Still need to add the down spouts. I ordered prefab offsets, but they are off and I'll need to adjust those first. It'll be a four day weekend coming up and I hope to finish then.
Then it's clean up time, as you can see, the front has become a catch all and I need to tame it. The Listas will stay there as I restore them. I'm working on listing items that I'll be selling to make room for my future estate sale finds

Updates please.
Ok, here's a small update of the what's going on.
The roof is done, except for gutter caps and downspouts, but it's serving its purpose well.
I picked up a 1/2 ton electric chain hoist at a yard sale last month, took a chance on it as I could not get more than a hum out of it. The guy had a start cap that was too big, I played around with it, found the right start cap and it worked!........ For a very short time until the magic smoke came rolling out. Lucky for me it was from the brand new start cap.

So, back to trouble shooting. Everything and my electrical friends said it was the centrifugal start switch not opening. Well, it don't have one.
Let me introduce the Sinpac switch, a solid state switch that is used in place of a centrifugal start switch. I've never run across one before.
Anyway, it looks like a cap, is mounted right next to the start cap and cost $ 80, which is cheap. Start cap was only $ 10.
I also split the motor from the gearbox and ran it by itself to confirm no issues with the winding, it checked out ok. Hooked up the new switch and cap and it ran great, no smoke.
I never envisioned so many wires and such on one of these hoist. There's brake solenoids, transformers and one big contactor that controls everything from the push button switches.
Now I will paint it to match the steel frame as it will hang around there all the time. I need to get a chain bag for it.
One thing fixed and about 30 or so to go.
Not a bad deal for a total of $160.

OK guys, need your opinion.
I have this chunk of oak that I plan on using for a base for my anvil, I was planning on using as is, but now I want to square it up.
Any ideas on cutting square using a chainsaw? I not sure how successful I'll be cutting it this way.I'm looking for a mill around here, but they are far and few between.

CB: I congratulate you on sticking with your design and finishing your carport. I bet it might be one of your favorite spots to just enjoy the view of the yard and shop with your favorite beverage.
as far as cutting OAK with a chainsaw i'm sure it can be done if you have a decent saw and a SHARP blade. you might have to re sharpen it after cutting one end before starting on the other one though because that is some tough stuff.
an outdoor anvil on a stump and a vise mounted to a nice stand would be great for MAN CARPORT STUFF when you get time to set them up.

Drives, thanks for stopping in. It has very much become my favorite spot, as it does have a decent view of the house and property and is next to the barn, so my wife stops in.
It's one of those " how did I do without" for so long.
Yes, I look forward to getting my 8" Columbian vise mounted and the base for the anvil done.
It'll really pay off this year during the rain and the sun.
Just need to button down, clean up and build out my planned projects.

If you can't find someone to cut the stump, maybe you could make a jig out of 2x4s so you could come from both sides and get it close to square? Or maybe buy one of those old 2 man saws and get the wife to help you???

You'll just have to see for what it is, no sugar coating here. If you are OCD and it just kills you, I won't be insulted if you start in on fixing up.

I'm hear you. Once you get up here you'll see it's not perfect either. I do have some OCD but budget doesn't allow me to fix my place so. I like the key to that lock.
Yes, I'll be reporting in making sure you stay on track and don't wander off into left field. Even though you have a bigger place than do I think we are on the same page as far as finishing projects and having a more usable space to work just on different scales.
I was thinking the same thing, the 2x4 jig or guide. It don't have to be dead square, a little character would be great. I plan on wrapping a couple of steel bands and using some square head lags to attach.
It would have to be a two man chainsaw.
Thanks for the comments, been working on the Listas/vidmars for a while and two more waiting to be started. That will be all until I stumble on the next one.
We have a place in KY, and we're not sure if we are still moving or not. It's aggervating, I have a2000 SF metal,building setting virtually empty while I bang around down here. Great neighbors though, there always around keeping a eye on it.
We just have to wait on property vaule in Fl. To rise a little so we don't take a beating selling here.

Cut one end of it as close to square as you can. Then rig up a jig/sled type doodad so you can use a router with a bit in it to trim the other end flat.
I didn't describe what I'm trying to do right.
I want to square the entire log, not just the ends.
I was thinking of what Strouty said, rig up a wood jig as a guide. I think once I get one side straight, the others should be a liitle easier. I'm sure it'll take all of what my 18" Sthil will do.
Worst case, I'll have a good supply of BBQ wood.

I don't know where I got Ohio from. 
Here's the latest additions to my shop.
Picked up a Stephen Bader 2"x72" belt grinder and a buffalo drill press at a online auction.
Been lusting for a belt grinder for a while, was planning on buying the wheels and just build one and then this popped up.
It came with the platen and 3/4" wheel attachment.
I need to build a tool rest for it. It runs great and just eats the metal up. The belt changes are so simple too.
I bought the drill press to get the 1-1/2HP Baldor motor and the speed drive to put on my Powermatic drill press.
I may pare down my CM block collection, keeping some just for specific wheels/wire wheels and such.
Now to use the belt grinder to get some other projects done.

