When you're browsing the garage and estate sales and this pops up does your heart skip a beat?

Just a little. I'm assuming you bought it

 About the same price IIRC... and about the same condition. I've taken good care of it if that makes you feel any better... she's a beaut!

So you scored a 5197 still in original finish for $75?
Major suckage!

(I missed one for my own little collection by this much!

A buddy of mine is making baby bullet bookends. I like em!

Also, my buddy with the Parker 958 told me his spindle handle cover nut is brass not steel. Anyone else seen this before.

Hi Joe. I had 2, 8" Parkers and both had Brass collars. Here's one. Come to think of it, its not mine. It must be a gallery photo I downloaded at sometime.

I'm gonna go with kmscott on this and say those are probably bronze. Brass is real soft stuff, and doesn't stand up to much. Bronze can actually be real hard. If you try drilling or machining both, you'll see the difference. Brass is like butter, some bronzes are more like steel...

No matter who's Parker that was, she's a beaut. Do you have pictures of that stand?

AutoPts: that Parker 958 you posted is one of my favorite restorations so don't blame you for saving the picture. it was done by a member's dad in Arizona and another member from North Dakota drove to pick it up with that cool stand. I'm pretty sure KM built those Parker jaws and might have been his first Parkers he made.

Bagged: more pictures i've saved in case the owner doesn't have any handy.

Sandman: agreed that you do nice work on those huge vises you find. what is the model # on your big Reed? 108 S?

Picked up this little one yesterday. No name but seems familiar. The jaws are in good condition and line up well. Casting is a bit rough but machining is very good so I still think it's a U.S. product. It will replace the chinese vise in my kitchen. [emoji6]

Beautiful job on that (to me at least) never before seen Emmert.
Especially the contrasting lettering. Never seen better!

Steel: awesome job on your Emmert. is the plan to do that to all your inventory or would that take you too many years. ;)

P: welcome. even though Parker isn't one of my favorites (can't own them all) that 958 on that stand could almost work in my living room.

there is one stand I might like a little better and we've posted it before. it's worth posting again IMHO. the old vise isn't too bad either.

cheers

Bench mounted leg vise.
Interesting vise from England most unique feature is the box joint hinge.
Best guess age is about 160 years old based on manufacturer.

To all: I went to a sale today. It wasn’t clear if this was in the NFS pile or not so, I asked, $20. Does anyone know how the Taiwanese say “Wilton drill press vise”? On the way home I stopped at a garage sale and got 9 inch Petersen vise grips for $2. Not a spectacular day by any means, but I’m satisfied.

drives: That vise stand is so Back To The Future! I dig it the most, daddio.

blacksmithinva: That's too long. How about just Smithy? Anyway, welcome. That is a very nice leg vise. It has certainly aged well. Now I'll give you a warning about vises - It's a sickness, a disease! Run away fast while there is still time!

Riley: I've tried and failed with that warning many times. Maybe a word from a newly condemned member would carry more weight. It just might get your soul some redemption.

JW and Lineshaft - Are you listening? You might be able to help too.

Steelkilt: I keep going back to look at the pictures of that Emmert. How did you get the lettering so crisp and well defined? Just beautiful!

So I wanted to get this Wilton done earlier but things came up and work got a little busy. I finally got the lettering done. A little cleanup left to do on the jaws and other parts and I'm done. I'm not polishing this one. I like this color and I went back to the store I got it from to buy more, and they don't sell it anymore. I might have to order a case online.

Looks beautiful. Do you have anymore information about them? [emoji3]

I was looking to pick up,some blacksmith vices but I don't know too much about them.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=295802

I know Outlaw and a couple of others on here are more in the know about post vises. What I have heard them say is that a very large %,, like 50% or more are no name because the blacksmith made it themselves.

Also because they are forged, they can really take a beating. Not urgent for me, but when I tun across a nice deal on one, I will definitely get one; every shop needs a workhorse like these.

