The sound of heavy equipment rumbling and beep-beep-beeping always causes Ash, my wife's cat, to go to this Happy Place. Unfortunately today the heavy equipment is not on my property but on the property behind us.

So did you spark a trend in your area?
With those white walls and all those lights you'll be able to find a needle on the floor.

I ask because I am considering a remote solution for the external lights for the barn.

No trend that I know of. Ha!

The neighbors that are putting the fear in the cat are clearing an area of trees so as to allow them to have horses.

He has a garage/shop on the property and I think he's made an airplane at some point. We just met about a week ago when he and his bride showed up on my front porch to ask me if I knew where the property line between our lots was.

I did.

The lighting is getting there! I am very pleased with the interior light plan. Still a bit to do.

Weather forecast was for rain to start around 1 pm today and the weatherman had it correct this time. Most of the Electrician's exterior work was done before the rain arrived.




The remaining fans in the Auto/Metal Shop area were installed. The speed controllers for the fans here and in the Woodshop arrived in the mail after the Electrician had left for the day.






Fans installed in both the Auto/Metal Shop and the Mezzanine. The Hunter fans in the Mezzanine are over 20 years old and their boxes had never been opened. I had bought them for the upstairs in my house and never got around to installing them.






The Electrician tidying up the circuit for the electric chain hoist.






Putting in a permanent light in the Tornado Shelter.

The best part of the Electrician's work today was installing the LED Floodlights on both ends of the building.





The floodlight on the front of the building is mounted in the center of the wall within a couple of feet of the roof. The floodlight on the rear is mounted so as to light up all the upcoming driveway and loading dock as best as can be done without bothering the neighbors.






After he installed the floodlights, the Electrician and I were trying to figure out if he had them pointed where they would be the most effective. That was hopeless during the day. He left his ladder on the back of the building because he was sure that floodlight would need to be adjusted. I was to go out this evening and see how things looked.

We were expecting the rain to continue all day once it started but it actually cleared off in the later afternoon. As a result of the weather clearing, I was able to get out this evening and check things out in a reasonably dry environment. [This is expected to change late tonight early tomorrow morning as heavy rain & stormy weather is currently in Alabama and headed our way.]

After checking things out after sundown, I think the Electrician nailed it on the back of the building. The floodlight back there is lighting things about as well as can be done without bothering the neighbors to the north.

The floodlight on the front of the building needs to point down a bit more.

These LED floods really put out the light! The main reason I went with them was to get an "instant on" when I flipped the switch . I didn't want to have to wait for any bulb to get "warmed up" in order to get the area lite up.

Looking good Scott! I have a platonic_solid "lite" lighting plan in my garage and I will say the guy knows his lighting! I say "lite" plan because he just did some basic calculations for my simple design, but I'm very happy with the results.

My number one helper was on the scaffolding for a couple hours yesterday painting while I stayed on the ground and rolled her around. She is the hardest working person I have ever met, couldn't have done our building without her.

The floor got a caulk test yesterday. I squirted some on the floor by accident, it wiped right off with a paper towel and no residue stuck like it would to regular concrete. Water beads up, but it's not slippery. Still needs another curing day, though we put the camper and everything else back inside.

We are on the other end of the rain, quite swampy here now. Looking at your pictures, you are ready for a driveway. What's the timeline on that?

Glad to hear that your floor seems to be working out.

Platonic Solid did a great job on my light plan. I had to make a couple of small modifications due to interference with other components that were installed but I tried to follow it as best as I could. I am extremely pleased with the outcome.

We are getting close to driveway work. I thought we might get some dirt moved around last week but that didn't happen. I haven't heard anything from the builder as to what the plan is for this coming week.

I have requested that we do the concrete in front of the building as a first phase. Then we would have a place to park vehicles during the second phase. The second phase will make the house garage inaccessible to traffic.

Just a mechanic... Ha! You are too modest - what a great set of skills to have!

I would think Arizona would be a great place to do VFR flying! I rarely get to do that anymore. I flew an H-53 - the only helicopter time in my logbook - for about an hour just before I left the Navy in 1986. What a hoot! Low and slow; just flew around north of Philadelphia and gawked at stuff. Really enjoyed it.

Last night we had our first good rain since sculpting the terrain on the north side of the building to promote better rain runoff.






When I looked into the Tornado Shelter this morning I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed to see a bit of water staining the previously dry floor. We had gotten about an inch of rain last night. Previously an inch of rain would have resulted in a significant amount of water in the bottom of the Tornado Shelter so progress has been made.

More rain is forecast for today and tonight.

Another inch of rain last night and...





...we have about 1/4-inch of water in the Tornado Shelter. This was quickly pumped out. Although disappointing to have the water in the shelter, it is clear that our work to deal with the rain runoff helped a lot! A couple of inches of rain in the past would have resulted in at least 6-inches in the shelter. More work to be done to see if we can prevent this situation next time around.

Today my son and I broke down the scaffolding and moved it out of the Woodshop. This will allow me to use the scaffolding to get the Beam Trolley and Chain Hoist onto the yellow I-Beam.






With the scaffolding out of the Woodshop, I was able to get a little better picture of the lights and fans.

