"All-American" was an economy label that was used for a short time in the early 70's (possibly very late 60's as well). It was created by Waterloo and sold at various retail stores (auto parts stores, dime stores, and department stores) as a way to get their name out to the average homeowner. Most people were unaware that they were building the Craftsman tool chests and this was a way for them to expand beyond industrial use. By the mid-70's it was gone. There is very little info out there about the brand beyond word of mouth, little to none on the internet outside of GJ. Nice score.

Thanks jakemac, I had never heard of it before I found this box. Oddly enough they had another one just like it but it didn't have enough tools for the price they wanted. If it's still there when they mark it half off I will probably pick it up too.

No decent sale this weAkend so I turned to CL for my rust addiction. I picked up this old carpenter chest for $150.00 Lots of history in it. Old steel wheels repurposed drawers represent a time when every thing was used and reused. So well built it could easily last a century .

Now for the content of the box. Over 80 items. Most need some attention and most likely this was not the original content of the box. I'm sure it's been cherry picked and reloaded several times. there are some real nice pieces here like plomb wooden handle screw drivers as well as HD Smith, Early Ridgid wrench, Starrett scraper plane , Trimo , Stanley, Gellman, Keen Kutter, Buck Brothers, RR branded monkey wrench's Disston and many other brands. I should have a lot of fun with this . I don't know how I will come out in the end but the pleasure and enjoyment is priceless

I had to run out to the auto parts store today to get another headlight for SWMBO's Outback (3 now in 12 months). Oh look, there a sale just past the auto parts store. Okay, five miles past the auto parts store, but I'm still counting it as"on the way".

The wife was after the guy to clean out his garage so they could stay prepping the place for sale. He had mostly old doors, windows, and trim, not too many tools. I poked around a bit and found these three pliers:

Facom No 180 water pump pliers
10WR Vice Grips, DeWitt-made
Peugeot 889 lineman pliers

c48c97edc58f4684ebac5ed8ee023ce5.jpg

8-ft of 1.5" round pine trim. I'm going to use this to add to my box end wrench display rack in the garage.

Total price: $8

I have to give credit to Outlawmws for much of what little I know about All-American. He identified the first box I bought and pointed me in Waterloo's direction.

BB - Its a good thing that you're retired. I went poaching over in your area this morning and had a great day. More about it later.

No worries, Jake. There's were a few nearby that weren't "on the way" for me. Same goes for next weekend--I'll be out in the woods with the Boy Scouts, so have at it!

Here's my find for today. Cornwell TR3 1/4 ratchet. Was in a pawn shop, marked $15, was locked up. Talked down to $5, walked right outside gave 2 swift raps on curb, voila...works again.

I took it apart and the grease inside was hard as a rock. Now it works like brand new!

Busy day! only 5 planned stops, first 2 were good, 2nd to last I got some free stuff,

Then I had to drive over an hour round trip to get 2 tires for SWMBO's mini van but these were near new on rims already. one of her old ones had a broken belt and the line is discontinued. She want to dump it later summer for a new to her car, so I didn't want to have to spend a bunch of $$ on 2 new ones, when these were available for 100 for the pair, mounted ready to go and at least 80% tread left... This will also get a full sized spare under it. (The good discontinued tire...)

On the way back I stopped at a too and picked-up 2 body dollies, a tiny wood handle screw driver, and a set of Craftsman fractional drill bit that I already gave to my son to keep with his battery drill he got for xmas (So no pics and I forgot to shoot the tiny driver. look for it in the tiny tools thread soon.)

.

