If you put that in your shop, you have to turn in your man card.

Not if you fill it with beer and ice.

I secure the tools to an insert that slides into the front of the bench like this.

Thanks for joining and sharing, that's a very cool setup!

I think many of us have thought about making some type of "modular" system for tools, and so far the simpler and cost-effective method seems to be the 2" receiver and step plate. However, your setup adds a nice dose of finesse to it, and still looks pretty simple to build and replicate. Very nice.

Home Depot sells some peg board in 16 by 16 inch sections. I built some frames for them to add some extra storage opportunities. The Husky wall cabinet is also very nice, I chose it over looking at the Craftsman stuff.

I'm just looking at some wall storage systems like Fastrack, Proslat, etc

Any consensus on which are better choices?

Here's my meager contribution:

I had a short section of wire shelving, and found out that it was perfect for storing and organizing bungee cords:

Here's my idea for getting two bikes in the smallest possible area (they don't get out much, so easy access isn't too much of an issue)...

Hi guys, I'm new to garagejournal. I joined specifically because I found this thread. I love the ideas and had to subscribe. Here is mine. I built a bench that I would need to use a lot of different things which would have to be secured but didn't want to bolt things down to the bench so I couldn't use it for anything else.

I secure the tools to an insert that slides into the front of the bench like this.

Then I store the tools I'm not using along the side of the bench like this.

[/IMG]

When I want to clear it off to use a nice clean flat work bench I just slide in a blank insert.

The system works great. Any time I get a new tool I need to mount I just make a new blank insert and tie it to that. I use this stuff for reloading but it works just as well with bench grinders, bench vise, etc.

I was thinking about making something similar to this for some of my metal tools. The way your's slide in to the front of the bench is awesome. I might have to borrow this idea.:rocker:

Here's a pegboard cabinet that has about 22 sq ft of storage in a 7 sq ft footprint. It's in the "pegboard storage" section of Plans Now (online)

Here's a bigger version of that in Adam Savage's workshop mancave :)

Those may (or may not) be Adam Savage's storage bins. He has a big shop, and there's probably room for several systems. That said, those are definitely not the ones that he is most known for having, and that have been widely discussed. His main storage system is composed of Sortimo cases in a Sortimo rack, as shown in this video:

For a while I was hating the dirty box with the aerosols etc which was always a mess.
Today I had the right idea.
Here (Europe) most beer ist sold in return bottles which come in plastic crates which neatly fit 33cl or 50cl. bottles.
I used an old one for 50cl. bottles. Most stuff fits neatly. I only still have to hang it on the wall (simple hooks) so I can stack my oil cans on top of it ;-).
I do not know if you can find them in the US too (most beer I saw there was sold in cans in boxes).

(yes Alfa is a brewery over here, as an Älfa Romeo nut it had to be this one)

That looks good but do the spray cans rattle and roll around when you open/close the door? Usually those racks just hang over the door, but did you screw this one in to keep it from moving?

Installed a spray cans rack from a 20$ shoe rack. Holds 36 pairs so 72 spray cans.

Thanks for the idea again!
I got mine at Bed Bath & Beyond tonight. Mrs. LS6 thought I had lost what was left of my feeble mind when I asked her to go there. She always has about a million discount coupons to that joint...

and.. repurposed bunk bed, keg / wash tub, and propane pole heater "top"

The bunk bed / overhead storage also has my 5' step ladder, and is where we store our corn hole boards, banquet tables, and outdoor umbrellas during the winter, and the pool cover during the summer.

The keg / wash tub was hard since it didn't have a handle to hang it from, so using hook eyes worked well.

The top to the pole style propane heater could have been wedged behind a workbench or tool box, but it is out of the way and away from potential damage stored bolted with wing nuts to the ceiling.. One can also see the bicycle hooks holding my sled too.

And a bit less glamorous &/or exciting... recycling bin management (the three bins represent the changes in refuse haulers in my area since we've lived in this home...) Putting it on top of the Ames garden cart makes them mobile when we need to work on cars in the garage..

I forgot too..the middle picture, one can see the disc style snow sleds that are often problematic to store.. They too, are being held up with the hook eye solution..

Not necessarily "up" on my walls but I did these a few weeks ago in preparation for some new equipment that I have ordered. I needed to get my metal stock under control as it was strung everywhere. I cut some 4" PVC at different lengths, capped them and mounted them to a 3/4" square tube screwed to the wall. This keeps them spaced out away from the wall the same distance as my base molding yet still allows the PVC tubes to sit on my foundation and support the weight.

Behind my disc/belt sander.

Some longer one mounted behind my drill press.
vgciq.jpg

I hope this will help me to keep my metal stock organized as well as help me to keep a better handle on what I have and what I need when I get low. In the past I had metal anywhere I could store it and when purchasing metal for a project I kept overbuying in fear of running out in the middle of a project. As stock gets smaller/shorter I will move them to shorter and shorter tubes until it gets completely used up.

Mike.

Mike, Excellent idea for long stock.. Fortunately, I have basement rafters to store my materials like that. The ones that don't fit, go into a repurposed library card file.

You may have taken care of your CO2 fire extinguisher in those pictures already, but if not I took care of my smaller one as follows in the pictures. Not fancy, but effective.

Cheers
