Joe, there are 4 vises in my garage now.. and before coming on here there was only ONE!
Need is so, so, relative...![]()

Just came across this Reed 108 at work :
Mechanic said they were throwing away the vise and bench when he started, so he grabbed it for the shop.
He has two Morgans in there, too, but they're buried in the back.
I told him if he ever leaves and doesn't want it, to give me a call.

I always thought that want and need were the same word.
You mean I have a choice ?
Naw, that can't be right.

My thinking now is that these numbers were stamped to keep matching parts from getting split up during the assembly process.![]()
I got one about 3 weeks ago for $4 I was amazed that the red Craftsman paint was near perfect.Joe: at the prices you've been paying for most of those vises (and I've been keeping track), just put them all on a pallet and i'll send you a Paypal that includes shipping so you can be done with vises. now what are you going to do??
Dan: you can honestly tell your friends you have seen a really big vise. i can't believe he is using it without a bolt in the back foot because that little clamp isn't attached and wouldn't hold it down if the front jaw were pulled out. thanks for the picture.
All: so can anybody on here pass up maybe a 30 year old vise new in the box for a reasonable price? i couldn't and it looks like it might be missing a piece of the clamp or is it stock. Craftsman 2.5 inch clamp on vise. any idea of age?
I thought the same as you at first. My 204-1/2 has the number 257 stamped on the static and dynamic jaws. Based on styling, the vise was made long before 1957. My thinking now is that these numbers were stamped to keep matching parts from getting split up during the assembly process.![]()
Cool. Post lots of pics when you get home. I can't believe that was on craigslist for a week before you got it.

B100: those are awesome and don't you already have another pair or was that just Outlaw's that were posted the end of last year? nice find.![]()
It says 108 but notice it has a swivel base!
The last generation of heavy duty Reeds used a common casting for the swivel and non swivel versions. The square spot after the 108 was to stamp an S for swivel or N for stationary. That was how the catalog listed them, although I've never seen one that actually had the letter stamped on it.
Has anybody see this before?
Your experience is almost exactly the same as mine... Because of this site i have not only bought my 1st vise A Rock Island 574, but just got my 2nd vise today! i cant believe how lucky i got, scoring a Wilton C3 for a steal of a deal. Pics will be posted as soon!TO ALL GARAGE JOURNAL VISE NEWBIES:
I've noticed a lot more of you posting here, and I'd like to say the following: If you haven't purchased a vise yet then GET OUT BEFORE ITS TOO LATE and end up like me...
Months ago I was clueless, happy and thrilled to have a nice quality Chinese vise on my workbench, but then I found this site and Vises have become an addiction.
By way of proof please examine the attached picture closely. Here is a cart that I purchased and restored this weekend so I had a place to put all the vises that I am in the process of restoring. This is NOT all my vises mind you, these are just the ones I'm currently working on.
Oh and then there are 4-5 more I'm picking up this week. My neighbor called and he has a Parker 104 he wants $20 for. Do I want a Parker 104? No. Do I need a Parker 104? Absolutely NO!! Am I going to buy a Parker 104. You betcha!!!
So in conclusion, run from here as if you were running from a Ru Paul blind date before it is too late, RUN![]()
Jake: thanks for the description of the missing part and the fix on my new old little Craftsman vise. i guess i can buy that piece or grab one from a broken clamp. is that Fretter's wine colour on that vise you posted a piece of?
That's a really cool small vise. I like it.Joe: at the prices you've been paying for most of those vises (and I've been keeping track), just put them all on a pallet and i'll send you a Paypal that includes shipping so you can be done with vises. now what are you going to do??

Nice job you've done on those two vices.![]()

It's a trans-swiveler!![]()

Mpower, nice job on that Morgan. More details on those great repairs should be posted on the vise repair 101 thread if you get a chance. And try to keep it away from woodpeckers from now on.![]()
