I like vise suggestion. Failing that a quality 8" F-clamp.

For the car: jumper cables if those count as a tool. I'm astounded by how many people don't carry them.

Everyone needs a "handy housewife helper" in their house!

I have a garage full of tools, but the one tool that is kept in the kitchen drawer is a screwdriver with the changeable tips. That seems to be thing we reach for most when in the house so imagine that is the one thing no one should be without.

Knife/multitool. I don't go anywhere with out my Leatherman, even when going out for the evening with swmbo it goes in the car or jacket pocket. It may not be the "Best" tool for every job but it will get it done when nothing else is available.