Stop one had this cool Eico powersupply/Battery charger. 6 or 12 volts and variable output. - This one may become my E-tank power supply. nine bucks

attachment.php

Most stuff came from stop 2:

a pair of cool antique/vintage dually castors that should cleanup fine.

attachment.php

Krauter 5-1/2" slipjoints, pwrKraft NN, 2 pr small/tint Vise grips, 10" Stilson pipe wrench (Probably the best condition wood handle I now own...) Ford wrench with most of hte original black paint on it, 4" adjustable, crescent and the Diamond is way thicker that any other 4" I own. 2 Williams tappets, and a set of 1/4" hex drive sockets in a cool tray.

attachment.php

PowrKraft pedistal grinder, Fairriers and stright peen hammers:

attachment.php

4" Jorgensen and 3" Brinks & Cotton C clamps, and a 24" bar clamp

attachment.php

All this stop 2 stuff was $20.

and at an estate sale run by one of my regulars, (clean out day) this was all free:

An old too box tray (I'm thinking this MAY go to one of the late 30's early 40's craftsman tops. the paint is right...) A chain with hook and ring, a 48 VDC telephone power supply and a small squirrel cage fan. 3000 rpm, and 120 V.

Looks like some good stuff!

I had no luck today at the auction. Although I ended up with $23 of non tool purchases. Hoping the flea market on Monday is better. I may have to check CL as well.

Found the sander on a pedestal! 6x48", 9" disc, and a 1/2HP motor! Only 12 minutes from home too!

Still need pedestals for the Band Saw, Alien Head Planer, and the Shaper, plus a grinder stand or two, to have them all! In the past week I've picked up the sander, 6 1/8" jointer, and the 18" scroll saw... and a month ago picked up a CMan 100 saw on a pedestal too! 3 out of 4 in power bronze too!

The holiday weekend was looking pretty bleak for sales in my area, so I was girding myself to sleep in today. Fortunately I got a tip from joe.striper about a private CL sale that was outside my roaming zone and made an appointment with the seller for 9am today. It was an hour drive through BlueBomber's territory, but the pictures were too enticing to stay away. Once I got there and saw the guy's shop and basement I couldn't stop drooling. Only a few select things were for sale, but the rest of the place was packed with rubies and diamonds. Leg vises, a Buffalo Forge DP, a block grinder w/original stand, several Delta DP's, two 1930's Delta Unisaws, vises hiding under a workbench, all in working order and none for sale, and it just wouldn't stop. The entire basement was packed solid. It was toolgasm after toolgasm !

I originally went for the vises he had listed because he was selling them cheap, and then I figured that I'd check out the other things. We talked for an hour about tools. I ended up spending $136
(less than a ******, but a similar happy ending :lol_hitti)

I didn't get much, but I got good. :D

a pr. Of LYONS bench legs
Franklin Tools (Buffalo, NY) #3 3-1/8" vise ($10)
Parker #2 3-1/8" vise ($15)
- (Both vises have issues, documented in the vise thread)
Proto (USA) #1230 15/16" combo wrench
2 unknown crowsfoot "bracelet" sets (will go in the glove compartment of the truck)
Fairmount #1045 body spoon
Fairmount #1050 body spoon
unmarked short body dolly

AND THEN ............
I he asked me if there was anything in particular that I was looking for.
I told him about my Craftsman/Darra James table saw that needed a new motor. After explaining that I needed a 1-1/2hp 1725rpm motor, he said that he was pretty sure he didn't have one. Still, he showed me a 6' shelf packed with motors, and guess what I spotted in the back of one of the shelves. :eyecrazy:

Yup. :bounce:
Dayton 1-1/2hp 115/230v 1725rpm

Let the negotiating begin !
I was honest and told him I didn't have much money and that it was worth more, but asked if he would take $70 (thinking he'd say no and start at $150). I could go up to a hundred, maybe sqeeeeeeeeeze one-twenty, but that would be tapping a dry well until my next check comes in. To my surprise, delight, and gratitude he took my first offer. :rocker:

Which means that my last excuse for working on the TS is now gone.

I can't thank Joe enough for pointing the CL ad out to me, I wasn't sure I'd ever find that motor at a good price.

I have more pics than just the family portrait, but posting w/ a tablet means multiple posts. Sorry.

On the way home from my tool tryst, I decided to divert up to NH to an estate sale that didn't look too promising in the ad. But since I was out of the house I figured, what the heck.

I was right, there weren't any tools, but I did dig around in the greenhouse/garage basement.
For $5 I found :

3 shipping totes (once owned by a nationally known hardware co-op)(easily repaired)
API Solderless Terminal kit
used Quaker State gallon can

The lids for the totes had to be dug out of the dirt, they were being used as floor pieces under the greenhouse tables.

