context dude.

You clearly have no interest in this drill so why comment? Hell, I'd bet your computer keyboard is made in China. Better throw it away as parts aren't available.

I don't know and that is exactly why I used the word guess. I honestly haven't checked the COO on the Bosch. It might be Germany but that would surprise me. If it is Germany that does not mean it would out perform a larger unit from another manufacturer. I can only go by the reports from those that have used the tool in question and exactly why I would love to test them side by side. Hell if I had some concrete to drill I would go buy the HF unit just have some factual data to post! :)

The one thing I do know is that COO is no longer an accurate way to judge quality. I bought the Kobalt set ($35 on sale $10) that is clearly way below the equivalent Duralast ($19.95 normal on line price). The Taiwanese tool is clearly superior to the US tool. I am I saying that is always true? No. I am saying judging a tool by its COO (and often times brand) is out dated thinking.

Correct and often the judgments made by the part of Society that is OCD are 100% wrong. I'd rather be honest and logical than follow empty conventions that are untrue. :)

Isn't that funny? 99% of all computer equipment is made in China and Taiwan. Yet we have US companies making huge amounts of money on the sale of those products. I live in Portland where Nike and Adidas are based. Both employee thousands of workers doing designing, marketing and management at very high salaries.

The Bosch roto hammer is German. You bought the Bosch and didn't check? Weird. Why exactly did you buy the Bosch then? If they slipped one by you and made it in China then why didn't you just go to your Harbor Freight and buy the famed HF $39 rotohammer.

I have that Kobalt set too and while it is not Snap-on, it is better than what I have seen of Duralast, so we are going to disagree there too. I am not impressed with Duralast and I am less impressed with Chinese Copiers.

COO has never been the only way to judge quality but it has always been one indicia of quality. I don't think most on here judge a tool by its COO but some prefer to buy American products so that Americans can have jobs. Given a choice between an American product and a China product, I'm willing to pay 20-100 percent more to keep American's employed. Obviously, I am in a minority on this forum and in the US at this time. I also don't see the quality in the China tools that others are seeing. I am still seeing the same poor quality stuff that I have seen for years. In other words, I don't see them improving. Mainly, because they are not asked to improve quality, they are asked to make it cheap so that more people will buy these products and the profit margins will be greater.

You have no idea what a professional is. Why don't you define it. It has come to mean anyone who gets paid for a job. That is how it is used here. Professional means squat to me.

If you don't think appearances matter then you have a lot to learn.

Had a guy put his foot through a popcorn ceiling in a house I owned a few years ago. Someone recommended a guy to do the repair and I called him. A black guy showed up in a beat up old truck with one fender literally hanging on, wearing unlaced work boots, looking sloppy as hell. I almost didn't let him in, but he came highly referenced. First thing he did was step out of his shoes at the door and came in socked feet to check the job. He went back out, gathered his tools and supplies, then came in and taped off a small "room" with plastic to enclose the area. Every time he entered the house, he stepped out of his shoes. He did the drywall part of the repair, then mixing up some dry ceiling material outside in a bucket, he came back in with a wide heavy brush and proceeded to dip the brush and fling the ceiling material at the ceiling by hand. This guy did the best ceiling patch job I had ever seen. When it dried completely, you could not even find the original damaged area. I happily paid him and found out he had driven almost 100 miles one way to do my job, along with several others on his route of travel. He left, and I was still shaking my head in satisfied amazement.

My question to you is, was this guy a "professional?

When I see a box of all Snapon, unless its some old timer, I figure the mechanic doesn't have much self confidence and needs to hide behind expensive tools when they screw up. ***

The best mechanics I know are fairly demanding on their tools, and won't keep anything that doesn't perform, or toss anything that does. They get about as excited over a new Snapon ratchet as new shoe laces, its just tools, the mechanic on the end is all that matters.

*** New kids I see dumping half their paychecks on the truck I can't help but feel pity for, and hope they develop enough pride to stop following the herd.

LOL, this place is getting to be too much. Now, if a mechanic has Snap-on tools he lacks confidence. UMMM, maybe because you buy Harbor Freight and cheap stuff that these strange thoughts makes you feel better about yourself and your ways. Put down that guy who decided he wanted to buy top quality instead of pay the China Store. "Boy, that Snap-on tool guy lacks confidence, if he had Harbor Freight he would be like me and full of confidence." Some people are amazing with their rationalizations and how far they go to make themselves feel good. Oh yeah, those guys looking over the Dual 80's on the truck never get excited. They are just wannabes to the Harbor Freighters. It must be fun living in your own bubble; how can I erect one?

COO is an excellant indicator of quality especially made in Germany.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Made_in_Germany

While made on China is associated with poor quality, if you noticed more and more high end brands that make things in china leave the COO off of the product, hide it, print it small, and a designed in... above it, etc.

Obviously, I am in a minority on this forum and in the US at this time. I also don't see the quality in the China tools that others are seeing.

I also don't see the quality but then again most people that buy chinese goods only care about low prices. I just don't know why they feel the need to justify it...

Bingo... You Said it Man... I kinda felt bad for the "Import" Crowd back in the day and Now We've done a 180 and If you buy/own Snap on it because: lack of confidence, your bragging, wasting Money, Trying to cover up your Poor Mechanical skillz, ruining your life/credit, Addicted to the Truck, Making a poor Financial decision... etc.. etc.... etc.... These Kids make me LOL... Just because someone wasnt smart enough to buy in moderation/Buy Used and keep there finances in check they think everyone is Prone to FAIL.

Sorry. I was just trying to have an honest discussion and separate the emotion and rhetoric from the logic. Its pretty tough on this issue. My apologies if I was too contentious.

