I have a spare spring clip that measures 1 1/8" (like yours), but the wire it's made out of looks thinner than yours. Might have too much gear wobble.

The spring clip from an SK 3/8" roundhead is a bit bigger than 1 1/4" out of the ratchet, but, it's a thicker square wire and might compress down enough for you.

If you want to chance mine, send me your addy in a PM and I'll send it to you.

that is a #2736 Indestro flex-head 3/8" drive ratchet, and what you're looking for is a #2775-8 Indestro repair kit.

the guts of the #2775A (see popparoach's photos previous page) might fit it... I'd have to dig mine out and take a look to say for sure.

the only thing I'm seeing right now to fix your problem is HERE:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Ind...052921?hash=item4645e085b9:g:MrkAAOSwv0tVTrwc

$38.41 total and you'll have the parts you need to fix the ratchet and a mess of other stuff.
If you were able to find the repair kit you'd pay at least $20-$25 for it. They are effectively non-existent.

I really appreciate the offer! I pulled the spring clip out of my 3/8 SK ratchet and tried to use it to no avail. Thanks anyway!

I've looked on eBay for another ratchet, but then I'm robbing Peter to pay Paul. I'll have to see if I can find another ratchet at an estate or garage sale that is in poor cosmetic shape. Thanks for the lead.

^ that may well turn out to be your only option.

Again: the guts from the #2775A should fit that head - there's a photo of a #2736 (3/8" drive swivel-head) up-thread into which somebody installed the guts from a #2775A.

Google says about 450 miles (or about 7 hours) driving from Houston to Oklahoma City. You could drive up to Meridian Tool in OKC and buy a brand new #2775A for $12.99.
No, they won't ship them out... I already called and asked.
But if you think you might be able to be more persuasive, the owner is Lee Gross and his phone number is 4o5 682 2626.
If you can get him to ship them out, I want two more. ;)

Previously I posted a photo of a pair of "Xpert" 6-inch slip-joint pliers, manufactured by Indestro in Chicago for their low-end "Xpert" brand.

This was just listed on Ebay, and I thought some of you might find it of interest.
Indestro "Xpert" (made in Japan) #90504 13-piece 3/8" drive metric socket set
NOS in the original box
asking $55.00 + $13.10 shipping

first one I've ever seen. screen shots from Ebay:

^ I didn't either. We sold "Xpert", but the stuff were getting was all US made.
I am assuming the above Japanese-manufactured set was probably made very late in the game, after we switched over to Thorsen in the mid-1980s.

oh yeah.
3/8" 6-point SAE/metric? shallow/deep?

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odk.../8.TRS1&_nkw=indestro+socket+set+3/8&_sacat=0

most of those have been listed now for several weeks. the NOS stuff over a month.
shipping to me here on the west coast makes it a bit spendy.

that said... it's a week before Christmas so that might have slowed things down, although I've watched (and been involved in) a few last-minute bidding wars on some cherry sets over the last couple weeks.

you may feel free to forward photos/descriptions and asking prices to me. ;)

cool thread , I have tons of indestro scattered thru my tools. Worked for a autoparts jobber for 15 years and that was our line of tools we sold. That tool board a couple posts back really brought back some memories, when someone walked up to our counter that was what they saw.

Indestro offset double box set of wrenches. Found them in a bucket full of old wrenches at shop. Probably a set purchased years ago by my dad or my grandpa. Cleaned them up a little and put them in my box. Have a double of the 5/8, 11/16.

I picked up this set of Indestro sockets at a thrift store. It would seem to have been stored upside down - causing the only logo I can find to be nearly scratched off. Paid $8.95

Can anyone shed any more light on this set?

there's a NOS Duro-Indestro #773 on Ebay right now. guy wants $80 bucks for it.

gotta have the long one, eh? I see #773S wrenches on Ebay now and then - there's three of them on there now, although they're kind of beat up.
just have to keep your eye on the new listings. I don't see a lot of the long series combination wrenches on there, though, except for the larger sizes (1" and up, usually.)

This is a great thread!

