Any keys with those 4 locks?

sadly no. I looked hard too. every drawer or nail on the wall... 3 are all marked Atchison Topeka santa fe ... ATSF RYD. The black one is an Adlake with the 1936 patent on it. It reads AT& SF-S... A switch lock maybe? One of the Keline's look unused..

Can anyone tell me what this is tool is for? I got it as part of the $20 grab bag but is was marked $60. Looks like some sort of hammer like tool with all the nails in the box.

It's a Hilti powder actuated nail gun. Uses older .25 cal shots. That's a super old one though. I work for Hilti.

Top, great haul. You have over $170 in NOS files there. Can you show a few pics of the files/rasps or the ends of the boxes.

Here you go NY MartyLooks like 4 or 5 different sizes and 2 different brands

Also not sure what the Williams wrench is for on the right side of the pic? It is marked special tho!

As it just so happens, I'm sitting next to a copy of the Williams #308 catalog (1976?). The #808 is listed as a 1-1/4" 15*angle hex-box wrench w/industrial black finish. Its supposed to be a straight wrench. The fact that it's marked "special" could mean that the customer wanted a bent wrench, or that it is a different size utilizing the 808 blank, or both.

Williams would supply custom tools for military or industrial uses, using stock blanks. They would mark them with the model number from the catalog item the blank came from and stamp them "special" to differentiate them from the standard catalog items. The offer for custom tools appears on page 116 of the aforementioned catalog.

What the wrench was originally intended to be used for is a mystery.

Thank you for the info Jake! I will probably never have a use for it but for $1.50 there was no way i was leaving without it!

Cody,

I say buy it because you love it or buy it because you know you can sell it. Don't just buy it because it's there and cheap. One tactic I used to use was to look up items I was unsure of on Ebay using my phone, to get an idea of what they were selling for (now you have to search "Sold Items", not just listed items).

My opinion only--I would not have paid that much for the items you posted. However, sometimes the hunt and the experience of digging through a garage and basement is "worth it". Only you can decide.

I did good on the power tools and i know i can make money on the rotary hammer! I need to stop buying so many pliers and wrenches tho i get carried away with those! My morning stop was not as good of deal as the second stop when i was getting to fill a bag with tools for $20.

The key is actually selling the items you bought for resale at the price you expected. I've had a two stage air compressor on Craigslist for four months and still can't sell it at $250 (I bought it for $100 thinking I could get $550).

Yeah i think it has to be small and valuable so it can sell on ebay! You can't sell big items on ebay and you can't sell the small value items on either like single wrenches and pliers those are garage sale items!

I think you'll find that many, many thousands of people disagree with that.

His concept isn't wrong but I think a better way to state his case is to say that it's less economical to sell big items on eBay and small on CL. To make the point, I am more than happy to drive an hour for a heavy item but am rarely willing to pay shipping for the same thing whereas I will not drive an hour to purchase a $5 wrench but am more than happy to pay $3 shipping on that wrench.

Where things change is when you're dealing with a seller that may have more items than just a $5 wrench and you're counting on that when deciding to drive an hour.

Can you guys give me any pointers on where to sell the stuff? I am thinking power tools are best sold through ebay and maybe some of the wrenches and pliers can be sold in lots on ebay but i was thinking most of those need to be sold at a garage sale! I am starting to run out of room and i am buying more then i can keep and need to do something with this stuff soon!

I have gotten top dollar selling single wrenches and even single sockets on Ebay. Admittedly, they were Snap-on tools...less high end tools won't move as easily or necessarily command the same prices.

I also sold a big laser level in a case and with a separate tripod on Ebay. You can sell big items too, just make sure you plan the shipping in advance to keep from screwing yourself.

He likes to use absolute terms to convey relative concepts, and if he put a little more thought into what he posts maybe he wouldn't need a translator. I was mostly posting that hoping he would clarify and realize that his words were mismatched with his point.

And I agree with you 100%, and I did understand what he was trying to communicate. But I see a lot of people (with a good bit of time on their hands, mind you) sell small things for less than a dollar and based on either their volume or longevity on EvilBay, do okay (at least in their eyes). Hell, if you can sell used socks for money on Ebay you can sell tools.

I know that is what he was saying but i was just double checking because my grammar isn't always the best! If i am never going to get to the tools i should probably sell them. When will i ever need a industrial rotary hammer or 100 plus pliers?

Toppop,
You need to check the completed listings on eBay for those saw files. NOS ones sell for about $10 each, and a box of 12 for about $100. :shocking:

Went to a garage sale at a RR yard looking for vises...found none, but I did find this. 80 Gallon US made AMP compressor. 5 hp motor, 1 phase 230v. Pd $150. No place to plug it in but I bought it anyway.

Figured some of you guys knew a bit about the older Craftsman drill presses so I thought I'd ask my question here. If there's a thread on GJ about them, let me know and I'll post there!

I borrowed this picture from another thread. Are the two rods, one where the pulley attaches and the one with the notches, supposed to slide or be fixed to each other? On mine, when you lower the chuck, the pulley goes down as well and bottoms out on the casting. It doesn't seem right to me, but I've never messed with one before.

Oh no! Found another sale that is happening Friday no pics but says vintage snap-on tool items. I don't know if it means like collectibles or tools? The one i went to plus the craftsman one and this one all in the same week i might be in trouble!

To sell in volume look into your local flea markets. I don't like to spend the time with dealing with it but some of my fellow pickers around me swear by the method.

I found it! I think I might be interested in it. Looks like a good candidate to mount in my current service truck. Also It will not break my retirement, it will be a company expense.

A few odds and ends from a garage sale "last day" pick last weekend. I lightly cleaned the tools to find out the brand. I will pick out a few things to keep and sell the rest. Miscellaneous wrenches, some chisels, some auger bits, used pressure gauge, $10 total. Let me know if you see anything you need.

BC-it's yours if you want it! I'll even give you a fellow GJer "good deal" price. Let me know if you want to swing by this weekend to check it out.

my pedestal quest continues... 3 more to go that I really want! Drove 75 miles to pick this up in DE.

Now that's just to cool! Nice find!

Oh, now I get it. Your "retirement" plan is to feed off of fellow retirees.

My number is somewhere around 99.99% (I gave a few away). :scared:

I've traded more tools than sold, and sold more non-tools than I've traded or sold tools... Mostly the "hobby" pays for itself, except lately I've been too busy at work to focus much on selling.... :dunno:

I've probably kept more tools than I've sold (my garage is definitely getting fuller) but I've also probably sold enough to cover 50-60%% of my outlay.
