Zkling---That's a nice little clamper, you've got there...

I recommend "Arrest-Me-Red", if you decide to paint it...

Ya Dun Gud, Bubba!!!

Thanks  What does "Arrest-Me-Red" translate into Rustoleum colors? If that is sunrise, or safety red, we may be in luck. I was contemplating a nice bright blue with polished letters. Because well, I have that on hand. :dunno: Although it will be no summertime avocado. ;)

Zkling: helluva job saving that abused vise. you have talent when you use your tools that is for certain. just a quick question if you have epoxy or glue will the Electrolysis take that off too? i'd say paint unless you are going to continue to fill the holes or wax it up and use it.

Thanks, but it is not done yet ;) Hi nickle filler on order. The holes in main body are going to bother me otherwise. As for the epoxy in the electrolysis tank. I really don't know. I would imagine it would be like paint removal via electrolysis a very, very slow process. Had I not had the chemical stripper, left over and on hand I would have used a hot caustic dip. The vise didn't have much if any rust on it, just layers, upon layers of paint. Pulling the nut out was a bear as it was sitting in what I believe to be un mixed epoxy. Think of dipping something in a jar of honey then pulling it back out.

Today seemed like it was going ot be a bust for estate sales but i still ventured out into the world and was able to pick a few "little" gems for myself.

The best find so far was the little Paramo No.1! It has 3" jaws and is a few pounds under 20lbs. Apart from the rust, it looks like it was never used, just ignored:beer:

The next little one is the 1st of 3 Wiltons i found this morning. One is getting cleaned up right now and the other is waiting at a friend house.

This 3.5" light duty has some overspray on it but is really clean and ding/damage free. I should have it done by Sunday.

The last set of pictures is somewhat of a more unconventional vise i found but i still wanted to try something new so here is how it turned out. I'm still planning on replacing the diaphragm, if i can find one and the foot pedal needs to be repiped with new hose, but its in great shape!

Bigcaddy, I think your table is better than balane's stump. Don't get your finger in the way of that last one. :yikes:
You had better luck than I did, drove an hour for a cracked Wilton that I passed on.

Didn't see the turkey, but I heard it outside. Too busy drooling over the "good" stuff inside.
He has one or two nice vices in the shop.

Mike
Enjoyed you visit, did you mention we fit a set of 8 x 1-1/2 jaws on your Japanese vise the ERON 200 mm. The ERON is a nice vise and accepted the jaws like they was made for them. Turkeys showed up after you left.

BCaddy, nice score, starting to fill the second wing in your Muesum. When are you going to open those doors. I want a ticket.

Picked up a few Wilton's (600s-$150, C-0-$40, 930-$30). All need new paint but thinking about keeping bare metal since 1 I'll be more apt to use them instead of being dolled up and 2 the surfaces they are going are bare metal.

Excited about using the 930 as it's my oldest as it was built 4/42.

I found a long forgotten vise in a slightly less forgotten workshop, and this seems like the right place to get feedback and/or suggestions.

Both sides read "Howard Iron Works, Buffalo, NY." The sliding jaw is cracked but the lead screw still functions- heck, it's still shiny with grease. Thoughts on repairing/replacing the jaw? As well, anyone know where to find more information?

RR, as you know the outer casing is cracked. It's also missing one jaw on the std jaws, and two on the pipe side. the pointed part is missing two bolt on Vee shaped jaws. they would have serrated teeth like the opposite side and straddle that single jaw.

Is it some thing you can get free? Or is it for sale? If the latter, what are they asking?

Robot,

Nice find. I've never seen one of those before. Info on Howard Iron Works isn't quite as easy to find as some of the other old makes like Prentiss or Parker, but you can find a little by digging around in google books. Here's a link to some info from 1897 that may refer to your vise. In talking about Howard Iron Works it references universal combination vises and the "Combination Pipe and Metalworkers vise."

Can you post up more pics including the base and how the vise connects to it?

So I had a chance to look at my Athol a little bit more this morning.