I was doing some garage cleaning last week and stumbled upon some tools that I forgot that I even had! I picked up an Indestro Super 1/2" socket set many years ago at an estate sale, among other things. The price? $1 CAD  Or currently, $0.71 USD

It's an Indestro Set No: 7803 and seems to be almost complete. 7/16" to 1" inclusive 1/2" drive sockets, a 3201 Ratchet, an extension (forgot to take a picture of the model #). Unfortunately the breaker bar is not original to the kit that I can tell, it is a Ward model

I'm glad I looked up Indestro on GJ. When I initially bought the tools, I figured they were some cheap **** department store brand. This was before I came to the realization that even cheap **** department store tools from 60 years ago are still better than much of what we have available now......

And besides, upon reading up on Indestro it turns out it was not a cheap **** brand anyhow.

Based on the great documentation and information provided on this thread and alloy artifact, it looks like these are from the late 1940's to 1950's. Can anyone confirm that? That would make sense based on the age of the other tools that I bought at that estate sale.

Cheers,

Ryan E

Nice Indestro set. I think you have the dates right. Late 40s and they were still using that banded knurling pattern on the sockets. Don't discount the Wards flex head breaker though, I believe they were also made my Duro/Indestro. That's a fantastic score for $1.

I didn't think I'd find myself posting in this somewhat obscure thread until I noticed that I did have at least one Indestro DOE in my box. I hardly ever use SAE anymore since I sold my boat, but this was included in a pawn shop Kennedy box that had a bunch of decent USA SAE wrenches, as well as a Snap On quick-release ratchet, vernier calipers, gauge blocks, etc. etc.

Ryan:
Your Indestro #7803 12-piece 1/2" drive socket set appears on page 11 of the 1959 Indestro catalog No. 22 as containing:
One each 1/2" drive shallow 12-point sockets: 1214, 1216, 1218, 1220, 1222, 1224, 1226, 1228, 1230, 1232 (7/16" - 1")
One each #3210 "cross bar" (for breaker)
One each #3220H 11½" breaker bar

The #3201 ratchet and the extension were added to the set at some point.
The Wards breaker bar, if it is a "Powr-Kraft", was likely manufactured by Indestro for Montgomery Ward. From the photo above, it does not appear to be of Thorsen manufacture. (Wards used several different suppliers for their "Powr-Kraft" line.)

I have the same set out in the garage, but somebody added a #3275 (later production, round-head fine-tooth) ratchet to mine. (And, like yours, the #3210 "cross bar" is, of course, missing.)

The "Mechanic's Net" price for the set on the January 1959 price list is $12.50.

Best guess would be mid-to-late 1950's to mid-1960's production. Indestro was painting their boxes a light blue color previous to that time period. Taking the #3201 ratchet into consideration as an item that was added to the set, I would tend to place the vintage toward the earlier part of that time frame (but of course that's pure speculation on my part; assuming the ratchet was purchased new.)

--

re: Username's comment above about the knurled band at the base of the sockets:
The knurled band is on all Indestro "Super" sockets from the 1940's all the way up to their last production runs when they closed in 1990.
Some have the knurled band (similar, but not exactly the same back into the 1930s.

Four cycle and Username: Simply outstanding information! I had no idea that the ratchet didn't belong with the set. As to the breaker bar, I will have to check to see what Ward model or "line" it was from. The #3210 cross bar you are referring to - is that the steel rod visible in the foreground of the 4th pic I posted?

The set also came with a few vintage Husky 3/8" extensions and some Japanese 3/8" universals.

Thanks again for the great info. I will keep my eyes open for more Indestro tools in the future. Actually, speaking of that, I am headed to my folks place this weekend and will go through my grandfathers tools and see what I can dig up. Mostly Craftsman since we didn't seem to get such a variety here in Canada but I now know that there are some very old hex drive Indestro sockets there too based on the info/photos on alloy artifacts.

Sadly, these really old sockets were used mostly for making custom tools over the years and many were cut up in the process. If I knew then what I know now!

oops! I missed that!
Yes, that is indeed the "unobtainium" #3210 cross bar. You can pretty much name your price for it; they are essentially non-existent. (They fall on the floor, roll under the work bench, and grandpa dies and the house is bulldozed before they're recovered.)

The "Husky" items, if they are of the same vintage (and stamped "USA") were most likely made by The New Britain Machine Company.

