You know what is so great about this thread? :headscrat It is a fantastic restorations/upgrade of an old time garage for sure. But more than that is the way Chris and Thomas have shared the process and thus part of their lives with us. There have been many other very neat builds on this forum, but alas the owners only seem to post a few times and then loose interest. I want to take a moment to thank them and let them know I’m here at least once a day checking for the next installment and hoping it isn’t the test.:bounce:

The test will come soon after our one-year anniversary of the thread or when the "hits" reach 1/2-million (whichever comes first). It's all up to the participants! Yikes!! I guess I had better get busy with writing the questions soon (I did promise multiple choice, but I may throw in a few True/False). I think I'll have participants in the test PM me with their answers to level the playing field for those who haven't had time to study/review or for those who just joined the fun and not had time to digest the mountains of information included in the past 1844 posts. And, of course, it will be open book (well, at least "open thread") and I won't publicly report individual scores. I expect all "A"s. No pressure...

I just got through rebuilding a old drill press for my shop....

2639849170101948653S425x425Q85.jpg

So I have had good luck with it. I do use a beefed up power supply but any battery charger will work.

Nice work willy, thanks for the follow up. At first glance that drill press caught my eye. The pulley system was very similar to....

IMG_3365.jpg

...this one. My father bought this Delta floor drill press brand new in 1936.

IMG_3367.jpg

Fortunately I didn't have to restore it.

IMG_3369.jpg

It's all original (excepting the work light and on/off switch of course) It's been in our family for 74 years now. He taught me to really appreciate well made, old wood working equipment. Looks like you do too!

Thank you again for your information.

rlwhitetr3b (try and say THAT 3 times fast!!), what heartfelt thought, really. It turns out that today is the 11th month anniversary of me starting this thread, back in Dec 28, 2009 and 93 pages ago :scared: While restoring the shop was an enjoyable experience, doing this thread has certainly been equally so. If it wasn't so rewarding I doubt that I would have kept at it. Many, many thanks for taking a few moments and sharing those thoughts.

I've said it before and I really do mean it, all of you are just friends we haven't met................yet!

Now Chris is sweet and all, but if you guys want to see another side of her, just get her going on that test thing.......talk about ugly, brother you have NO idea......none. That's her deal, I want no part of THAT. Here we are all warm and fuzzy feeling and then watch and see what happens....don't say I didn't warn. You think I kidding.......34 years of teaching will do strange things to a person. Watch you'll see......:wtf:   :willy_nil As for me I'm heading out of the country when that thing hits, my mama didn't raise a fool, no siree bob. I'm heading for the hills...............color me goooooone.......:hellobye:

Here are some more "new" old photographs from Nov, 2005 and I'll show contrasting current pictures of the same areas where possible.

DSCN0064.jpg

This is in the north room addition looking toward the front of the shop. The bright spot in the background is the front door open, a work bench to the left. If you notice it's sunny outside, the door has light streaming in and looking to the left you can see bright sun through the window above the bench. Now notice how very dark it is inside the shop and the poor lighting. That's a big reason why I couldn't get more interior pictures. I was using a 35 mm camera and it just wasn't up to the task of lighting a large, dark space. My daughter was using a digital camera for all these series of photographs and most of them worked out well enough. You can see the narrow pathway through the shop that I've talked so much about. The vast majority of the interior space was used for storage of "material".

IMG_3284.jpg

Pretty close to the same vantage point. Use the window to orient yourself, it's the same one as above.

DSCN0065.jpg

A slightly different view of the same area, just panned slightly left. This gives you as better view of the main workbench in the shop. Look toward the far end of the bench and you'll note the old vice. These benches were just hopeless, that's why I replaced them all. Oil soaked and a true fire hazard among other deficiencies. That's a valve grinding machine I believe on the near end of the bench below the head gasket. It was taken by one of the sons.

IMG_3403.jpg

Same perspective. I'd say the main contributing factor to making the shop a proper place to work, besides cleaning it out, was better lighting. Note in the 2005 pictures the area anywhere above the top of the window level is a black void. There was no ceiling, it was just open all the way to the bottom of the roof. All the interior lumber has soaked up welding smoke and from earlier times, forge/blacksmithing smoke which darken all the interior surfaces. Installing a ceiling and using highly light reflective material on all the interior surfaces with ample, good quality light fixtures made a dramatic difference as seen.

DSCN0067.jpg

This picture is just in case you wanted a close of the bench. I just cannot work like this, can't do it, not happening!!

