Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Today must've been the National Brake Replacement holiday- I replaced the brake rotors and pads all the way around on the daily driver. Then replaced the front pads and rotors on the Honda too.

Boy do I remember weeks like that. As a kid I'd change brakes on one car, then as if by magic the brakes would start acting up the rest of the daily drivers (all 5 of them). A couple days later I'd have to fix a starter one one of them. Again the other cars would get "sick". That happened all summer. When I started buying parts for all the vehicles it wouldn't do that....

Took the front and rear racks off the littlest ATV and found a failed weld in the process. Now I need to repaint the racks and find someone to weld the frame.

Changed 8 coil packs (COPs) and fixed the leaking heater hose quick connect on the 2005 Expedition. The last 2 passenger side COPs on the back are a booger bear to get at.

Boogered up the spindle retaining nut on my South Bend lathe getting it apart. But no worries mate, found a NOS one already. Might just get this thing up and running someday....

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

One of the local Studebaker owners needed some panels made for the dash of his truck (1947 M5), he's revamping the dash gauge/radio arrangement and needed some fresh metal to work with. Here's the existing:

All_Orange_Lowr_Upr_Panel.jpg

Where the factory panel has a recess, and since he has plans for installing a couple gauges in that panel, the new will be made without the recess. The flat panel above for the DIN radio will be replaced as well, with the sides tipped for uniformity.

The old panel has seen some previous holes, for whatever reason.

Picture001.jpg

Picture004.jpg

Picture003.jpg

Where the rubber tire on top of the e-wheel does a nice job of forming a radius across a panel, the upper portion of the panel was a bit tighter than the 3" radius anvil will provide.

Picture105.jpg

Having just set up my bead roller with the skateboard wheel for tipping, I thought to use this with a beading die to form the tighter radius.

Picture005.jpg

Here's the results of "rolling" the panel

Picture008.jpg

Picture009.jpg

The panel has about an 1/8" lip around the perimeter, so the radius die was changed out to one for tipping.

Picture010.jpg

With only just over 1/8 of extra to tip the flange, this process was not that effective. Hindsight, about 1/4 left over and trimmed afterwards would have been more effective. But since the panel matched so well, lets try other persuasive devices.

Picture011.jpg

Picture012.jpg

The tipping wheel did do an adequate job of marking the crease location....

Picture013.jpg

Picture014.jpg

And the "vice anvil" and a ******* was used to fold the straight lip over to a 90....

Picture015.jpg

A different anvil was chosen for the radiused edges...

Picture018.jpg

Picture016.jpg

Picture017.jpg

And a punch used to form the 4 corner radiuses...

Picture019.jpg

Picture020.jpg

Picture022.jpg

And once complete, the comparison.........

Picture024.jpg

Picture027.jpg

Then the same process was used for the upper plate. The folded edges on this will make it match the lower panel a bit better and make it look more as an original piece...

Picture028.jpg

Picture029.jpg

Picture030.jpg

And the two together...

Picture032.jpg

For now, we are leaving the mounting holes out. It may even get some studs welded on the back side, for a clean look. But we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Finally got the '30 Chevy up and going today. Looks like the reason it wasn't moving correctly was exactly what I thought, the transmission filter had fallen out. I put a new filter in and added a spacer (perfectly sized magnet) in the bottom of the pan to hold it in place.

The bad side is I added some oil to the blower but slightly overfilled it. It spit out what didn't want out of the weep hole. Since I didn't have any engine degreaser I used what was at hand - Purple Power. It sprayed on a lot of my polished aluminum which is now ruined. I have to remove it, strip it then polish it.

Car runs great now though. First it has run this great in a long time. Add stress cracks to the right fender for battle damage since I ran it up over 105mph for a brief time. Someday whenever I repaint the car I will make sure to add a flex agent.

My cheapo but attractive Dolphin gauges I added a few months ago work great. I need to add the sending unit to the fuel tank then the fuel gauge will work too. Still happy.