The correct universal joint for that set is an Indestro #3217 - you can pick one up on Ebay for anywhere from $5-$12.
The part numbers in Indestro for the extensions are 3230 (2-7/16"), 3216 (5-1/2"), and 3211 (10"). They are fairly difficult to find in decent condition, although there is a late-production NOS one on Ebay right now (still in the package), but it has NO markings on it at all (no manufacturer's name, no part number, so other than the package it is not identifiable as an Indestro product - it looks the same as a JS Tool (Alpharetta, Ga.) or many Asian-made pieces.)
$8 incl. shipping: http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-NOS...881084?hash=item542994f63c:g:mtYAAOSwcBhWXPTx

You can find Indestro "Select" extensions sometimes, like this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Indestro-1-...754516?hash=item33aeb9f4d4:g:GPEAAOSwhkRWeCcw

The only difference being the piece will be stamped "Select" instead of "Super" and will have a 6000-series part number. But don't compromise the set: its intrinsic value as a collector set is that it's mostly matched pieces.

Very nice set. To say you stole it for $1 would be a gross understatement. ;)

Going way back with this set. Found at ReStore for $3. Just missing the hex drive for the ratchet.

^ I might have one of those I can part with... not sure... think I've got an old #22 set that's just a few oddball bits and pieces and a broken ratchet.

- it looks the same as a JS Tool (Alpharetta, Ga.)

While I know that JS in Alpharetta GA builds/built? torque wrenches, any piece of hardline socket/wrench tooling that I've ever seen that is marked JS is a piece of SK rebranded for sale to the government. (with no change to part number)
If you've got a JS universal, I'd love to know if it has a SK part number.
One casualty of collecting near a big AFB is you get geeky about these things......

As a partial hijack apology, here's one of my favorite DOE's:

Four cycle - thanks for the ebay links.

The extension that I have (in the photo) appears to be the proper 3216. Someone had stuffed a few miscellaneous Husky brand 3/8" extensions in the box as well. They aren't in the photos but were made in the USA so should be of New Britain origin as you pointed out. Another tool manufacturer I shall now learn about!

I checked the breaker bar. It is a Wards "Master Quality". Would that be manufactured by Indestro and Wards branded or would it be from another manufacturer? The knurling appears similar but isn't quite as nice as that on the 3201 ratchet.

Now I am wishing I had poked around more at that estate sale - there was probably a bunch more Indestro stuff there that I missed. If it didn't sell that day it probably ended up at the Goodwill or in a dumpster sadly. They were practically giving stuff away prior to selling the house.

Montgomery Ward used several different suppliers for their hand tools - three within a ten-year period.
Look at photos at AlloyArtifacts.org (or here or ToolArchives.com) and compare your Ward extension with Indestro/Duro-Chrome, Thorsen/Giller, and New Britain (Husky). Knurling/banding may be the same - usually a fairly good indicator.

More Indestro Tools!

I did some digging through my grand-father's tool horde and came up with this gem:

A nice 3275 1/2" drive ratchet to keep my 3201 company!

I went through all of the sockets and wrenches but only came up with a single Indestro socket:

The socket appears to be quite a bit newer than the ratchet and definitely much newer than the set I posted up earlier.

It appears that the hex-drive socket set that I remember has gone missing. I am still hoping to find it, but don't have much hope. There was a period of garage "purging" that took place a few years ago. I have since instructed that under no circumstances should any tools of any kind be disposed of!

Lots of other fascinating ratchets to learn about though (the Indestro 3275 is pictured with them):

I think I will take a cruise through the local pawnshops to see what they might have..... Great, just great. Another tool brand that I need to collect :lol_hitti

Rileysan: your Indestro socket set posted above appears to be quite similar to one of those shown in one of the catalog photos I posted on the previous page.

Ryan: your "Select" socket is definitely of more recent vintage than your #3275 ratchet. if it's a 1/2" drive 5/8" 12-point it's a.... 6220 (6-point would be a #6220H) ? same tool as the "Super", except with the two plain bands instead of the single knurled band. same/same. little difference in price.
WHY Indestro was trying to sell three different product lines ("Indestro", "Indestro Super", and "Indestro Select"), along with all the private label stuff they were making for Wards, Western Auto, and others remains a mystery.
