I called ahead to the next closest sears which is a little bit of a hike, and they checked to find no USA made ones there either.

Is this deal worth getting even with the non-USA version? Any noted difference in quality?

There is a big difference in quality between the USA-made sets and the Chinese-made sets. For the sets on sale, this applies to the locking flex and the Cross-Force. Both the chrome finish and the machining on the USA-made sets is high quality. On the Chinese-made sets, there is pitting in the chrome and the machining looks similar to Craftsman raised panels, with grooves in the wrench open ends.

As a side note, the locking flex wrenches are stout. Side by side with Gearwrench flexibles, they make the GW look like toys, as the Cmans are longer and thicker. However, not everyone is fond of the locking mechanism. If you needed locking flex, the USA made sets at 1/2 price are a steal IMO.

Gladiator 48" GearTrack Channel $6.27 @ Lowe's
I was at my local Lowe's yesterday and saw they had the Gladiator GearTrack Channels on sale buy one get one free. The website shows it as $6.27 each (same price basically)

*YMMV some people showing lower than $6.27 at their local Lowe's*

http://www.lowes.com/pd_182183-46-GAWC041PRY_0__?ipTrail=173.185.22.219&catalogId=10051&productId=1052077&pl=1&selectedLocalStoreBeanArray=%5Bcom.lowes.commerce.storelocator.beans.LocatorStoreBean%406769b8c7%5D&currentURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNtt%3Dgladiator&storeNumber=0681&Ntt=gladiator&langId=-1&errorURL=UserAccountView&storeId=10151

This works out to be $6.27 BOGO, so basically $3.13 each. Amazon is $35 for the 2 pack.

I'm not sure how thats going to work in-store though....I dont think the store is going to knock an additional 50% off to match the on-line price AND throw in the BOGO offer

Called a few more sears and finally found one that said they had the usa made flex heads in metric. Stopped by and they had one left of each metric and standard. Very lucky! No problem ringing up the craftsman club sales price at the register. Nice wrenches, thanks everyone for the heads up and info.

Yeah, I got mine too (the Crafsman Flexheads) but I had to resort to swapping them out for the loose ones to get USA. Craftsman club rang up at the register. I never even knew about that before. It's nice to get the last of its kind. Problem is that I will never be able to swap them out. After viewing the gearwrench stuff at Lowes I pretty much decided that I wasn't going that route no matter how cheap. These are very nice wrenches, comparable, but not quite, Armstrong level.

Mine showed. I just picked mine up.

Was the unit price the 6.27? I got 8 so it was 50 something and thats all it says i'm picking up. Nothing about BOGO. Guess I'll have to see.

Well no dice. Just 6.27ea. Y'all must have had the $3 price. Or just gullible employees.

I know everyone knows there is clearance at lowes, and I don't know if this specific deal was mentioned, but I picked up some gearwrench X-beam ratcheting wrenches, metric and standard, for 50% off, $35/set. They call it a 29pc set because it comes with bits (hex, allen, etc) and an adapter to ratchet them, kind of gimmicky if you ask me, but oh well. They are still 8 wrench sets. The price was right anyway.

They also had kobalt made in USA locking flex head ratcheting wrenches (reminded me a lot of the craftsman ones) on clearance for $50/set (I think that was 50% off as well). And tons of gearwrench individual wrenches, flex head and normal, all kinds of sizes, ranging up to pretty big (didn't look specifically, but definitely much bigger than 3/4), from around $4 to $8 IIRC. Definitely worth stopping by if you've been holding out.

I want to get in on this GearTrack deal...but mine is only showing $6.** for 1 online. Do you have to price match instore to get the BOGO? I'm kind of confused... If i add 2 to my online cart, its just 12.**.

pj_rage,

Have you seen individual Kobalt locking flex, ratcheting combination wrenches on clearance at your local stores during the last 2 months or in prior years?

Thanks,

Dave

I purchased the Craftsman (USA made), metric, 7 piece, locking flex, ratcheting combination wrench set via Craftsman.com for in-store pickup. Craftsman.com has a record of my Craftsman Club member number. I used the "Sears2011", $5 off $50 coupon and purchased the set for $61.08 (includes tax).

If your store has multiple sets, I would check each individual wrench in a set to make sure that it ratchets and locks properly at a few angles. I tested several sets. I found a few sets where the 8mm wrench locks at a some angle but loosens when pressure is applied to it. In addition, a larger wrench (>8mm) in a set would not ratchet clockwise or counter-clockwise.

