Just got my first vice, an eBay Win at £25, it's a good old Record No 3. Plans are to restore it and hopefully keep for many years.

My father-in-law called me to say he saw a big ol’ carpenter’s vise at a local antique store. Found this waiting for me. The price was too low to pass up so home it came. It is complete and original with the exception of one dog which is cracked. I will likely braze it up and put it to work. I have had an Emmert Pattern on my list for a while but this was an unexpected surprise.

It was mounted upside down on a stand by the seller. Soon it will grace my bench.

AP: nice find. mine is missing that part that gives it the angles or extra support (at least i think mine should have one). anyway welcome to the group and since you know how to post nice pictures any chance you can post a few more because that vise deserves more than one when you have time.

You have likely heard this a hundred times or more "what a great site!"

I have a couple of vices and a few others for interest. A Record No3 is my regular used bit of kit that has experienced some abuse yet is remarkably un-scarred despite my occasional best attempts. Recently a 'Dawn' 5" fabricated vice came my way. It is still in good nick and waiting for some attention.
I found a Woden 4" ( 2nd image) and have been searching for a second larger vice for my son when I came upon The Garage Journal; the only trouble was that most images were unavailable to non member types, so I jumped in. And I am glad that I did.
With the goal of finding that larger vice for my son, the most recent purchase is an 8"(?) that I have yet to collect; from the blurry image it could be a Woden but I will know more when we collect tomorrow. ( first image)
Can images be posted directly here -- or do we rely on links to a photo host site?

Ill try to get some better pictures. I set my Reed 24 on top of the jaws for comparison. The tilt adjustment is pretty interesting. It is a cam that rides on a bar with seven notches cut in it. It also seems to be missing the auxiliary jaw but I think that is the case with most of these vises and you can get replacments. I found the serial number 479 on it. I am very excited to get it cleaned up and back to work.

Finished up the American Red Seal No. 54. Features brand new jaws by Kevin! And I 'm targeting the Kc area with one of there own. With the Royals winning the world series and the Chiefs in the playoffs I thought I'd pull it altogether in one great vise. The color is pure steel, flat but metallic .

Really nice. With a 10-0 run, I'm pulling for the Chiefs in the post season!

AP: i'm not sure if my Emmert is set up for the bar with the 7 notches. i hope so because that is a nice feature. thanks for the great pictures and for adding your Reed to the mix.

Slow: members might think it but they don't say it often enough how great the members and this site is. i look forward to reading, learning and a little BSing daily sort of like the old Pub days of years past. nice looking vice and hope it checks out. if you have any questions about a vise (vice) just ask and i'm sure one of us will help you if we can. also we have a vise repair 101 thread over in Vintage tools section if you want to see some of the work these guys do and have them describe how they did it.

welcome and hope you stick around and find a home here. we need more members like you.

McB: i love your new Avatar. nicely done and is that one still around or did you post in him/her memory?

Top: nice as usual and why not grab a couple of rings because your poor teams have taken a bashing the last couple decades. good luck

ALL: have a great weekend and hope you find something you NEED or would like to own.

Drives It's been a tough place to be a fan that's for sure. But neither team is looking to move any where unlike some.

I have come in to escape from the heat of the day, that sun can do some damage down this way.

Drive : Thanks for the welcome to my poor introduction; I forgot my manners so I will remedy that now.
I live in Auckland, New Zealand and am nearer to pension age than I would wish.
I like my garage tools and enjoy rejuvenating old cast iron camp ovens (when I am lucky to come upon them)and pans etc, but they have to be interesting and as I said, old. The fun is in the discovery and seeking out their history.
Air rifles are another weakness too:D

PS after some digging for information, the largest Woden vice I could discover is a 6 inch and subsequent to that I received an email from the owner of the vice; it's a Record.

Here is my Aussie Dawn vice. From the initial images I bought it on, the jaws were out of align but not enough to concern me. When it arrived I dis-assembled it for a rough clean and found loose jaws with filings behind them and a packing washer; non of it was required;) . As you can see the jaws close up nice and parallel.
It is not super heavy but at 22kg is stout enough for my purpose.
They make good machinery over there.

Drives,

Everyone gets a break from the angry elf avatar until next August. :D This guy is a young one. He'll be three in March and his goals in life are eating and sleeping as much as he can. Good goals.

I like the idea of those offset vises, hope to find one someday.

Slow: Nice to meet you. while we are freezing up here you guys down under are sweating. we'll both have to try and figure out how to spend 6 months at each location. i've heard New Zealand is great other than Taz and a few bugs maybe perfect.

again welcome to the group and if you need any help GJ has a member type email call PM's (Private Messages) and feel free to email me or any member you wish if you think they might have the answer to your questions.

McB: i never thought your elf was angry, but didn't look close because maybe he was wearing a Brown's fan outfit. maybe you can help Top root for his Cheifs.

Hi all. I was wondering - is scuttle.dayid.org being actively updated?

Thanks,
Thrumcap

No, I've not updated it in quite a while.

I've got it in my plans to re-vamp it and make it easier for me to maintain so updates aren't so tedious - it just hasn't happened yet.

From the change-logs it looks like -> yep -> updates went to a trickle right around when daughter #1 arrived and went full-stop when #2 was born :)

Dayid: some of us would like to help you make your vise wiki better and would you like to set it up here so one of us that doesn't have 2 little ones can update it. also in case you haven't seen it there is a huge list of vise companies on the #2 post of the Vise Repair 101 thread in the vintage tool section.

also want to give you a big thank you because your Vise Wiki was a place i went to first when checking on vises.:bowdown:

congrats on having a couple little Dayids too.

Thanks Dayid, after building just the Wilton date database I know how much work these databases are! If I knew how many hours I had in it I probably wouldn't have done it LOL.

I'm just glad to know there is a Dayid.---I had about convinced myself that he was on the order of a Yety, or a Chupacabra.---I mean I really wanted there to be a Dayid but it couldn't be proved.---Or I thought it might be some members pseudonym.---Anonymity can be a precious thing to some.

A mighty fine piece of work you've done Sir.

Dayid,
I also want to thank you for your Wiki site. Many times I've found it to be a great source for the rich history of vises.

Slow Runner,
Welcome to the group. That's a cool looking Dawn vise that you have. Looks like if you hang around here long enough, you will own at least 20 vises.

Bluebolt, I don't want to leave you out either.---Respect where respect is due.---I would hate to venture a guess as to how many hours are represented in the Wilton Dating Spreadsheet.---It's really well organized and easy on the eye.

Thanks for your time.

PS after some digging for information, the largest Woden vice I could discover is a 6 inch and subsequent to that I received an email from the owner of the vice; it's a Record.

My son came over this morning and we drove to the Shore to collect the vice. It's nice enough, not the 8" monster just the smaller 6 inch, used not abused. The jaw inserts are worn but that is of no concern; who needs sharp knurling on clamping faces:)
The seller apologised & offered it at near half the money..everyone is happy.
It has 'Made in England' cast on the fixed jaw rhs but no mention of 'Record'. There is a casting number inside the slide that may help in identifying its origin.......... it is all very interesting.

Everything goes into the caustic drum tomorrow for stripping. There doesn't appear to be any reason to use the electrolysis.
Here are some images. The first is a baby 2 1/2" vice my son brought over for a refurb. Acme thread with a closed slide end; well made.
Perhaps someone will recognise that also?

Thanks for the messages of welcome.
Mark: 20 vices? Stop me if I ever approach that number as surely it would qualify me for a mental health assessment? :D;)