A little update on my plans for the shop. Taumac came by this weekend and I had him help me move my rear bench seat back in my Mega cab, that thing must weigh 200 lbs. I was looking forward to getting it off my makeshift bench of a base cabinet. That and bouncing off ideas with a fellow garage brother, was coming up with some good ideas.
Went to clean out the base cab only to find a rat nest in my rag pile, immediate out with the cabinet.
Open space, bare concrete, seeing this just accelerated my plans in my head to the point of updating a floor plan I done for the shop 10 years ago, with revisions of course.
My plan of having my hand tools in a Lista set up is finally taking shape. I'm going to move a couple of drawers of tools from the Mac tech 1000 into the Listas just to,confirm these will work.ill keep the older Mac top box and will place on the Lista 8 &9 drawer as a base.
I'll continue my arrangement I started a few years ago, moist of the boxes along one wall with a couple about 3' away creating a aisle.
My son left a section of pallet racking when he moved and doesn't have a spot for it, so in the shop it be going. That will take care of a good chunk of stuff on the floor and get my wood off the floor too.
I'm getting rid of two benches, one is my sons, the other is just a old style metal leg with wood planks . In this area my lathe and two drill press will reside. I also have a four box Kennedy stack, two boxes will also be in this area and will house lathe tools, drill bits and such.
I will build my years long planned grinder station, with a rotating table. There be four block grinders and my 2"x 72" belt grinder will be on the end, not part of the table. Imagine being able to use a couple of my blocks not just sitting on the end on my welding table.
Anyway, I've attached the floor plan so you can follow with me as I go.
It won't be fast, as there is a lot of fixing, fabbing, cleaning luring and painting to be done, and I don't plan on rolling around 600 lbs of boxes until I'm ready to place them.
My shop is pretty totaled right now, had the roof project last year, been busy with work and just buying and cramming for a couple years. Just time to put it all together and I really feel good about how things are going to laid out.
Don't pay attention to the shapes outside the drawing, just temporary holding spots.

Looking back through your pictures after seeing the place in person that cover area is great. I don't know how you lived without it. I more than happy to give my layout ideas. What's good about me seeing it is that I'm all about a lot in a small space and getting most out of it. My job has also taught me a lot about space efficiency and productivity. In the space you have people tend to spread out cause they all this empty space but what you need to do is think your still back in your 2 car garage. Maximize every square inch you have. For your place I really really like the layout I showed you. I really thing it will work for your space. You got stuff on casters so nothing to hurt in trying it. You actually might like it.
Moved the pallet racking from the shed up to the shop. It was bought in two 4' sections. I trimmed up the end as it had been cut before and wasn't square.
My portaband makes quick work of this. Ends ground and ready to weld.
Welded up. One nice thing on the thin steel it's easy to get full penetration.
Ground down for clearance of the cross beams.
My color scheme for the shop will be heavy in blue with black trim.
Going to paint the rack a medium blue, debating wether to paint uprights black.

Im having trouble deciding what color/where to paint mybrack right now too. Last rack i did was black uprights with red beams, i immediately wished i had done the uprights red instead for better sight. I would walk right in to them in the dark/low light pathway i had with the lights off. Now im debating colors on the new rack.
Great job putting those uprights back together, cant waitvto see what you do with the color!

. I was thinking the same thing on the uprights, although these will reside in the corner of the shop, but never know when it could be moved.
In my mind, I'm not crazy about the black beams for some reason, might just go all blue.
Can you imagine People
who stumble across this site and read about us agonizing over pallet rack paint colors.

[emoji38]its hard to understand until you spend two days prepping a rack, the mental anguish one goes through in determining pallet colors.
I did consider safety blue, machine gray or my favorite, institution green as solid single colors. I even thought about safety yellow for about a second but i cant stand yellow.

CB: I haven't painted one of my pallet racks yet and some definitely could use it. the thought of taking them apart and putting them back up again will have to wait until I move.
one nice thing about where you live is if you want to paint at least the temps are not below 50 often like in my area that limits me from painting anything about 5 months a year in my unheated shop.
you have so many cool old cabinets that seem to be a variety of colors so you might want to go with a black or grey to show off the cabinets colors instead of the racks, but definitely your call. your garage your color because you are the one to look at it daily. do you have all the wiring in place for your machines before you put the racks up? your layout looks pretty sweet and I remember that grinder stand you built for 4 to 6 blocks or grinders and it will rock if they all have different wheels on them. good luck

The belt grinder was a long wanted thing, but it'll come in handy building the other stuff for the shop. What a sickness, huh, buying shop machines to build other shop things. Now I need a bead blast cabinet, and then...........
I would like to set up to play around with some hot irons work someday, really enjoy watching it done.