To be honest, I haven't looked at tools in lowes in a while outside of the last few days because of the clearance and this thread. I didn't notice any kobalt locking individuals or ratcheting combos on clearance at the two stores I checked, but I wasn't looking for them either. The selection seems to be quite varies from store to store, so I would definitely check out your local stores.

The only ratchets I have seen on closeouts cost as much as a set, and were just the basic style. And I have only seen a handful of individual ratchets, but quite a few ratchet sets. I ended up getting a 1/2 inch drive set for $19 or something like that (like I needed another 1/2 inch ratchet). Only had a handful of sockets, so it was not a big set.

Stores I visited are clearing out the stuff pretty fast. And the sets tended to be the best deals. Bought a ten piece metric combo wrench set for $19 (less than $2 a wrench). Individual metric wrenches ranged from about $4 to $10, and the selection was sketchy.

Yeah it died shortly after I ordered mine. Basically you put 6 in your cart on the website and it automatically added 6 more for free. Printout showed 12 but only paid for the first 6.

Now I just need to find a deal on the cabinents and hooks.

Speaking of Craftsman, I just received an email from the "Craftsman Club" that has some deals (about 2:45pm central). The screwdriver set isn't one of them because I think I have gotten that set for $15 or so, about $5 less.

But I am curious about the 6-in-1 screwdriver that says get one free. When I click on the ad it just takes me to the regularly priced tool at $9.99. Oh well.

Let me start out with a YMMV disclaimer...

I have been wanting to try out a pass thru ratchet set for a while now, I looked at the Kobalt sets now that they are on clearance but I was concerned that even though it is a great price, what happens if one breaks? So I was looking at the Gearwrench stuff and then I read an old post on toolguyd about the upcoming Max Axess stuff from Crapsman. Anyway I noticed that it was in this months Craftsman Club, but I couldn't find it on sears.com, but it was on craftsman.com so I added it to my cart, selected a local store (said they had 3) and it showed up as $69.99 - 15% - $5 (SEARS2011) - $10 (member savings) = $46.74. I haven't seen a store brand pass thru set that was US made so I am assuming COO on this is either China or Taiwan, and usually I hate buying Crapsman tools that are not USA, but I figure I'll give it a shot after reading Stueys impressions of them.

(Craftsman Max Axess Tool Kit)

That's the post and tool kit Griff99 is talking about. Well, I'll be, it does show up at Craftsman.com now http://www.craftsman.com/shc/s/p_10155_12602_00929309000P but not Sears. Strange.

I haven't seen these in-store yet, but it's good to know that they're starting to pop up.

For reference, Gearwrench's Vortex, which seems to be a Sears exclusive set (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00930049000P) is comparable, but I liked the Craftsman ratchets a lot more.

Bear in mind that my impression was based on a brief hands-on preview and my experience with Gearwrench's past pass-thru sockets & accessories. I didn't have wrench-time with the Max Axess, but I didn't see any red-flags or blatant issues.

The COO is China or Taiwan. There was no COO on the prototype, but I cannot imagine it would be USA-made for the 2 low-profile ratchets and all those sockets at that price.

That is pretty cool. Haven't seen it before.
I like both the ratchet handle and the screwdriver handle, although not exactly sure what the screwdriver handle is for.
Both handle styles are popular for Craftsman.
Pop an extension and socket into the screwdriver handle and you've got a quick spinner. I think there's also a bit holder you can attach. Use the screwdriver for quick tightening final loosening and then switch to the ratchet for final tightening or initial loosening.

What prices are yall seeing on the 7 pc Kobalt ratcheting sets? I have one and tucked it way for tomorow. :)

I picked up a full set of 3/8in deep metric and SAE, 1/2in deep metric and SAE and a 9 piece mm boxed/open ended earlier today for less than $90 out the door.

For the kobalt flex ratcheting, I saw $49.** two days ago. Don't know which ones you were referring to.

Sounds to me like he pulled the ole' hide the duke. Stuffed it somewhere in the store so that no one else nabbed it before he got the price he was looking for.

I do that all the time. They found the gladiator project caddy I had squirreled away though. Granted it was super hid. I even checked the tool boxes looking for sets since I knew I probably wasn't the only one to do that.

I did the same thing but used my points to get an extra $4.46 off. It ended up being $44.82 after tax. And these are made in China, just picked mine up about an hour ago. No way i'd pay $69.99 for them. I doubt they will get much use, but i'm sure they will come in handy on those extra long bolts.
