CB: nice job so far. happy to hear your wife was on the roof or handing up material from the ground to help. i agree that some work on or next to someone's old carpentry can be challenging and would love to know what they used for a level.

when things are out of square in a couple different directions it's hard to believe that something has settled isn't it?

it's looking great so far and thanks for the pictures. good luck on the next half and hopefully you'll have help from your bride with that too.

Thanks Drives. My wife helped me for a few hours with the panels. We've got it down to a system now. My son is working on his house that he just closed on.
Here's some pics of the trim.
Here's one of the rake trim, in progress so you could see before and after.

Here is the same corner with the trim complete, I still need to install the end caps on the gutter. I had the custom bend the rake trim to finish it off somehow, couldn't just leave it open. The 4" pvc will be connected to the gutter and it runs 20' away from the building.

Here's the horse barn I built 10 years ago, same metal roof.

CB: the roof looks fantastic. did you make your own gutters or were they part of the package and you just needed to make a few cuts and design improvements?

when you nail through the metal roof with those nails with the rubber pads do you also need a dab of silicone caulk or does the rubber make a good seal?

while the roof was off did it rain in the shop or did you get the framing and paper on before any rain so all those awesome boxes and tools didn't get wet?

what's next on the list?

thanks for sharing your build with us

Drives,
The gutters are the standard profile from the supplier, I don't have to modify the gutters, just the rake trim right above them, on the end of the roof.
No nails, just screws. The screws are Zak head screws, they have a zinc cap that covers the the rubber gasket, except for the side edges. You just run them through the meatl with a low rpm screw gun and get a slight bulge on the rubber. No sealant is used. I've had these same screws on the horse barn for 10 years with no issues.

I need to finish the ridge cap and gutters and it'll it for a while on the roof. The honey do list is calling for attention.

No raining in the shop while this was being done, we dried in the entire roof after stripping shingles.

CB: somebody was asking about a multiple grinder stand on the Block thread so wondering if you ever got that 6 station grinder table finished? or is in Kentucky waiting for you to move?

thanks for showing me the screws that you used to attach your metal roof. so is the roof, gutters and trim all done? great job

what's next or are you done for a while?

cheers

I'm updating the continuation of my roof extension. I started out last year on this, but had to replace the entire roof. Went with metal, but then I had to change my plans on the extension so it will match and be one continuous roof.

Here is the frame that will be attached to the front of the shop. It will be bolted to the first truss and also have 2" square tubing supports anchored to the slab.
Purlins will attach to this frame.
Clamped up to be welded. This is the connection at the peak, the tab with holes will be bolted to the truss.

Epoxy primer coat.

The nuts will be welded inside a 1-1/2" square tube and this tube will be threaded onto 3/4" bolts tht are embedded into the concrete slab. A 2" square tube will slide over the 1-1/2" and be plug welded. This will be the connection at the slab. The 2" will be welded to the purling frame above.

The black bolt is just my "insertion tool" ( bet we hear from Tampa now). The nut will be welded around the end and also plug welded.

I'm done with most of the steel fab, just need to primer and top coat the paint.
Today I added the clips that the aluminum channel will bolt to.
This is the 2" x 4" tube overhang. I cut the bottom at a angle to remove the square corner.
f34f6f5ade0a9c2ea285f9cdac52071e.jpg

1/4" x 4" clip, and cut to to close up the end of the tubing.

All welded and flapped dissed out.
bb4b492bb7a61958bea77d1e9039f384.jpg

Got to use this beam clamp to convince the plate in place. Wish I had more.

Here is the frame that is on the shop end of the roof. All 1/4" x 4" flat bar, bolted to shop frame with 1/2" bolts. There will be 2"x2" post to tie into the slab, mainly for uplift.

Finish coat of paint on frame and brackets for purlins, one side of purlins done. Would of had all done but ended up working half day Sat. Trying to locate a Cat radiator. Industrial wind chimes. ( Purlin brackets).

4" aluminum channel for the purlins on 3' centers. It's so hot here I had to use gloves to handle them. The washers would be too hot to hold after setting out for about 15 min.

Since I was by myself, here is how I rigged to measure from bolt hole to bolt hole. Every single bolts went in with minimum of adjustment. I almost fell off the ladder from shock.:D
ac42dedf8ccb2a7d55cf932fcfc94e47.jpg
Used two 1/2" galvanized structal bolts at each connection.

