I read this whole thread and haven't seen another one like the one I have here posted..

It says

Snap-on
Milwaukee USA

And it has the 2 embedded ball bearings to stop the socket plus the standard sprung ball to retain the socket, 1/2 drive..

Can anyone tell me anything about this piece? Where is that date code supposed to be?

I also have a 1935 1/2 drive 7/8 12pt tapered socket, and 5 or so SO sockets that just have a patent number where a date code usually is and no date code, there 3/8 drive and step down a bit where the drive goes in... Whats up with that?

Bottom from left to right
(3/8-1/2 pat no 3273430) - (3/8-9/16 date mark 1983) - (3/8-11/16 pat no 3273430) - (3/8-3/4 pat no 3273430) - (3/8-13/16 pat no 3273430)

The one with a mark for 1983 looks identical to the ones with just pat no's

The 2 impact style sockets top right are 1/2-13/16 and 3/8-9/16 both no date stamp and pat no 3273430

the top left ones are the smallest (1/4) and largest (7/8) of my 3/8 drive deep set dated 1990.

Why would they have pat no's but no date stamp?

There are a lot of unsolved questions about this, maybe someone with post the reason one day.

To me 3273430 identifies the socket as flank drive.

Did SO desire users to eliminate all the older sockets?

Here are my oldest items. An early 1936 1 7/8 inch 3/4" drive socket, a 1944 "war emergency" 1/2" drive ratchet adapter and a 1949 6" long 1/2" drive extension.

And one of the more unusual tools, a 1960 vintage 1/4" drive socket that fits the oval head screws found on older Trico vacuum windshield wiper motors.

An older ratchet that has had the mechanism replaced. A lot of the chrome has been worn off from use, cool to think of all the work it performed over the years. Not sure of the year, but it says "F723 USA" and "PAT NO 3713356" on the handle.

The year is that tiny number below the shift lever between on and off .

To add to that, many socket sets didn't have a ratchet, it was more of a luxury than a standard item. They used breaker bars, sliding T bars and speeder handles. All of these, in close quarters, would be a serious issue with a 6 point socket (still is today). 12 point sockets somewhat make up for lack of a ratchet.

I use 12 point and have only a few 1/4" drive 6 point stuff. Really cannot find a use for the 6 point.

Charles

Some of us still work on 60+ year old stuff... 6 points are a must have for those fasteners that haven't aged well (as well as a full selection of sizes, so you can use a metric socket on a corroded SAE bolt head or vice versa for a tighter fit)

In order to cover over 75 years of date codes there are many different stylized versions of each number. If you Google "Snap On Date Code" you will get the chart of all the codes and be able to match the code you have.

Here is something a bit unusual, a set of 1/2" drive square sockets I purchased in 1962. It shows that the date codes are truly manufacture dates. Even though the set was purchased in 1962 some of the date codes go back to 1958.

Thank you! I have learned an awful lot in the few days I've been here. I never realized how little I knew about tools...other than how to use them. It looks like this one isn't that old...1981 according to the chart.

Here are three pair of pliers. The needle nose and larger diagonal cutters are from 1962 and have the vacuum grip pattern but are identified only as Snap On. The smaller diagonal cutters I purchased second hand in about 1954 and are identified as Vacuum Grip, Newport, Pa. but do not have the vacuum grip handle pattern.

These are my coarse tooth and fine tooth ratchets purchased in 1963. One of the ratchets has the reverse E for 1963 on the shank. However, between the off and on there are different over stamped markings that are older. I have to wonder if these were older tools turned in by a dealer and restamped. Any insights would be welcome. After additional study I believe the one on the left is 1955 and the one on the right is 1957. Still not sure how they were available to purchase new in 1962.

Found some old sockets in the drawer of my grandfather's workbench.

SW-160 (1/2") and TW-200 (5/8), and a tiny extension S-2. Looks like they were produced between 1936-1948, the markings seem to indicate 1947 for the 1/2 inch and 1948 for the other two.

The extra "E" is during a time that the rats were returned to the factory for repair. It is a factory repaired stamp.

Thank you for the info. I did not realize that they did factory reconditioning. The dealer I bought from did his own rebuilds.

Here are some more photos. My tune up kit purchased in 1962, the remains of my 1962 screwdriver set and the companion brake shoe hold down tool, a 1957 1/2" long arm ratchet purchased in 1962 reconditioned in 1962. And my 1962 1/4" drive case. Don't look too close as many of the contents are not Snap On.

Here's the No. 4 vacuum grips and another oddity that I can't find much on, a Snap-On/Vacuum Grip 96S with a center cutter (instead of a side cutter).

Not quite sure what to call it. Engine Valve Guide Bore Adjustable Scraper/Cleaner?

I couldn't find it on collecting Snap On. Anyone see it in an old catalog?
No part number, only patents on it.

There is another one online branded Hall Mfg. Toledo Ohio, possible mfr., looks like they made other hones as well.

These were in the exchange period, where the factory rebuilt them, and exchanged them for your broke one. The E on the shaft is a factory stamp for Exchanged.

I picked up a couple of vintage sets recently. I believe this is a C-10K Blue Point wrench set. I couldn't find any date codes on any of the wrenches, but the set appears in catalogs from as early as 1936 and as late as 1946.

1936 catalog:

1946 catalog:

The wrenches all have similar wear which tells me they've been together as set for quite some time. However, the wrenches don't have all the same logo style and a lot of them don't have USA stamps either....:dunno:

All folded up for storage.

I think that this 9/32" drive set might have originally started out as an M-57 due to the inclusion of the carb sockets. There is another carb socket in this set, but for some reason it was in my pocket when I took the pics...:lol_hitti

1932 catalog:

I think for its age it's in pretty decent shape, but the set is missing a few pieces and the T-handle has a freakish break. The cool little ratchet has a '32 date code and all of the other pieces have '31 date codes.

Looks like the box is about 26-27. The tools are mixed, some early 20s. Value 200-300. could be more if the right bidders wanted it, but generally 200-300. Nice box.

My first Snap on Ratchet. It's a FV71N 1/2" drive ratchet. It seems to be in great shape. It feels really nice and sounds nice.

Then I better not say anything about the DOE wrenches and 3/8" drive deep sockets I bought in 1958 / 1959. ;)