Missed some glue squeeze out apparently that I didn't notice till after I took the photos. Oh well. Live and learn.

Got that finished up this weekend, cleaned the garage (finally), made a taller sacrificial fence for my Table Saw with a pocket to hold the pushsticks/combo square/pencils that I usually use, finished up my router table, and made some cheap ugly storage for my magazines.

I know material wise there's not much invested but labor has to be a killer. What's a job like that cost to do ? I'm assuming the better part of the day or all day to make those pieces.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Eric, Those two pieces were about 2-1/2 to 3 hours. I did have one more panel that was just a flat piece, cut it out and punch four holes, but didn't seem worth pictures on that one

Price wasn't too bad, I went pretty easy on him for the hours.

This was a referral from a local body shop. I do more rust repair and panel fabrications like this than painting, and always have someone looking for me to paint their 5 year old plastic car, so typically we send each other work.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Chased down a minor problem that showed up in some paintwork.....well,even if wasn't.....was long over due.

Dang air filter on compressor was beyond nasty.......so instead of chasing down a filter for a 30 yo C-man 2-stage.Snagged a Mr Gasket 4" diameter "hotrod" airfilter, with housing.

Spent about an hour Tig'n/machine'n a rectangle to round adapter.AC is a little louder....but the way I engineer'd it,its easy-peasy to just add more round tubing to relocate intake......will see how it goes?BW

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Great work Robert
Sat/ Sun. My JD garden tractor would only start when I poured gas in the carb and also the starter was troublesome, so Sat I pulled the starter and hooked the bat booster to it but it still would not turn. Took it apart and the 4 brushes were still in good shape, so I cleaned the commutator, lubed everything and reassembled the starter onto the tractor. Turned over good but still needed to add fuel so I called my buddy that had an old B/S vacuum fuel pump and installed it Sunday and after a few turns it fired up and runs great. Now to get a few years more on the 15 yr machine.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Last night after a 12.5 hour overtime shift I spent about 3 hours out in the garage going through boxes. I had to empty a storage unit a few weeks ago and had to stack a bunch of the junk in my garage. Which meant that there wasn't any room in my garage for my Camaro. So I was trying to go through and sort the trash, the keepers and the recycle enough so that I could make space for the Camaro to get back into her spot. I still have a bunch to go through. I have 4 basic piles; trash, keep, recycle, burn.

Damn, that is impressive to somebody like me with very little fab skills. ;)

Attempted to replace the rusty leaking fuel tank in my jeep Comanche but fell victim to the local national chain parts store not having some simple fuel fill hose and fuel injection rated fuel hose.
Paitently waiting for it's new fuel tank

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I had side work lined up today in the home shop.

Put CV axles (both) in 96 Suby Legacy. Also replaced from brake pads.

Diag broken wheel speed sensor in same vehicle, but owner will have to save up for the part since it is over $100 new.

Starting to get calls about AC repairs; I'm hoping for a hot summer and customers with plenty of $CASH$:rocker:

I built these (primed in pic) and painted them and the shelves that go in them. They'll get doors too, but that's tomorrow's project.

Bought a HF 44" 13 draw tool chest and went all over the home to find stuff (tools) that needed to be in it. :)
My third tool chest and had stuff all over which needed a home.
Very happy.
Maybe it will grow up and get the top box?

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Painted a couple of pieces of OSB to board up the broken windows on the old pig house that backs onto the garage. This is a temporary measure until I get around to de-rusting, fixing up and painting the recycled WWII airfield building steel windows and reglazing them as pretty much all the glass is bust. Should keep the worst of the weather out and make it more secure as its going to get used initially for storage asd I clean it out. Need to make a new doorframe and door first though.

Worked on my 64 Correct Craft inboard.

Installed a new stainless steel prop shaft and trans coupler./ Repacked the shaft log, re-sealed thru hull bolts. Installed a new cutless bearing in strut and a re-pitched prop.

"Come on" summer!!!
