Re: These made my day...

I'm a long time (and very frequent lurker) on this thread. I don't post much, but I decided to share todays good fortune...Wife is away for the weekend with the daughters and it's just me and my son! So, we went Estate Saleing this morning and we picked up:

Matco 316A1 .....

Craftsman 14hp bench grinder.....

Great stuff Boog. Can you post a pic of your top and middle boxes? You don't see too many vintage matco boxes. Be careful with that 14hp grinder. Sounds like it would be hard to stop. ;) I like the "For Farm and Home use only".

Boog-
Both of those pieces are suckworthy! That box is going to clean up nicely. Don't forget to post pics in the vintage toolbox thread once you mate it up to the other boxes.

Jake, the only difference in he cylinder locks is usually the style of the latch bar/hook, you should be able to simply switch the old one over...

ps: Nice score! I would NOT have passed on the other unpainted one for $10.

Boog great first post and usuck scores,! errors and all!

Thank you sir, these would be my first official ****(s). I don't know if I'm truly satisfied for this weekend. There's a couple more sales tomorrow, and with sales becoming more scarce this time of year...

I'll be sure to post pics in the vintage boxes thread. Great idea! Thanks!

I was expecting a complete rain out as we got rain late last night for most of the night. but VERY early it stopped and cleared off. That was the good news, the bad was the only promising YS was canceled due to rain. At least they changed their ad title in CL... saved me a trip.

I hit one other YS, but nada there; I even helped the oldster running it get stuff from his sheds and out, so my good deed for the day, while getting an early first look at what was in the bins, but no luck...

The HS flea was less than 1/2 full, but better than I expected considering the rain. Two vendors had something worthwhile:

A brass/bronze battery cable clamp, and a compression gauge I bought solely because it had Mercury on the face plate. I'm thinking this is for outboards??? :dunno: $2 all

attachment.php

And at another vendor; small tongs, with a grooved jaw face, Boker Pliers, I believe knurled for canon plugs; and mini Peterson vise grips 4LN, long nose 4BN bent nose, my first, and std jaw 4WR all new sizes for me all mine are 5 or 6 and up... I need to give these a soak in SG and get rest of the green paint off...

$7 all

Close up of the tongs:

And someone gave me a free MW sewing machine. supposed to be working, which will save wear and tear on SWMBO's good Pfaff for the usually heavier **** I get doing at times. not an industrial, but I have a hand crank one of those if push comes to shove... if it is dead or past reasonable repair, I'll use it for parts..

That compression tester is neat. That does look like the 60's motors K logo.
Good deal on the vise grips, no china there.

$3 from an estate sale. Pliers are Proto and Diamond, sockets are mostly SK with a few MAC and one Snap-On (and I think one Cornwell and one Proto). Missed out on the two small boxes in the pictures.

Good find jakemac!

Boog, you **** twice!! Thanks for posting, welcome to the thread!

Love the vise grips Outlaw and sewing machines are always handy. Even if it don't work, they are full of cams, rods, and other misc heavy duty hardware that can be repurposed, not to mention the foot pedal for dremel or other electric motor control.

We hit a few stops today, even a 15 house neighborhood sale but only two stops yielded these measly findings for $4.50 total. I even hit the $10 pawn shop and spent 15 minutes dirtying up my fingernails to get blasted with a high *** quote on some dirty old blues I got too many of already... :lol_hitti

Got some stuff from Lump the other day:
All Klein except for the Bell System Crescent pliers.

Jeff, I didn't realize you were so into Klein. I passed on a Klein labeled "Yankee" driver today (Two fisted plastic handle). It may still be there next month, (unless they cancel that FM, seems like they sometimes do that first of the year...) Should I get it for you if within reason?

Here's my pick from today.. And--at the best time. I am beginning body work on my '65 Suburban and actually need all the sanding boards/blocks. So--the Auto Body Estate Sale in Kenosha, WI was just the thing I needed.
A quick run-down of items seen here follows:
Multiple sanding blocks with different widths/curved faces
Vise Grip C-Clamps (+ 2 Taiwan copiesignore the $8 tags...)
Gray 4000lb High-Lift Jack Stands
Dynabrade palm sander(just needs new disk) otherwise it's near new
Snap-On pry bars (they'll be given to the local SO guy for replacements..)
Old Canadian-Made dent-puller suction cup
Great old near-new level made in Sterling, Ill
Disston wood saw (too cool to pass up an was found in a dark shed at an estate sale)
Unknown brand double-cut saw with a Montgomery Wards price tag for $1.49
Old forged body spoon and "S-hook" (I think the S-thing will work for moldings--haven't cleaned it up yet for any possible mfg. markings.)
German "Channel-Lock" style pliers
Kreuter Cutter pliers
Channel-Lock pliers
Wanna guess what this all cost?

OK, I was right about the Mercury Outboard logo on the compression tester!:

kiekhaefer-mercury-outboards-78387238.jpg

Mid sixties? Kiekhaefer-Mercury-outboards... (Never heard of the Kiekhaefer part, but I was never a big time boat/mercury guy either...)

Kiekhaefer was the guy that bought a foundering outboard motor Mfg, co. resurrected it and started making outboards into more reliable engines than in the past, and developed the place into Mercury

Had our Company Christmas party on Friday so only just recovered :lol_hitti
Took myself to a car boot, pretty small turn out due to weather.
Picked up a few items;
View media item 35900Small red metal carry case £2
View media item 35901Plastic 3 sided rule £1
Mini tin snips £1.50
Blue jewellers vice (no brand) £1
Hand vice £2
And yet another old adjustable £1 got it home and rubbed away the grime it turns out to be ex-british army stamped 1945 :)

Finally weird deal of the day...

