Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

I'm just curious if there are plans for a safety railing along the steps to the upper room? I'm sure the building codes in Virginia where I live would require this. This looks to be a really great space to work in, I'm sure you will enjoy. I'm building a light sport aircraft, (Van's RV-12) in a 2 car garage and your garage would be like a hanger to me!

gilr,

Yes there will be a railing. The plan is for it to be removable around the upper platform. By undoing a few bolts and moving the railing out of the way temporarily, one could use a forklift (or whatever) to bring an awkward/heavy object from the pad outside the garage door to the Mezzanine.

Building an aircraft. Now there's a project! Good luck on that.

Best regards,

Scott

Just saw this garage pit on Pinterest and thought of your storm pit. Looks like an interesting addition to what you are building:

I hope the link works!

gilr,

The link worked great!

After my trial run with the lawnmower last weekend and an actual vehicle today, I'm realized I will need something like the contraption in the picture to put tools on, mount lights on or place a bucket to catch fluids in.

Thanks for sending the link!

Best regards,

Scott

Lovin' the OSHA approved ladder hopping.

Paint done, one step closer to completion.

Shorty Korte,

The painters worked very hard. They seldom were sitting still. They took advantage of some pretty decent weather to get everything painted quickly.

The ladder hopping was pretty entertaining! Ha!

Your garage is really looking like a thing of beauty now, way to go!

C_F,

Thanks! It's great to see the colors come together. I'm waiting for one of the neighbors to tell me, "I liked the yellow better." Ha!

Friday - March 18, 2016

Today was a slack day. Since nothing was going on, I decided to drive a real automobile into the Lone Beech Garage and do some maintenance. Our 2013 Toyota Highlander was due for an oil change so in she went.

20160318-01.jpg 20160318-02.jpg 20160318-03.jpg

Once again there was a lot of schlepping of tools back and forth from the house. Still, it was great to use the garage for its intended purpose!

Not long after the car maintenance began, a delivery of door locksets arrived.

20160318-04.jpg 20160318-05.jpg

I sent a text to the builder and towards the end of the day, a worker arrived and started installing the door hardware. He made good progress but he will return tomorrow afternoon to finish this project.

Great to see you are able to start to put the garage to good use and I guess you would be starting to get just a little bit keen to move in.

Now that you are getting closer to putting in the lift, I wanted to ask another question. According to your CAD model, you show the lift in the middle bay. It seems to me that it would be better in the end bay on the right. With it on the end, you would have more open space if needed. I know, you have plenty of space, but you can never have too much. In the case of my garage project, which is still a mental exercise, I want the lift close to the work bench and all the other support equipment. Less schlepping around, as you say. I haven't thoroughly examined your bench and equipment layout, so I don't know how that plays into your decision. So where's the question? Oh, yea. What was your rationale for choosing the center bay for the lift?

1/2 Cup,

Yes, it's nice to get a bit of usefulness out of this investment. The more times I use the building, the more I want to start moving tools and such into it.

Patience...
I've waited this long and just need a little more patience to see the project through.

Despite being patient, I did use the building again today. Ha!

camarosrus69,

Thank you for your thoughtful post.

The way I have my building visualized is that the bay to the right will be a metal shop area. I wanted to use the wall space to easily get electricity to the various tools that will line that wall. I really considered not having a garage door in that area for a while but decided it would give that "zone" more flexibility to be used for auto repair should I want to do so.

The middle bay was conceived to be the auto repair/maintenance area. As mentioned above, the Metal shop area can also multitask and support the auto area as well. I will probably have most of my auto tools in 3 craigslist Snap-On Rolling Tool Cabinets stationed between the middle bay and the right-hand bay.

It probably also has something to do with how the design evolved. Originally, I had envisioned an asymmetric roof line. The peak of the roof would have been centered - more or less - over the tall drive through bay. As the roof line descended to the right to a more normal shop ceiling height, the center bay would be able to accommodate a 2-post lift but the right-hand bay's ceiling would have been too low.

As the design mutated into its current form, the lift didn't move from the center bay. Ha!

Best regards,

Scott

Dadofour,

We are getting there but there's a lot of exterior work that is a big part of this project. My wife and I were discussing this morning how we were going to handle the phase that rips up the concrete that allows access to our house garage.

I do hope to install the cabinets in the Mezzanine. Maybe I'm being naïve.

Sunday - March 20, 2016

This morning as we went to church it felt more like late winter and less like early spring. Temperatures were in the 40's and there was a breeze that made it feel even cooler. I think we're supposed to get near freezing tonight.

That cool weather with partly cloudy skies and a breeze persisted through the afternoon. I had to dig out a long sleeve T-Shirt to wear as I worked around the Lone Beech Garage this afternoon.

