Went to a hamfest today. $4 for the Craftsman flex head ratchet and a set of no-name Taiwan sockets.

Hi neighbor! great score, I think I will be sick now

Today from 8am to 1pm I went to 3 estate sales, plus a few hard sales along the way. I've been looking for a Kennedy Machinist chest for a while and spotted it in the list. Arrived 45mins before sale started, and was first in line. Chest was marked $40, and tools inside were marked $10-$30 each. Total came to about $190, but several of the tools weren't needed, so I pulled them out and got the chest and contents for $70. Wilton vice (my first) was another $10. Delta 4in Jointer was another $32 (they were asking $45, I offered $30 and we settled on $32). The other odds and ends were another $5, including some mandrels, dental tools, and some gauges.

Here is the haul from the first sale. There are two Starrett pin vices, some gauge blocks, starrett divider, and lots more I still have to dig through.

Next sale had nearly no tools, but I did find two commercial grade hoses on the back porch. $5 for both.

Last sale was a commercial landscaper estate sale. Lots of made in korea, taiwan, china and japan tools, but I dug around and found these. 600N wireless router, leather stamping kit, palm ratchet (I've been looking for one) etc. Total for this was $20.

Good score on all that machinist stuff and love the jointer!

^^^Some nice finds guys!!

Here's my weekend run:

From the $1 per item pile: (Klein, CM SO)

From the $2 per item pile:

july20gsale%20004.jpg

Now the $5 per item pile (the SK set looks NOS from the Dresser era)

This was all from Free piles (including Gloveoleum):

Only $.50 per set. (punch set from China). English ruler was also $.50.

This was $13:

This is a Jacobs #6a chuck made in Hartford. It has some surface rust but the jaws looks perfect.

I couldn't help but pick up this obnoxiously large 1-7/8" Wright combo wrench. (about 28" long) At $35 it wasn't cheap.

You did well!! $1 and $2 items, FREE items... not much free around here, they charge for chems and all...Let me know if you want to trade that Craftsman grinder for anything, I have the matching DA and Sander.

This weekend wasn't a total lost cause what with majority of the garage sales with kids clothes and toys. I need to buy stock in that **** :lol_hitti

From an reasonably priced professional Estate Sale,

Mitutoyo Gage Block set, Cornwell combo wrench and Padlock saying Kodak Safety which looks to have been used for lock-out/tag-out - $11

And though not from a garage/estate sale but picked up during my garage saling travels from a Craigslist ad,

Wright 1/2" drive SAE deep socket set, never used. Also a Craftsman stainless steel combo wrench. First one of those that I have seen in my travels. - $12

More machinist stuff, you guys are scoring big!! You should ask the owners if they have more of those Stainless wrenches, they pull a pretty penny on ebay.

Stopped at 7 sales yesterday and bought 3 piles of stuff:
- Weller soldering kit $5
- Gerber knife (needed), Klein 7290 cutters stamped SWBT, staple gun $12
- 8 USA clamps, heavy lamp with magnifying lens, right-angle surveying prism, X-Acto tweezers with stand, 225 piece O-ring kit (unopened), Craftsman USA 16' taper measure $14

Sharp looking knife, pun intended ;) Like those Craftsman clamps too!!

This is a JH Williams 12" CC-412 *********** C-Clamp, acquired for $10, and I plan to work it until it falls apart. =)

I know it's a sin to repaint something :)rolleyes:), but this thing was off-the-charts rusty and frozen/seized. I fixed the seized issue, deburred a tiny bit on one thread with a very light filing (really not necessary, but...), blasted and repainted. I'll wirewheel brush the threads, remove the overspray and re-oil once the paint has cured (which may be never in this humidity).

attachment.php

P.S. Framed is a 3" US-made C-clamp for reference...

I paint my working newish clamps all the time. I don't have the energy to keep wire-wheeling them to deep the rust off the forgings...

I haven't been to a garage sale in a while, but I was driving by two of them today so I stopped in. I spent a total of $20 for what you see in the pictures.

Ridgid 1/4" and 3/8" manual threader dies with good teeth (don't let the dirt on them fool you)- $10 for both.

impact driver- $5. Vessel brand, made in Japan

slide hammer- $5. Does anyone know what brand it is? It says made in USA and #248 in several places including on the sliding weight, but that's all I can find.

