Let's see your pliers racks [ homemade & bought]

Not sure I ever shared on this thread. Here's what I came up with. 2-inch thick HDPE.

Aaahh yes, the "Chronological System", new on top, old on the bottom. Yes I use the exact same system but my drawer dividers go the other direction. Actually change directions and your pliers drawer could be mine.

After putting it off, forever, I happened to be at Home Depot last Saturday, and noticed this.

$3.98

A quick check revealed the hooks hit the holes on pegboard almost perfectly. After some very slight tweeks with some pliers, voila.

HUGE space saver, now I've got to rearrange my whole workbench.

Here's mine...

Mine looks similar. Only I put a "coupler" nut on one end of the threaded rods. Once I put the "rack" in I turn the coupler nut to make the threaded rod do a press fit. I'll post pics if it's confusing.

You've been visiting my pliers rack thread :)

Isn't that what this forum is for???? to take each other's designs further.

Awhile back , a member had made pliers/wrench racks for the GJ community forsale.

I would be interested in some if you were possibly interested in making/selling them to the GJ community

I too would definitely be very interested

perhaps if we can get a few members to commit, it might make it more cost effective to make

I think I remember him saying in his tooling thread that his wife has him ******* with other projects. Although, that might have changed.

Pretty sure I gave him credit on the page linked below in my sig...

It was good idea but instead of using nuts/washers as spacers between the slats I should have just cut up some aluminum tubing and slid the pieces over the threaded rod. Really the thing could have taken as few as 4 nuts/washers.

I made a similar rack with taller slats for the hammer drawer.

What is the exact right kitchen dish holder wire rack thing that works best for pliers?

All of these homemade ones are awesome; but there has to be a commercial wire rack thing that will work just fine.

Thank you.

Bought a plastic coated wire spice rack today at Walmart ($3.88) in hopes that it would make a good pliers rack from my smaller jewelry sized pliers and cutters. Unfortunately the wires are a bit too close together (.350" to .375" spacing) to fit most of the pliers. Spacing needs to be more like 1/2".

Thought that it might work for screwdrivers and it does pretty well with them, both stubbies and longer ones with blades up to 6".

Discovered that raising up a bit also makes it work for all my Zona razor saws. Still need to find a use for the lower shelf though. BTW if you ever need a razor saw, Zona saws are far superior to exacto or any other razor saw.

Thinking about making a wall unit, something like this.......when I get around to it. It can be as shallow or deep as you require.

(Sigh). Yes, it's true, the mrs has figured out a way to make me use the garage for something constructive (according to her) instead of working on the garage. It's been a break of sorts (meaning a break only of organizational progress) but it's slowed the "what I really want to do".

Here's the deal - I've been considering making a few of the wrench trays to sell to you guys but I have some concerns:

(1) the slot widths are for the pliers I have. After measuring the variety of wrenched I could get my hands on, it's clear my tray wouldn't work for all.

(2) given the wrenches I've purchased in the past year I've found that most of my slots aren't the right length which means that my tray probably isn't generic enough to make for others.

(3) The material ain't cheap. I accept it because I'm cool with it but doubt you guys will. It's nearly thirties a foot cost.

I promise, if I sell some, you'll be the first to know and I'll do so for fun, not for profit. Gotta go, my wife says I gotta get back to work. [emoji16]

After seeing all the clever ideas, my coiled-wire approach seems pretty unimaginative.

But it works well enough for me. Leftover 10 gauge wire wrapped around a broom handle to make a coil. I first saw this idea on GJ years ago before I was a member.

End-game plier drawer. The racks are magnetic so nothing moves around when the drawer is opened or closed. They were not cheap at about 25 bucks a piece, picked them up at Canadian Tire. Each magnetic tray is bolted to the drawer and I had to cut an end off to make them look like 1 piece together (there are 2) , the top right rack is glued in.

Well, since the thread's undead, this is what I got in my roll cart:

2wn0hme.jpg

Wish I would have taken a 'before' pic. What you see there was laying flat cluttering up two different shallower drawers & the bigger adjustable, channellocks & pipe wrench used to hang on the wall.

I have the bought racks. But they really weren't very expensive and they work great. For now I have one rack in a shallow drawer and one in a deeper drawer for wider and bigger pairs of pliers.

I picked up this rack in a junk store. I think it was a rack for a bathtub. It had ends that telescoped out to straddle different width bathtubs but I got rid of them. I keep the longer stuff in the middle where the supports are higher and I keep it over more on one side so small pliers can be on the short side and longer ones opposite on the other side. In the front left corner is an organizer from a stationery store. I want one more of them for the vice-grips on the front right side. Anything bigger goes with the adjustables.
I just re-arranged all this stuff do I labeled the drawers with a felt pen till I get more familiar with where it all is.

My wife picked up about a half dozen of these racks when her store changed out all of their fixtures. f038ec8388c6e7538c56e6a5e1586010.jpgA little cutting and bending and they are working well in the pliers drawer. f8fcd23c26bbef5c6ac23afbc5a522d9.jpg

I resisted organizing my pliers for years, but someone posted a link to a pliers organizer on Amazon and I bought a couple of them. Cut off a piece from each so that I got full utilization.

Nothing fancy, just little wire baskets from the DollarTree and a wire cutters.

0528112238.jpg

Confirmed........these little ones seem to work great. They fit the drawer fine and the price is right. I picked up a few based on this thread and so far so good. A very simple and cheap fix to freeing up space and organizing a bit better. I will be getting more of these. I think they are the best value for the money. I can get a 10inch adjustable head wrench into them no problem as well as vise grips head first. My tin snips was a bit too wide head first but will go in handle first ok. Nice solution.

I cut mine leaving 1 cross section all the way across and the whole unit sits against the drawer vs putting my tool in the middle of the rack like shown here. I only put the head of the tool in which allows it to lean on the rack and i am able grab the tool quickly or place it back. It keeps the rack a bit more rigid too.

Id only go with another solution or fabricate shelving or a dish organziner if i was able to get to them for free. I cant see them working much better.

Thanks for the great idea. I couldnt get to the dollar store fast enough after seeing this thread. Love this forum.

(now everyone give me hell and call me an idiot for replying to a thread that is from 2011 because that is the world we live in now).