20160320-01.jpg 20160320-02.jpg

I decided to remove the "Concrete Form Tabs" from the loading dock area. That was an easy job and it was completed in about 30 minutes.

Re: The Lone Beech Garage Build Thread (60x46)

Continued...

My wife has a 1997 Honda del Sol. This car has been making a horrible rattling noise of late and I thought today might be a good time to see if we could localize where the noise was coming from. I thought I'd pull it into the Lone Beech Garage and, with my wife's assistance, check out the underside of the car while it was under power.

20160320-11.jpg 20160320-12.jpg

This is a pretty small car and doesn't have a lot of ground clearance. I was afraid - since the pad in front of the building hasn't been poured yet - that there might be an issue getting it into the building without dragging something as it entered. I put down some scrap pieces of Hardiplank material to help clear the lip of the slab.

20160320-13.jpg

The del Sol managed to get through the 12' x 14' door without issue.

20160320-14.jpg

We straddled the Tornado Shelter and then my wife and I discussed each of our roles in this diagnosis attempt. I would go under the car and after I disappeared from view my wife would start the car. After about 15 seconds, she would rev the engine a few times. (The rattling had been more pronounced when the car was accelerating.)

20160320-15.jpg 20160320-16.jpg

As the car was being revved, I grabbed the exhaust pipe's heat shields in various places - I had some thick gloves on - and at one point when I grabbed it the rattling stopped. I held that area with my hands as my wife revved the car a few more times. No rattling while I had hold of it.

She then shut down the car and I examined the exhaust plumbing closely. I found a bolt hole for one of the heat shield bolts had failed. The white arrow shows the location. I'm pretty sure a repair of this area will eliminate the rattling noise.

The repair will have to wait for another day but my wife seemed happy that a reasonably easy solution seemed to be available.

It was good to be able to use the Lone Beech Garage twice in one weekend!

Electrician is supposed to be onsite again tomorrow!

If you can't get a bolt to work, a stainless rad hose clamp may work to fix the noise.

Thanks guys! There was some quiet time on the building site this afternoon and I got the del Sol back over the Tornado Shelter again. I encircled the "bad bolt hole" area with a Hose Clamp and tightened it down. This has helped a lot - the two halves of the heat shield are no longer beating against each other - but sometimes there's still a buzzing.

When I was under the car I noticed, even after the clamp was on, that the heat shield on one end of that pipe could move enough to contact the pipe it was shielding. On that end of the pipe, I think I need some sort of material between the heat shield and the pipe so that it always in solid contact with the pipe to keep it from rattling.

Other than that seemingly simple fix, I guess the other options are:
Removing the heat shield or...
Purchasing a new exhaust B-Pipe.

Best regards,

Scott

Monday - March 21, 2016

This morning there was frost on the roof of the Lone Beech Garage as I made my way from my house to the building. The Electrician was back from the Dominican Republic and was installing lights in the building.

20160321-01.jpg

He had gotten all the T5 fixtures removed from their boxes and prepared for installation.

20160321-02.jpg 20160321-03.jpg

When I entered the building he was up on the scaffolding installing fixtures over the area the 2-Post Lift will be installed.

20160321-04.jpg

Around noon he had to leave to work at another job for a while but he had gotten all the fixtures installed in the two "short" bays.

He will be back tomorrow morning to install more light fixtures and to get some circuit breakers in place for the Heating & Cooling guys. They are scheduled to start installing their exterior units tomorrow.

Your Lone Beech Garage is really coming along nicely now that the rain has slowed down for you. All that is left is to finish it right. :) Now that you have a few more of those T5HO's up what are your thoughts on them? Also what is the color/temp. of the bulbs you've decided to use?

Did the electrician mention high bay lights? I have 4 and 6 tube high bay lights and I'm pleased. Mine are for general lighting where it looks like you might be more specific.

JB,

Yes the end does seem to be in sight!

With the install incomplete, the jury is still out on the T5HO's. My initial impression is that they will serve me well. In the areas that are pretty much complete, the space seems very well lit with no shadows. I went with 4000K tubes.

shortykorte,

I was fortunate to have a fellow GJ'r work up a lighting plan for me.

Lighting Plan Thread

My electrician just followed that plan. The electrician initially suggested an alternative or two - I don't recall what these alternatives were but they weren't multi-tube High Bay Lights - but I asked him to follow the lighting plan.

My local Kroger recently did a complete overhaul. I think they used what you're asking about. I remember when I saw that new lighting thinking that it seemed to work well.

Tuesday - March 22, 2016

Except for the pollen count, it was a glorious spring day in Peachtree City Georgia. There was an amazing number of vehicles parked in front of the Lone Beech Garage this morning. It has been a while since there had been this much activity.

