I just finished reassembling a Craftsman 5160.....It was in great mechanical shape....Other than cleaning in Simple Green and repainting with Rustoleum blue metallic, I replaced the spindle arbor collar and added a couple machine bushings to reduce the spindle backlash....It is now responsive in less than 1/4 turn.

HEMI: Nice looking vise. I like the blue metallic color and I usually am not fond of metallics unless its the metal of the vise itself like FRETTERS Ball Base vise. (See post 35044)

This was advertised about 3 hours away... about 10 Blocks from my brothers house :) had him pick it up, I was finally able to retrieve it yesterday. The jaws are dirty but up close they are like new.. original paint and sticker.
The old style Record swivel lock toggles like these are stout, secure, and easy to use.

Oh yeah... 30$ :)

edit: not sure why but the image is being scaled down when I add the pic..

CRS It is a very subtle metallic....The only time I see the flakes is if the sunlight hits it just right.....

Wow Joe, that is a awesome vise. It would get use in my shop on that stand, is that a 1" plate? Is the stand pretty stable?

Rev. Scott, it is a 2× 10 piece of lumber on top. The stand is 2" tubecand is custom made. It is super stable. I use this vise for grinding and drilling. I could have sold it a 100 times. It weighs 80 lbs

I'm hoping some one, maybe our English friends could shed some light on a maker . I'm guessing it's English but it's only a guess. This lil vise(vice) has the maker A. Winterhagen on the side and the word BROWN on the top. It's a bench clamp vise that looks like a post vise with no post. Seen them before but never really paid much attention to them until this one was in a box I bought at an auction today. It has a replaceable anvil pad and the jaws are 2-1/4" wide. SAE

Hemi: you can always PM one of us or put up a question in the vise repair 101 thread if you are about to drill into a vise before you do. i like McB's reason for those pins and i also thought it was holding my first swivel jaw in place and it was only rusted in place from not being moved in almost 100 years. some of the old guys didn't ever use the swivel jaw and some that owned them for 50 years or more didn't know they swiveled at all.

as far as the pin you might get lucky by taking a small bolt and pushing the pin out from down below. if it's stuck spray some Kroil or PB on it and let it soak and try again. Getridofone made a little nut and bolt sort of press to pop them out from down below up and out and he posted pictures on the 101 thread or maybe he'll post it again here.

Fretters: do tell why you decided on SHOE POLISH? is it dry to the touch? looks great in my opinion. i just saw your explanation so if you already said all you wanted to i'm good with that. or if you have more i'm all ears. cool looking vise and maybe a good working one too. easy to get CHUFFED about that vice. congrats
DRIVES I'm still planning my strategy on popping the tapered pin loose...I've done a couple heat/cool cycles with a torch and applying PB.....I want to give the jack bolt a whirl but the spindle nut is in the way and it doesn't want to budge....it appears a previous owner incased the dovetail area in epoxy, braze, etc.....I haven't spent the time trying to get the nut out as I was hoping to get the tapered pin out without removing the nut.....I will definitely report my progress.....

Jask: Nice vice, and good condition. Definite bargain there. :)

Stripper: That is definitely red. :D Like that stand too. :) Those legs make me think of the alien machines on War of the Worlds. :D

Can't recall hearing of that name before. That design does seem to be quite common though, both across our side of the pond and yours, so I'm not sure whether we both had manufacturers of those, or whether they were produced in one country and crossed the water from one of us to the other.

They are a nice, sturdy vice. I have a 3-3/8" one here, and it's a lovely thing.

Geeze joe That Milhoff is a peach. I haven't seen my brother's (MBSINMICH) Milhoff for a few days. These pix should inspire him to finish rehabbing it ASAP. Nice stand too.

Bric: that is just a pin and they can usually be punched out from below. you can squirt on a little kroil or WD and give it a few light taps and it should come out. you will need to remove the swivel base to see the bottom of the pin if you have one or haven't done that already. good luck

Thanks, Drives. It worked just like you said.

What's the widest opening vise on Garage Journal? What's the average opening that the larger vises open to? I just wanna know how my current vises, and current purchasable vises, compare to what's "out there."

You do know that asking questions like that can lead to you having the vice equivalent of ***** envy? :D

Personally, my opinion is that if your current vice does what you want, it's big enough. :D

About 30 cans of Guinness wide if you discount wood vises.

I'll have to measure my Morgan. Been using it a lot for holding parts for soldering lately. Sounds very overkill, but a massive vice actually gives more clearance and gets in the way less than a small one. Probably going to have to start oiling the bare metal more though.... Noticed a few little surface rust spots from the windex I use to neutralize the flux. Caught them soon enough that they just wiped off with an oily rag though...

Actually, any thoughts on what oil I should use to keep surface rust off the slide of the morgan? Paste was apparently didn't work too well when it got wet.
I wiped it down with 3in1 oil because I had it handy, but I've also got light machine oil, gun oil, atf, gear oil, and linseed oil.
Although I guess the best option might just be to wipe it with an oily rag every time after I dry it off. Been drying it off, just not reoiling.

Vintage,
Any oil is better than no oil. To battle flash rust (although my methods may seem ****), I do the following:

* The slide:
I now use a light coat of gear oil. I had been using Lubriplate for years, but it holds grinder dust, saw dust & metal shavings. Gear oil seems to do better. Just wipe down the slide & re-oil as needed.
BTW; For aesthetics, I apply silicon grease to restored vises that I sell.
* Bare metal components:
For the handle, anvil, & jaw faces, I apply a light coat of WD40. Seems to work for that, and I have a couple of gallons of it.
Otherwise; I clear coat these areas on restored vises that I sell, and advise the customer to apply light oil as the clear coat wears off.

* A couple of other tips:
1. Keep your vise covered with first, a large piece of cotton (an old shirt will do), then a garbage bag over the fabric. That will keep dust & moisture out, and eliminate condensation.
2. Periodically clean & re-lube your vise.

Happy Trails.

Edit: I believe ATF will damage paint.

Vintage: any of those would work, but I probably wouldn't use ATF. Johnson paste wax seems to be a common one. also you can paint the slides if there is a little room without scraping the paint off.

Bric: you're welcome and post pictures of your vise when you can.

Young: going from 4 to 6 to 8 inch vises can sometimes get us a bit off the topic. i don't own an 8 inch (vise) so can't really say what they would open up to, but i think my Parker 956 was about 16 or 18 inches with the slide still sticking out the back of the static and here's a picture before i sold it. jaws were 6 inches wide.

I have an Emmert pattern maker's vise that is 16 or 18 wide and opens about as much.

Joe: your red vise looks pretty nice on it's Kracken style stand. also i saw a sale you are headed to maybe today in the garage sale thread that i didn't see one vise so i'd pass on it and wait for another Minion to call or email you.

A HA, there are vises! Here's one, a crappy Record wood vise . Look closely at the third pic. See the bullet on the back bench? He said there are a lot of vises. He's making me a pile..

82: haven't a clue to your old vise history. it looks like it's missing it's pipe jaws and what style swivel mount is maybe the hardest one to keep in it's place unless there are a couple holes in the base for bolts.

Joe: i do see the bullet in the back on the wood bench so i guess you might have to go and maybe pick up the light shields from that cheap grinder that look like my Baldor ones.

ALL: Tourqueman2002 (DOC) just posted up a very interesting post on the Homemade Electrolysis thread about BLO self combusting and causing a fire. here's the link: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=237752

i knew a rag with stain on it could combust because one of the members is replacing his burned down old garage because of it, but didn't know BLO on a rag would.

thanks again DOC