Bosch 11224VSR rotary hammer- FREE:shocking:

The rotary hammer I found in a pile that they said was going to metal scrap, so I asked what was wrong with it and they just said it was broken. I looked it over and everything seemed okay, so I figured it probably just needed new brushes. When I went to pay for the other stuff I asked if I could have it to try and see if I could get it working again and they said yes.

I took it home and opened it up and it does just need new brushes. If I temporarily modify the existing brushes it works just fine. They are just a little bit too short as is for the spring to give them enough pressure on the armature for it to run consistently. I did a test hole in some concrete to verify proper operation, so when all is said and done I will have a nice rotary hammer for the price of some $8 brushes.:bounce:

Stop 1. "Estate sale for guys". Unlike most 7 am sales, this one was swarming with people at 5 after 7... I saw guys walking around with Cman socket sets, ratchets, etc, and watched someone right in front of me grab a 1960s/70s gray and red Craftsman 6-drawer top chest for $20... It took some digging to find gold in the leftovers:

C-man 3/8" speeder, 4 =v= extensions, 3/8 =v= sliding t-handle, 2 Cman 1/4" drive extensions, 2 Cman 5/16" wrench (one with the notch in the open end for the ratcheting gimmick), Indestro Super DBE, Crescent 8" and Williams 6" adjustables, Cal USA panel remover, Vaco screwdriver, Crescent pliers. Oh, and the Sears cord reel trouble light. Been needing one of these... I can't seem to keep drop lights alive very long. I gather the hot tip is a heavy-duty CFL in this?

Stop 2. I hemmed and hawed about this one for a while, then decided it would be the best use of the 7:30-9:00 time between sales. Old guy having a "moving sale." Lots of old, old stuff. Wandered into the shed and picked out the stuff below. I spotted a cheap roller and hand box in the corner, and discovered they were stuffed with SO, Armstrong, Proto, etc. Unfortunately, they would be going to auction. Spoke with him for a while and he talked about putting 40 years in at Mercury Marine. Anyway, the tools I did get:

Crescent Crestalloy cutters, "Motor Shop" pliers (clearly Diamond), no-name and Zim valve spring compressors, Herbrand terminal lifter, Wizard brake pliers, Artisan 8" adjustable, Crescent offset DBE, and a handful of sockets and adapters. At top are SO, with a MAC 1/2" universal, one Proto, one Plomb, a few Armstrong, one Powr-Kraft, and one SK.

Stop 3. Barn sale I recognized from the year before.

"Manual of Spring Engineering" was too cool to pass up. So was the old-school Hotchkiss stapler. At bottom is a Snap-On 3/4" drive ratchet head with 24" handle. I think it would work ok after lubing, if not for the missing tooth on the gear. Are rebuild kits still available through SO for these?

Wow, you guys are doing some great picking this weekend! Kudos to all!

Flat, glad to see you back in the fray!

In answer to your question the drop light; Yes! a CFL is much more durable than an incandescent. Not indestructible, but better...

OK My turn. I think I did OK today, this will be a two poster! :D

A couple of Block sales, one was a big annual one I try not to miss as it has about 20-30 streets involved, a whole neighborhood.

Also a couple of Estate sales. I tried to get back to one that I had left a 2 HP antique motor at to see if the price came down, and could not remember which stop it was...:willy_nil

Ah well probably for the best, this thing was HUGE, at least a 1" shaft, brushes, and worldly heavy...

First stop, 2 Leather Pouches, a nice Mini mag-light set, (never used?) and some new buckskin gloves. $10

attachment.php

The Mag light set:
attachment.php

At a house two doors down, a Dremel for $5:

attachment.php

Out of a "junk box" at a target of opportunity, A cam clamp, Crescent, wire/cable cutter, a small pair of odd, french made pliers; seem to be good quality and cleaned up beautifully. 2 old 1/4" drivers, and a clamp vise with 1-3/4" jaws.

attachment.php

More from the junk box; a 15/32 drill bit and carbide tipped drill bit, a "pull through" knife and scissors sharpener, a chuck key, and an Armstrong Center punch. $5 all

attachment.php

At another house in the big block sale, a Mini Bike frame for $5 This one is sprung in the rear, so its a cut above.

attachment.php

A buck for an ocean or boat pole grip/handle

Second half:

One of the estate sales (one I was at last week too) had another GAM hammer/screwdriver set, 2 smaller soldering coppers, an Armstrong Hex socket, 10' Lufkin tape, (virtually unused), Scher, Tumico SS 6" scale, and a Twist key style latch. I have a number of boxes that use these and regularly find them so now I have one for repairs if needed...

attachment.php

I went back out to re-visit a couple of places that looked like they had more coming out, and to look for that damn motor, and one estate sale that wasn't open when I came by in the am had just closed, but let me root through the garage anyway. too bad the weren't open when I swung by the first time based on the leavings...