20160322-01.jpg 20160322-02.jpg

The Electrician was continuing his work in the Auto/Metal Shop area of the building. With the two "short" bay's lighting now complete, he continued his work over the drive-through bay.

20160322-03.jpg 20160322-04.jpg

As he disappeared into the east end of the drive-through bay, I attempted to take pictures of the lighting in the west end of the building. My camera doesn't have a wide enough angle to take it all in but I did the best that I could.

20160322-05.jpg 20160322-06.jpg

At the end of the day, the Electrician almost finished the drive-through bay light fixtures. He had a technical issue with the very last fixture and will complete this part of the lighting plan tomorrow morning. Then he will start in the wood shop.

20160322-07.jpg

Before getting too involved in the lighting this morning, the Electrician stepped outside and got some electrical work ready for the Heating & Cooling crew.

20160322-11.jpg

The Heating & Air Guys showed up in force with the mini-split outside units.

20160322-12.jpg 20160322-13.jpg 20160322-14.jpg

Two were located under the stairs to the Mezzanine.

20160322-15.jpg

The third was located on the north wall of the building.

20160322-16.jpg 20160322-17.jpg

At the end of the day, the outside units were set in place. We'll have to wait a couple of days to test them completely. We still need to dig a trench and run the final electrical cables from the utility pole to the building. That should happen soon.

I noticed you have some doors opening to the out side do you have hinge pins that are non-removable? Another couple questions Why did you decide on wood stairs rather than metal stairs? Have you decided to put your air compressor outside? I have mine inside side with one draw back NOISE I even put rubber feet under it and it helps a lot. I also thought of building a enclosure around it but in my garage being open it still gets really warm around the motor and compressor area. If you put the compressor inside you might think of raising the compressor off the floor about 12" so you can put a pan to catch the drain tank water as I like to drain my tank after each use to prevent rust build up inside the tank.
The shop - garage looks really nice and can't wait to see all the equipment put in it.

Don,

Thanks for the kind words and thoughts!

Questions:

Wood stairs vs. steel

I asked the architect about steel during the design phase and he gave me the impression that cost would be impressive and finding a fabricator that would be willing to work on such a small project might be problematic. My architect is semi-retired and, in hindsight, what may have been true when he was active may have changed. I do know that the steel I acquired was cheaper than I ever would have thought possible. I regularly listen to a Business Channel on TV. The prices for commodities (steel, copper, etc.) this past summer and fall were extremely low.
Condensed version: I would have preferred steel but I have wood.

Compressor outside vs. inside

The compressor will be inside - at least initially. In the future I may move it to under the Mezzanine stairs but that will have to wait for Lone Beech Garage 2.0

Best regards,

Scott

Since the messy part of the build is now in the rear view mirror, a worker came and cleaned up the debris pile in the Lone Beech Garage. There's still a few pieces of drywall and some trim that needs to be dealt with but the main clutter is gone.

20160323-03.jpg

The Electrician was on site all day. First order of business was finishing the lighting in the drive-through bay.

20160323-04.jpg

With that accomplished he moved to the Woodshop and started installing light fixtures in the area with the 11 foot ceiling.

20160323-05.jpg 20160323-06.jpg

Then he started on the Woodshop's 16 foot ceiling.

20160323-07.jpg

There's still a few fixtures to install but the main floor lighting is just about complete.

I think the Electrician will be putting all the circuit breakers in the main panel tomorrow and then installing lights in the Mezzanine.

Going to need a commercial floor scrubber to get the floors clean.

Jo Diesel,

Is this a device or a service? I'd be very interested in getting more information so that I can back up the builder on this issue.

It may be a service too... but there is such a device. We have one at work. It looks kind of like those things they use to put a new layer of ice on an ice skating rink, but smaller. It puts out some water, scrubs the floor then ***** up the nastiness

There are much smaller ones, not much larger than a big vacuum cleaner, too.

The Electrician had the building site to himself today.

20160324-01.jpg

When I walked into the building he had pretty much filled up the Circuit Breaker Panel.

20160324-02.jpg 20160324-03.jpg

He finished installing the last of the light fixtures in the Woodshop.

20160324-04.jpg 20160324-05.jpg

Then he installed the Wrap Around Fixtures in the Mezzanine.

The Mezzanine lights illuminate the room nicely!

Tomorrow the Builder, the Dirt Moving Sub & myself are to meet to discuss what needs to be done to the get the building site ready for all the exterior concrete.

I believe the Electrician is going to try to get a trench dug from the utility pole to the Lone Beech Garage on Monday. I'm looking forward to getting full power to the building!
