Jake, no swivel base, look at the notched bench up front. Nice isn't it?

You're right, I missed that.
I don't see any mounting holes to bolt it to the bench, so I'm thinking this is one of the old older vises that use the single bolt through the bench to mount it.

Tell your friend to remember to pick up that pipe jaw sitting behind the vise or it will get lost.

I'm thinking it's an older Columbian, missing the swivel base. :dunno:

That IS odd, and if so, with the notch, it ain't swiveling. A certain Old guy needs that one!

That thing's a beast. Are you sure it wouldn't be easier to ship it ? :lol_hitti

The truth is , it's about an hour away from my daughter. Two fold reason for the trip. I was heading that way for a visit and thought I would check out CL along the route... Who does that??? I may need Vise-a-nonymous .

Joe: that vise might be a Reed pre C series vise with those pipe jaws and probably the mounting bolt from underneath. it's probably a deal and it is unique so grab it and all it's parts if your friend doesn't see any welds or cracks.

Topop: if that vise checks out you'll be smiling the entire ride home with it sitting in your trunk. at less that $2 per gallon if gas prices can stay like this i'm hoping to make a few road trips this spring and summer. You are in Vise-aholics anonymous so if you want to register no need and just tell us if you want to start buying less than 5 vises a week. ok?

**: great answer and just checking.

Hot: i agree even if it's an hour if that is a weld it looks like a good parts vise unless there is a foot of snow on the ground to make the drive miserable.

ALL: so i started moving parts over to my neighbors today to build this welding bench that i'm going to make hitch mounts for vises and found out most all my steel i was going to use as the supports is stainless and he doesn't know how to weld stainless. any thoughts or should i just go buy some steel or trade this in. how valuable is 1/8 inch stainless steel tubing compared to regular steel? thanks guys

Drives: just find somebody with a tig welder or a spool gun for their mig and it should be no problem. You could just weld on flanges and bolt it to your plate top as well. Shoot me a PM and we can discuss options.

Why do you need a spool gun to weld stainless? Spool guns are primarily used for pushing soft aluminum that likes to bird nest in a MIG machines feed rollers.

There are a bunch of different alloys of stainless. Unless it is stamped, it is mystery metal.

I have welded stainless many times with er70s-6. While not the correct wire it will work. With the correct gas and wire, stainless can be welded correctly with a MIG machine. TIG is not required.

I would get a36 and a500 steel and save the stainless for other projects.

what method does he have? if he can weld steel he can weld stainless, just means setting up correct setting 4 the method he uses.

B100: if you can't find that cool Desmond of yours maybe our super searching vise thread guru VA can give us a post # of one or more? i think I've seen a couple, but i thought they were Parkers.

ALL: thanks guys for all the great comments and ideas. as most of you know i don't weld yet so Mig, Tig and types of wire are terms i'm still learning. i'm guessing Stainless is actually a bit more expensive that steel so maybe i'll keep it and use if for something i want to weld myself in the future.

anybody in the Seattle or Portland area have a great place to buy steel because i also need material for my hitch mounts? Thanks

Drivesit---I stick weld stainless steel with a stick welder and good quality stainless steel rods.---To me stainless is three times as smooth and easy to weld as plate or pig iron.---It's clean and accepts current real good.---Leaves pretty circular beeds, fuses excellent.---I've never tried tig or mig, on stainless, but I suspect they would be even easier if a person new what they were doing.---Makes for nice shiny work that stays shiny.

VA: again thanks for your super searching ability and yes those vises are very cool looking. i can't imagine what a 420 pounder would look like on my bench, but damn i want to find one so i can see it there. maybe a non member will join that owns one so we can see a picture of one instead of a catalog page?

funny Stevens isn't on our Vise Repair 101 company list and I also put Desmond with Stephans because i own a few of them (or did). i just sold my Desmond Simplex S61 with it's 6.25 inch wide jaws to a member here that already has it's 150 plus pounds mounted on his 900 pound bench.

here's one i may have posted that is a Simplex Coachmaker's vise.

Drive---Here is a couple of Stevens Ratchets, but not Desmonds.---I am not sure what Simplex you are referring to.
Here's one stationary and one swiveling B.

I almost went and bid on a similar vice the other week, but resisted. It was too far away to justify travelling for what would have been a curio. Only sold for a tenner, (around $15 in your money), if I recall. Had the large, old style wingnut on the bottom too. Would have cost me five times that or more in fuel for collecting it though, so I passed.

Switching marques, I should hopefully have another couple of York's here within the near future, so I've sated my lust for the moment. :D (This is from someone who wasn't supposed to be buying any more vices unless it was something extra special :D).

JOE: welcome to Vise-alohics anonymous and nice job on that little vise. as said before you need to BEE careful hanging around us because only a few of us can keep from buying every vise they see for sale.
