Good job. It reminds me of my grandpas garage, he had everything on a peg board. But defiantly not as organized as yours.

One step further would be to take a picture of every tool and paste it to the pegboard directly behind the place the tool will be stored. That way when you are done with the tools you konw where they go and if a spot is empty you know what tool is missing.... :headscrat

I'll bet he can take one look and tell if a tool is missing without pictures.:)

I like pegboard. I 'd have more if I had more wall space. I use it for stuff I use often or stuff I can't really find another place for.

Pegboard is part of the shop matrix. I say that things like welding hoods and face shields are better off not in a drawer. Things like a dust pan and foxtail or large circular blades. I have odd things like a 30" trammel on a hook along with straight edges. But then I have a lot of things on display too, like antique tools and parts.

They don't belong in a drawer or cabinet.

Yeah, no fooling. But I thnk it's my fault. I opined in post #14 that I thought he had too much **** hanging up. I should have said "stuff." But I DID say he was good at getting it all to fit!:bounce:

Seriously, I really DO like pegboard and I like parts of what he's done its just that (it loks like) he's hung EVERYTHING he owns on it. Besides, its just my
$.02 that its too much. Take it for what it's worth....$.02!

My personal issue with pegboard is that stuff gets covered in dust and grit. In my case, I find I don't use the hand tools I put up. They end up being just to look at and I use the stuff in my tool boxes more. I didn't mean to insult the owner of the garage. Mabe he shouldn't have let his buddy post the photos if all he was up for was agreement?

I was waiting for someone to call me out on being a little thin skinned with my first post. You're right. It was one of those cases of type fast and hit submit faster, but it wasn't my idea to post those pictures and once KCarGuy did I was curious what other tool people thought about it. I guess I became a bit defensive.

That isn't even remotely close to every tool I own, just the ones that I use on a regular basis. Carpenters use more tools than any other building trade -that statement will probably start a heated debate of it's own, but it's true and I've argued that point on the job site with plumbers, electricians, tinners, fitters, millwrights.....you name it, and all I had to do to win was count the number of hand tools that I had brought onto the job vs. what they had brought and then go into our gang box to do the same with the power tools.

Mechanics are a different matter entirely. Their potential hand tools are verging on infinite. In the majority of cases the work comes to them and for that reason the shop is their tool box and I can also see why a rolling tool box would be much more efficient in a mechanic's shop.

For me, however, pegboard is ideal. If I'm working in my garage everything I need is right there and if anything has been misplaced or left somewhere else I know it right away. Additionally if I'm heading to a new job and I know what kind of work I'm doing I just plop down a big Klein bag on my bench and grab everything that I need right off the wall and toss it in. When I'm done with a job everything goes right back on the board. You wouldn't believe how much time that saves. For a couple of decades when I got a call to go to a new job the next day I'd have to spend 2 to 4 hours going through a dozen tool boxes to round up everything that I was going to need, and I would often have to run out to a tool store to buy something that I couldn't find, assuming that I had left it on another job, only to find that missing tool weeks later.

To each his own, and this is my own.

Looks good to me..my shop is auto/weld shop, more tinkering than anything.. but I like my pegboard..not nearly as full as yours, but i keep the stuff i use all the time on it, its always handy without digging through all my toolboxes..a buddy of mine did the entire inside of his 24 x 30 garage in pegboard..that might be a bit much for me, but I'm sure its convenient..

I've succumbed to the 'puzzle' part of it even when I'm not using actual peg board.

BothDown1265137189.jpg

But most of the time it's out of sight.

BothUp1265137174.jpg

Even worse, I got dragged over into the obsessive-compulsive side of 'is there a version of that tool available with a red handle disease' for above my (also red -- yikes!) bench.

Lucky for me, there are a lot of decent tools out there available with red handles.

Forgive me for butting in abomino, but in real life you really shouldn't have to defend yourself over the use of your pegboard. If it suits you and it works for your purposes, then that is all that matters. You have an impressive and organized workspace. It works for you, but you can't please the nay-sayers. That said-

I love pegboard. I have some waiting to be utilized, and I have some waiting to be put up. But in the grand scheme of things, is it really worth arguing over?

I have a 1 year old baby, 2 mortgages, and I lost my job. Pegboard arguments seem a bit trivial to me, personally. The sound of my giggling baby seems to make me put these things in perspective when the car and garage stuff gets a bit 'tedious'.