SK Pro box, 4 SW sockets, Plvmb and Proto sockets, 2 long C Craftsman, and a Duro and Walden sockets (the stepped ones) that were covered in gunge but seemed worth getting.

attachment.php

And some Valve Grind tools and compound

attachment.php

And probably my most significant find, was a go-back, this is a Steel Case card file, 13" wide, 28-1/2 deep and 52 high. Drawers are all roller and I don't need to tell you all how heavy duty these guys are!

the drawers measure 10-1/4 X 27-1/2 deep so each is 282 square inches.

Times eight and this thing has 2255 square inches.

They are 4-5/8 deep, so the thing has 10,429 cubic inches!

You guys are so lucky, seems like I have to move. Went to 10 local sales this morning, a few of them explicitly marked 'tools, tools, tools', but I ended up with absolutely nothing. All of it was junk and it was priced high.

Then again, I just witnessed a woman negotiating prices on a 50 cent item. :wtf:

I have to agree! Yes, there are some things that should remain original condition, but I think a good cleaning and a fresh coat of paint go a long way on other tools. I'm re-finishing my PARK tool box I bought this weekend and I had to really think about changing the original hammered green paint. 15 minutes in the spray paint aisle at Lowes changed my mind. After all . . . they are tools and I want my tools to look good. "Patina" - code for rusty - is OK if that's what you like, but I prefer a nice, clean look on tools I'm going to use.

Not a bad couple garage sale days for me.

Got a whole bucket of American made files, most with handles, for $5.

Unfortunately I overpaid a bit for the bin of screwdrivers. Most are American made (lying down), with only a few Chinese (propped up). I got those plus the Starrett hacksaw frame for $22. Still learning the ins and outs of garage sale dealing.

The taps and dies were obtained for $10. Again, mostly American stuff.

And, the one I'm happiest with, the machinist's toolbox for a cool $20. I'm not sure of the manufacturer, as I couldn't find a label anywhere. But it's steel, in great shape, and just needs a little cleanup.

Of course my basset hound Patton had to scope everything out and make sure it meets his exacting standards.

wow all of you guys got some great scores today! Looks like it was mostly a socket day for most of you... I ended up having a screwdriver day! Yard Sale #1...

Go up to the guy, asked him how much he wanted per screwdriver, and he just goes "how bout $10 for the whole box?"
Well, sure!

Other than the Yankee and a Upland I spotted in it, didn't know what I was getting til I just got home with it (worked 10-9 at the real job...)
4 North Bro's, a Bonney, the Upland, a Blue Point Nut Driver, Rosco's, older Craftsman Vandium drivers, couple Stanley's, a Bridgeport, and a bunch of others... only a handful of imports, but a lot of no name older wooden handled guys... 72 in total!

Oh, and Jeff.... How rare are these?

However, hopefully I didn't let something awesome slide... Couldn't just get it and bring it home, the misses would kill me and planned to hit 3 other sales advertising tools with not much time to spare to hit a mac machine... E-mailed him to see if it sold today, hopefully he didn't and it comes home this week.

$50 + my drool all over it.... I need to have this, hopefully no one wanted it and its still a few miles from my house.

But then, hit 5 more yard sales, two more planned advertising tools... zilch.

Then hit the old faithful flea market across the street from my work and had a few snags...

WarrenP, Great score on those files, you'll get better with the screwdrivers once you go to a few more sales and start seeing them everywhere. :lol_hitti That looks like a Kennedy 520 box, real nice

Damn Rick, hope they still have the drill press, I would have been putting a deposit on it at least to hold til the woman wasn't there with me

I got excited for a second, but I don't think it's a Kennedy 520. The knob on the drawer cover panel is round, whereas on the 520 it's rectangular.

I'm thinking it's not a Kennedy, since there's no label and no evidence of one having been present.

I'm pretty sure Kennedy had round knob pulls for a period. The logo is written on the underside of the lid in "water transfer" I think and it wears off easily. Outlaw will know more.

