Some of these racks are very pretty. Do any of you guys use your tools? My tool rack is a drawer full of pliers that does not mind me swearing at it when I am looking for what I need.

Nothing fancy, just little wire baskets from the DollarTree and a wire cutters.

You can't use what you can't find. ;)

When you have all the pliers sorted what you start doing is using the RIGHT pliers for the job, not the first ones you find that might work.

RACK??? Hell, mine are stacked at least two deep in the drawer....how you guys can keep everything all "neat & pretty" is amazing to me....I'll never have enough room in a tool box! ;)

Oh....and how your tools never show any wear..... :lol_hitti

Just realize that a lot of those on GJ buying tools are just collectors & tool polishers. Their tools will stay nice and shiny in a drawer and not see the first day of use.

Those same ones will also be asking about how to prevent those unused tools from rusting....:lol_hitti

either you made no point, or I just missed it. Are you meaning to imply that what one group does with thier tools is better than what another does? If so, which is the 'right' group?

I hear this a lot when people look in my van and see how its organised.

Then I look in their van and wonder how the hell they ever manage to find anything let alone fix any cars.

Ignore them mate, why would they be reading threads about tool organisation if they weren,t looking to better themselves.

Some folk are just programmed to be negative :)

You also need to realize not all good Mechanics are messy slobs and some value organization. All my tools have a place and all are wiped clean prior to me putting them away after the days work.

I try, I do try. But suppose some "tool polisher" who also happened to be a dipshit popped in and said "Just realize that a lot of those on GJ are just grease monkeys who work on junk all day and .... 'insert your insult here'".
Sometimes I take the bait, just can't help it.
That particular dipshit proudly assumes that he somehow represents a better class of citizen here on GJ. My point is simply that he does not.
Thanks for the reminder though, it's good advice.

a properly organized drawer allows you to fit more in it and makes it easier to find what you need and prevents you from having to swear at it

My pliers are organized by the MRU method.
Most Recently Used are on top.

The other thirty or forty pliers I own are scattered between a travel box, a small rollaway at my other house, and a dozen or so vise grips clamped to my MIG welder cart.

I am pretty fanatical about organization and presentation, as you can see from my screwdriver, ratchet and wrench drawers, and my meticulously arranged socket storage area:

Northern Tool Pliers Rack. The dish racks just didn't work as well for me as this purpose-built rack.

+ 1 on the Plyworx rack....don't know why I never did it before. No more digging down into a tangles mess of pliers.

I wanted more flexibility in my storage so I built the one below. It is made from 1/2" thick wood (it may be MDF but I am not sure) with #30 holes drilled in the right places to accept the plastic coated wire dividers I bent up. The wire came from WalMart coat hangers that cost $1.20 for 10 of them. I cut up the 10 coat hangers into 4 3/4" long straight pieces and bent them with 1 1/2" legs. The wire stands are spaced 0.7" which seems perfect for nearly any type of pliers. I set up a bending fixture on my drill press (see pic). On the top of the board I put some of that non-slip matt made for tool box drawers.

This solution made a huge improvement in my plier storage. The drawer is only 16" x 16" x 4" high so I didn't have a lot of space for the mess of pliers shown in the picture. I even have a few spots for future purchases.

Thanks. I am glad I found this site. One of the best things about it is that I can show my wife that I am not the only tool/garage crazy guy on the planet. (I was even beginning to think I was nuts myself) This site proves there's a whole lot of us out there. Some even worse than I am.

I tried shadowing and dish racks . . .couldn't make it work for me so I went back to pegboard since I have three big wall cabinets. This works best (for me) and is flexible if I pick up a few more!

Here is my secondary pliers rack, mounted on the side of my workbench.
We took a piece of unistrut and cut the front out of it, drilled 2 holes to mount to the bench and it fits 12 pairs of mini pliers perfectly!