View media item 35899A new leather nail pouch. I say weird because I was looking at a used hessian one, stall holder said "£2" I pulled a face he then goes "how about this one?" showing the above "£3", before I can say "ok" he then goes "make it £2.50......tell you what £1"
Easiest bartering I've ever had to do! :willy_nil

Hoping to get to the auction house again tomorrow as their online catalogue seems to have more tools from the same house/estate clearance...and I think I spotted more snap-on spanners in the bottom of the catalogue photos

Outlaw,
Good find on the Kiekhafer/Mercury compression tester! I hit a couple sales this summer that had tools from former Mercury mechanics. One Kiekhafer ignition testing tool did pretty well for me. I kicked myself after realizing some of the other stuff I'd left behind...

That tester would have been sold about the time this ad was popular:

I scored this on Sat. at an auction. Funny thing is it almost didn't happen. I was running late (my two year old son played a BIG part in it:willy_nil), but THANK GOD I told a work buddy that I was heading to the auction. He decided to go and got there before it started. He sent me a text when I was on m way asking me what I wanted to pay for it, and I quickly replied back $100. Well, when I walked in to the auction house the vise was up for bid and my buddy was bidding on it with another guy:eyecrazy:. I got it for $100.

It's not the greatest price nor is it the greatest anvil, but I'm stoked to have one. Every time I see one for sale it is either useless or ridiculously priced. This guy is a 100#'er and though it has some waves on the top plane as well as some small chunks along the top missing it will do everything that I need it for. Now I need to source out a nice hard wood stump and make a base for it.

I am now officially in the anvil owners club:beer:!! I thought the day would never come.:rocker:

Toomany, you HAVE to see this ad for a similar vise! now I would take most every claim made with about a ton of salt, but you stole that one regardless...

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/art/4196876748.html

WOW!! Thanks for the link outlaw:thumbup:!! That's definitely the same type anvil, and the auction was in MD. I'm going to look for the "dots" next time I'm at the shop. I hear ya about the "history lesson", but I can attest to it being 100% forged. I must of hit it with a small body hammer about 20 times to hear that awesome sound.

I was bringing it to my truck and my buddy asked how much it weighed. I said about 100lbs, and he said no way. He thought it was a lot less until he attempted to pick it off of my tailgate. He's 5'3" and 135lbs soaking wet, and needless to say it barely moved after his attempt.

I helped a friend move from Texas to Fort Pierce Florida and we hit hit a few yard sales and flea markets since she needed furniture LOL. I picked up a few cheap tools and shipped them all back in one large flat rate box.

The Flohr 20 hog ring pliers and shoe form and stand were $3 from a sale only 2 blocks from her new house. There was the coolest articulating vintage cast iron seat that would attach to a work bench post there but at a $100 I had to pass. Didn't take a picture of it either.

The Estwing hammer was $2 and the two mini anvils were 10 cents each. The anvils were cast by a relative and are rough but cool paperweights.

The Craftsman wood plane has the oval logo and the wood handles were in nice shape. $10 (1/2 price) from a pawn store.

The second pic was from a roadside small fleamarket and everything was a dollar each!

Working Craftsman Crown label 3/8 drill

Craftsman vintage belt driven grinder

Working Sunbeam hand mixer

The hacksaw that is only half in the picture appears to have a Millers Falls logo on it.

Waiting for box #2 to come in the mail!

Well box #2 from Florida came in the mail a few days ago.

Two machinists clamps, larger one is a Starrett, smaller one has no markings. $5 for both.

Snap On windshield wiper arm removal tool, just what I need for my vintage cars and trucks. $2

Not much for decent looking garage sales around here lately but I did pick up a bucket of tools from the pawn shop for $30 plus a Petersen and a Proto Challenger vise grips for $5 more.

Astro pinstripe remover, Channelock pliers and end cutters, cats paw pry bar, Sears timing light, long nose Petersens's, Stanley hand plane, Craftsman Crown pruning shears, Craftsman chalk line.

Irwin Qucik Grip clamp, German sliding bar clamp, ratchet screwdriver with storage for 6 bits, PVC ratchet tube cutting plers and regular tubing cutter, stainless mutlitool, 2 Petersen vise grips, Kobalt extra long nose plers, Fiskars pinking shears.

Nice Petersen and Challenger vise grips.

Pile of stuff to go into the garage sale.

Not pictured was a small stack of new 4 1/2 angle grinder flap and cutting discs.

Here's some stuff from an auction I went and stood in the blowing snow and cold for yesterday.. Turns out the weather scares people away..

Here's the whole lot showing a bunch of miscellaneous screw-drivers that were in the box with all the ratchets and extensions.

View media item 35931
Craftsman 1/2"-drive "V" sockets-almost complete minus 9/16 and 5/8 sockets
Proto Dyna Ring Impact sockets both 1/2" and 3/8" drive
Couple Craftsman IMPACT sockets
Various Craftsman, Williams, Mac, Cornwell sockets in un-complete sets.
Craftsman 36" 1/2'drive breaker bar with various 1/2drive extensions
Plomb 3/8" breaker bar
Fleet 3/8" ratchet
Proto 3/8" ratchet (probably smoothest ratchet I own now, seems to be fine-tooth as well.)
Thorsen (Taiwan) 3/8" ratchet)

View media item 35932
View media item 35933

Proto, Plomb, Craftsman, S-K, Indestro, Williams, and Cornwell wrenches and some other "independent" named wrenches.

All in all-not bad I don't think for $35

Some nice scores this weekend! I didn't do any sales this weekend, just some time with the wife as she isn't felling well. Of course I'm sick now but not bad enough to miss work.
