Need help on ID of this Cylinder for repair

This is a 1973, give or take a year. I have the original manual and parts list, but no date, no receipt, so I cannot remember for sure which year I got it. Craftsman 1hp, 12 gal tank, 100 psi. I added the handy box and double pole 30 amp motor rated switch (set up for 120V but can be converted to 240V so I used a double pole switch in case it ever gets changed over.) Its been holding 100 psi for months now. Use it only occasionally now that I have a stationary shop compressor. 6.4 cfm @ 40 psi, 5.4 cfm @ 90 psi, it came without the belt guard, an option at the time, before they found out that stupid people used air compressors. I never had any little fingers around it so I didn't worry.

Charles.

Allright I know this was an old post but- I need help on the mod. # or ID of this cylinder. Sears needs the model no. and all I can find is one on the tank. The motor was replaced a couple of yrs ago so that tag doesn't apply. It appears to be the same as this pic above but I do know mine is a 2HP.

Works OK but leaks oil and probably needs rings, reeds, seals, etc. So should I take the cylinder to a machine shop and just see if they can re-furb it? I think i could do the overhaul if I just knew where to get parts. Any Ideas? Thanks for any help you can give.
here's a pic of it I do think the tank was MFG. 1976.

page 110 in that PDF ;)

Thanks rickhigginshtbr! That was very helpful. Much more than the SEARS people on the phone! I also found a pic of one just like mine on the ole internets and the guy posting happens to mention the mod #. Then I was able to trace it back to the sears website finally! :rocker:

Parts are available so looks like I may start a rebuild.
Thanks again for all your help.

I just picked up this 1976 Sears air compressor. It's in very nice condition and has been well taken care of. As far as I can tell the major components are all original. I was surprised to see the plastic belt guard still in tact and also the original sears water/air separator.

I also purchased two older Bostitch nail guns with it along with a good amount of hose.

Re: Late 20's early 30's wall - quincy compressor w/ briggs stratton on it.

This 1 had electric motor original but converted to June 1934 briggs stratton 1 1/2hp gas engine. I was told is was gas station used back in the day. It sat in a lean-to next to the building and shed door locked up at nite. Electrobrazed and riveted tank, other than engine i think the rest of it with plumbing is original. Is that a water accumulator with petcock on there? I posted tag, can some nail down what model it might be? Diamond shaped logo decal not legible. thanks 4 any help.

Quincy model 230 single stage roc 5 from the early 1930's. I recently rebuilt the pump with rings and rod bearings. The pump was originally on a binks compressor. Its now mated to a new tank with 3hp baldor motor. Its the oldest i have seen by far and is not pressure lubricated but rather uses a oil slinger ring.

It is a Quincy before they were Quincy. That is awesome. I wonder if Quincy will have records going back that far. Call them and see.

I made many calls trying to find parts. the best they could do was get me something with a roc of 13. an industrial supply co in my area actually let me look around for parts they had laying around.

Does anybody have any specs on an old Devilbiss type 5014-3 compressor. The pump tag reads
A 2000
FE
The guy I got from says it worked good until the motor went out. I have a new motor and belt for it and will end up painting it also. Just looking for any info I can find for part availability.

I grew up with this compressor in 70-80s at my fathers gas station. When he sold the business around 2000, I didn't know what happened to it. I learned last month that my BIL had it stored for years and not being used. He was kind enough to let me have it:

How it looked:

photo2-2.jpg

Tank build is 1957.

I took the homemade belt gaurd off, inspected the cylinders & valves, made a repair to the centrifigul unloader, hydrotested the tank & painted:

The motor is a 5hp which is more than the 3hp that Curtis recomended.
The calculated speed of the compressor is 500 rpm, which explains why this thing ran so much for so many years and still isn't wore out. It also helps to keep noise down... it is so much quieter than the Quincy QT 5hp 60 gallon compressor I had before.
It may be a bit lower cfm than other 5hp compressors... but that is a trade off that is more than worth the long years and quiet operation this configuration has given!

The one on page 1 is a Refrigerator compressor attached to an old zinc coated water tank!
We had one when I was growing up for blowing up tires.
Took a long time but was better than a hand powered tire pump!

Newby here....love this thread.

Recently acquired this vintage dayton compressor. Runs great and is very quiet. Doesn't seem to have any suction right now though. Think I'm gonna strip it down this week and see what kind of seals I'm gonna need.

Any ideas on the age of this thing or info on what sort of setup I'm looking at inside.

I'm guessing that it's going to be good for tires and not much else considering the 1/6th hp motor.

Re: Late 20's early 30's wall - quincy compressor w/ briggs stratton on it.

I've got the big brother to wrenchguy's Quincy! Bigger all around (3"x3-1/2") but identical design. Bought it filthy, tore it down, cleaned it up, made some new seals, it works perfectly. It's waiting for a new forever home... the compressor head ONLY is for sale, PM if interested.

The Quincy people couldn't offer much by way of support- except to say it's probably from the 1920s, before they even put model numbers on their machinery. Right now it's sitting on a 75 gallon propane tank from the 70s, and it's powered by a 3/4HP Craftsman motor from the 40s. It's a beautiful mutt. It makes that low chug-a-chug I remember from service stations whenI was a kid, and it doesn't break a sweat charging that tank to 135psi.

