Davefr- you **** for that drill motor and die grinder! OMFG!!11! <as the cool kids say...

Great score on the Dynabrade. In the scene shop where I used to work, we had a whole shelf of the similar Makita 1" sanders and we used the heck out of them for carving, and for cleaning up metalwork.

I managed $1 for a bag of chargers and power cords at the only garage sale I found today. It includes an in car charger for a Streamlight flashlight, so that one will go up on ebay.

I hit 4 estate sales and spent less than $25 total (including housewares.) Best deal was a gallon of Kilz2 and a gallon of interior white latex paint for --- 25c each. Got an interesting metal level that needs tlc but has good vials, 25c. (Level is marked "Port Austin Level and Tool Mfg Co, Port Austin, Michigan"). Some grinding disks, 25c each, some polishing pads, 25c each, and some household cleaners for cheap. Almost forgot the weller replacement tips, and solders, Neetsfoot Oil, and pressure/vacuum gauge. Oh and the AEG electric screwdriver (missing charger.) Everything in the group shot plus the paint was $5, so 25c each :)

I also got the part shown, it looks like part of a 3/4" breaker bar, marked Britools, British Made.

Not tools, but in the interest of answering the ongoing question of "why do you guys spend your time doing this" I also got a USA made souffle' dish, $170 new, for $10 and a couple of bottles of cleaners for 25c each instead of $3-6. (not shown) (contributes to domestic harmony.)

Super hot, with rain threatening may have kept the sales down last week and this, but that doesn't explain the poor showing at the estate sales. I guess it is just one of those doldrum periods....

Good hunting guys!

Only able to make one stop today. It advertised "unusual tools" and fishing gear. He said by the time I got there people had taken most of the fishing stuff but no one showed interested in the tools. I was able to pick up everything in the pictures for $40.

Holy ****! All nice stuff, esp the 1/4" dr Snap on set. SWEET!

It's getting slim pickins. I think people that wanted to have a G-sale this summer have already done it.

The drill was $3.50 and the die grinder was $5:

P1020046.jpg

The screwdrivers were $.75/ea, the little Thorsen ratchet was $2 and the pliers were $1.50. The two punches and pry bar came from the free pile:

Major drooling (I'm going to have to replace the keyboard after today!)

Not a garage sale find, but it was on C-List. The ad was for a workbench. The PO said he had gotten it from a machine shop. Nothing too special but the legs were splayed and they would look great under the section of bowling lane I plan to repurpose as a workbench. As I'm disassembling and cleaning up the legs, I spy a plate. Hmm, a little cleanup reveals a "Holley Carburetor Co." plate. I thought that was pretty cool! A little additional provenance as to where those legs/bench had been! Not bad for a $20 bill.

Thats pretty damn cool. I wonder how many carbs sat on that bench.

Just a couple of cool items today I really liked the old pliers in the old box, even if it's torn up a bit. $5 is more than I've ever paid for yard sale pliers but I made an exception in this case. The old clock was also $5 and it runs! Craftsman 1/4" drive box only for 50 cents, it had a =V= bar that goes into the hole in the 1/4" breaker bar inside. Anyone building a set?

DON'T LOOSE THAT BAR ! That is the first item to get lost in a set. No-one knows what it's for, so they just think that it's a piece of scrap rod and toss it. I've only ever found 1, and I had to buy a nearly full set to get it. If you choose not to keep it, I can give it a good home in one of my sets. ;)

Just out of curiosity, what is the bar used for?

Just what they said it goes into the hole in hr breaker bar handle, and that turns it into a Tee Handle.

Some of the 1/4 driver torque handles had a similar hole in the plastic and you could probably use it there

^^^^ what he said ^^^^

If your breaker bar has a hole through the end of the handle, the bar is used to turn the breaker bar into a T-handle to spin the nut off the stud. Some of the early 3/8" and 1/2" breaker bars had them as well, but they were phased out first.

Many people believe that the hole on the end of the breaker bar was put there to hang the breaker on a nail. Not so.

Thanks, it seems like everyone up here is throwing out these high end corded drills for cordless. I recall that drill sold for around $100 decades ago.

I guess I'm old fashioned because I like to grab corded first as long as there's an outlet handy.

Best I could do was a pile of plastic bins for less than 50c each at the flea market. I'll spend 5 times that on refills for my label maker :)

:+1: Hard to run out of electricity in the wall, unlike a battery can. Those hole shooters are nice. I picked one up quite a few weeks back at a garage sale for $1. Cleaned up and works real nice. What size is yours? Sadly mine is 1/4" max, but variable speed. Real nice made piece of equipment IMHO. Great deal.

WOW frontier, that is alot of very nice tools for <$50 . Out of curiosity, were those asking prices or did you have to negotiate quite a bit to get them that low?