Devil of a job fabricating and brazing up a new jaw! Worth it though, it's an excellent tool.

The truth is guys....you should never judge a book by its cover. This old girl had straight up BATTLE scars! As you can see, the dovetail way was chipped, and while it didn't blow through (and there is evidence that it has been chipped a long long time), I couldn't stand to let it go altogether. I measured an angled hold-down with a "pinch-down" method and integrated it with the existing hole for the now um-utilized nut retainer. Then bolted it down with a hardened socket head bolt and washers and nuts on the inside. I designed it so the dj would also be able to have more of a bearing/sliding surface too. I had RITZBLITZ make the "pinch-bar" for me. Let's just say that the nut is well captivated!
Also,I know a bunch of you folks are NOT big fans of plastic (and I respect that, sorry Fretts) but I used this"elevator counterweight" as a fool around. I apologize to those offended.
No doubt the lettering sets it off. Waynseboros have sloppy raised letters (hey, I think I had to get creative with the 2 in the ½! It wasn't even there! ) but I go back several times and approach each letter from different angles and really, really, really try to have a steady hand. Be patient, less is better...I'll try to dig up a pic of the 2C that the lettering came out really good. Thanks to all, God bless

Screwdriver,

Does the key/spanner appear to have been welded to the head of clamping bolt/screw on the body by a previous owner or could that be how they're now done by Swindens?

It came to me like that, I think it's a home grown bodge. This one is ex-military, only a 1998! Poor machining on the castings led to the break.

HWly08E.jpg

That's a 0.2mm step on the surviving jaw. There was a matching step on the broken one.

I made up a repair piece, then bolted and brazed it.

Steelkilt: I had trouble following some of your previous post. It is obvious that you did more of a reconstruction than a simple restoration. It also seems that you were mildly chiding us for being fooled by things we could not see. Not judging a book by its cover is always a wise course, but in this case all we could see was a picture of the cover. Whatever your intent was thanks for sharing that with us. I'd also like to see more photos of the repairs and any pictures of the reconstruction in progress. I still like the finish and the lettering was top notch. Emmert Tigers are still on my Got To Have One list, but if I ever find one I'll look it over VERY carefully. Thanks.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I fell for it hook, line, and elevator counterweight.

bagged: I picked the wrong day to post a picture of a weenie drill press vise. I am overwhelmed by the hardware and expertise on this thread today. I really like your blue or green or blue-green Wilton. The black lettering really sets it off. It wouldn't happen to have been made in the 50's would it? We had a 57 Chevy with those colors - when it was new. Later alligator.

Thanks CRS. This is a 1978 Wilton. It's Krylon Satin Jade. I got the color with black lettering scheme idea from this Parker I saw on http://scuttle.dayid.org/wiki/index.php/Charles_Parker_Vise
It's from GJ member gregthor.

Now I need to go search for more of this paint and stock up.

Or I also have this color I might paint my Parker. It's just has a little more blue in it.

Here are some big vises I took to Rolag Minnesota to the big steam show. They featured blacksmithing. The beam with the big 8" and 9" vises and steam engine front axle weighed 6700#(beam is 1 1/4) and the "Vises of the round table weighed 4500#(3/4 plate). I just tried to put oddball ones on the round table from big leg vises to a reed 109. It garnered a lot of attention but I was not able to stay at the display as we had a big Aultman Taylor prairie tractor we had on display as well. The blacksmith shop told me there were lots of picture takers and a lot of interest. I think others on here should find events like this and take some to display or put on a trailer and show them off. Most people have not seen a lot of the older oddball vises.
When sorting the 8" vises I had 30 with some duplicates. I found a few I forgot about. It was hard to decide which ones to put on there because there was only so much room. As far as total vises I had over 300 last summer.

What do you guys think is a fair price for a Rock Island 567? It's a 7" double swiveler. I've seen 6" double swivelers before but I don't think any larger.