The next 'incoming' project is the Kellogg 321 I bought. It was another craigslist mutt that was only $40.

Here is an old Chicago Pnematic compressor that ran our production line for 20 years until we closed our business. I'm now trying to sell it BUT I have been asked how many CFMs it has and I don't have any idea. I think it's from the 1950's ?
I was hoping someone here can help me....

I have this Ingersoll Rand Model A 1738 That I picked up for $7.00, can anyone tell more about it. It runs like a top. cant read most off label on tank but does say at the top ingersoll rand and the motor has the ingersoll rand, New York tag. any info, value anything...please. I have never seen such a small tank, or is that for something else and was it on a larger tank at some point.

I have the same compressor, but on a larger tank. The tank on mine has a 1936 build date on the tag. It was mounted on the wall in our garage as early as I can remember (1960's) and it still runs well. It takes a long time to fill the tank, but I see on the spec sheet I found that they were rated for 2.7 cfm - not exactly a lot of air. Other than doing a tank hydro test and updating some electricals it is original.

Hey guys, first post here! I've recently found myself flipping through this thread trying to find info on my recent compressor acquisition but haven't been able to find anything so I figured I'd join and just ask.

So here's what I have, see attachments. The motor is a Westinghouse type FJ single phase 1/2hp 1725rpm. The pump is the unknown here. There are no names to be found anywhere in the casting, only the number '18' in 3 places and the letters 'FWB' cast in a small raised triangle. Hopefully someone can tell me a little about what that means! There is a small tank on the unit, it's underneath. It's very small. This mystery unit runs and does put air in the tank. I have not put a gauge on it to see how much it builds but I can tell by plugging the outlets with my fingers that there's pressure building.

Anywho, any help would be greatly appreciated. I've enjoyed looking through all of you all's old beasts and look forward to any info fellow tinkerers can provide! THANKS!!

I use this 1953 Devilbiss gasoline powered air compressor almost everyday. It was issued by the U.S. Navy to spraypaint battleships. It is powered by a 9.2hp Wisconsin AHHD engine. It is hand crank and starts in 1-2 cranks everytime. The tank is 22 gallons, and charges up to working pressure (120psi) in just under a minute. The compressor head is a 38cfm Devilbiss 432. It is a very stout compressor head. Total weight on the tag is 1050lbs. It is 100% complete and in original working order (I have the original muffler, but it is extremely loud). I have scoured the internet and have never seen another set up like it,

Youtube of it running:

This is my 1957 Johnson Electric 33 gallon air compressor with a Quincy A-4 pump. The original 3/4hp Dayton electric motor burned out, so I replaced it with my 1906 1.5hp Wagner Repulsion Induction motor. It is definitely built to last forever and then some, but at 7cfm it takes just under 10 minutes to build 120psi of pressure.

Youtube video of it running:

That Wagner motor originally powered this twin cylinder air compressor. I have no idea who manufactured it, there are no i.d. tags anywhere. The compressor is seized up, and soaking in penetrating oil. One day I plan to restore the compressor, belt it to the Wagner motor and mount it on a nice riveted cast iron tank.

Cool little freebie from an estate sale. I asked the guy working in the garage if it worked, and he plugged it in. Didn't turn, and the light above the bench where he plugged in got dim. He said, "Here, take it home with you." I did. Changed the cord, cleaned out about a pound of rat poop, spider webs, and dirt-dobber nests, and now she runs like a top. It's SUPER quiet.

Here's a picture of my restored Jet Air compressor. The pump is a Rolair k25 making 16.5cfm it's a two stage, the tank is a 60 gallon made by the buckeye boiler company back in 1988 along with the pump and 5hp century electric motor. Game plan is to sell it and buy this older kellogg model 335tvx or a champion r15 and restore them. I tore the pump apart cleaned the Reed valves and plates cylinders were in perfect condition pump runs amazingly good.

With a 7.5hp motor, it should make about 25cfm, if it is turning the proper rpm.

That's a Brunner pump. Contact Atmosphair in Markham Ontario. The little metal tag is the model number. Write it doen somewhere. They always go missing eventually.

Hey everyone, new to the site. Im hoping to get a little insight as to what i have. I have a few identifying marks but after searching and searching i haven't found much. It has "made in the USA" stamped near the base, "1200-24" (i think) on the cylinder heads, A little difficult to read its either AC, RC, BC, or PC stamped on the cylinders and heads, "220-4" also stamped on the crank side of the base and "AC-102" on the pulley.

Any help greatly appreciated.

That's a DeVilbiss. There is something odd going on with the heads though, there should be two large intercoolers hanging off the outside of the heads. It's either a Model 432 or 445, depending on the size( 432 5 - 7.5hp, 445, 10-15hp).

There should be a large central intake manifold for the air cleaner to sit in, and another discharge manifold directly under it which outputs just behind the flywheel. That is also a plain sheave, not the proper flywheel for that compressor.

Doesn't look like the right valves in it either.