It being a Sunday, there was not going to be any activity on the building site. The area between the road and the Lone Beech Garage was no longer muddy. I decided to use the building to change the oil & grease the chassis in my 2000 Ford F150 pickup.




My son gave me some guidance to center the truck over the Tornado Shelter.






A recently acquired Harbor Freight 5-Gallon Oil Drain Dolly was used to make easy work of this maintenance.


Got the truck in and out without making a mess. I can not wait to get the Lone Beech Garage fully operational!

awesome to get to use it, hows the height in the tornado shelter for working? I was wondering about the depth relative to the cars.

also, any thoughts of putting guide rails down to steer you around the shelter or would that be too intrusive?

If you do decide to add some lighting control the Lutron stuff from Lowes works pretty well, I use the switches in a lot of places in my home. Along with some extra parts this looks like it would allow you to control the lights from your phone/ tablet.

You might want to install a convex mirror on the wall or ceiling so when you are by yourself you can still get centered when you drive on. Be really bad if you fell in

Mine is centered in the doorway so it makes it easy.

I knew water was an issue where I live so I had to install a sump pump

The shelter is little deep but additional concrete will be going into the floor area when the steps are formed up on the end closest to the garage door.

I'm still thinking about possible methods & aides that would assist approaching the shelter solo.

One can never really say for sure but I'm confident that the water is finding its way in from the outside foundation wall via the 4-inch PVC duct pipe that will provide ventilation in the shelter. I am assuming some of the rain runoff follows the foundation wall and then, where the pipe penetrates the foundation wall, the runoff follows the path of least resistance to the shelter. I think this problem can be solved but we shall see.

LED lights:
Your points are certainly correct. However for me, since I don't see leaving these lights on all night a normal practice, the main advantage of the LED's was the instant on; full bright. When I flip the switch I will want the light on full NOW not after a 5 minute warm-up.

Monday - April 4, 2016

As a magnificent spring morning dawned in Peachtree City, I looked out onto the building site and saw...

Nothing happening.

Well shoot.

A few minutes later a friend called an asked if I'd like to meet him and some other guys at a local Starbucks and chat over coffee. That sounded good so off I went.

A half hour later my cell phone rang and it was the crew that was going to paint my Mezzanine stairs. I excused myself and returned home.




When I arrived the crew was busy prepping the stairs for the deck paint. This was followed by a lot of tedious work carefully painting everything under the structure.






These guys will return tomorrow and finish this job by noon.


Tomorrow the Electrician will be putting in a trench from the utility pole to the building.

Another trick you might consider for aligning your cars over the pit, is to use one or two door mirrors mounted sideways on the garage door. They measure about 12 X 48 and should fit on each section of your door. I have two mounted vertically on the end of wall of my garage to line up my cars, as I pull them in, to a Park Smart pad on the floor. You could us some strong tape to experiment with positioning before screwing them to the door. You can probably get them for for about $10 to $15 each.

This Pipe? How is it finished above grade? That is probably your problem but i also noticed you didnt apply any water proofing to the foundation below grade. Concrete is very porous and will absorb lots of water. Not only will water follow the inside of the pipe, but if the seal around the pipe is not water tight the water will follow the outside of the vent pipe. Just something to think about.

If we can give the water an easier path to follow than it is taking to get to the shelter, I think we will solve the problem. That may be challenging with the pipe - apparently - sitting on top of the footer.

The Mezzanine Stairs painting crew returned this morning and completed all that they could do at this time.







They will return tomorrow to clean up all the plastic and masking materials. When, in the very near future, the support structure is added under the stair stringers, the painters will return to finish painting that bit and then they will be done.

The Electrician was on the building site early to dig a trench from the utility pole to the building.






With that accomplished it is just a matter of waiting for the local utility to place the cable in the trench. I hope they will get that done by the end of this week.


Meeting scheduled for late tomorrow with the builder, the concrete man and the dirt moving guy to discuss the upcoming exterior concrete work.

Ran through this thread start to bottom over the last few days: really nicely thought-out build, with great documentation and execution!


Not sure if I missed it, but you might consider emergency lighting for the tornado pit, since sitting out a tornado warning would be such a likely time to lose power. You can find some pretty decent LED/battery boxes pretty cheaply these days.

Will be following the rest... Can't wait 'till you start filling this place in!

I see the problem. The seal on the underside of the pipe. When you lay it on the footer like that the concrete has a problem getting in the area below the haunches of the pipe. The solution would be to excavate around the pipe where it exits the foundation and seal that area with non-shrinking grout. Its less then $5 for a 60lb bag from lowes. I use it all of the time to seal pipe joint failures on stormwater structures. Thats going to be cheaper then tearing up your whole yard again. Eventually it will develop a sinkhole along your foundation and could cause settling/cracking of the floor in your shop.

I went through a LOT of pictures last night. When I realized the pipe was sitting right on the footer, I thought the same as you ...although I didn't have a solution. Ha!

Compounding that issue is the following. The north Shelter wall and the north building wall are pretty close together. That's why the two were poured at different times. With the vent pipe close to the surface, compaction in that area was problematic. The solution was just to make the crushed rock deeper in that area.

So once the water infiltrates the building wall, it makes its way through the crushed rock to the side of the shelter and then down the side.
