I hate shovels with concrete on them. It makes them unnecessarily heavy. The friction keeps them from digging correctly. Why in the world anyone would allow concrete to dry on a shovel I will never understand. Especially if you borrowed the shovel from me.

I have also been spoiled by self igniting propane torches. Push the button & they burn. Very convenient. I dislike using a spark lighter ever.

Letting someone borrow my proffessional grade tools that I spend a significant portion of my paycheck on and getting them back covered in grease and oil.

Even worse is when they set it on the top of my clean toolbox covered in grease and I get to clean both the tool and the box.

Losing tools is one of mine as well, but also, I hate it when people hammer/wail on tools that aren't designed for that. If I let another tech use my tools they had better not hammer on my wrenches, sockets, extensions, etc.

Having to pay for them. It just ain't right I tell you. Considering if I didn't have a hang me down between my legs, I could spit kids out all day long and collect welfare right??

Well I think the government should provide some form of subsidized program for us tool whores, I think it only fair, right??!! :bounce:

Alright, you dudes with no sense of humor just put down your pitch forks and torches, it was only a joke............well maybe :tard:

Borrowing without asking, not returning, leaving them dirty.

Also, when people look at my shop and say, "you got it setup nice in here" with a look on their face that says, "awe that's cute, he likes to play mechanic". I want people to admire my shop for organization and cleanliness. I'm 20 years old and I despise being talked to like I'm a small child. I sure as hell don't know everything, but I'm passionate about my tools and what I do with them.

Having others here call them inferior.
Some mechanics require the best possible tools to gain advantage.
Some mechanics have the advantage of being the best with any tool.

Now that you mention it, someone judging my tools is a pet peeve of mine. Good quote there.

That and borrowing my things without asking.

You forgot to add that some mechanics are just tools.

I do hate it when I have tools that break, especially when I really need them.

I like to find the best tool for the job. Sometimes they cost a lot, sometimes they are cheap. Do I spend too much on certain tools, of course, but when other versions have let me down, I opt for the best I can afford.

My foreman has jokingly called my matco box "gay" multiple times because it wasn't a snap-on box. Pissed me off a bit.

Whatever man. Being in the field, I've seem everything from snap-on boxes that are twice my age to brand new cornwell boxes. Ive felt the drawers and latch systems in all of them. I've seen the finishes on all of them. My dream box is a triple bay matco 6s in silver vein. I love my box and I have no problem being the only dude with a matco box in my shop ;)

I travel for work now so I hardly touch my tools anymore. My impact sockets grow more rust every time I see them. *****. Good thing they are just craftsman (USA).

The tools that really get to me are those that just lay around and make no attempt to return to where they belong...

when people don't put tools back where they got them from forcing you to have to waste time hunting down a tool

pet peeves... ok lets start the list...

1. misplacing a tool, if you took a picture of my tool bag at work today and a year from now, you'll see everything in the same exact place, and if something is different, its either gone, or replaced with a new tool that has its spot.... everything in its place.

2. cleanliness, i have done some seriously dirty work, look like a coal miner when you're done work, but i hate my tools being dirty when i'm done. while i'm working is no problem, i'm fine with that. but when i'm done i want them clean, even my power tools get a wipe down, everything goes back clean and neat.... i absolutely cannot stand reaching for something and getting a handful of grease when i haven't torn anything apart and i don't know how some people do that.

3. it irritates me when people grab a tool without asking, especially right in front of me. people think you are a loaner cart just walking around. i've had production guys grab my fuel drill off my cart and attempt to walk off with it only to turn around and ask "can i use this for a second i just need to drive a few screws" and the answer is always a big resounding "No, not since you grabbed it before asking, even my kids know better".

4. when people see that you have something made in taiwan and instantly think that its china... no, it's taiwan, and taiwan makes good tools also, so does germany, and japan, and italy.... the US is not the only country that makes good tools, don't assume i own junk because you have no sense

5. unorganized box. my box has to be organized, wrenches all together (including adjustable), pliers all together, etc etc. box needs to be clean also, hate having a torn up dirty looking box. how on earth do you get a dirty box? the only thing tools touch is the top and inside the drawers, the rest should be immaculate 24/7 because nothing touches those other parts. it completely eludes me how somehow has worn the paint off the middle left corner of the box with what looks like 10,000 scratches. and now it has a rust spot.

6. incomplete sets. i can't stand having incomplete sets, i've spent 75 on two sockets that got left at a previous job by accident, just to have them in the set. and i knew i wasn't going to need them for another few years most likely... but it is now a complete set again.

7. losing a tool... i've spent 2 hours looking for a tool before, granted i was being paid to look for it. but i would rather spend 2 hours looking for it than put it in the order book to get a replacement, i liked that one. and number 7 goes with number 3 as well, i've had people grab a tool from my cart and not tell me, then when i came back and reached for it it wasn't in it's spot, so i proceed to go back to every job i've done in the last 2 days that i used that tool looking for it only to find it on someones bench a day later and they "have been meaning to get that back to me".

there is probably more, but i'll just leave this here for now.

I guess mine would be having a mix of tool brands. My socket and wrenches are everything from SK, Craftsman, Gearwrench to some HF.

I'm currently working on completing an SK SAE wrench set not because I need them (I already own wrenches from 1/4 to 1-1/2) but because they're not all SK.