OK, having family over for the day cut into my normal routine, and I missed the Col FM. but manager an hour this AM for 4 scheduled stops, and nearly got skunked tool-wise.

I did find this for $4 at one block sale. Its a really little lamp, very vintage, marble base and all but one of the pieces in it's assembly is brass. Just for size reference those tiles are 6x6. Takes two bulbs and they have to be the small bulbs(Std base) or what the OP did was use the narrow flame style bulbs.

It struck my fancy, as I'm gradually replacing all the post modern **** lamps with vintage or rebuilt vintage.

SWMBO HATES the shade (I like it...) so that will be a negotiation... :eyecrazy:

Last chance at the last stop the guy was still setting up but had an old craftsman fold top box out and the top tray had a mis-matched "set" of sockets, and I dug around and found the other pieces:

attachment.php

Four SO sockets, (7/8, 1, 1-1/16, 1-1/4)all "E" (Emergency) except the 1" marked "G" (Government) War years? :dunno: My first of these breed in sockets I believe; one Williams 1/4" in 3/8 drive. an aluminum bodied general auto center punch, and that odd "spanner" marked; EMF Co. Detroit, A-1308. No clue what it is for! Socket in the end appears to be either 7/8 or 15/16.

Two bucks

Yep there are times a corded drill is the best medicine! (And times when the cordless rules...)

And those were well north of a C-note back in the day!

No, Waht you see is what I got. I'm pretty selective about small carry boxes, and this one was thrashed, dipped in oil and grease, and not with messing with. As it is I have WAY too many empties laying around.

I could resist the art deco thermostat ($.25) and the two old GE clocks for $10.

P1020051.jpg
Dave, I've been looking for one of those large GE clocks for a while, for my shop. Maybe I've got some tools we could swap for the larger one? PM me if interested.

Nice haul, by the way. You ****!

Not exactly a yard sale find but pretty close. In my neighborhood you can leave anything you want at the road and come trash day the city will pick it up. Saw a Stihl FS40 trimmer sitting out by the road on the road that runs behind my property. Walked over and snagged it, initially it wouldn't pull. Rope was tangled up, then it would crank over. Took it apart and cleaned out the carb, filter and replaced the plug. Put a little fresh fuel in it and it started right up. Needs a head and a gas cap but that's it.

I love seeing lawn mowers, weed whackers, etc. put out for the trash. It usually takes just an air filter and a spark plug to get them running. Sometimes just gasoline. People are duma$$es sometimes!

d_frontier, the black angled 3/8" drive wrench in the $17.00 batch is a Pratt & Whitney for the nuts holding the base of aircraft cylinders to the crankcase. In the field it was used with a heavy-duty 3/8" drive long extension. In a repair station they had a gooseneck driver that put the drive end directly over the wrench opening for use with a torque wrench. The straight extensions are quite common, but the goosenecks are very rare. The 9/16" 12-point version was also used on starters and generators.

Well Google found a lead: the EMF is apparently for an Everitt-Metzger-Flanders/Studebaker collaboration and since it is marked "Detroit" should place it pre 1919.

So something for an Early Studebaker or the partnered Everitt-Metzger-Flanders cars... (Once the 4th largest MFG of autos in the US!)

http://www.detroit1701.org/Studebaker%20Plant.html

I'll bet that old plant is for sale for $10 or so, given Detroit's current financial woes. I would love to walk through it and see what's in there still, even just a few trinkets would be something.

I like that mystery EMF spanner. Might have been used on the machinery that made car parts . . .??? Whatever it is it's a cool piece of Americana.

Mid 1990s I believe. They also had red & green handles at different times.

I remember buying a red stubby phillips for $.99 at the register in 2002. Guess the different colors might be a regional thing. Wish I bought the whole set since those red handles seem to have a better resistance to grease than the clear/red clear/blue handles.

6" I am pretty sure it came in the craftsman crown 1/4" drive set from the 1970's

I guess I know what my two bars are for now. I found the smaller one in a craftsman hand carry box that had a almost complete set of craftsman 1/2 sockets and blackhawk wrenches. The smaller one is not marked and I picked it up thinking it was a leverage handle for blackhawk ratchets and breaker bars but it fits like a glove in sockets that have the holes for t-handles so I'm guessing its craftsman. And the longer one is a Steven waldens st-20 if any one is wondering the part number on that. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1376196586.753676.jpg

Not yet as I've been on the run all week long, and may not at least with this one, as it appears to have never been used. The wick inside is pristine. On the other hand the attached case won't unscrew at all... :dunno:

They want several million dollars, they didn't even know exactly who owned it until someone sued over the Banksy mural that was removed from it. Not much of anything in it (or any of the other buildings that every can get into). Couple years back a couple of people pushed an old heavy duty truck out of the third floor.