BTW, Jack - congrats on that trophy. Well deserved. Glad I voted for ya! :)

Wow!

My buddy Ken thought it would be cool for you guys on his favorite blog to see my pegboard; so I thought I'd check out the site. Thanks for the input everybody.

Some say it's too cluttered, while others say that I'm wasting space. One guy doesn't "like the stuff"......WTF????? What stuff -they're freakin' tools! They're GOOD tools, not the Harbor Freight Chinese **** that I see in many of the pictures on this site of manicured, sparce, and for my purposes, useless pegboards.

I've been a professional Carpenter for 25 years. I'm not a mechanic. I don't need to be told to put my tools in a toolbox (cute picture of your kid by the way rwhite692) -I've carried several for years. Before I set up this pegboard I struggled to find things when I needed them. Now everything is right at my fingertips. I still have tool boxes (7 of them for different kinds of work: framing, trim, drywall, concrete, etc..., and they're full), but when I'm working on a project at home or need something for a side job I don't have to dig through them to find what I need.

It's not cluttered and it's not a mess; unless you're a priss who thinks his garage should look like a sterile laboratory.

Oh, and hanging stuff in front of other stuff from the shelves like pots and pans is severely stupid.

I-I-I-I-I-I LIKE HIM!

For me, personally, I wouldn't put that much stuff on the pegboard, only because I wouldn't be able to find it when I need it, but more, if I have too many things off the wall at one time, I'd forget exactly where they go. Probably.

However, I have done my whole shop in pegboard, and have tools hanging everywhere. I've got a lot of tools on the walls above my tool box, above my work bench, and on the wall to the right of my bench. But I've got a good bit of open space between each. It's neat, it's organized, and I like it.
Some of them are tools that won't fit in my box (hand saws, levels, ear protection, face shield, etc), some are tools used with some of specific pieces of shop equipment, and some are fab and layout tools.

I like your lay-out, and don't worry about the wrench and box polishers.

Yup, I use them somewhat regularly.

But the very fact that they're lined up like that blows my cover. I'd say I say I'm perfectionistic but I'm not cause I'm not up to it. I can't carry it off cause I guess I'm too lazy to always put everything away like I ought to.

Welcome to GJ abomino, nothing wrong with your pegboard if it works for you. I just wouldn't that many tools out in the open for all to see or getting covered with dust/overspray.

I do have someand use it for the storage of tools on the wood side of the garage. Alot of stuff that doesn't typically fit inside a drawer with out wasting space.

Even though it's an older pic, here's mine and more has been added to it.

I use pegboard in my barn nailed to the purlins and hang barn stuff and every surface above 4' of osb screwed horizontally is covered with white peg board. I love it...it gets stuff off the floor and at eye level and not hidden away in cabinets and drawers. Just my 2 cents worth :)

...Nope.

Peg Board is what I use out in the garden shed for the small garden hand tools, the spool of trimmer line, the extra mower blade, etc.

My kid's workbench has pegboard. Even they can't stand using it, LOL:
...
Because they can't reach the back! I have little kids, too, and they don't have the reach adults do ;)

I think it looks really good. When I had a lot fewer tools, I had them on pegboard, but as my collection grew I put everything in the Craftsman box and took the pegboard down. I put plywood up and have my phone systems mounted on the wall now.

Thanks to this thread, I gof off my **** and hung a leftover 3x4 sheet over my rehabbed workbench. Yes, I put careful thought into placement and what stuff went on the pegs. I halfway thought about putting some leftover trim around it just to make it look finished.

I too have an unhealthy fetish for pegboard. I really like the convienence of having tools at hand when I'm working on a shop project. I also like the ability to quickly grab specialty tools to take with me to a jobsite.

When I started construction of my shop I picked up a big stack of the stuff from a store that was closing for 11 cents a sheet. I still have a ton left and big plans for the back room of the shop.

Here are a few pics:
WorkBench6.jpg

This is my main work area/bench

WorkBench7.jpg

Here is a close up. (You can see I am currently "arranging" some pliers but I have to wait until I can find a new supplier for those Titan hangers...)

MiterSawBench1.jpg

Here is some pegboard I mounted behind my miter saw bench.

