Just sold my box - Suggestions for new one

First post. Long time lurker.

I just sold my Craftsman 26 inch top and bottom. I have needed more space for a while. It sold much quicker than I was expecting so I am without a place to put my tools. I would like my next box to be my last box. I am not a professional and the box will live in my 2 car garage. I am wanting something in the 50 to 56 inch range and am thinking just a bottom cabinet. I am also wanting to stay with a new box. I don't really want to look at Craigslist everyday. I have looked at the offerings from strictlytoolboxes.com, SnapOn and what Sears has these days. I have also looked at what several of you have purchased via the show me your toolbox thread.

The local SnapOn guy has a KRA2422POT he would sell for about $500 off list ($4,300). This box is exactly what I want but is a little over my budget. The stuff from Sears just really isn't that appealing to me. The drawers seem to be setup wrong and they don't have enough wide drawers. Some of the offerings at strictlytoolboxes.com look good but I am always concerned with the gauge of steel and how the drawers close (I am use to the Griplatch from my Craftsman).

Given the above information and a budget of up to $3k what would you recommend? Keep in mind I would like to stick with new.

My 2 cents:
For what you are doing, I'd suggest just waiting for something good to pop up for sale used. Could be any good name, unless you really just WANT a Snap-On. Even so, if you have 3000 in cash to invest, you can buy something really good. You just have to be patient and hold out for it.

It doesn't have to be new. That would just be easier. I also don't want anything that is beat up. I am also really partial to black. There have been a couple of lightly used boxes pop up but they have been colors I don't care for.

Charles, don't know where you are located but if you are anywhere near the Baltimore area, I have 8 large boxes that may fill you needs at a price you can live with. Snap on, Mac, Matco all in stock at prices less then CL dreamers and the trucks, but not quite you **** deals either. My 2nd business is buying and reselling tools and boxes at my store, not online. Pm me if you are interested.

I have never been to a Harbor Freight. Based on what I have read on this forum I am going to visit one this weekend to check out these boxes.

The 78 id assume is the 4300.00 box you mentioned. Very good box.

As others have said, for someone more budget conscious looking for good storage, the U.S General boxes are definitely worth getting.

If you're partial to black, just buy two bottom roller 41" Viper boxes, I bought two 26" and two 41" and the quality on these is fantastic and they are price right. mine are white.

41" 9 Drawer

I think a side box can be added if you just wanted the 41" and a small side cabinet attached.

I don't see paying $2,600 for a well used box, I like new which is why I got tired of looking at crappy pics of boxes that looked to be not well taken care of, too many high end toolbox owners are slobs which I don't get.

http://www.sears.com/viper-tool-sto...0902932000P?prdNo=13&blockNo=13&blockType=G13

82" of BRAND NEW storage for $607 x 2 =$1,214 + tax w/ Free pick up at your local Sears.

The top drawer doesn't look like it is 4 inches deep. Where do you put your sockets?

Rock, was that directed at me? I can assure you that the box pictured is in excellent condition. Not new, but certainly not well used. The pic ***** I admit, but it is an 8 out of 10. If you don't believe me, I will pay your tolls and gas to drive to Maryland to check it out. I will hand you cash before you walk through the door.

I've always had my sockets laying down in a magnetic tray such as the pic below so tall wide cabinets weren't important to me. he nice thing about the tray is you can carry it to where you're working on your car..etc in case you're not sure of the size. Try doing that with the stand up trays, yeah they look cool but.

Not really, just a general blanket statement I made out of frustration of looking in CL for so long and seeing beat up boxes that owners didn't take care of at all. Let's face it, they're so $ they're an investment. I figured that was a find, and not your personal box. I thought the bet was you'd pay for my tools because I was ready to take a drive out, Because IMO a 10/10 is brand new and a 9/10 is barely used, so not sure about the 8/10 claim. :D

:D

Well I already have a couple hundred $ in Ernst rails and I am very happy with them. I have to get something with a top drawer at least 4 inches.

Rock, it is not my personal box. I buy and resell tools and boxes. I know the market quite well. I am not a dreamer on prices but you won't get a you **** deal from me either. Its how I make about a third of my living. I spend a lot of time chasing down deals so my customers don't have to. If you want to buy a box at the prices I pay, it is simple, devote about 25 hours a week to CL, auctionzip.com and going to auctions and sending out emails. Not to mention at least $100 on fuel. It isn't hard, it's just time consuming and takes devotion. Oh, have a pocket full of cash at all times too. I have probably had 50 members of tool forums come through my doors and most gladly come back. Yes I make money off selling tools, just like you make money off what you do for a living. We all have to eat and if you work hard you should get to eat well.

Price at $2800 is still a bit high. If it were in my shop, $2000 max and probably $1800. Used boxes, even ones that are barely used and relatively new won't bring more then 50% of retail and more like 40%. I know this is hard for the sellers to hear but it is what they tend to bring. Remember, once a year, the SO man will come buy with a truck full of boxes that will sell new at about 50% off.

I think I'd go check out the Harbor Freight cabinets first, then you can decide for yourself. You're going to be able to look, feel and touch the Snap On box, you should do the same with the US General. The Snap On box might be better built, but is it worth a $2,100 difference. I don't think you'll have a fair comparison unless you see it for yourself. To some people having the Snap On box is worth the cost, you'll just have to decide if it's worth it to you.

Opinions on the $2,800 price? This would leave me plenty of room to grow into.
Why settle? You really want a black box, no?

That does seem high for a used classic 78.

Can't hurt to rule out all options.

Missed your post, sorry about that. Well that's cool, that is dedication, do you do the same for tools or just boxes?

If you get a box that is 50" to 56" wide, get one that is 24" to 30" deep.... A toolbox box 18" deep pales beside a toolbox close to 30" deep.. Your Craftsman Griplatch box was 18" deep, so I am sure you will appreciate the extra drawer depth... I do agree with you on the Griplatch feature, I have two matching black sets of those 26" boxes that I bought new about ten years ago... That is a nice feature, but lets face it; the Griplatch cabinets roll easy, the slides work good and they are nice looking boxes,,,however,,,, the Griplatch could have been built a heck of allot sturdier, along with the entire cabinet....but then, they would have sold for a much higher price... I value my SnapOn boxes that have; My 32" wide KRA is 20" deep. Even those drawers, when compaired to My

I agree with you about the depth. I really want something at least 24 inches deep. And yes, the griplatch could have been made sturdier.

To each his own I guess...I'd rather have width over depth, pulling a drawer out that far (30") seems like it would be a pain to me, plus I like to arrange my drawer (horizintally) left to right, not (vertically) front to back.:dunno:

Thanks for the replies. I went to Harbor Freight this morning and looked at their offerings. The 44 inch is tempting for $399 but I decided against it. I caught up with the Snap On truck and made a deal for a brand new KRL722. Exceeded my budget of $3k but I am happy with it. Searching this forum I paid a couple hundred more than some of you did for your 722's but I paid significantly under the list price and had the thing delivered to my house today. Also got the Snap On guy to fix one of my F80's that wasn't acting right.

I'll get some pictures later tonight after I get my tools put away.

722 is a great box. I liked both of mine a lot until I got my 7022, now I'm not sure I could own a box shallower than 30"

I haven't had time to get the tools all moved over. I barely have enough tools to fill half this box though.

Just curious why it is "stretchy" for a non-pro to buy a Snap On box?
