Swap it out for some Chinese HF vise... see if he notices... :lol_hitti

Just came across this Reed 108 at work :

Mechanic said they were throwing away the vise and bench when he started, so he grabbed it for the shop.

He has two Morgans in there, too, but they're buried in the back.

I told him if he ever leaves and doesn't want it, to give me a call.

Is this mechanic for real? If I was him (and my guess just about anyone on this thread), yes, you would have seen it, but not at the work shop, in my shop

Riddle;

Sitting on a park bench there is Santa Claus, an expensive lawyer, a cheap lawyer, and a Reed 209. A gust of wind and a $20 bill blows by the bench, who gets off the bench to pick it up?

Answer;

The expensive lawyer, the other 3 are figments of your imagination. :D

Joe: at the prices you've been paying for most of those vises (and I've been keeping track), just put them all on a pallet and i'll send you a Paypal that includes shipping so you can be done with vises. now what are you going to do?? :D

Dan: you can honestly tell your friends you have seen a really big vise. i can't believe he is using it without a bolt in the back foot because that little clamp isn't attached and wouldn't hold it down if the front jaw were pulled out. thanks for the picture.

All: so can anybody on here pass up maybe a 30 year old vise new in the box for a reasonable price? i couldn't and it looks like it might be missing a piece of the clamp or is it stock. Craftsman 2.5 inch clamp on vise. any idea of age?

Drives - that's a nice little clamp-on. Yes, it looks like the pad at the top of the screw is missing. It was probably a stamped sheet metal disk that was peened onto the top of the screw. If it was peened too lightly, then it may have popped off, or if clamped on an uneven surface the angle could have pried it off the screw.

It may have looked something like this :

I always thought that want and need were the same word.
You mean I have a choice ?

Naw, that can't be right. :headshake

:lol_hitti

"Needs" are like food, shelter, beer---etc...:D

"Wants" are like a good woman, a Reed 209, another 5198, an air conditioner in your garage---etc...:beer:

So, Grasshopper, you see there is a difference...:lol:

This weekend I was working on my reed 204R. And saw this stamped in the side of the dynamic jaw. "346"

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1410822968.955413.jpg

Is that a manufacture date of March 1946? Any other ideas?
Here is the full vise if that helps.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1410823057.305324.jpg

Thanks.

I thought the same as you at first. My 204-1/2 has the number 257 stamped on the static and dynamic jaws. Based on styling, the vise was made long before 1957. My thinking now is that these numbers were stamped to keep matching parts from getting split up during the assembly process. :dunno:

I got one about 3 weeks ago for $4 I was amazed that the red Craftsman paint was near perfect.

^^^ This... I have a bunch of Reed's and a couple I've found matching numbers on both halves. Sometimes people or companies will stamp a number on them too, either testing their stamping ability or for inventory / asset number. Today I was putting my Reed 2C back together and I noticed a large "N" inside the slide at the very back... I've never noticed that before and I have no idea what it means (but now I'm going to have to inspect all my Reed's to see if others have it). It seems the more you look at them, the more little oddities you will find that have no rhyme or reason.

To be short, there are no date stamps (AFAIK) put on them by Reed...

B100: those are awesome and don't you already have another pair or was that just Outlaw's that were posted the end of last year? nice find.

Joe: so did you need that Emmert? i really wasn't keeping track of your vise scores, but you have had a lot of you **** deals the last few months. if all the pieces are there and it isn't cracked or welded you did well finding that rare one.

Jake: thanks for the description of the missing part and the fix on my new old little Craftsman vise. i guess i can buy that piece or grab one from a broken clamp. is that Fretter's wine colour on that vise you posted a piece of?

Cool. Post lots of pics when you get home. I can't believe that was on craigslist for a week before you got it.

Was listed as large old vise. The seller who is a VERY skilled machinist just didn't know and I wasn't telling him. He's owned it for 20+ years. He also has the cutest little Bridgport he is going to sell. I better save my money.

I want to thank everyone on this board who assisted, pushed, cajoled and threatened me into buying this thing. I hope it doesn't turn out to be a pig in a poke.

It says 108 but notice it has a swivel base!

Outlaw posted one last year and EDGAR also has a set. I had been seeing them in old trade magazines, but didn't expect any to still be around. Then Outlaw and EGDAR's posted theirs and I had a new vise quest. I did find another ridiculously cool vise jaw set a few months back.

There are a few other vise accessories I'm looking for, but I'm not posting anything unless I find them. Less competition is good.

The last generation of heavy duty Reeds used a common casting for the swivel and non swivel versions. The square spot after the 108 was to stamp an S for swivel or N for stationary. That was how the catalog listed them, although I've never seen one that actually had the letter stamped on it.

My 104-N has the "N" stamped in it... It's real shallow and thin font, you have to look at it *just* the right angle...

Just finished this Parker 87 that was in great shape to start with.
Paint is Rust-Oleum Hammered Black.
Anyone know what year they began making this style of 87?

TO ALL GARAGE JOURNAL VISE NEWBIES:

I've noticed a lot more of you posting here, and I'd like to say the following: If you haven't purchased a vise yet then GET OUT BEFORE ITS TOO LATE and end up like me...

Months ago I was clueless, happy and thrilled to have a nice quality Chinese vise on my workbench, but then I found this site and Vises have become an addiction.

By way of proof please examine the attached picture closely. Here is a cart that I purchased and restored this weekend so I had a place to put all the vises that I am in the process of restoring. This is NOT all my vises mind you, these are just the ones I'm currently working on.

Oh and then there are 4-5 more I'm picking up this week. My neighbor called and he has a Parker 104 he wants $20 for. Do I want a Parker 104? No. Do I need a Parker 104? Absolutely NO!! Am I going to buy a Parker 104. You betcha!!!:lol_hitti

So in conclusion, run from here as if you were running from a Ru Paul blind date before it is too late, RUN:willy_nil
Your experience is almost exactly the same as mine... Because of this site i have not only bought my 1st vise A Rock Island 574, but just got my 2nd vise today! i cant believe how lucky i got, scoring a Wilton C3 for a steal of a deal. Pics will be posted as soon!

Yes. Thats a picture of the Modern clamp-on I just did in my project post. It's not a Craftsman, so the actual part you need may look similar but slightly different.

Wilton C3 vise i got today. Still in the car; much too young and beautiful to carry it inside this late. Looking at the forum i did not see to c3's that had solid face jaws with screws from the outside. Of course missing the swivel base base, but i think they are still available?

What a great thread, I went through most of it the last few weeks at work. I picked up a Morgan vise last week on craigslist. It was a little rough but the price was right.

289c2fc8b2618ca34f829359fd3c2612.jpg

I immediately took it apart and got it soaking in vinegar.

77f4268240557db5b8b503f0e2e62fe4.jpg

After it soaked for about 24 hours the container I had it in started leaking so I went ahead and used some stripper on it.

4fdeb84d37a638eb3cddf980d281b89c.jpg

After the stripper I ran the wire wheel on it and got it cleaned up. Time for a victory drink.

This is why one of the jaws was missing in the pic above.

781687f9475728fa6f06cbf747cb7b20.jpg

While I was waiting for a time to repair the jaw I got some polishing done.

d49623b488d9b95242811fb981390108.jpg

I picked up some 4130 bar stock, pinned the jaw in, welded and ground the welds down, I think it was a pretty good repair. Thats my dads anvil, someday I will steal it from him.

Time for primer.

And then color.

Finally re-assembly and detailing.

Sorry about the long post but this is a great thread and I am glad to finally be a part of it. I have the vise bug now, I am already looking for a wilton bullet. Thanks for looking.