GrinderPegboard2.jpg

I even have a few sheets of stainless a freind gave me a few years back. This is behind my bench grinders and the rest will be placed at my welding bench when I get around to building it.

Are you not worried that a spark from grinding metal would catch the saw dust on fire? I really dislike it when people play the safety police, but I was just curious. :)

"Are you not worried that a spark from grinding metal would catch the saw dust on fire? I really dislike it when people play the safety police, but I was just curious. "

No for two reasons. First a potential 'spark' has a long way to travel through a metal duct before it lands in my metal dust collection bin. With the cooling effect created by the airflow and the fact that the filings never seem to glow for that long anyhow, I'm just not worried. I did think about it though and I guess I sould probably route it to a shop vac instead just to be safe...

The other reason is that I never, ever seem to remember that I connected the things to my dust collection system in the first place and to date I have never utilized it!

I really only use it to kinda clean out the griders after the fact...

I like the setup in the OP's pics, and I like pegboard in general. I have some in my basement, but I am not poud of how it is organized. I plan to put some up in my barn, too. Part of the reason why I like my tool display boards is because they have the same functionality of pegboard while having a cool vintage aesthetic.

I'd rather have wall full of "cluttered" looking tools than waste time trying to remember which of five toolboxes or two storage drawer units I stuffed what I needed into. My brain isn't wired to remember where stuff is that I don't use all the time.

I have had rotten luck with pegboard in my shop. Seems like everytime I would go to grab a tool I found myself crawling on the floor looking for the darned hook as it would come flying off the wall with the tool..
I removed most of the pegboard and dramatically reduced the density of tools stored on them. What pegboard I have retained, I have used a dot of RTV silicone on the hook.. I have used magnetic strips once before for files and found that I turned the files into magnets which rendered them almost worthless for filing anything steel or iron as the files would not self clean anymore (loading up)...

I applaud the great effort at organization none the less!!!

Big-Foot, they sell plastic clips that hold pegboard hooks in place. I forget where I bought mine but they work pretty well.

I have only used brown pegboard. Seeing all the use of white pegboard in this thread is changing my taste a little.

I copied down a few pics from the thread so I can learn the art of organizing from the masters.;)

"What happens to the peg board order when you add another wrench to a set?"
- You get to drink a beer and reorganize your wrench set!

- Go with a decent satin latex paint. Avoid oil based paints...

Oh, come on! You guys are showing the EASY stuff to store! What about 2 ton comealongs (the cable kind) or big rolls of welding cable or a bunch of angle grinders?

to keep your Hooks and other Pegboard hangers from coming off...and yet still being able to when you reorganize...Use a Drop of clear silicone on the bottom peg before you put it up on your pegboard.
A trick that I used in my old garage on "worn" Pegboard.

Pegboard arguments seem a bit trivial to me, personally.

:dunno: I haven't seen any 'controversy' or one single 'argument' in this thread. Some pictures were posted, some gave their opinions, discussion ensued. What's wrong with that? Nothing that I can see:dunno: Don't see the point in making something that isn't there.

I can see a lot of work and thinking went into those pegboards. To this point in my life I have been to busy doing work in my shop to spend that kind of time decorating. Now that I don't HAVE to make a pile of money in my shop my personal goal is to turn that around a bit. It would be fun to try for a pretty botique shop for the first time in my life:pimp:

I love pegboard. I use it as my major wall covering. I can hang stuff anywhere I happen to need it. I have lots more room to hang tools but I hang tools I use commonly near where I use them commonly.

The open display on peg board helps you to remember what tools you have!
More than once I have seen something for sale and thought "that might come in handy" forgetting that I have one already in the back of a draw.
One day I wil get around to putting some on the wall. Do some of you bend your own clips out of stainless rod?

Here is my only current pegboard tool hanging project.
I bought a couple of pieces of (approx) 2'x3' plastic pegboard and a bag of hooks, and made a cabinet/box to hang it in:

Compared to the OP's friends setup, I am wasting a lot of space, but I'll be ok with that :)

When you guys hang large sheets of pegboard, how far apart do you space the furring strips that it's mounted to? I assume you run it all around the perimeter of the board, but then is it every 12 or 16" on center? And, do you drill through the furring strips where the pegboard holes are, so tools can be hung over the strips and it isn't just wasted space?