I once dropped a socket in the grass while working on a buddy's '68 Camaro. I never did find that socket, and had to go buy a replacement. And to add insult, that supposed "buddy" sold the Camaro without ever asking me if I wanted it. Although he did give me a '67 Camaro body for helping to get the '68 going...(sold it for $50 to get it out of my yard. Been kicking myself ever since.....)

I feel you there I want a silver vein cart so bad. But I am getting tired of people calling my harbor freight stuff junk. Guess what I just built a 8.8" ford on top of mine and I have a mx-5 aisin grearbox on it now waiting on bearings. Yet you are afraid to set tools or more light weight parts on your snappy box because you might scratch it.

Same goes for box mods. My HF cart and box both get modded to my taste.

Eventually I will have a Matco cart.

**** em man. At the end of the day, what matters is that you're completing your work safely, professionally, and in a timely manner. If you can do that with Harbor freight tools, who cares?

We all started somewhere and sometimes the master techs like to forget that they didn't come out of their mother's birth canal with $100k worth of tools.

The mindset that tools is what makes a mechanic.

It's a way of problem solving, tools and working environment. And lots of experience.

I have friends who buy a mini toolbox and call or text me day and night on how to solve their issues. They cant understand it takes more than a starter set of tools to fix a car. And that removing rebuilding and installing an automatic transmission is not an easy job just because some self proclaimed internet expert said so.

Insomnia, or the inconsiderate downstairs neighbor has me awake so.....

My list of things that may prompt a swift bear paw to the back of the head are.

1. Yes my tools are clean and organized, dont ask if I use them. If i didnt use them I wouldnt have them.

2. Dont ask to borrow my tools.

3 Dont complain about how much I spend on my tools, remember rule 2 when you dont have what you need.

Rebuilding a trans is the one thing that I am scared to do myself. I think it's because we rebuilt one in the shop I worked at in high school and they sent us the wrong reverse band. 3 times.

Not caring at all about tools. Putting away dirty, if at all, dull tools, rusty, etc. Just spent 2 days getting everything ready at work for spring. Shovels caked with mud, bent edges, cracked handles. Mechanics tool kits scattered all over. Only 1 of 10 trucks had a complete kit in the right spot.

Tree rigging gear on the wrong trucks.

Such a waste of my time especially since everyone gets paid to keep things neat.

Losing a tool and then spending days looking for it. Giving up and buying the replacement. And then you as soon as you get home with the replacement you find the first tool sitting in the most obvious spot. I swear to god it happens everytime. And not just with tools either.

I know that feeling. It's happened to me twice with SO metric sockets. $14 for a single socket and 20 minutes later I find it under my bench or in the wrong drawer. At least I have some spares now lol.

I'm going to go against the grain slightly here.

My father. In a good way though. For years he never said a word about me using anything I wanted. Just had to be put away and not dirty. Now he thinks he has to ask to borrow something. Hell no. I would proudly repay that favor of his years of generosity.

Similar to the concrete on a shovel rant, I hate any tool that's been covered in paint and not cleaned off.

I have maybe 2 or so

I hate watching toolbox tours or seeing somebody's drawers in their box and they Have a drawer full if loose random sockets!! Organize the damn things.

I also hate seeing a fancy triple bank snap on box only with half the drawers half empty and filled up with stupid **** that shouldn't be in there. A toolbox drawer should not have nuts and bolts in it.
Stop wasting ur money on such a nice box only to fill it with junk!

Why are my 16 month old snap-on sockets shedding chrome like it's going out of style, but my GearWrench, Craftsman, etc are all totally fine.

Why does everything slowly move towards the back of the drawer? I have so many punches taking up the back 2 inches, and free space up front.

Why do I have SO MANY TORX BITS!!!!

When you're doing a big job and before you know it you have what seems like the whole tool box on the floor. Drives me crazy, so at the mid point or after taking apart I do a tool inventory. As far as somebody bringing a tool back dirty, only once. You bring it back clean or don't use my stuff again.

That makes me chuckle too, big tool box used as filing cabinet and parts bin. I keep tools and that's it w/ exception of test modules that I keep in a old roll around cart just so they're locked up. There's so many guys at work that have nice boxes and they are filled w/ papers and nuts and bolts. I got a 2 drawer filing cabinet and a old set of lockers to keep that cap in. A lot less then side cabinets for my box lol.

When I was younger, my Dad had his tools clean and organized. At the time I had no idea how much good tools cost. I'd use a wrench or screwdriver and just put it back anywhere. He'd go *******!!! For the longest I couldn't figure out why.

As I got older and started my own tool collection, my step-son would do the same thing I did when I was his age.

I think it's my Dad's revenge on me...

Not having enough tools and not being able to afford more. Also, not having the right tool mid-job and having to stop what I'm doing to go to the store where I inevitably spend more time trying to figure out what the best tool to buy is, and if i need to get anything else. Lol

Your post reminded me of a major gripe. I used to be a medium sized electrical contractor. I out fitted every truck for its intended duty. I'd show up on a project and say go grab THIS only to hear, well so n so has it. So one day I completely lost it and had everyone come into the shop, and strip the trucks. I then made a itemized tool list including serial numbers for every truck/man and had them sign for it. The statement included a responsibility clause in the event of loss, which didn't mean **** in real life, but they didn't know that. But I also explained to them when I send a truck out, I know what capabilities they/it could perform. And not having the right tools not only impacted the project, but their bonuses at the end of the year. That whole ordeal that cost me a couple days of down time for over 20 guys was one of the best things I ever did, the guys then treated MY tools like they were theirs and theystopped growing legs for the most part.
