I think what happened with the drawings is that there was a typeo saying diameter dimensions when it should have been radius. Maybe KMS can confirm what it should have been? The picture I got said diameter and I made them to the thou of what was written, so that is all I can possibly think of it being.

And I'm sure I got the dimensions right, as I measured everything with a starrett mic that had just been calibrated with mitutoyo standards, and checked every measurment against the drawings. I was working to way tighter tolerences than I needed to as some lathe practice.

Look like diameter symbols to me?

A Wilton 825 is not a Baby Wilton like Charger mentioned . Some how we got confused. The 825/925 has 2-1/2 inch jaws. The Baby has 2" jaws and the numbers I have seen is 920 on the side. I do not think I took dimensions on a 2-1/2 Wilton End cap.

Aw man I hate to hear that! I want to get this little guy back in business!!

What can I do? I'm open to options including sending the vise somewhere

What sort of heat treating set up have you got? I deal with quite a bit of A2 and O1, and also some stainless for knives. My oven is an evenheat kf22.5 with rampmaster. I was going to get a smaller one, but the Canadian supplier only had a $150 price difference between the tiny 110v one and this, so I got the big guy.
Glad I did actually, as I have already hardened the longest thing that will fit! A2 spring hardened limbs for a roughly medieval style crossbow.

I was thinking A2 for jaws, so I'm glad I happened to think of what the pro uses!

I sold my oven, I have to many to treat every month. Got 266 jaws coming back today. Nice job on the end cap, I am sure someone here needs one for their 2" Wilton.

If you can get me the dimensions for the one you need, I would be able to make it. If the vise fit in a flat rate box, you could send me the whole thing, and I could make the cap, and the brass jaws if you wanted to. Probably not the cheapest option though.

Ahh ok, makes sense. I do lots of small batches (a big batch for me is 6 knives) so for my use an oven is worth it. Oftentimes I just have one part I need to harden, and it's really nice not to send it out.

I'm on the edge of my seat. Will he ? Won't he ? Will we laugh, or will we cry ? :willy_nil
No, it's not too early in Scotland for a drink. :beer2:

Welcome to the site. :hellobye:
From what I've heard - Dayid put a lot of work into that site. So much so that it kind of took over his life for a while. He's since stepped back and taken an extended break in order to actually have a life again. It's unclear whether he'll return to continue adding to the database. There have been talks about trying to do something similar here, but no answers as of yet.

Silver: i forgot to welcome you to GJ and specifically to the vise thread so welcome and BEE CAREFUL because if you hang around here those vises in your area tend to find their way into your garage even if you already have a couple. BTW if you want a few ideas on building a nice heavy duty and maybe movable steel table take a look at some of the pictures in my welding table thread and link is in my signature. also this vise and grinder stand thread has a lot of great ideas if you need a few more.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252799

Thank you. I've been lurking for a little while and love seeing some old stuff. I've found myself lately wanting more and more "previously enjoyed" shop tools, the wife just doesn't understand. Haha. I have cruised through your table and stand threads and like quite a few of those options. I will be sure to contribute with whatever I can come up with on mountings.

Hey Silver,

Sorry for the late post. Looks like a good, versatile collection you have.

I'm going to take a wild guess at your vises.
606: I'm guessing the 50s or 60s. Based on the overall style, squared end lead screw at the handle and the embellishments. I can't see the embellishments very well in the picture, but the "Columbian" name looks straight.

D45: I'm guessing that it was made in the 70s. Based on the overall style and the more pronounced "T" styled jaws.

Thanks for the reply. One side has a straight "Columbian" and the other side has a curved "Columbian".

If anyone is interested I started a thread on a very cool old drill press my dad and I picked up to restore in the vintage tool forum. Never seen one of these in person before!

I finally finished my first vise resto/mod. For paint I went with Rustoleum hammered black, Rustoleum Regal Red and Rustoleum Metallic Silver. I need to get my garden shed done so I can put this little guy to work. In case you haven't seen how the turd used to look I included the before pics. Enjoy and keep the old iron out of the scrapyard.

I think I'm going to start looking for a 4" palmgren drill press vise, and a 6" Bridgeport mill vise to go with the new (old) drill press. Have to see what I can find

Here is a pic of a Parker 26 swivel clamp that I just made the handle for. Anyone on here can make it. I know this for a fact because I made it and I am an engineering idiot:D. Yes, for all you OCD guys I know I need to grind one side down a little more as one end is a little thicker than the other and I still have grinding marks on one end but hey I made it before breakfast today and I didn't finish it 100%. I've been meaning to put this up and I just got around to it.

Regardless I think it is cool that I can do this with basic tools. This particular handle was made from a 5/8ths inch bolt so this is a BIG swivel clamp. Directions and more pics are on the vise repair thread.

Love the large grooved screw eye on those. I didn't know that some came with the flat blade style swivel lock, thought those were only on the pressed steel slide vises. :headscrat:

Nice pair.:D Its funny that Nick found you a 5195 because he did the same for me years ago. Its actually the same vise i have on my business cards and it sits in my office as the first 51xx vise i purchased/restored.

Autopts is like a truffle dog when it comes to good quality vises. He buys them before they get a chance to surface on the open market.

That might be a replacement from another vise. I've never seen one of those on a 519x but the vise it came from, 517x was made around the same time frame.

I don't see many yoke vises on here very much, but has anyone ever restored one if these Armstrong pipe vises?

I got it about six months ago for $20 on clist. I've used it quite a bit since then, but it does need some love.

Tacoma, I did a similar pipe vise of my dads when I was in high school. I still have it and its still got most of its paint. (It never did see a ton of use, but sometimes you just need one...)

Mine was on the machined top of the static jaw just behind the jaw insert. His was on the small machined face on one of the jaws, near the corner of the jaw insert seat.

I restored one a while back. I didn't take any before pictures, but it was in rough condition. It was so rusted up that I couldn't tell what name it was. But, I thought it turned out pretty good.

It uses a #4 wrench.

Thank you jrobb. Looked on the Bay, no 4's in sight, not even in completed listings, so figured I'd best make my own. Cut the open end off a Vlchek wrench I picked up for $1. this weekend, dressed the cut end, threw it in the press to bring the handle back level, and ground some of the chamfer off the box end. Then hit it with some semi gloss black, should do the job.