Finally shade!! Put up almost the one half of sheet metal yesterday. What a difference. Had to down a couple of beers under it before rushing off for a family gathering.

Awesome thread with tools and fabrication, two bbq's and a roofing job with crane.... NICE!

I'm was wishing I had a crane to mount the 1/4" x 4" flat bar on the wall. The wife and I did it, just barely. You wouldn't think it was that much, but up in the air, it changes quickly.
I still need to drill out for the bolts to attach to the building, just have bolts I had on hand.
Only one BBQ , just rebuilt the one in the photo. I can now cook in the rain!
Thanks for looking.

Top notch workmanship on the build. You couldn't pay someone to build it with that much care.

Thanks Andy,
Took a little while to get there. I'm happy with how it's turning out.
Just want to get done so I can work on projects IN the shop instead of projects ON the shop. That and the wife has a list.:lol_hitti

Half a roof better than no roof. Watching it rain again. I'll have a all weather cooking spot before too long.

WTH Doing it all wrong..... ? Feet must be above parallel and don't see beer in hand. LOL

That's as high as they go. There is a beer in my hand for sure.

The other half is up.

Here is the tie downs at the front wall of the shop. I embedded 3/4" bolts when the slab was poured. These are sq. tube with nuts welded inside. A 2" sq. tube slips over these and is bolted.

Here is the top of the 2" sq. tubes, welded to the frame.

I used 1/2" x 10" galv bolts to tie into a couple of the 6" wood post.

CB: has it stopped raining long enough for you to finish the roof? Looks great so far and it should be a nice spot to work or have a few beers.

Drives, it s stopped raining, but I'm still not done. A good day or two should have it . Other things around the property have demanded my attention.
Did you see the anvil I picked up?, it's posted in the anvil thread.

Nice roof extension. Looking forward to more updates.
Gulf Coast Supply? We have one in Leon and Wakulla County. Are you west coast or panhandle?
Kentucky is beautiful until it drops below 40 degrees. A good friend lives near Overton.
Lastly, some ribs like that sure would be tasty at a car show, at a car museum, in December.

CB: i looked on the two anvil threads i know of so if you posted in garage sale section i don't know if i'll find it because that thread runs pretty fast and has a ton of posts.

post it up here and plenty of pictures and information if you have any. also if you have any questions just ask. i'm not an anvil expert by any means, but i've owned and sold a few and know a lot of guys that work on them correctly.

cheers

Thanks Shorty. I used Gulf coast out of Wachula county, they were great to deal with, had the best price too. I'm on the west coast, two hours south of Tampa.

We've talked about dragging the grill around, I just don't know if it'll be road worthy by Dec.

Nines, it is nice, can't belive how much diffrence it's made, just wish I'd done it sooner.
Once I out the center cap on, I don't think it's hardly rained.:lol_hitti

I'll get a lot of use out of it.
I have a big Columbian vice that's going to mounted out there, just need to build the stand for it.

Drives, here is a couple of photos of my anvil. It's a Trenton, about a 100 lbs. the stamping is worn off from heavy pitting on the base. Best I came up with is its was made around 1907, as the base is a hourglass shape.
It has a nice ring to it and I did the drop the steel ball test on it with about 60-70% rebound. I'll post up a YouTube when I remember my password:bounce:.
Best thing is it was only $ 40.
Found at a estate sale and I was standing at the garage door when it went up.

CB: i guess it paid to be first in line that day. nice find. i doubt you have any big old growth cedar stumps for it's stand so best of luck finding or building one.

we just talked about how metal ones can be softened up and a little less noisy if you put rubber under the anvil over on the show your anvil thread.

I'm sure you know an anvil is supposed to be used for hot steel and shouldn't be hammered on with cold steel. have you seen Junebuggy's blacksmith thread over in the fabrication section? it has a lot of great pictures and information.

cheers

Update on the roof extension. I trimmed the channels, installed the last two Galvalume panels and started on the gable trim.

Drives, thanks for the nice comments.
It's been a long haul, but it's almost done.
I have about one more day of trim and gutter work and I can stamp it DONE.

I'll post a photo once I get the gable end done.

Done with the trim. Put some Christmas lights up. I hung them in a very shop like way, using c-clamps to hold the light strings to the gable trim. Finally found a use for the little c clamps.

Next year I'll have some LED lights, these are old faded plain old vintage bulbs.
