That 3/4 hp Craftsman motor grants you a YOU ****!! Good score Craptain

Today was $6 day for me, woke up late and hit 2 garage sales with no luck, then an estate sale and scored the Sears doe set, Indestro swivel, Proto crows foot and Craftsman brake tool.
pic00424.jpg

After a short lunch break, I hit another garage sale where I came up empty again so I stopped by my fave pawn shop on the way home where I was surprised with a new set of Blues that I didn't have a pair of yet :willy_nil Also got a long 1/4" Craftsman locking extension and a NOS Swingline stapler. The stapler was in the bottom of an old tool box and the cardboard packaging was marked $19.99, somehow I left the packaging in the tool box. :dunno: I got to the counter and offered $5, guy says "I gotta get $6, that's $5 for the shiny stapler and $1 for those two old tools". How ever he wants to add it up, the price was right :lol_hitti

I thought your pawn shop always charged you $10.90. You must have gotten a newbie today.

:+1: :lol_hitti I think I'd say with this guy though.

YOU **** Nine. Although I'm surprised that you didn't already have a pair of the channellock crimpers.

I couldn't find $10(in my mind) worth of stuff today, just glad he didn't counter with $10 or it would have been a $10.90 day :lol_hitti

TY TY, I have several crimper brands but this is the first CL pair I have come across within my budget ;)

Check out the auction I just got back from previewing. OMG!!!
http://brownsauction.com/auction/211341/dutsch-transmission-machine-shop

Ill be there bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning. Anyone who did not go preview is screwed, there is no room inside for the auction so they will have to know what the item is from a generic list :willy_nil

Cross your fingers for me, there is an Atlas rotary table on one of the older DP's, I will be trying for it among other things.

I got this Starrett #199 master precision level for $60. It is in about as sad of shape as I have ever personally seen one in, usually you don't buy a $700-800 dollar precision level and treat it this way. They are good to .0005" over 12 inches, but it is 15" long. The wood box sat in standing water (!) for some period of time, in addition to the lid being smashed and crudely duct taped. Then, the kicker, some unenlightened individual decided the best way to take the surface rust (guessing from that standing water) off was to hit it with a die grinder w/ a sanding disc :mad:

Good news is I can get it re-scraped flat and adjusted for very nice price and I will be less than $100 into this level. If I sell it I will have to get a case that isn't as horrifically bad as this one. But I might just hang onto it.

I was thinking about it on the way home, I imagine it's 5k+, HUGE, many, many rooms. Lots of cool old storage cabinets, many still had the state id number on them from where the machinist shop apparently bought them from the state auction. There are a few cool boxes I will be bidding on, one is an SK Tools stack, one is a grey/red Craftsman stack and a crown top cantilever box. Machines galore, I'm only interested in a couple, there is a heavy duty Rockwell 15-249 drill press and the Atlas I mentioned with the rotary table. I'm pretty psyched right now :eyecrazy:

Oh yes! And I have one of my bikes on it already. Been wanting one for a while but never knew where to find one. There were actually quite a few bike repair tools that I have never seen before, but the prices were up there.

Not from a garage sale. Those are all done in these parts. Got it from CL. $60 (in a roundabout way).

Mid 60s Rem Line. Pretty much what I wanted in a bottom box. It was fun carrying it up the stairs.

Today was pretty good for November. Some Craftsman items. All the sockets and drive tools are -V- or =V=. I'll try and get to the Plomb and P&C in a bit.

Wishing you the best of luck, Nine!

As you know, I like auctions like this myself. But whenever there isn't room inside, I always worry about people removing items, stealing items, or switching items from one box to another AFTER I have previewed things. Of course all those actions constitute fraud and theft, but to my never-ending surprise, many people who would consider themselves to be totally "honest" see nothing wrong with these sneaky, underhanded maneuvers. So while an honest bidder pays a premium price for a box lot (or machine, etc) which he knows contains a valuable component, some other creep buys a box of seemingly worthless junk for a few bucks...because he has hidden that valuable item in the bottom of that box!

Whenever I notice someone doing that, I try to act like I didn't see it. Then I wait my turn, and when I am SURE they aren't watching me, I'll move it back out of that box. Then I'll bid up their loaded box against them for a little bit, and quit. Then I watch for their reaction later.

