ditto to Tom's sentiments...

Chris

P.S. It's fun following so many other threads on GJ. The shop is open for visitors in the New Year, Rian, if you can manage a side trip with your friend.

Does the Chevy II have U bolts on rear axle to leaf springs? I recall back when they were new that they had a T bolt holding the axle to the spring & that they could break.

Mine uses "U" bolts as you can see. I do recall those "T" bolts but I don't remember the application.

Beltsville Shell Update

Here's a Beltsville Shell update.
Bob has sent it and it is now in the mail back to me. Tracking tells me I should receive it Monday. Thanks Bob! Give me a couple of days to outfit it for it's journey across the pond.
Laro13 in the Netherlands is scheduled to be the first mainland European recipient.
So far I haven't heard from anyone else on the continent so if that doesn't change, Jasper, when you're done it looks like you 'll mail it across the channel to Gingger22pm in the UK and it'll circulate among our UK friends.
Peter would you please send Laro13 a private message (PM) and give him your mailing address?

For the UK, this is who has asked to be put on the list. This is in the order I received their request.

1. Gingger22pm
2. Seagoon
3. MisteR Tee
4. MG David
5. Armour
6. bazzateer
Craptain- Andrew you mentioned you might want the book sent to your UK residence rather than here in the US. You would be #7 after Baz is done with it. Once it works it's way down the list you'll have a better idea of when and where you'll be so keep me posted where you'd like it sent. You'll be #1 once it comes back to the USA if you want to wait.

If there is anyone else on the Continent or in the UK who would like to read it, please let me know now and we'll schedule you in.
I am anxious to hear from our European friends and see what their reaction to the book is.
For those of us in America it's a somewhat familiar theme that I'm not sure has a European counterpart.
If you want a peek into what it was like growing up in America in the late 50's through the '60's from an automotive enthusiasts point of view, BS really captures the essence of it with a Corvette theme running throughout.

I would think Beltsville Shell will land in Europe within a couple of weeks time. Get ready gentleman. :bounce:

Earlier (when the book first surfaced) in the posts about the Beltsville Shell you mentioned that you didn't want it traveling out of the US, but now that it's already been (inadvertently) to NZ, and is about to go to Europe, can Down Under go on the "interested list"?

I'm sure I could relate to the story, and am interested anyway, so, if it's possible can I go on the list?:dunno:

Lyndon when we first started the traveling BS I didn't think those outside the US, or North America at least, would be all that interested.
What I didn't realize at the time is "car guys" are universal.....and then it went on a walk-about in NZ.
When that happened I thought about having it stay in that part of the world and do a tour of Australia too but it came back to me before I could get that organized.
From the great Aussies I've met at the Bonneville Salt Flats and all the enthusiasm I'm seen here, no question we should do that. :)

Here's my proposal, when it finishes it's tour in Europe it'll come back for another swing through the US.
Once that backlog is taken care of I'll send it Down Under.
As such Lyndon you are now designee #1 or on the pole position when it arrives.
Mind you that will probably be several months from now.
Fair warning to all our Aussie friends, here's your opportunity so start to queue up behind Lyndon!

Awesome Corvette! Long time lurker on this thread, but not sure if I've posted before, I love the work you've done on this place, transforming it into something better than it ever was while keeping a real sense of the history. I'd love to visit one day. I'd also like to put my name down for a read of Beltsville Shell when it heads down here if I can.

Hello metalhead140, not sure if you've posted in before or not but a warm welcome to you just the same.

The Corvette coupe is a really nice piece...

...even better than I had originally thought.

I'm going through it right now doing routine maintenance on a car that has been lightly used over a several year period.

The previous owner had always used Moble 1 engine oil in it so I'll continue with that for now.
Besides engine oil, all the other fluids should be replaced too, cooling, brake fluid, power steering etc.
It has DOT 3 ( US Department Of Transportation specification) brake fluid presently but I'm considering switching to DOT 5, silicon brake fluid.
Long term I like DOT 5 operating characteristics and use it in several of my other vehicles including the other Corvette.

Belts and hoses will all be replaced as well. They look perfect but they're 17 years old now and should be replaced.
I'm a big believer in preventative maintenance. I'd rather catch a problem in the shop than have to deal with it on a roadside.

As it stands now metalhead140 be #3 to read BS, after Lyndon and Nursepeter1973.