Steve, you know I respect you and your opinion, so let me ask you a question.

Don't you think that if we just let the HF addicts smoke their weed in their own threads, and the SO junkies freebase their drug in their own threads, the problem would be solved? What gives the perception of the great divide here is when the two camps keep colliding in these contentious threads, despite the fact that everyone knows no amount of talking is going to change anyone's perspective.

I'm not singling you out, man, I'm just addressing this type of thread in general. We get them every week.

Me, I don't care what tools anyone buys or where they come from. I can't control anyone outside of my own damn self, and unless the issue is of great importance, I try not to bother making the effort.

I think you are right though. If the SO fans wouldn't jump in HF threads and put down people posting their experience (And vice versa too) things would be much more harmonious.

BTW I didn't say "some Snapon" in their box, I said all Snapon, no Proto, no Mayhew, no Hazet, no Stahlwille, just a clone of the lead mechanic who only buys Snapon.

BTW if your a confident professional why would you give a rats behind what I think?

Dave, I believe that there are plenty of Tool brands for everyone. I think Consumers should buy whats best for them, Whether its at HF or off the Truck. Ill admit i think we would be better supporting American manufacturing companies but thats a subject that goes well beyond these threads. Its pretty obvious that Members/Consumers dont like hearing that they made a poor decision on purchases Regardless of Coo or Brand Name. IF you go back thru most of these problematic threads you will see that its Not 1 sided in the Bashing Department. You might not agree that comments similar to:

If you buy/own Snap on it because: lack of confidence, your bragging, wasting Money, Trying to cover up your Poor Mechanical skillz, ruining your life/credit, Addicted to the Truck, Making a poor Financial decision... etc.. etc.... etc....

are similar to telling someone that there costing US jobs shopping at HF but its the same thing essentially. I buy what i want to buy, I look for opinions here at GJ but when the Dollar hits the table its ultimately my decision based on my belief's.

BTW if your a confident professional why would you give a rats behind what I think?

No, I agree Steve: the bashing is two-way. Therefore, I propose that the SO/tool truck guys stick together, and the HF/bargain guys stick together, each in their respective corners. Nothing is gained through the weekly ******* matches.

I work for acompany with over 150 mechanics and 23 stores. I have yet to see any mechanic with all one brand. I have worked at other companies and never seen a mechanic with all one brand. I know lots of mechanics at other companies and have visited them before, guess what, no mechanic with all one brand.

Where are these mechanics with all Snap on?

I bought snapon for a while until I got tired of the dealers attitude, told him to fawk off. Most of my recent purchases are cornwell but theres no dealer anymore so thats really a PITA to warranty stuff so I just replace it with Mac because thats the only dealer that comes around now. That next Cornwell dealer is gonna love me the first time he shows up.

I still dont understand why people insist on going into threads to complain about the topic of the thread. I personally dont care for HF stuff and usually dont go in them, but this one caught my eye because I have drilled a few holes in concrete lately and it was aggravating to say the least. I might check out this drill because Ive got a few more to do and just cant justify another $300 tool that I dont even use occasionally.

We get it, The people that buy HF are just morons that are too cheap to buy quality tools so they must do crappy works. And the SO crowd are just rich morons that dont know the value of the dollar and are compensating for their lack of mechanical ability.

This horse has been dead for a while now, can everyone just agree to move on and ignore others buying habits and only comment on the particular tool if you have first hand experience with it.

Dave thats a Tough Order.. I think there's a Reason We have Mod's. LOL.. To Break it Down... The Import Crowd doesnt want to be associated with "Lesser Quality" and the USA guys dont want to be told that a $20 dollar Auto Zone ratchet is just as good as the Snap on Copy. I love seeing actual Reviews, Plain and Simple..... Snap On, Matco, Cornwell have had years to prove themselves, You can find Used, Abused and still going strong versions all over the Place. I Still have Longevity doubts to some of these HF Tools, Maybe Time will change my Mind.. Dunno, Till then im still gonna build my collection of USA tools 1 used Bargain at a Time.

I agree about reviews in general being great.

I also agree that it's hard for people to avoid getting sucked into these ******* matches, UNTIL it starts to annoy you and make you think the board is all fractured. Then, it should be easy to step back, stay out of threads that you know will piss you off, and just go into the threads where you can converse with like-minded people.

I have a question for actual users of this drill:

The instructions say to run the tool for ONE MINUTE before use (without load), to ensure everything is greased properly.
Do you do this before EVERY use, or just before the FIRST use?

Really? You just hold the trigger for about a minute? Do you need the bit in place?

HD had the milwaukee version on sale a while back for $149 (half off). I picked up one and only used it for maybe 40-50 bolts but it is a great unit. If it was not for the sale I would have picked up the HF unit for the amount I will use it.

My question is the bits that HF sells? Do the SDS bits hold up?

Nope. Just pull the trigger an let er rip..
Also, coat the bit shank head beforehand with a small amount
of bit grease. This chuck lubrication assures smooth action and longer service life.

I hate to say this but.. We've never lubed ours, nor ran it first. I know, abuse, etc. Just used it today for about 2 hours straight. No issues.

My Dad has been using one for basement work. Has done probably over 50 holes. Many 5/8s in size.

He says it's amazing and has impressed him incredibly.

I got a few sills here and there around my place that need replacing. I've been using a regular drill..Which is just plain stupid. I burned it out. Had to stand on top of it to get a good bite in the concrete :lol_hitti

He says he had a coupon for $49. Will try to find that and will go pick it up.

I just need maybe a dozen holes or so. 1/2 in diameter.