DSCN0068.jpg

If you were standing at that bench in the previous picture and turned around this what you saw. To the right, the bright strip is sunlight reflecting off the right side of the doorway into his then, coal room which is now my 1/2 bathroom. Foreground the key making machine and behind it the only heat source in the shop an old furnace which just heated the area right around it.....after a fashion. In reality it just gave the illusion of heat. I have to admit it did take the chill out of the air but it was still cold working in there in the dead of winter. It didn't help that there were air leaks everywhere either. That's the furnace that almost caused the building to burn to the ground in the late '70's. Left is the masonry chimney that served the furnace and forge.

IMG_3288.jpg

I think this is better use of that space. The doorway is the best way to compare them, this picture is pretty close to the exact same spot.

FabRm2sm-1.jpg

This picture of the fabrication room was taken a few weeks later than all the ones we've seen up to now in this particular post. I include it to help you orient in the below picture. Note the aluminum ladder hanging on the wall. The bench top in this picture has been cleaned up a little, but is the next picture...

DSCN0075.jpg

....it hasn't been touched. This is deep into the fab room. There is the aluminum ladder hanging on the wall in the background. I haven't done any cleaning when this was taken. Best to notice the vice in the right foreground. It's bolted to the cast iron bench which itself is piled high with, ah, er, mmmmm......"stuff". :dunno: You can also see brazing rod (it's coated with white flux) piled front left. At one time the cast iron bench is where all the brazing work was accomplished.

IMG_3394.jpg

This should help out. Same space, same cast iron bench, same vice...... different work space philosophy.

DSCN0079.jpg

That of course is Mr.Johnson's red Lincoln arc welder on the right. The welding bench itself is hidden by more.... well, OK for the lack of a more accurate term, "junk"- there, I said it! The white object above the welder is a 5 gallon plastic jug. Attached to the jug is a 4" round pipe which was used as his exhaust system. The wide side of the jug was cut out and connected by the pipe to an exhaust fan mounted on the exterior wall. There was a flexible joint in the pipe which allowed it to be positioned right over the work area.

IMG_3294.jpg

His welder is still nestled in it's same spot. If you look closely you'll see an old black hose installed on the top handle. That's an old universal flexible radiator hose that he used to insulate the metal handle of the welder.

OriginalWeldingCorner.jpg

In this photograph from about 1968, look closely at his welder. See that same radiator hose is there, even back then, 42 years ago. I don't know when it was first installed, but it's been there as long as I can remember. Once I cosmetically restore his welder I'll leave that hose in place. It's one of those touch stones that I cherish so much. To me that is part of the welder, part of the shop and part of the heritage found out there. Those little things are important to me.

*ahem*.. that Wilton bullet looks a bit neglected in the grand scheme of things...

& why is the vise on the welding bench bolted to a piece of wood? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a welding vise?

Ever the skillful observer Rick! The Wilton on the cast iron bench WAS neglected, truly. It would not swivel and was almost impossible to open or close. Once those problems were corrected, new jaw faces were constructed and installed on it.

Wliton6Sm1.jpg

As it is now, it's serviceable and on the "list" awaiting further cosmetic attention along with it's big brother seen here.

As for the "Hercules" machinist vice occupying the welding bench at present...

IMG_3296-1.jpg

...it is a machinist vice and not intended to be used as a welding vice. I've got it clamped to the oak board so that it can be easily removed. I'm just using the welding bench as a convenient storage place for it at present. It will in all probability end up out in the barn. I haven't settled on a welding vice as yet. I'm leaning heavily toward a suggestion from one of our sharp friends out there who thought the blacksmith vice found in the tool shed (see page 45, post #888) might work wonderfully as a welding vice. If I'm not mistaken that advice came from you my friend, in post #896, same page!!

The other possibility is the 3" vice found in the lean-to, page 50, post #998. The machinist vice that's there now is just too nice to see it get beaten up and welding spattered.

BTW Rick, "it's" all packed and I should have it shipped to you tomorrow. ;)

Tom and Chris .....I've been plowing through this thread, err' adventure for days on end !

There's so much to relate to and also puzzle over......Virgils name tag appearing, the ol' flattie manifold find and gifting.......and of course the complete restoration of this special property !

Back in the day, I too fell under the spell of a similar garage.....my friend Kay Sissell rented the old Bodger Seed Company garage in South El Monte California . It was built sometime in the early 1900's to store and keep their fleet of machines in top shape.