Not as orgasmic as the first sale, but a satisfying day all around.
Now, bring on the chocolate bunnies !!!!!

I have been told that the thicker adjustable wrenches are pre vanadium and needed the extra thickness to be strong enough to not crack. I have had several of the thicker ones and a fair amount of them were cracked on the static jaw.

Twas kind of a bust this weekend.

Spent $2 for automatic wire strippers and $1 for this gigantic roll of cloth. (perfect for several lifetimes worth of shop rags.)

OK guys, I was just wanting to do some reading and clicked on the last page of this post and I have this question. I understand that many of you are tool collectors and are looking for just that one item. But it seems to me that some of you are buying these tools for resale. If so, where is the best market to resell these tools and do you clean them up? Make sure you complete a set thereby increasing the value over a single tool? I am sure somewhere in the previous 96 pages there is an explanation of this. I am curious to know if this fun past time can be profitable, or if you all just can't have enough hand tools!

1. We sale because it's fun and entertaining.
2. We sale to find cool stuff you just don't see in any other venue.
3. Our goal is not to resell but we're not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. If I see a "benjamin" laying on the sidewalk I'll bend over and pick it up. For the same reason if there's a g-sale item with with meaningful profit potential I'll grab it to help fuel #1 and #2.

If the goal is profit vs fun we probably wouldn't do it.

OK, last post I'm going to do tonight lol. Stopped in at a thrift shop by me and there sitting on the floor near the register was a toolbox with a price of 28 dollars on it. I opened it did a quick shuffle through it and decided to take it home with me.
SK 42470 1/2 ratchet
SK 45170 3/8 ratchet
Thorsen 77jc 3/8 ratchet
Powr Kraft 84h4845 3/8 ratchet
Powr Kraft 4825 3/8 flex head ratchet
SK 3,6,12" 3/8 extensions
5" powr Kraft extension
Snapon svx5 5" 1/2 extension
Diamond alloy 10" adjustable wrench
Lots of various USA made wrenches
Proto slip joint pliers
Sears hex key set
Lincoln blow gun
Stanley awl
Lastly the box is an "all-American" which obviously is made in usa

Nice score! My favorite is the slip joint pliers.

I buy to resell 3/4 of what I buy, but I do make every rusty tool as good as new as I can. Evaporust and a polishing pad on my block grinder for everything. 99% go on ebay, anything I dont want to ship goes on CL.

According to the 59/60 Power Tool catalog, I'm looking for a 2392 Shaper and a 02226L pedestal. There was one for sale in NJ that I missed out on, and the guy still hasn't taken down the listing... *******.

Speaking for my self only, I both collect and resale. I have upgraded my "user" tools to a point of near satisfaction some years ago. Every once in a while I find something better than what I have or don't have... For the collection , well I have many sets of things that I am collecting , types, brands, makers...Once a set is complete I sell or just keep. I can't keep everything because I buy so much. The stuff I sell allows me to keep buying and has fully funded my roth IRA for a decade .
I clean most stuff but some items you just simply don't touch. One example of that is a 175 year old Bailey block plane I picked for 2.50 and sold for 200.00. While this is not a typical sale , it does happen. I spend on average around 600 a month and bring in about 3500.00 . It can be a lot of work at time but I enjoy it a lot. It's a grand hobby and would encourage any one that has a passion for tools to do it.
I have a great respect for the old iron and the men that built it and used them before us. They worked in tough places in tough time doing tough work. Their legacy is the tools we seek.
As for where to sell... well that's the part you have to figure out for yourself. ebay , CL and FB is the easy answer. Getting to know collectors in you area is may be the best. Knowing what they look for and what they will pay will be your best bet. Pay attention at auctions and sells to what people buy. Talk to them about items they buy and their collections. when you go to enough sales you will see the same faces. Certain auctions bring certain buyers. Those are my favorites. the old tool guys come out of the wood work. I don't go to those auctions empty handed.
I didn't mean to write a book here and this is only my take and how I work. There are many ways to work this hobby. hoarders, collectors, flippers or just the casual buyer to save a few bucks. The important thing to remember is have fun and be respectful at the sales.

