That ACME vise has got to be good. That is the brand of everything that the cartoon "Road Runner" used on Wiley coyote.

**: did you paint that vise gold so the guys know which one to break if they are using the vise for a tough job? how did you make the jaws? your shop has some really nice steel tables so may i ask what your business is?

1. Sometimes were Special, and we do Specialized Boiler Serving(ing). 2. Sometimes we crane stuff around. 3. Sometimes we build **** for the hell of it. 4. Sometimes we make models. Why not. (Vise was painted gold because I had a can leftover!) 5. Most of the time we build the best there is in steam power. 6. We deal with the other guys issues. (VAPOR power, Cleaver Brooks, B&W, Superior, etc. The customer complaint was low flow rate... I wonder why... VAPOR POWER? Cleaver Brooks, B&W...). I would list Fulton as another problem child, but we technically own them now. :3gears:

Also, to make it relevant to the thread, here's my newest vise. Welding a slip-pipe on the bottom to make it a double swivel welding vise. Using .625" SS bar, but instead of going through all the prep work and welding on 7/8" hex insert cap bolt heads on I just put a few threads on and used some SS 5/8"-11NC nuts. I like my tools like I like my women, with a bit of mass. :rocker:

I'll post more pictures when it's done. Just a cheap 4" rescue vise, 10" of 5/8" bar, 2x 5/8" nuts, 3x 1/2" bolts, and a piece of 1/2" plate cut with torch to the profile of the base.

Ok, heres my loot from Yesterday. 5 Parker bases, will fit #18-20 Parkers plus 4 swivel plates plus 3 spindle collars. Seller said they were NOS but its possible somebody cast these. Either way they are gorgeous.

Prentiss #4. Very nice original condition

Japanese Craftsman. I didn't want it but only paid $15.

Last, a wilton base. No idea what model it is from though.

Also got a nice cabinet, a 1950s delta rockwell drill press and a 1963 Craftsman all original and complete 1/3 hp bench grinder.

If anybody ever comes across a base to fit a 6" Parker please get in touch with me. I have your money ready.

Balane i need dimensions please. there is a certain amount of overlap on these bases for these bigger Parkers.a big 5 inch base might accommodate your 6 inch Parker.

Sure, this is my personal vise and I've been looking for a swivel base for it since I got it. The base has a 9" diameter and the swivel bolt holes are ~7" apart. Here's a photo for posterity. Thanks.

Edit: A more precise measurement is 9 3/8" diameter for the base

I promise to never use the swivel. I just want it so the vise is complete and also, in its present mounting location, having it raised a little bit would do wonders for functionality. I'm tall.

The vise has no cast in model number and came with no decal. You can see the provided information in the photo below. Doing a little searching I'm fairly confident it's a 976A so I made a sticker for the other side that fits into the recess where the original one resided.

Thought I'd show off my newly painted and new to me Record 112 vice :)

Also thought I'd show a vice I bought a while back which I can find very little reference to anywhere on the internet.... A Dohm Wilson vice with a rotating jaw. Thought some of you may find it interesting or perhaps even know something about it. :)

OK Balane, hmmm...i don't think that is a 976b/a. Ive attached a pic of my 976B from the same period and it is different. Much larger anvil I think. mine weighs in at 176 lbs. I'll poke around a bit for more info.

VA, you HAVE to get Roadrunner and Coyote decals for that, and make sure the "ACME is highlighted! :rocker:

KM,---I think that Wilton did some contracting to various hardware companies along the way.---How much?---Who knows.:dunno:

As long as the base fits it I don't care if it's a Parker No. Monkey Poop.

Very nice collection VA, how many own a Acme Bullet. I would love to see the casting process and which method Wilton used.

Finished this one tonight, a 88-1/2 Parker. Nice job on the 976A balane, I noticed the jaws on the A's and B versions are made much simpler. This one I finished tonight took me many hours of fitting, having no gaps and keeping the jaw faces are pretty time consuming. That straight top shelf on balane's is how they should have made the old guys.

As always Kevin, that's amazing. Best jaws ever imho. I almost wish mine would wear down so I could buy yours. Pity they're in such nice shape. :)

Thanks balane, you know I really do not enjoy making the Parker jaws, just to many setups. But when I see a set of jaws all jacked up and the vise in great shape then I feel I must help because I can.

Getting ready for the next batch of vises, these are in the 6 to 7 inch range. I do not know how to out gas the castings since they are to big for my stove or grill. I have to figure something out.

Cwazywabbit, welcome to GJ and nice Record! What is the jaw width on that monster?
It has a 6 inch jaw width and they claim it is unbreakable due to being made of SG iron ..... I'm sure some animal will have broken one somewhere.

......

CW: i love that quick release Record and that interesting little Drill press vise. also welcome to the forum and you came armed and dangerous into the vise thread. any more vises to share or do you have a small vice for vises?

I didn't think I had a problem till I went out this morning and dug them all out (oh and I have one on it's way to me as well! An abused record 36)

And finally (I think) my Parkinsons Model F 'Perfect Vise' No 7 which is the one that does all the hard work at the moment :)

Looks like I have a bit of restoring to do! Hopefully I'll be moving house in the next year or two so I've been collecting vices for the new bigger workshop .... errr, at least that's what I keep telling myself ;)

Just remembered there is a Record No4 lurking around somewhere ....

CW: nice collection. you don't have your location in your profile, but i'm guessing UK or where do you have all these nice old vises? welcome to our group and like i mentioned you'll fit right in. Problem? i think not and after you find your missing Record vice which one are you looking for that might be on or under someone else's bench??

Yep I'm in the UK.
One day I will get myself a Record 114 vice, similar to the 112 but with an 8 inch jaw :) They don't come up for sale very often, I do know where one is but the owner doesn't want to sell it ..... Maybe an earlier 112 as well, but I think that may be a little greedy ;)

Wouldn't mind getting another Parkinsons 'Perfect Vise' as they as far as I can tell are the vice everyone else over here copied. I will clean and repaint my current one, I think it should be a crimson red BS381c 540 but I'm not sure.

EDIT: Just to add this is the vice I'm awaiting delivery of, a Record 36 that looks to have had a hard life .... Hopefully I can get it looking smarter and working properly :) It's another of Records SG Iron vices so should be worth trying to fix up.

CW: it's good to have a White Whale so to speak on your radar for a lot of things so dream big and or rare and it might happen. I really like the old Record and Parkinson vices, but we don't see them over here much just like you don't see many big Reeds or other old US old vises in the UK.

since you like the old tools you might check out the new vintage tool section that Garage Journal just created. again welcome to our group.

Thanks for the welcome sir :) It looks really comfy here so I'm sure I'll feel at home.

You are right it's quite rare to see American vises over here, I shall keep a look out for them.. Could be a nice prize for my collection.

I'll take a wander over to the vintage tools section now .... it's so good to be among fellow addicts ;)

CW: have fun learning and if you might know a bit more on a subject we are talking about in a thread please add your thoughts.

VA: now i see what the Coyote was missing. he seemed to have dynamite, anvils and trophies from Darwin, but narry a gun.

did you look to see if that Acme vise has a date stamped on the slide or is it buried in your glorious pile of gems now?

KM: Awesome job again on those Parker jaws. are you still needing the owner to send you their Parker vise so you can custom make them or have you found a better way now?