The charm of the garage was it's early mission style architecture, long story short that's where I built my first drag cars and Sissell's Automotive became famous for their six cyclinder racing engines and head porting operation .

But as the seed company land became more valuable the garage property was slated for modern offices and we had to move . The all new Sissell's Automotive never had the same feeling as the ol' mission garage.......:(

Anyway you've inspired me to clean up my own space, as it too was starting to become a resting place for old memories and less of a work place......could be I'm just getting old ? Hee !

By the way, I got hooked on Racing when I was just a kid when I happened on Art Ingals racing his first go kart at the Pasadena Rose Bowl parking lot in the mid fiftys.....

Your pictures of the Johnson kart and your own first racing machines intrigued me to read on ......let the adventure continue and thanks for sharing a part of your life with us all here !

And for the record this was my first post here at the GJ .

Well Thomas I finally got the care package boxed and mailed your way c/o Canada Post. I needed the vacuum gauge but have included an old hack saw. I hope you have use of these tools/ test equipment. Great work you are doing, i know what a mind strain it is to try and keep all of the treasures, Henry.

I used this saw the other day and even included the used blade.(sitting on the box being sent to you)

It occurred to me that there are aren't many photographs of the approach to the shop from the west. All of the following photographs are new and current as of Nov, 2010, 5 years after our purchase.

IMG_3371.jpg

The shop and barn both are hidden behind the trees and brush. Dark object to the left is the barn and to the right is the shop. Off to the far right you can just make out the old sign out front. The property on the west side of the shop (nearest the camera) is still a farmers field.

IMG_3372.jpg

The hill the property is situated on is apparent here. The old family mail box to the right of the red fire hydrant off in the distance is at the top of the hill. Yes, it still has Mr.Johnson's name on it.

IMG_3375-1.jpg

The end of the shop carport is just emerging in the center.

IMG_3396.jpg

That's the hedge row trees that mark the west edge of the property.

IMG_3399.jpg

As I've mentioned before, when I purchased the property, all five acres were covered with, among other plants and trees, honeysuckle as seen here. Shows how it was almost impossible to walk anywhere without cutting your way through. The barn can just be seen in the far back. The left of this picture is the "other side"....

IMG_3398.jpg

... while the right of the picture is "my side". You rarely get to see a well maintained hedge row anymore. Those are some mighty tough trees.

IMG_3400.jpg

This picture is a nice contrast of before and after all in the same picture. It's late fall and all the plants are dormant. Everything will green up in spring.

Now Bill, when you do see Dickie....

DSCN0186.jpg

Tell him I've got two tricycle's here.......

DSCN0189.jpg

...not really sure which one is his. When was it that it got dropped it off to be fixed, 45 years ago?? :dunno:

DSCN0190.jpg

Just tell him to be glad this didn't happen to it! Not only do I still have it (them) but I'm not going to charge him storage fees.....

DSCN0089-1.jpg

... even though this sign found in the lift room says I can. That's what a sport I am about this sort of thing. :)

True story, Dickie's Dad drooped his tricycle off to be repaired at the shop at LEAST 45 years ago and, well, it just somehow never happened or it didn't get picked up, not really sure which it was. Anyway I'd feel just awful charging him all those storage fees! :(

I wonder now how many other people I've sleep deprived?? Now I'm starting to feel guilty about it all...........geez didn't think about that.......and how about all those poor people in New Zealand being driven mad by Sick Puppy 'cause of this, how about them.....boy I started this with the best intentions, really did, and now look.......shoot for all I know they'll be coming for me any minute now........Chris, don't answer the door, OK? Maybe if I grew a beard or something, wear dark glasses and a trench coat.........boy, who would'a thought it would end this way..............

Now that is an interesting story.

There have been a few "interesting" stories connected with the shop. I'll get tell them as I get to the associated pictures and post them. When you look at all the *ahem* "material" seen in and around the shop, there's background on how some of it came to be. Some of it I know, some has been lost to time unfortunately or fortunately perhaps?

The thing about Dickie is that he lives just a mile down the road from the shop. Figured he'd be more motivated to pick up his cherished trike. I suppose I should deliver it to him, after all he has let me have the fun of storing it and all. That ought to be worth something don't ya think? :dunno:

I admit that I lost a few winks here and there getting to the heart of the material, but Tom don't worry.......Chris had me taking notes for the big test coming up shortly, so I just had to make a through study.......don't want to be unprepared when the time comes.