The vise weighs 2.6 pounds. it is a 1 1/2" vise.

Here are a few more pics, including one beside an iPhone 5 for scale. All in all it seems to be in pretty good shape for something that was manufactured in the 19th century. I was also able to get the clamp screw freed up with just a little bit of pressure and a drop of oil, so it is now completely functional.

Was just given this vise by an old friend. It is marked on one side:

Wards Masterquality Malleable Iron

Not sure what the wedge shaped piece on the anvil is for.

Anyone have any info on this vise? I see that a couple of guys here have one of these... Couldn't find much on the Interwebs...

That little wedge like piece is a hardened steel cutter called a hardy. Most true anvils have a square hole and circle hole In them to accept different types of metal forming inserts

I had thought that might be what it is. I'm assuming its a Blacksmith's vise... The friend that gave it to me did a lot of old time blacksmith work as a hobby.

I hit one sale this morning and found out 10 minutes prior to start they had a sale yesterday:sad:

I was about to leave when they let us inside and i was able to buy this little guy for 25.00 along with 3 other woodworking vises in various states of disrepair.

The C. Parker No.203 has some rust and missing the swivel base lockdown bar but it in otherwise excellent conditon. The jaws have one spot of damage and thats it. It was not used much and it shows:rocker:

I finally got my Wilton! After countless hours going to yard and estate sales with no luck (guys routinely show up hours before the scheduled opening time and raid all the tools) I found this one. Every once in awhile I see one on craigslist but they are always completely refurbished and the sellers asks for much more $$ than I want to pay.

Saw this unrefurbed one yesterday, called the number which was disconnected, so I sent him an email. He called back this morning and I went and picked it up. I didn't get it at a "you ****" price but I paid a below local market value so I'm happy.

After talking to the guy about cars for awhile (I drove up in my maroon '67 Camaro, he smiled, opened the garage door and uncovered a maroon '66 Corvette - 427 w/Muncie rock crusher) we found out we had lived in the same area about 200 miles south of here and knew some of the same people. Small world.

Anyway, here is my latest acquisition to add to my un-started project pile, which is growing very large thanks to all you bad influences; Wilton 8400 HD bullet vise. 4" jaws, everything operates smooth as buttah, a few dings but nothing major.

Another picture of the Howard Iron Works vise found in an old workshop that's been in my family for generations (so, no, it's not for sale, sorry). Upon further investigation I found on the end of the pivot mount it says the patent has been applied for, so there's no part number to search for.

The only thing about it I don't think I could repair or replace on it is the sliding jaw, on account of the crack that splits it clear in half, any input on what to do about?

Coop, that's a Cool vise. I wouldn't do any real blacksmithing on it, but for a gunsmith or jeweler, it would have been great back in the day, and could be again with some cleanuup.

BC, you absolutely ****...

Carl, Nice find! Enjoy it!

Robot, better pics of the battle damage will help us help you, , and I'd like more pics of it in general. Watch for the missing jaws as you dig...

wonderful vise BigCaddy! I really like the art deco style.

I was able to get some free time this afternoon so i could put the finishing touch on my Craftsman 05191 fixed base vise that has a born-on date of October of 1950

It might need a bit more work and one replacement screw but it looks great in

That's embarrassing, I thought I had attached a picture. I have several more pictures on my good camera I can put up when my computer gets back up and running (I'm on my phone right now).

ps; Doug: what jaw size is that No 1? I have an Athol No. 10 that is a bench mount swivel (center bolt through the bench and a big wing nut on the bottom..) NO pat. date, and no info I can find on when mine was made. Mine has 2-1/16" jaws. I posted it about the 5th of April.

I would love to see the No. 10. I can't find it in my catalogs. Here is a page of old and new model numbers for Athol Machine Co.

Thanks taumac!

I plan on using it for gunsmithing Outlaw. Looks to be the perfect size and I love the anvil portion of it.

Doug, I'm loving the scale of that No. 1! Very cool, even with the battle damage!!
