ALL: for all of you using or wanting to use Fastenal shipping. so far I've used them with great success and just heard that they will insure goods for loss if not in a crate on a pallet, but not for damage if you don't build a crate. since I sold my trailer and my lift is stuck in the back of my shop I built this pallet/crate inside my Honda Pilot and just shipped it off to a GJ member with some Craftsman items in it. the size of my pallet/crate is 41.5 inches wide, 24 inches tall and 31 inches deep and it might have over 100 deck screws in it.

Fastenal does NOT deliver to Canada yet, but they are reasonable especially for big items that you can put on a pallet.

DID I HEAR SOMEBODY GOT PM'D ABOUT SELLING A 1HP BLOCK??:D::D:D

Anyone know of what a 1hp is worth? There is one on the bay with a stand and the seller is very helpful . ...
04chase, I've used FedEx to pack and ship Blocks.
I have packed up CM stands into a box and shipping tube (from Staples) and sent them by USPS. Actually, USPS will pick-up at your front porch.

I sent a 1-HP Block a year ago from 48334 to 59828
FedEx Pack & Ship
Box 1 of 2
$150.00 ---- Declared Value
Fragile- Heavy

$18.99 ---- Materials' Size = 19x14x13
$38.89 ---- Weight 32.0 LB
$01.14 ---- MI 6% Sales Tax
$59.02 ---- Total
-----------------
HD Base
FedEx Pack & Ship
Box 2 of 2
$50.00 ---- Declared Value
Fragile- Heavy

$09.49 ---- Materials' Size = ???
$23.24 ---- 9.0 LB Weigh
$00.57 ---- MI 6% Sales Tax
$33.30 ---- Total

================================
CM stand, sent last August from 48334 to 72712

$45.00 ---- USPS - Priority Mail® 3-Day, 2 packages
$06.35 ---- Twist & Lock Mailing Tube; includes 6% Sales Tax
$04.23 ---- Box - 14"x14"x14"; includes 6% Sales Tax
$10.59 ---- 1/2 Roll of Bubble Wrap; includes 6% Sales Tax
---------
$66.17 ---- Total

You can save $$ if you box and pack FedEx items yourself.

But, the dozen or more Blocks I've sent with FedEx, there was only 1 claim, and FedEx paid in full without hesitation.

If you pack yourself, be sure to check the carriers policy, I know FedEx's coverage is not the same as it is when they pack.

I hope this helps.
:)

All the recent restorations on here got me motivated and my 1/2hp is pretty much done including new bearings (which were both easily removed w/o a puller). I just need to paint the light arm and get a label made.

It looks great! Funny, but without the label, it looks like some sort of crazy grinder-bot!!!

CM BLOCK GRINDER BADGE

Several weeks ago we were having a discussion here regarding reproducing badges. Some opinions were thrown around: water-slide decal, vinyl stickers and infused(printed) aluminum. I had mentioned then I had horrible outcomes on two occasions using water-slide decals and stated that I would go the route of a vinyl sticker on new aluminum stock and possibly make a lot of them to sell here. Some showed interest if I did it.

Shortly after, I began to read the results of two GJers using Bayphoto to produce MetalPrints for their CM grinders. Well that got the gears grinding and week, days, hours later doing further research, learning to use Adobe Illustrator, and final fabrication I got this. I won't go into details here, you can read my thread Machine Name Plate Tag Reproduction: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=323165

Here are some quick photos. If there is any interest on this particular CM 1/3hp grinder badge, I have five left. Asking $12 each (includes 4 aluminum solid rivets) plus USPS First Class $2.60 with Tracking Number. Also looking into reproducing the gold version of this size badge. Both McBrownie and Torqueman have forwarded images to work off of.

SPECS:
- .045 thick aluminum with brush finish. Same finish as original badges however thicker, clear background will show through as original
- 2-5/8" x 3-5/32" x .045"
- 1/8" mounting holes. Will need to be slightly enlarge to line up with CM grinder center steel band
- Image is infused into the aluminum and can be cleaned with household glass cleaner
- Four (4) aluminum solid rivets included
- Badge for CM Block Grinder model 397.19580

You can PM contact info (name & address). Personal check or Paypal.

Enjoy and thanks-David

That is a good question, and it is asked from time to time.

So, here's my take on it, it depends.

Not to be a smart-aleck, but see this post.

I completely understand it's worth what someone is willing to pay just wanted to get an idea of what a decent condition full functioning all parts included 1hp 8" block grinder would be worth ballpark in today's market and what most on here feel they would pay.

Well, they are scarce; even in the industrialized SE Michigan area.

I know several people have been looking for 3/4-HP and 1-HP Blocks for almost 2 years.

Heck, take a look at this one, and tell me I'm not crazy to have driven to Chicago to get it. :eyecrazy:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=279094

Now that the warmer weather has returned to this part of the country, I will get restarted on it's restore.

