Mystery Vise bought at an estate sale today. Is it U.S.A made or does it look like something made in China / Japan. pictures all included. Seems pretty stout to me.

Initial impression is that it's import. I have never seen a USA made vise not stamped/cast USA somewhere on it. It also doesn't look very old so that kinda rules out the obscure stuff that might not be marked. Just an opinion though.

import vise, good for whaling on and not having to worry about damaging a good vise.

I would go with import too. It is too new to not be stamped USA if it were made here. What initially caught my eye though was the orange tag. I don't know if that was the tag for the estate sale or not, but Harbor Freight used to use orange tags in their stores. The castings seem pretty smooth for China, maybe from Taiwan? Could be a decent vise.

There are at least half a dozen threads on Garage Journal asking similar questions about vises that use that same design. Short answer; the vise is probably imported, and if so may be made with poor quality castings. Long answer; there are/were high quality versions of that style of vise, one is a Ductile iron version that's imported and sold by Yost. There are also some that appear very well made, that may be older, and which some people on Garage Journal believe may have been the USA made "original" design that the asian made vises copied. Nobody has so far confirmed there was a USA made original though. This is a past thread on that style vise. It links to a number of other Garage Journal threads on them. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=193560

It's an Chiawanese, but I'll tell you what: I came across the same one and mounted it outside on my big metal table. I absolutely love that thing. It is super handy and I do beat on it, wail on it (responsibly if there is such a thing), weld stuff with it, paint stuff with it...probably my most used vise. If it breaks, no big deal. I wish that a good USA company would/did make a kick *** version of this.

I have a growing number of bad *** USA vises, but once restored, I never want to mess them up or bust them. It's a vicious cycle.:lol_hitti

They have been made outside of the USA for quite a while. My grandpa brought one over that he go from a foundry 40 years ago and thought it was the coolest thing ever until I told him that was probably Chinese

Some of the vises of that type are labeled FIRST JEFFERSON TOOL INL. 120 Multipurpose Vise. This post mentions Ohio in connection with it. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=982315&postcount=12 This is the thread, http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=69180 I tried a trademark search but didn't find anything. There may have been a USA made version of it. Probably the better current version is the ductile iron Yost
750-DI. http://www.yostvises.com/specialty-...bination-pipe-and-bench-vise-swivel-base.html The vise is not USA made, but supposedly is heavy duty. You have to be careful though because Yost also offers a regular grey iron version.

If i see them for maybe 30 bucks or less, I will pick them up just to mount on trailers, tractors etc.

They are the only vises I have that I don't care if they sit out in the weather and get some rust and dust on them. FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION on these for sure.

Damng..those Yost are nice!

Here's an older USA made one I have , but no pipe jaws on the bottom. It's sitting in my living room under the tv now :lol_hitti

I have one and use it as my "outside" vice too. I bought it in the late 80's and it's been great. It's very good for heavy duty disassembly (i.e. beating on things) and for welding as it spins, twirls and just keeps on going.

Thank you for the picture of the Fred C. Moran vise. I hadn't come across that yet. That may be the ancestor of the design. It looks like it may have also been sold under the FLEXIVISE Company of Los Angeles California, at least according to this post. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=177475 This appears to be the patent on the Fred C. Moran/Flexivise. http://www.google.com/patents?id=OV...=gbs_selected_pages&cad=1#v=onepage&q&f=false

It's likely this style was copied from the British Swindens vice, their design dating back to the early 1930's. Swindens Vices
They come up for sale used every now and then and always seem to attract very strong money - £250 and over for the larger versions - the reason why I don't have one :)
Amongst others, Our REME boys use these mounted on the front of their Challenger recovery tanks.

Thank You Van Steele, The Swindens vise/vise must be the example the Asian vise companies copied. Nice to know there's still a quality British version still available.

The one made in the USA was first made by the Fulton Machine and Vise Co. of N.Y. Later it was sold as the ATLAS NUTYP VISE made by Atlas Vise Co. of N.Y. See below information previously posted in GJ about this vise. So maybe this is the one copied by the chinese and not the Swindens?:headscrat

The Fulton/Atlas Nutyp vises lack the split static jaw that the Swidens vises and the older Parker 474 vises have. Since the current Asian vises also lack that feature your probably correct. I found this past post on The VISES of Garage Journal http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2443305&postcount=4921 that gives a bit of history on the Fulton/Atlas Nutyp vise. It says the vises were made for the American and French governments. I wonder if some manufacturer acquired an old one left behind in some place like Shanghai.:headscrat
