Canukian,

Did you paint your Ernst rail holders? I would prefer black to the normal white/gray. If so, what did you use?

Don't know what he used on his but I used Rust-Oleum gloss black on mine.

My main set is a mastercraft set from Costco and it came fitted in its own three drawer box 1/4" 3/8" and 1/2" drive. I have additional sockets on rails in the empty bottom drawer plus a few additional very large sockets in another box. I've just started collecting a little 3/4" drive stuff for specific jobs like hub nuts and thats in my main box at the moment.

Lot's of nicely organized socket drawers but I am amazed at the amount of space that some of you guys have given up for many of those organizers. I am busting at the seams of my socket drawer and have them crammed in any which way yet still be accessible. The only ones I have in what I would consider oversized socket organizers are my couple most used sets so I can take them out and to the vehicle, although I seldom do.

I guess that's about as complete as it gets. 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2, metric and sae, 6 point, 12 point, impact and chrome, shallow, extra shallow, semi deep and deep. Good number of 3/4 sockets and swivel sockets in 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2.

The bluepoint racks REALLY cleaned my drawer up. I just ordered a set of Snap-on deep Swivel impact sockets too that's not in the pic. Also have a bluepoint 300something tool set that I won in a raffle that's full of more sockets.:D

I currently use an 80 Socket Organizer Tray.

but I'm thinking of changing to a separate tray for each socket size and type.
like this:

OR this:

I think I like the last option better because I can organize socket types by color.

All my sockets are GearWrench...

And...

Since I'm too messed up in the head, to tolerate empty spaces on the various "holders"...

I keep mine in the "provided-when-I-bought-them" trays...

A simple, and somewhat elegant solution to my OCD...:lol_hitti

174 sockets---SAE and Metric---Shallow and Deep---1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" Drive---with NO EMPTY SPACES!!!

And no missing sizes!!!

17 year old that just started college for Diesel Technology, and just started buying my own tools! Still trying to fill in all the missing sockets.

This was my second order, still may make another, this is the work box, some are for the home box. The cleared up a lot of space, 1/4 is in another drawer, will get some more pics tomorrow, organization is a never ending job in a tool box.

How big of a 1/2" socket can you fit on these? I go up thru 1 3/8" snap ons, and 32mm on the metrics, with a slightly more thinned wall.
Any info is most appreciated.

OK, so not a full socket set up in the fact that I dont have complete set of SAE, but Im really really good on metric. Not bad for a non-pro - I think I have more sockets than my buddy who is a dealer tech for a Euro brand. My little setup:

IMAG0050.jpg

So the roll cart is set up to contain a mobile base of pretty much any socket I would need in 98% of situations. The impacts are a combination of Sunex and Toptul, the chrome are almost are Toptul except for one rail of Matco 3/8 shorts that are a back up

IMAG0051.jpg

The tool box/chest contains the rest of my sockets - including specialty ones like flex sockets and my SAE's and 12 pointers. This drawer is dominated by Gearwrench, but has some Duralast, HF, Husky and maybe some other cats & dogs.

Anyway, this setup allows me to be equipped for 99.5% of fasteners on a modern car and like I said, for a non-pro, I think its a pretty thorough, effective, and economical setup.

1/4 3/8 drive std/metric shallow/deep 6pt/12pt
+ sets of torx short and long, etorx, 8pt, std and
metric hex short and long, flat head/philips
There's over 200 sockets in the 12x16 top tray
mhgbgi.jpg

1/2 drive std/metric shallow/deep 6pt/12pt no pic

3/4 drive std/metric shallow 12pt in a pelican 1600
they don't come out too often
2w6c9r7.jpg

All chrome is craftsman usa

Specialty
Lug nut set, Axel nut set, Sensor sockets
Spark plug set, Wheel locks and remover

Mostly sunex impacts
1/4 3/8 1/2 std/metric shallow/deep 6pt
3/8 universal std/metric shallow 6pt
I'd like to get some harbor freight 3/4 impacts
And possible some additional universals and specialty sockets
Somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 socket and counting

My dilemma now is I got the 56" top box and have rearranged by one drawer with all 1/2 metric and SAE sockets and another drawer with 3/8 and 1/4 drives. Hansens only go up to 27mm and 1/2. I've got several larger 1/2 sockets and purchased the plastic peg system craftsman has and would like a cleaner system. What have you guys found to be best for these larger sockets? Rails?

I am in the same dilemma since I have 1/2" sockets that go to 36mm . I have all rails as of right now and want to upgrade to something better. I like the look of the westling holders but don't know how good you would see the size of the socket compared to the hansen holder.

Does anyone make storage strays that fit 3 rows of sockets? Like the Hansen except for short/mid/deep?

I have been looking for awhile but I think my best bet may be using single rails and riveting them on a tray. I just hate how the pieces on those single rails inevitably move.
