That's alot of pallet racking and should provide a ton of storage. That come from the recycling place too ?

Scrap yard. Our big factory (pgw) got rid of a ton of it in scrap bins.. I told the guys to keep an eye out for it. . Scored on that deal. .

Why the hell do factories do that ? They scrap stuff like that out when they'd make more money selling/silent bid to the employees.

I have a friend that has a 60x80 with boiler heat in the floor. The guy installing the loops ran a 1000' runs before returning to the boiler. This was about 6 years ago and his system won't work. They increased the pump volume and finally gave up. He now uses a used oil furnace. Sad to see the boiler not being used after spending that much $.

My system will hopefully be up and running next week. We kept al the loops within 10% of each other in length. Right around 300' max of 5/8" tubing.

:shocking: Man thats a ton of lines.. I hope you've got some spare time on your hands, its gonna take a lot of trial and error getting the flows equaled out to have even heat distribution. Do you have a build thread started? Building info?

On your buddies system... how did they insulate the floor under the slab? If you dont have enough insulation its a total waste trying to heat the slab. How is the building insulated? And how big of a wood burner did they use? (Btu?) A building that big you'd need to run about a 200k btu boiler. Thats some $ right there. And does he now use the oil burner to heat the floor or do the tubes on the ceiling?

I have a build thread going for mine. Search under my name.
My friend uses the used oil furnace with a blower. Doesn't use the boiler or tubes anymore. Sad deal.

Busy day today.. been organizing / building / designing all day in the garage.. got another section of my pallet racking up (grey).. tore down the big one I had (green / yellow) and cut it up to make a bad *** work bench. Which I think I'm gonna make a thread about. . Check my signature I'll get it up maybe tonight.

Anyways. Here's a few shots of my new pallet racking, my bench I built, and the semi cleanliness my garage is achieving.. (I took the rest of week off so I hope to get it all done by this weekend ;)

Still need to figure out how I'm gonna arrage my wood working tools... and my other work bench I've gotta put up.. lots of stuff gets parked in here at night... (truck, durango, mule) hrmm.. :headscrat

Uh oh I think you're running out of room already. Still looking for a table saw ? Woody 73 mentioned he has one for saw. I believe it's similar to mine and he's in Columbus.

I actually just bought one the other day (similar to yours).. and a floor model belt sander... and a hand power planer... package deal.. ;) you can see it in the second picture a little..

And you can never build a garage big enough... thats why I've got an entire wall of floor to ceiling storage :willy_nil

Well thanks ;) the burner is a woodmaster 3300.. it's rated at 75,000 btu on 12 hr burn. It's 6 years old and it was listed for $2.5k on cl.. well just say I paid less ;)

Did you pour footers under the load bearing walls of your two story living area? I like what you have done, and am in the process of designing something similar with a two story internal structure. If I go with post type construction, I figured the second story would have to be supported by posts as well.

pad was just a fuzz under 40 yds3, formed up a little stoop for my side door roughly 5x3

Shot of the spray foam being started. (~2.5" closed cell on the entire shell of the building) It's about r20

And pics of my progress on first floor framing.

First buckeye game screen.. 16'x9' 1080i.

I'd like to say I was an expert with this comment.. but I'm not.... since I built the building as a pole structure (clear span trussing) I didn't think it was necessary to have footers for the walls, mainly because they don't support the roof and all it's load.. I did however go 5" thick at the load wall area, and the concrete is fiber reinforced... so... any engineers out there wanna chime in on this? Hopefully this isn't an issue since I've been in about 50 structures that have second story living areas with no interior footings...

Hope this helps...

I finally seen your posts..... Looks different online then real life.

:bounce:

I am an Engineer and he doesn't listen to me....lol Just kidding :3gears:

besides against every building code I have seen, it should work... untill it doesn't.

I haven't seen to many new construction with a second floor on 2x4 walls either... but it inside a barn.... He is going to build a house soon anyways.... and can take it down later if building codes ever make it out there.... (probably won't)

It's a hassle to set up and sell to employees and it also carries a liability. Then the company has to account for the money, pay the taxes etc. Much cheaper to give it to the scrap man. When my old company sent stuff like that out the door it had to be scrapped, no reselling from the scrap yard. It only takes one or two lawsuits to ruin the whole system.

Or that is the standard cut and paste answer by some companies. My dad worked for a multinational company that sold its unused equipment to its employees. Even company vehicles. They would collect stuff for the year and then auction it off at the local fair grounds. Big item I remember was some scaffolding that didn't meet company safety regulations but was mechanically fine and sold at the auction.

Plus I've worked for some companies that are vindictive towards the hourly staff and would rather scrap perfectly good, in some cases new in the box, items rather then let the employees "get something" from them.

Do recall when they decommissioned one of our plants they auctioned off all items but employees were told they couldn't bid.

luke,

Awesome looking build you have going. Even my wife would like something like that. She really wants a two story house:dunno:.

