Scored a plomb body hammer yesterday which got me thinking about my addiction to these tools. So here`s what i have so far show me yours!

From the top center down 1 older Blue pt then the plomb then 3 P&C 2 Snap on. The left side top is unknown the one under that is a Stiletto probably not a body hammer but i love it. And one the right side is another unknown brand or purpose.

Nice collection of hammers jabberwoki. I use Snap-on and Older Blue points on a daily basis. I have started to restore several old Plvmb/Proto body hammers. The quality and balance of these hammers are hard to beat. True American craftsmanship went into these tools.

It looks like the one on the right is a bricklayers hammer. With a little work to smooth the edges works good as heavier body hammer. Nice score! tt

I will display some of them tomorrow. The ones at work will have to wait till later in the week. I'll have to review how to post pictures. That will be a new adventure for me. I have posted a video, so it has to be similar

They seem to fetch a crazy amount of dough on ebay; then you could buy a whole set from martin! Just a crazy thought! :)

Yeah you may have a small fortune there, Jabberwock. Give Plombob a ring, he knows which hammers go for the big bux. Quite a fine collection there.

Does anyone know where to get handles that are at least similar to the original Plomb handles?

There was a 1427 Plomb in the box of old tools I bought a few weeks ago and I'd like to find a handle for it. :)

Sould be the same as a new proto? just paint the bottom of the handle green?

Proto doesn't make body hammers anymore and the handles are kind of a funny size and style. You can buy handles from Martin and StreamLine for body hammers.

That's a nice body hammer collection! It's easy to get addicted, I went from 3 to 14 in a matter of months.

I like both the Snap-on and the Martin hammers. I think I still do prefer the octagon shaped Snap-on handles, but the Martins are very nice as well. It's hard to compare because I don't have any duplicates across brands.

Here is a thread I made on the Snap-on pick hammer I restored.

I make my own Octagonal replacement handles for my Plvmb and Proto hammers. Let me know what length you want and I can make and ship you one. Just in box me with the details. I can also Parkerize them and reface them in whatever radius you want on the face. I've probably restored/renewed close to 100 hammers over the last 5 years.

Thanks. :) I'm not sure I can afford a custom-made handle right now, but I will keep you in mind. What do you charge for one, or should I PM you with that question?

Does anyone else dress the faces of their hammers & dollies etc? Some of mine are like mirrors.

I may be the sickest guy on the GJ when it comes to Body Hammers. I have a set of hammers that I have polished beyond rediculous. I use them for Aluminum work only. I will start out with a 120 belt on a Multitool and move up 200 points in grit till I get to 800 and switch to 1000 grit by hand till I get to 2000 and then use a finishing compound from there. It's a little overboard, but when working with Aluminum, any steel contamination can prove costly down the road. I coat them with a lite weight oil to prevent rust.

The others that I use on steel, I start with the 120 belt, go to 320 and finish with a Blue Scotch Brite belt on a Multitool grinder attatchment. I Usually check the hammers once a month to see if they need any re-surfacing. I have done the same with the dollies that I use with the steel. I generally use rubber coated dollies for Aluminum work.

I like my Martins :) http://www.flickr.com/photos/65002935@N03/5918561784/ As far as the story of Martin hammers correct me if I am wrong but originally the company the made Martin hammers was called Fairmount and Martin Tool and Die bought them out. All I can say is with the few that I have they have been great hammers, well balanced, lightweight, and can do the job well. Sorry didn't mean to highjack the post.

I would love to find a nice little Proto/Plomb but so far this is my collection of body hammers. I buy them on the cheap so dismiss the raged handles.

Ive made many slaps aswell

I've been on a body hammer kick again... I squeezed a few more in there and have 2 more in the mail!

I just got a Snap-on BF618B, here is a comparison with my Martin 168HC. These are both essentially the same hammer, high-crown cross peen.

since I have two now, I decided to modify the Martin. I wanted to do this a while ago, I flattened out the peen end.

I also modified my Beta hammer, I only used this once and it wasn't a very useful configuration before. I wanted two crowned cylindrical faces, the only off-the-shelf hammers lke this are Snapon BF615 and Martin 152G - both discontinued.

best "before" pic I have
