I'm going to take a stab in the dark and say that is cast metal. It's not that you can't weld to it, you will need specific sticks to do so. I'm sure some experts will chime in here soon enough.

You're correct. When welding cast, I will need to prepare it and slow down the cooling time with a rosebud torch. I've welded an exhaust manifold about 25 years ago. The metal was extra dirty. I figure that there are newer rods available. Besides, the good thing is that I'm not welding something that need to be sealed.

If I was welding it I would use Eutectic 680 rod, It is expensive but well worth it. It is made to weld dissimilar materials and handles the different shrinkage you get from different metals. At 140,000 tensile strength it is one of the strongest rods out there. At least what I know of. It comes in DC arc rod and TIG, and most gas/weld supply places can get it.
The base I am showing is cast Steel base from a Caterpillar track and it holds my 1" x 42" ribbon sander, I would have welded it more if it was holding a working vise.

Sorry, but the quick answer is no. I work on the Henry Ford method of mass production.I don't mind doing 50 or 100 of a production run but anytime I do a custom order I always loose.

Loving the tool **** in this thread...

Found this one in the pile today. It says Canedy-otto. I knew they were in to drills, but I have never seen a vise. Regards from the Colorado nightmare.

Nicad rods... Cold weld... No pre heating needed.
Put a short dab on and let it cool.
It might take you a few hours to get it done but it works.
Peen between welds. Not cheap.

I would try to find something that isn't cast for your base. Or, try welding it first and if its **** then get plate or something. Like they said before, you need to make sure you don't shock it with heat so keep the torch on it for as long as possible after you weld it, and don't forget to preheat.

Oh nice! The only one of mine is the 4C that has replaceable jaws, the rest are fixed. Maybe one day I'll be able to find ones that all have replaceable jaws, but until then I'm happy with my four... :)

I can't wait till the weather cools down so I can get on restoring them. It's just too darn hot outside!

Outlander, sent you a PM, sorry about that. I am building 8 pairs of 1C on this lot. kind of getting overwhelming, jaw building is my night time fun but turning into a full time job. Thanks for the pics. Nice vises. I have been stuck on Wiltons for so long and now getting into all the other vises out there, the Reeds, Chas Parkers and Starretts sure impress me. I have collected many thanks to Big Caddy getting me to look a little closer on the area sales, but just to busy to work on them, some day I will start posting my start to finish vises.
I went over to our town welder two days ago to quote a machining project for him, I brought my camera and this guy collects any vise he can get his hands on, he picked up a Emmett Pattern vise for $35. and I told him he ***** and almost got punched out, I guess he never seen this site, he also had two large Parker's hidden behind hi 3" thick welding bench. One is a 289 1/2 and the other is a 289. He does not use them.

I still vote for punching him:lol: He's got some nice Parkers in there and i think i even spy a stake anvil for shaping metal pinched in the second vise. See if he wants to trade them for something smaller that he might use more often. Nobody wants some big, bulky vise sucking up all of the workbench space:evil:

Re: YOST 206 just picked it up tonight

this is my $50 find and this thing is a beast:shocking: the Yost website says this vise weighs in @ 118# i belive every bit of it its 13in tall 6in wide jaws and from the back of the dynamic jaw to front of handle it is 24-3/4 in and seems to be in pretty good shape nothing is broke and everything turns freely,i need to inspect further the jaws are serrated and pretty smoothed out also but look like they are part of the vise i cannot find no pins, screws, seams or anything kind of different.
I took 3 other pics and it wont let me upload them will try later

further inspection not so good on swiveli checked this vise over before i paid him for it everything worked ok when i got home i noticed it did not turn good in a certain spot now i know why the guy told me he found it in the middle of the road after i paid him it must have fell perfectly flat on the base whatever it fell off from truck or trailer who knows, gonna have to see if i can mig it up with some 4130 cast alloy wireanyone ever use it or have a better idea

You definitely ****. I have looked for one of those for a few years now. I have a very unusual post vise that is built on a similar idea but you adjust the bottom screw with your foot. Will try to post it. Do you know if they made different sizes of those fisher vises? I would assume so.
Glad to see it working.

You would not believe what he has stored, he collects everything metal, he really likes the Pexto stuff even though he does not use it. He is trying to purchase the acorn welding table from the guy with over 100 vises in Golden, it comes with some of the square clamps and fixtures, he is very excited but has to sell one of his 2-1/2 thick welding tables weighing more then 3.000 lb's.

Added more pic's of Steve's vises that I had a chance to take pic's of.

I like that little Stanley in the last picture, all the way on the right. That is a great looking little vise. Stanley made them in all sizes are are incredibly detailed for such a little tool.

I found good sized 60-80lb vise on CL out of an old barn a couple weeks ago for $25 and have been working at cleaning it up and hope to get it back into working shape but I'm having trouble ID'ing it to find parts. Can any of you great and wise vise gurus help? Maybe I got a piece of chicom scrap and no one is willing to tell me :?

I'm pretty sure its a Wilton. They made a lot of different variations of their mid level "mechanics vises" and yours is one of them. Its almost as if they were assembled with what ever parts were laying around the werehouse at that moment.

IF you want some further conformation that its a Wilton, take the operating handle out and wire wheel the nut. I bet you will find another 6 digit number, ending with the number "9" on it somewhere

My 1st USA vise, work in progress. I just took a wire cup brush on the grinder to it for half hour. Looks **** in raw form.

On a side note, before I paint it, would washing it down with stove cleaner be an OK idea?

Sent from a Galaxy Nexus in Canada.

I love the stand on that thing. Any idea what it used to be? I'd like to make one like that for my big Reed.

Dude, hit the BUY IT NOW button !! 5 hr drive is nothing for 1250 lbs of vise for $199 . . . . . . are you kidding ??

Heck, you could quadruple your money just by picking it up & then turn around and put on CL . . .
. . . . . but DON"T . . . . keep that BEAST !!

A GJer needs to grab that baby ASAP !!

Somebody just bought it. I live in a rowhouse and I already have three vises bigger that that one. I really don't need another big one, although if it was within 200 miles I would've bought it anyway.

That's a great buy for $200. Once you get it home could you let me know if there's anything on the stand that indicates what it's from? And post more pics when you have it set up.

Been away from the World Wide Web these last few days working with Mark and the vises of the Golden Co. Horde. Good Times. Wound up with 64 vises leaving Mark still with a large group left. Will be completing the inventory catalogue in the next few days and get some more photo's up. Genuine thrill to see all that iron collected by a guy, Dave (RIP) who had a passion for vises and detail.

I'm digging that Ridgid, how big is it? Looks like some of those just have a little surface rust and were hardly used!