Let the auction season begin here. 6 inches of snow today but got some good deals.
uploadfromtaptalk1459043812215.jpg
Spent $110 but it is worth it alot of older USA made item. Here are some out of the norm items
uploadfromtaptalk1459043872338.jpg
From left to right a snap on plug socket, Mac socket I am assuming for wing nuts but what do you guys think. Next is a carburetor bending socket or that is what it says on it. Next is an odd socket maybe for a valve cad plated. And last is a PWA socket with an odd angle appears to be brown and Spencer. The logo is b in a triangle.
uploadfromtaptalk1459044056861.jpg
This last one was the icing on the cake for the day, almost looked over them. Tucked in the bottom of an old ammo container. Spent $7.50. Here is a closer look
1600c82cb01610fcfb4fe01c348d400a.jpg
9/16" tang drive plombs and looks to be a match set. Cant find the stamping that matches these look older than ones on alloy artifacts any ideas on age pre 1924?

Krauter 5-1/2" slipjoints, pwrKraft NN, 2 pr small/tint Vise grips, 10" Stilson pipe wrench (Probably the best condition wood handle I now own...) Ford wrench with most of hte original black paint on it, 4" adjustable, crescent and the Diamond is way thicker that any other 4" I own. 2 Williams tappets, and a set of 1/4" hex drive sockets in a cool tray.

I have been told that the thicker adjustable wrenches are pre vanadium and needed the extra thickness to be strong enough to not crack. I have had several of the thicker ones and a fair amount of them were cracked on the static jaw.

John

Makes sense; the longer/larger ones I have are older also.

I found a Patent on the small socket set; Not surprised to see it was assigned to Duro:

Publication number US2065340 A
Publication type Grant
Publication date Dec 22, 1936
Filing date Oct 5, 1935
Priority date Oct 5, 1935
Inventors Peterson Edward Henry, Norris F Mcnaught
Original Assignee Duro Metal Prod Co

The patent is on the tray itself.

I also found another set where I keep this type of set. No patent on that one but clearly the same.

Gotcha Rick, I thought you had a shaper and needed a stand. I have a pedestal top plate for one style shaper but i have a different shaper so im looking for a stand as well. I need stands for a 4" joiner, alien head planer, belt/disc sander and the shaper.

Heading out on a multi-state trip for work this week. My goal is to pick up something in every city I visit, as I head to and from the airports. The abiding parameters here are the finds must be transportable on an airplane, or easy to mail home to myself.

First stop--under 24 hrs in Oklahoma City, OK.

Sales are still pretty much non-existent around these parts. Did find one yesterday. Basically one card table with about 10 things on it. Gave the 3 dollar asking price. Didn't really know what I had till a got home and looked it up. Dazor with around 18 in bulbs....and about a 4 ft reach. :eyecrazy:

According to the 59/60 Power Tool catalog, I'm looking for a 2392 Shaper and a 02226L pedestal. There was one for sale in NJ that I missed out on, and the guy still hasn't taken down the listing... *******.

I'm fairly sure I have the shaper and stand (and a bunch of cutters, etc.) you are looking for in my storage shed. Excellent condition, gray color. Only about 3000 miles from you!

Well, hit 3 swap meets and went back to the estate sale from Thurs. this weekend (wife and I are going out of town this week, and are trying to get out of each others hair) and pulled all this:

Proto LA driver, Snap on 1/4 extention, MAC socket, SK Wayne adaptor (need for a set), Millers falls nail puller (pretty beat up, but only .25), tiny Blue Point wrench, dual marked Proto Plomb 5/16 wrench and perfect Stanley #68 folding ruler.

From the estate sale, all sorts of misc. highlights being the Union dividers and crowntop tip cleaner.

Finally, todays:

Nice Heller file, Proto LA socket, Rigid strap wrench and working Simpson 240, which came with spare set of leads and the remains of the original box.

Lucked out and got this garden tractor cart for free from a yard sale that had just ended. It's pretty heavy duty, all steel, tilts, and made in the USA!
