Ran the #6 in the conduit and installed the plug for my welders, watched all the kids play basketball that were here for thanksgiving. Great day off.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Put up the last of my lighting fixtures, which got it up and out of the way, as well as giving me more light.

Put some receptacles in the ceiling for the light fixtures.

Cleaned and organized.

Painted the pusher handle bars for my Billygoat lawn vac that I spent part of yesterday welding. Didn't dry very fast as it's 66 here today. Hope they dry by tomorrow....

Got some stuff ready for ebay.

All in all, one of the more productive days for me in a long time.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Woke up planning to winterize my mower and sharpen the blades, of course "plans" always change. Got a call from my sister-in-law that her hot water heater had rusted through and was leaking all over her garage. Went and replaced her hot water heater, also converted from gas to electric because a 90degree bend gas heater was outrageously expensive.

Went home and started working on the mower, looked over by the door...and sure enough....small water leak out the bottom of MY hot water heater. Went and bought a new one, guess I'll take mine out and put the new one in tomorrow. The mower will have to wait.

What are these cylinders made of that they rust?
In NZ we make them out of copper. No rust.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Finished up painting the ceiling in the garage, need to touch up a few places on the walls, and order some trim for up at the top of the wall today. I did get my new TV mounted though, the very last thing last night. I need to mount two cabinets and make a new line for my air compressor today AFTER I mow the lawn for the last time this year to clean it up. I'll post some pics later of the garage.

Even with the black ceiling and maroon walls, I was actually surprised after I got my lights back up as to how bright it still is in there. I figured all the light would be absorbed but surprisingly it wasn't.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

So Friday a sale shows up on kijiji (craigslist is barely used here) for 6-drawer tool boxes. There were about 20 of them. These were from the University of Alberta dental dept. I get there and all the red craftsman ones were gone.
All they had left were "Mauve" painted cabinets with a big stainless bar riveted on the front for locking with a padlock.
they weren't pretty but I could picture them from one end of my workbench to the other, rows and rows of drawers. I was planning on painting all my mismatched cabinets one color anyway so the color didn't bother me. So I buy the last five and take them home at $50 bucks each I thought this is cheaper than trying to make drawers to fill the gap between the existing lateral file cabinets and the countertop.
I get them home and after I unload them I realize after I measure them all up that the work involved to replace what I have done so far would just set me back in my effort to clean up the garage (forgot to mention this pushed the wife's truck outside again)
So I snap 3 pictures, put up an ad on kijiji for $65 each and in less than 5 minutes get my first email reply then right after a phone call.

Long story short. I sell three by 9pm and then get a text at 11pm that if I hold them for a guy and let him come right away he will give me $100 each for the last two.
Did a quick google on his # and he is a local car nut so i tell him no problem come on down. He must have stayed at least 1/2 hour to discuss his garage transformation and his car projects. Also he has access to waterjets and so forth. I think he will be joining GJ real soon.

$145 profit in a few hours wasn't bad. I wish I bought all 20 of the toolboxes though. Between 6:30pm and the next day I had over 12 more hits on the ad with people ready to come down and buy these old cabinets.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

So Saturday I get a few hours and I start making the drawers that I wanted to make all along.
I had a them in mind to match the tool cabinet that I made weeks ago.
I don't have the countertops cladded yet (this week for sure) and I will get the kids to start painting the rest of the cabinets soon.
The gap I have to fill is 7" so I split the gap in two allowing for some clearance.
I used 3/4 inch wood sides and 1/2 inch ply bottoms, a bit of mill finish aluminum and lots of rivets, some leftover drawer pulls from a kitchen reno, and full extension drawer slides.
By late Sunday night I had 4 done. I lined them all with a really high end floor underlay which I had laying around and put away a few tools.
I couldn't find the socket holders I wanted since the depth of the drawers is slightly less than 3" so I quickly fabbed some up out of the same aluminum I used for the face.
Tonight I will continue sorting tools and the "mauve" cabinets should be leaving by this afternoon. I have 4 more drawer to make but they can wait.
Have a great Monday guys!

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Thanks Fergus. I will be uploading a few more pictures in a bit.
I have a small 4' metal brake at home and like the cabinet I built first, the frame and drawer is completely wood and plywood.
I made a drawer 1" smaller than the sides to allow for the drawer slides.
then I added a 1/2" plywood piece same height as the drawer but 7/8" wider to hide the slides.
then on the brake (or even with hand benders) I made small caps for the sides (I loosened the drawer front and sandwiched the aluminum on the back side, and put 1 screw thru the front to hold this edge cap as I prepared the front wrap)
on the brake I made an oversize flashing in the shape of a letter G and after notching it for the top drawer sides, and cutting it slightly oversize, I hooke it over the top and screwed it from the bottom.
The nice thing about this thin aluminum is it files really easy but it also hammers well to round out the corners.
One of my guys at work could have probably made this in one piece and also the drawers could have been made from one piece of steel but I didnt want to ask as we are extremely busy.
Cheers
Gio

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Here's what I did last night.
Cladded my work top and the shelf over the filing cabinets.
Also reorganized my sockets and ratchets.
I think I will try painting the hammer finish paint on the cabinets tonight.
Cheers

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Got tired of leaving stuff on the little shelf space where my top toolbox rests on the lower. Always in the way to open the drawer and not enough room to be useful.

So, some 1x3, plywood, and a set of drawer slides and I now have a decent size pullout shelf to use for sorting, staging, whatever. Covered with indoor/outdoor carpet and put an aluminum lip on the front and back to keep things from rolling off.

Jim
The cabinets are made by goliath manufacturing in murrieta calif.
The one pictured is a prep cart for getting a car ready to paint.
It is a one piece unit that holds different grits of sand paper all the sanding tools, masking paper, and spray cans needed to take a car from the body man to the paint booth ready to paint.
I found them at the sema show in las vegas last week. (couldn't resist buying them)

Very nice idea. I agree that little space is just big enough to be a pain. Did you use special drawer slides or just whatever was on the shelf?

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Been wanting to clean up the garage, but have to finish painting trim. Once I have that done, then I can get it in order and start in on the other side.

It seems like the more I try to get done, the faster backwards I go.

Cleanup *****.
I thought I would finish painting the rest of my cabinets last night.
3 hours later I just finished cleaning with goof off and thinner. No painting.
Should be painted by tonite.

Put a few more hours into cleaning/organizing the garage.

Lowes is offering totes buy one get one today and possibly through the weekend. I'm going to pick up 30 or so. Did that about 4 years ago and have finally run out.

The tote idea is great. When we moved a few years ago we would buy some every time we went to Wally world. We must have ended up buying 150 or more. But they really did make things easier. And now they come in handy all to often.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I use Ebay as a research tool.

Theres a German tablesaw thats taken up residence here at the shop. It's been an ongoing project.Have been researching(lots of you-tube and Ebay) blade guards. Will spare all the details....but have really been hitting the "industrial design" aspects pretty durn hard on this.Lots of drawings in the evenings.

So,after all the day to day BS(payin gigs),this afternoon....mocked up a cardbd/wood/hot glue version. It's almost perfect..........will let it gell for a day or so,then go ahead and send it to fabrication.

Its the blade guard/dust pick-up that you/I would design if money and fabrication capability's were out of the equation.Sort of,the end-all-be-all.

Its kind of neat......because of holiday's theres a bunch of folks here party'ing tonight. They get to see all the conceptual drawings...then go look at the mock-up.