Man it would be sweet if it was a Kennedy. Trying not to get my hopes up too soon.

It is a really nice toolbox regardless.

That toolbox looks exactly like my S-K box except for the color. Mine is green, but still that crinkle finish. Does yours have a door that slides out and pivots up to cover the drawers? Mine should, but it's missing. Oh, well. Mine was free.:bounce:

Yep, mine has the slide out door. I don't have a key for the lock though, so it's not likely to get much use. This toolbox will be used in a stationary role anyway.

Warren , I think the 520 style box you have is a Union box. I made a connection a day or three ago in one of the other threads. Both Waterloo and Union had round button type drawer pulls, but the Union appears to be a bit larger in diameter, and not quite so "tall" as the Waterloo, based on comparing what my Waterloo looks like, and pics I've seen of the Union and Warrens.

I have a Waterloo, but no Union (yet...). I also have older Kennedy's going back to the thirties, and no round drawer pulls, they still had the rectangular ones back then.

Mind you it's possible the big K made some on contract, but I think the examples of both Union and Waterloo knocking off the drawer layouts and the cover panel is a more likely explanations for other contract 520 style boxes for Craftsman, MW and the like..

Are there any makers marks on the latches? that could give a hint, even if its a commodity buy on the box.

9four, no roiund knobs on Kennedy 520's that i recall ever seeing. They moved the logos around over the decades and also had different logos as well. I'm not sure when Kennedy finally started with the script silkscreened "Kennedy", and if we knew that it would help date stamp the critters. Kennedy seems to be becoming more communicative, maybe we can sweet talk them into getting a chronology published? :dunno:

Nice scores !

Hit a farm auction today and sweated.
Must have been 12 rack wagons. All of 'em full.
There was even more stuff lined up IN the machine shed outside the machine shed and damn near everwhere else.
I really had to pick my battles and missed out on lots of cool stuff.
There was so much stuff they were selling BIG groups of items and I just couldn't nickle and dime myself on stuff.
Saw things I've never seen before.
Most notably were two small metal "parts bins" not much bigger than file card holders and one was a Waterloo brand.

94 you would have gone nuts trying to keep up with all the "things to put things in"!

So here's some photos just to tease until I get some time to get better shots.
Spent
5 on the Wisconsin motor. Its sitting on the upside down welding table that had the vise , that was 15 bucks.
Bottom cab that's missing the bottom door had a little "something" on top that you can see a little of and there were a few tools in the cab. That was $12.50
The grease pump was a buck.
Somewhere in the truck is a small vintage fan. $1
The frame with original seat and some of the motor , too much. I wasn't leaving without it.
50 bucks.
The road flares I don't think have ever been out of the case they were in a flat for $4 if I remember right.
The ball pein I bought from another buyer for 2 bucks and its a Craftsman and 2oz maybe. Could of spent a hellava lot more its a good thing I didn't have a bigger truck!

Neat stuff, Amity! Looks like one of those auctions I often talk about...meaning that I walk away from sales where prices are going too high, but hang in there aggressively when stuff is going for cheap. Good for you!

The 127 Yard Sale is almost here. Who is going? I've got my reservations at various motels, and I am emptying every nook and cranny from my pickup, to make room. LOL.

Hey Lump ! Thanks !
Overall prices were very low , especially on the size of some lots that were thrown together to keep things moving.

Outlaw !
The vise was attached to the welding table for 15 bucks (or 12.50 can't remember).
Its a Morgan 35. For no bigger than it is , its heavy !

And probably my most significant find, was a go-back, this is a Steel Case card file, 13" wide, 28-1/2 deep and 52 high. Drawers are all roller and I don't need to tell you all how heavy duty these guys are!

As always very nice haul outlaw.  Mind if I ask what that cabinet set you back? That looks like a super handy, small spot size cabinet. May want bolt it down to make sure it doesn't tip over at only 13" wide. I would hate to see anything happen to you or your finds.

You guys are so lucky, seems like I have to move. Went to 10 local sales this morning, a few of them explicitly marked 'tools, tools, tools', but I ended up with absolutely nothing. All of it was junk and it was priced high.

Now this sounds VERY familiar. :( I feel your pain man.

Then again, I just witnessed a woman negotiating prices on a 50 cent item. :wtf:

Funny (kinda) I just discussed this in another thread. Amazing stuff isn't it? :headshake Out of curiosity, what was the item in question?