Great stuff, everyone! It's been very frustrating lately as the weather has turned cold and sale season has ended. Here's what I've found over the past week or two:

The 3/8" drive SK set is metric, 7-17mm missing the 16. The swivel is generic and the short extension is Proto. Found it at a thrift store (that seldom has tools, much less good ones) today for $3. The Williams DBE Superrench and the Proto 1/2" combo came from the same place last week, $1 each. A co-worker found the pliers at an estate sale. They are clearly Wilde (design, handle pattern, etc), but branded "Whitaker". A store brand I assume? Finally, I don't often pick up old power tools, but I thought this drill was too unusual to pass up. It's a Spiegel, from the department store or catalog. It's non-reversible and the 1/4" chuck is a Jacobs. Oh, and yes, it runs.

Hopefully I can find some sales these next few months and keep the winter from being as long, cold, and dark as last year's.

Luckily I haven't run into anyone switching any items yet, I have heard about it and also about people sabotaging things to look broken just to get it cheap, etc. I play honest, just hoping the others don't have an eye on the same things I am. For instance, I will be bidding on the old Craftsman boxes and possibly the Sk, rather than the few Snap On rollers and stacks next to them. I checked off all the cool old storage bins that I feel will go cheap, one small box of Atlas lathe tooling etc. Right next to these items are boxes full of reamers, drill bits from 2" - 2-15/16", newer bins with hardware and things I think will bring big dollar. I hope to come in like a rust vulture and scoop up all the old dead tools and cabinets and take them back to my nest

Are those screwdrivers on the left Craftsman professionals? I don't think I have ever seen them with the clear/blue/red handles before.

Some P&C, mostly pre WWII. Been looking for the 1/4" swivel for awhile. These are the first P&C marked extractors I've seen. I'll have to check the drivers SC, not sure.

I don't know if they are professionals, my dad had a set growing up that we slowly destroyed over the years. They were great screwdrivers.

Went to 5 YS's today that said they had "lots" of tools. 3 weren't worth the gas, 1 was too new and expensive and had pre-sold most of the listed tools, and the last one was a revisit from 2 weeks ago (the place I got the box of pulleys from). At the last stop I dug down to the bottom of one of the misc boxes and found a pile of blades for a Craftsman Moulding Head. I have 2 sets already, but one of them is missing 2 sets of blades. Since I couldn't remember which profiles I was missing, I grabbed them all. When I asked how much, the guy remembered that he had the head stock as well. I didn't need it but figured WTH. :dunno:

When I got home and went to fill the case, I found out that the new head is bigger than the ones in my sets. In addition, 4 of the 6 sets of blades had new profiles that aren't in the sets I had. :rocker:

I don't have any plans to make moldings right now, but if it ever comes up I now have more choices. All for an extra $7.

First pic - the new moulding head and blades
Second pic - shows the size of the new head next to the old head.

I got the atlas woot!!!

Good job, nine4. I'm looking forward to pictures of your haul.

I've been hitting sales around here but not buying much in the tool department.

This morning was the first time in a very long while since somebody has stolen something out of my bag, as it was behind the checkout counter so that put a damper on my otherwise good morning.

This is from rear of the crowd, bidders packed around the two display monitors.

Auction is about 1/4 way through. I bailed for a quick lunch and restroom break, then I'll be headed back over there to try and get the boxes I'm after.

Fairly slow day today, 5 planned stops. A few unplanned that didn't pan out (I has a nice save going, at one place, but they wanted too much $$$, so it got left on the ground...)

HS Flea M. saves: $1 for a Thorsen 2" 1/2" drive extension; $1 for the Flints, $3 for 3 ALBR Non Sparking AMPCO DOE wrenches, $3 for the Kraueter Alligator 5" snips & Great Neck tack puller;

attachment.php

Garage sale and $5 for a Vietnam era Army jacket, it has the Velcro sleeve closers, and a zipped up hood, no date marks though... Wow; That stain on the sleeve is near invisible in real life... probably wash out. I had to leave a nice Vise there, only 3" but old and heavy, Reed I think. another "everything's for sale (but not the vise, or the RCBS reloading gear for that matter... :dunno: )

attachment.php

An estate sale I need to go back to when the shop is open... from the garage: Mastercraft Pipe wrench, 2-5/8" clamp on vise, tiny Wood handled screwdriver, 3 Lb 4 oz Primus Propane tank + adaptor $15 all

It was a garage sale I found on craigslist, a son had inherited a jobox of tools from his father (whom I was told was a millwright). Most of the stuff at the sale was junk and I mean junk. There were a few machinists tools but they were all chinese. All of it was rusty (from that standing water). Then I found the level.

I am either going to resell or just hang onto and use to level machines. I have a small horizontal mill and I'd like to get a metal lathe when I have the room.