Say......I was just wonder'n .......why that switch plate was so ......how should I say it......a bit whopper' jawed over near the lift room door ......seems out Oh' character for your way of detailin' ........of course as you say it's "Just a garage" .......? :O

Maybe page 100...it all depends on when the "magic" number of 1 year anniversary, 2000 posts, and/or 1/2 million "hit" count happens. Keep taking notes! We're almost at 450,000 now. I really need to get crackin' on those questions in between work hours in my shop.

For all you test worry-warts (including JC23 who may not be having as much time to study due to the Battle of the Killer Cans, which are looking awesome),
I rarely gave announced tests in my classroom because it put all this pressure on students (I didn't have any control over "benchmark" tests given by the district or state). I don't plan any math questions... unless there are math items somewhere on the thread. (clues: have many..., how big..., how old...)
This is all supposed to be fun! (We're nearing 460,000 hits - someone is trying to get the test over with before the holidays so they don't forget something over the break!) Don't forget this is "open thread", although I always found that "open book/notes" was harder for students because they thought they could just page through their books/papers to find the answers. The time is near.

Chris......when the hit count reaches 499,999, just wait .....the last poster will freeze up and won't do it because of that dreaded test waiting !

Beside Tom said he was heading for the hills when it was test time......hee !

Maybe he means he was going for a walk up the Johnsons hill or ???

Anyway I'm so ready for the test.......like ....what color was the lift in July of 2005 ?

Answer......black ......Wrong !

Correct answer.......multi rust primer......dang !

Next question......How many lifts did Mr. johnson have on the property ?

Could be a trick question though.......I hope Chris grades on a curve :)

what is up with the pipe wrench?

Remember in post #1837 when ZRX61 "volunteered" to treat the Diamond Cauk adjustable wrench as a test and mail it back to me to use as a gauge to see whether I mastered the art of oil dipping tools??

IMG_3342.jpg

As I was packing that adjustable wrench I found it had a broken jaw :( so I substituted the 9 AUTO wrench instead. I mailed it to him Tuesday and he's posting it done here Thursday afternoon. That's some mighty fine work I'd say. I don't think it's a pipe wrench however, I think it came as part of the tool set with an early car, maybe, perhaps, possibly, could be, seems reasonable, that's my story and I'm sticking with it?? :dunno: Anyone out there recognize it or something similar as tools that came with cars in the early days? Anyone.......

Thanks Rick, nice work!

Say......I was just wonder'n .......why that switch plate was so ......how should I say it......a bit whopper' jawed over near the lift room door ......seems out Oh' character for your way of detailin' ........of course as you say it's "Just a garage" .......? :O

Oh that little thing.......why I'd completely forgotten about it.......again...........after all it's just a garage......so it'll be juuuusst fine the way it is..........except for one small thing.....IT'S MY GARAGE, THAT'S WHY IT'S SUCH A BIG DEAL......... I mean come on really, it's a switch plate, a simple little, no big deal, easy to install, anyone could do it yourself, some assembly required, batteries not included, ding dong, 4 screws and you're done- switch plate. Every time I go into the lift room there is .....still......lurking, leering, snickering  :tantrum2:  :uzi::shocking::rocketwho :gunfire::moon: I guess if I wasn't qualified to land a B767 to CAT III B minimums and all it wouldn't be sooooooo very embarrassing, really. But noooo, there it is all out of whack........still.........in front of everyone who comes to the shop.........

I'm so very glad you just had to bring that up didn't you, just had to.......couldn't leave well enough alone, or gloss right over, pretend it wasn't there, oh no, let's open that raw wound up and then pour some salt in it, thank you very much......................................

As you see it's a trifle with me anymore, hardly worth mentioning......

For all you test worry-warts............................ The time is near.

Chris

Did you see that, did ya??? And so it begins. Didn't I tell you so, didn't I try to warn you. This is not good, not good at all. Oh the humanity. Be afraid, be very afraid. Run for your lives while you still have the chance, RUN................:shocking:

<<raises hand>>

When I started reading this summer, I think I was up until 3am before I called it quits and picked up the next morning. I love the shop, the posts, and the attention to detail! Not to mention I've learned quite a few things from the thread, A+ read!

Well, see it doesn't count as much in the summer because the days are longer. But now with the sun going down so darn early (that's if you're north of the equator mind you) so it's extra effort I'd say.

Anyway as you mentioned this is a multi-informational thread and not just another pretty face. Thanks for the support.