As an update, BS arrived back in Philo today safe and sound.
Tomorrow's weather is promising 4-6" (10- 15 cm) of snow here and I'll be ether shoveling or snow blowing for a few hours.
Day after all that fun I'll take the book to our local Post Office to get Postmistress Susan's suggestions on the best way to pack it for safe overseas travel.
It should be on its way by weeks end.
The inside front cover is pretty full so Jasper you get to start on the top of the back inside cover.
There are now 27 readers, 12 different states and 3 countries, to date that have signed off on it.

Again thanks to Mike Oberst for starting the traveling BS. ;)

I have to ask since it has been a while. What is the latest on the new house build?

MacTexas that's a fair question. With the economy still not where is was pre 2008, especially the real estate market, I made the decision I wanted our existing home sold before I will be willing to proceed with the new house. I didn't want one or the other sitting vacant.

Soooooo our present home has not sold as yet and Chris and I continue to enjoy living in it. I'm confident it will happen sooner, rather than later. Can I interest you in a well cared for and loved 105 year old home?

Thanks for your interest. With luck you'll be seeing sawdust flying around here one of these days. ;)

FYI - I would never make a test long enough to include a ?#55 (not only for the fact that it's too much work to write a test that long - even a test over War & Peace doesn't warrant that long of a test!). Rest assured that all of you following along with us for the long term will have nooo problem with the eventual "evaluation". It's all in the daily preparation.

Hi Thomas,

Sorry to be so late in replying, I was away at New Year.

I've just sent LARO13 my address by PM and told him to read quickly! Looking forward to BS1 arriving in Scotland.

If Seagoon can PM me we can start talking about how to move it on once I'm done.

For better or worse...

...Beltsville Shell 1.0 has been sealed in a zip lock bag, boxed in a box and...

...sent on it's maiden voyage to Europe. Here Philo Postmistress Susan is affixing postage before taking responsibility and ushering it into the United States Postal System.

Jasper it's all up to you now my friend. If the 2 boxes are opened carefully they can be reused multiple times. The book itself is secured in a ziplock bag in case the boxes get really wet. All these packing items are reusable and highly recommended. If the outer box gets badly mauled it might need to be reinforced with clear packing tape. Let's hope the postal systems of The Netherlands and Her Majesty in the UK are up to the task. :dunno:

Enjoy gentleman, it'll be a fun read.

I was just catching up to the goings on at TCOTU.
Post #8274 brings up a question.
Without searching for a closeup view of the switch,
Are the screws clocked to the switch plate, or to vertical ?

It's like a recurring nightmare that just won't go away. It just keeps resurfacing in this thread over and over and over and over and over and over and....................:willy_nil

Chris - This has got to be on the test.

The only thing better would be questioning why Thomas didn't powder-coat the plate.

The infamous switch plate has taken on a life of its own; straight out of the Twilight Zone at the Center of the Universe!

Perhaps powder coating it might banish a few of the demons lurking about.

Bonne Chance with that!

Maybe a new approach to clocking screwheads is in order here....

Why, these practically clock themselves!

I'd be very surprised if they weren't clocked, I don't remember looking at them up close while I was there but seem to remember a post from Thomas showing they were in fact correctly clocked.
On another subject I've been making some progress on The CMB (Cabinet Makers Bench) Thomas was nice enough to let me restore as well as the HaSPHS (Heavy as Sin Powered Hack Saw). Here is a picture of the CMB as it sets now, I'm trying to find a very large board to replace the center piece that was beyond salvageable.

New Test Material......

Fast work JB, thanks for posting the pictures and the update. Looking very nice indeed. Also congratulations on the nice, new acronyms. We can't have too of those here can we? Chris needs all the test material she can get!

BTW, I might point out...

...yes, of course the WCSP- (World's Crookedest Switch Plate) or PRAPSSD-(Poor Retired Airline Pilot Skill Set Display), whichever you wish to call it, does indeed have clocked screws :)

In fact, if you look closely, even the...

...MLPS-(Mast Lightning Protection Systems) name/data plate (that's for the lightning rods...

... seen on the roof)- located below the WCSP or PRAPSSD has clocked, phillips head screws. I might even further point out that those itsy bitsy, tinny weeny, screws are PPC (Proudly Powder Coated)! :rocker:

Re: New Test Material......

I should have studied this more closely when I was there.

But if you study that photo....is the switch plate crooked? Or is it level, and the old siding, split on the doorway end, as hanging down slightly?

I think we need a photo with a level to know for sure.