Something I would have considered for the interior insulated wall between the living quarters and shop would have been open cell spray foam. Would act as a sound deaden-er and help seal up leaks from shop vapors. What kind of fasteners did you use to attach the base boards to the concrete? With 5" of 'crete there shouldn't be a issue hitting the pex.

Thanks Dan,
I actually considered the open cell and this other product that I can't remember the name of for sound deadening.. though open cell isn't really a vapor barrier.. and its about 3x the price of fiberglass with only 1.5x the r value.. (budget was non existent at that point)..

And I used 2.25" 5/16 tapcons and counter sank them about a 1/2" which gave me about 1.25" of penetration.. plenty (basically just a lateral movement anchor.. and I put them in every other void (32" spacing)

Also my wife actually loves the new place.

As promised here are some pics of some different spots of insulation in my building.. just shows how awesome sprayfoam is.

1st: shot of the metal just outside the front door of my building.. yes.. :willy_nil -44.5° F.. its flipping serious outside. ..
2nd: inside of the glass of the front door. 39.4°F
3rd: same spot as the first shot.. just on the inside of the 3" cc spray foam 57.2°F
4th: center of one of the 2" insulated garage doors 47.7°F
5th: one of the joints of the garage doors.. yes thats ice pushing through (50mph gusting wind straight on my doors tonight) yep.. 19.3°F
6th and final shot.. the current air temp inside.. 65.3°F  :rocker:

Been working in the garage tonight in jeans and a t-shirt.. building window jams..

I'll throw some pics of the radiant line temps in a few minutes. It's the girlies bed time..

That's great... My outdoor thermo is reading 0 deg F at the moment... Hadn't thought about shooting the outside of our metal shop with the infrared temp gun. Ill do that in a bit once my two boys fall asleep. :)

Holy poo... just filled the wood burner.. outdoor temp now -10°F. Shot the metal again... it hit this before going to an error code. :shocking: . it's ridiculous outside.. dangerously cold..

Also. Interior of the garage has climbed back up to 66.5°F. She's trying to reach 70.. wind is howling right into my big doors.. loving this building..

Ps.. that makes a 136° difference from metal to inside the spray foam.. beat that fiberglass guys..

That's crazy! This weather is crazy. I am in DE, but 6* now. I was away in Puerto Rico for Christmas and new years with the family. We all want to go back! Although, I missed my garage too much. Enough that I went out across the yard to go see it this am. Lasted 30 seconds before running for the house...

I've become a huge proponent of closed cell foam insulation, especially after using it in a basement buildout. We had a 1.5" minimum thickness sprayed in, and followed with blown in cellulose out to the studs. This newly finished area is by far the most comfortable room in our home. And the quietest.......

Our HVAC guy had me a little concerned about whether we would have enough supply and return registers, but he was spot on as to what was needed. And it has also helped with keeping the area above the new area more comfortable.

Every month when we get our electric bill (we're total electric), it makes me wish the whole house had been insulated this way. Pay it now (insulation) or pay it later (utility).

Yeah, it's been dangerous cold out.. on top of that we just came out of our level 3 snow emergency.. rediculous.

Totally agree.. I did however do the entire thing in spray foam.. My first electric bill was $110.. that's my heat / light and daily use though.. wood is the way to go if you have access..

Well.. I've gotten those house 99% done I'd say.. got some window jams to paint up and a few bifold doors to install and I'm ready to call it quits.. We've been extremely happy with the house for over a month now! Here's a quick pic or two of the new kitchen counter tops I got in a week or so ago.. :) the wife is very happy.

also a little woodworking I did on the backs of the cabinets for the peninsula part of the counters. Rough cut maple I had left from I soft maple tree I cut down out of my back yard of my house in town (it was dripping sap on my camper roof.. ). The wood was a ***** to plane down, but it's such pretty wood I think I'm going to leave it natural. ;)

I know another guy like that, me! Luckily we took lots of pics and were able to drill the floor behind cabinets and split the loops in half to 500 ft each which is ok with a high head pump and slightly high water supply temps.

I have a friend that has a 60x80 with boiler heat in the floor. The guy installing the loops ran a 1000' runs before returning to the boiler. This was about 6 years ago and his system won't work. I don't believe your outside temperature is -70f!

That would be record breaking for the lower 48 states! The record in Canada is -83f. You have a low cost meter and it is out of range.

The Slowski and Sims5 are kind of WTF. You can't get the flow necessary for that size of heating job with 1/2 pex in the supply lines. I'm not an expert, but, the supply side should be at least 1" or larger to get the necessary flow.

Well.. it's been awhile since I've been on. Been in the new place for almost 2 months now. Had a few kinksto work out.. and i been trying to clean out my old house in town (renters move in on March 1st). So I haven't really done much to my garage.. Other than host a few nights of drinking and playing cards against humanity. .

Wood burner has been awesome now that it isn't -15° out. I don't even fill it at night anymore. It's amazing how well the floor holds heat. Soon enough I'll get back into building my garage area up and arranging all of the junk we've assessed from the old house. Stay tuned!