I just don't know how to place a value on it just yet.

I'm sure some other members have ideas, and they'll pipe in.

It's OK to ask, it's not like OWWM where they do not evaluate the worth of a machine.

They also, will not give advise on home/shop wiring. BTW

It does look very naked without the label. Speaking of labels... any recommendations on where to have one printed? I took one of the word doc files from your thread TM and made some tweaks. Found a few places online, but open to any suggestions before pulling the trigger.

Pup- those metal labels came out great! I just downloaded a free trial of Illustrator and want to see if I can create a better quality label in lieu of the word version. How difficult is it to design one in that s/w?

Pup that looks great!

So I was just using my early 60's 1/2HP block... for about two hours. It didn't want to turn off. Unplugged it, and going to see what happens when I plug it back in tomorrow. Should just be the switch, right? And a regular toggle from the auto parts store will do the trick, correct?

That's the bad boy I've been using after listing the 1/3 on eBay since I picked up a Walker Turner 1/2HP.

Pup, I would gladly pay that $12 for a new tag for this one.

Also, source for bearings for this model?

I heard about StickerMule.com on a YouTube video by Keith Rucker - VintageMachinery.org

They accept a number of art files, and .jpg.

If they can't work with the MS-Word file, you may find a good jpg one in the PhotoShop SlideShow of CM Labels and Logos - http://s786.photobucket.com/user/torqueman2002/slideshow/CM 006 Labels

Let me know how you make out. If you need, I can search for one on my HD.

This is fascinating to me - I didn't realize how uncommon/rare the bigger blocks are. I know of a 1HP on original Craftsman stand for sale right now for $175 (not advertised and am unsure of the year of manufacture). I figured it was a reasonable price but not a good enough deal for me to jump. I guess I was wrong?!?

What I also find interesting is that no one showed interest in the 3/4hp block I purchased for $30 because it's a later model and lacks the luster and style of the early models. Perhaps the later models are not so rare? Aside from the 8" Baldor grinder at work, I've never used a more powerful grinder.

I GOT A 2HP!!

Err. maybe I mean 2hp all together,,,lol.

I finally got that damn 3/4 I been waiting on. Thought I'd take some family pictures. First we got the 3/4 twins. Then there's their 1/2 brother. But I think there's something wrong with him. He can't make up his mind if he's a grinder or a sander. :D

All together I'm gonna call them Moe, Larry, and Shemp. Yes I like Shemp.

Just for the fun of it, post how much combined horse power of block grinders you have in your possession right now. Pics if possible.

Ya. I just wished I had some food to put on that table. Spent all my money on damn grinders,,,,lol.

Well. I guess there's a lot of iron in a grinder for when I get hungry. Talk about roughage though. :headscrat

CalsSX2: Shemp is acceptable. He was a Howard brother after all. I'm just glad you didn't call one Curly Joe. Nice bunch of grinders you have. I'm seriously jealous!

Sorry bro, I didn't realize the Matrix had me....

Now, I definitely won't be posting this one in the "Hot Deals" thread....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/182058206575?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D182058206575%26_rdc%3D1

I think the word on blocks has gotten out? Looking on the bright side, shipping is quite reasonable.

I see you are new to the block, most people here have been around the block a few times and know what these things can go for. Collectors will pay good money for a pristine model they don't own. The only reason I let that one go to you was I have one exactly like it, and I think you are a good person that will take care of it, the perfect storm if you will.

Anyway, the block monkey is on your back now so happy hunting!

Seriously now.

Here's the 3/4 I got today as received. The guy said it was his Dads. And it was used from day one as a flatware buffer. I can tell this was true since the wheels are brand new, never used. They were with the covers and tool rests in a box of assorted sanding and buffing stuff. The covers where removed from the start too. As they look new and everything else is covered in red jewelers rouge. So to me, that means this thing has had an easy life. Just need a good bath.

Unfortunately I'm missing the flat parts for the tool rests. But the are still usable. And I'm going to be making some of these anyway. It's missing the light shades, of which I bought a new plastic one and I'm making the metal one. Also a cracked eye shield.

Do you guys think there would be any reason not to use the wheels since they are that old. I would think they should be ok as long as they pass the ring test.

Also. See the smaller washers. Is that's something he had rigged for a smaller buffing wheel. Or could those maybe used for something else like a wire wheel. They do fit into the space of a smaller wire wheel perfectly. I haven't really looked to see if they fit a larger wheel.

So here's some pic's. I don't think I got too bad of a deal for $60 and he deliver from 300 miles away.

JZ,

Please provide more information on the wire wheel that you are using. I have been using an Anderson 03334 8" inch .006" stainless steel with a 5/8 arbor and it seems a little too aggressive on a 3/4hp. Looking for something a little "softer".
