Not stupid, more so ignorant, there is a difference. I think they are just spelling it how they have heard it pronounced. Not many non technical folks know the term radial, so radio seems much more fitting. :dunno:

Another one that you see commonly misspelled, like way off, is acetylene. It kinda sounds like A settling torch to some and so that is how they spell it out.

The worst for me is when this stuff happens in a conversation. I need all of my will power not to strangle someone when the say "pacific" when they should be saying "specific". Drives me insane!!!

I've seen so many of those, it's unsettling. Also plenty of sawzaws & radio arm saws here, and more "labtops" than I can count in the computer section.

High level manager where i work constantly says "it's a mute point" during conference calls and has no idea.

Gawd, that makes me nuts.

My son took a picture of a body shop outdoor sign that actually said, "We ficks dents". Holy Mother of God I'd have to strangle that guy.

And inevitably, someone will chime in and say it doesn't matter if you understood the message. Of course that's a cover for their own borderline illiteracy, but I'm an AHole for saying such a thing.

I saw one that took to the next level - he was selling a "radio alarm saw." It doesn't seem like it would take that much thought to say to yourself "that doesn't make sense at all..."

I know I'm guilty of typing that one. I guess it's because as a kid, I thought it was wheel barrel. I always thought the design came from attaching wheels and handles to a barrel. :dunno:

When I was a kid, it wasn't until I saw them in a Sears-Roebuck catalog that I realized that the things that my dad wore were "overalls" and not "overhauls".

One of the plumbers I work with has his own language too...He was telling us once how upset he was about something: "I was VIVID with the guy" he said!

I love, "For all intensive purposes".
What the hell is an intensive purpose?
Of course you all know the saying is,
"For all intents and purposes".
I had a college professor that said that
wrongly about a dozen times per class.
It was giving me fits.

Well, 'irregardless...' :dunno:

I once had a boss that used 'irregardless' during a staff meeting. Apparently I shook my head when I heard it and he asked what was wrong. When I simply told him that it was not a proper word, he got VERY pissed. He was a narcissist and did not like being challenged. It was about the 5th or 6th time that I corrected him about something. He didn't like me.

A current thread here is, "What's Stronger THEN Red Loctite?"

C'mon man! WHY OH WHY don't people know that "then" and "than" are two (NOT "to" or "too") entirely different words?

To the OP, I think you're wrong. I literally see too many "radio alarm" saws on CL, if you will.

Unfortunately, that is a word. I say it to my wife in various forms on a regular basis to annoy her. She used to have an employee that would use it all of the time and drive her nuts. I yell out "UNREGARDLESS, ILLREGARDLESS, YOU'REREGARDLESS." Makes her want to kill me.

Not proper.

nonstandard

Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

I don't post much... but I have to after this.

Twerk, selfie, FOMO, and derp were recently added to the Oxford English dictionary, but I will never deem them proper words for use. Just because it's in a dictionary doesn't mean people will think you are an educated person for using them "because they're in the dictionary."

You know what grinds my gears- when someone calls a winch a "wench" Not sure if they're trying to be funny or just ignorant.
