I really like the old hard hat!!! The first hard hats were ball caps dipped in oil and allowed to harden. The workers on the Hoover Dam started wearing them because of the trolley system over head used to pour the concrete was a constant threat to drop material on them. Funny Now you have to wear a hard hat just to walk on a job...

Topop101:

Although I am now in Central OH, spent most of my life in SE Ohio along the WV border. Lots of mining used to be down in that area, so when found the worn miner hard hat with carbide light, had to have it.

BTW, I think I wore thicker baseball helmets than what this old style miner cap has as protection!!!

Loaded up the family and went to the flea market this morning. Came home with a pair of much needed oil cans and a Proto feeler gauge. $4 grand total. The blue can is brand new. The guy next to him had 5 of them with no price, so I offered a buck a piece and he countered with $5 a piece. No thanks. He wasn't happy when I bought it for a buck.

Well, my morning was interesting, but it had nothing to do with tools so I'll spare you the details.

I had planned on 5 sales and a flea market today. I ended up with 3 sales and 2 TOO's, I had to skip the last 2 sales and the FM to get home (see above )

Only the first sale and the last TOO were worth bothering with.

I ended up spending $45 at the first sale and $11 at the used tool store (last stop).

First sale :
York 80 (my very first York, got it off the bench w/ the wrench bracelet from two weeks ago :))
Sears 6-20221 12-16 GA shotgun cleaning kit
(not pictured)
.......... 36" exercise trampoline (for the 2-1/2yo toddler, my 52yo a** don't jump)
.......... cushioned folding seat (to use in the canoe as an extra seat)

Used Tool Store :
SnapOn #SDD41 4-n-1 screwdriver

Well the sun came out yesterday and continued today, so a decent day.

7 planned stops one TOO that scored, the second to last stop was a Block sale.. God stuff!

I even saw Elvis! :spit: More on that later!

A couple of TOO's on the way to stop one got me nothing. as did stop one. Next stop, A TOO got some tools and a NOS mail box. (next pic; and we are due...)

Cee-Tee 5" pliers, Proto LA, and Barcalo DOE's a pair of Proto Sockets, in 3/4 & 1/2 drive. $8 for the tools and mail box.

and that was where I bumped into Elvis! He stopped while I was digging he tools out. As I was leaving I commented about what a great yard sale to attract Elvis! Elvis laughed and gave me his card. He's a (Self described) Elvis Tribute Artist (from his card)

The Clamp was cents fifty, at a panned stop

The Double boiler was a buck at the same place I got the Hudson Sprayer.

Another planned stop netted these Machine tools Lights (2 of them) and a pump for testing valves. Eight bucks

attachment.php

Four bucks for a deluxe Scrabble board. I've been watching for one of these to use the board and letters for an "art" project. I really needed the good board with dividers to do it.

attachment.php

A re-finish Project for SWMBO & my daughter. She's diggin on the stained glass doors. $5

attachment.php

And a freebee from earlier this week from My son's friend's family A really early Oscilloscope.

attachment.php

Last but not least, a collection odds and ends from an Estate sale (The one that was rained out last week) - $3 all!

The protractor head is an LS Starrett, the 3/4 extension and socket are P&C, VERY old cleaning patches (marked 25C by Gunslick, so THAT old!), A key switch, Aluminum lid (no it didn't quite fit the double boiler...), Doreman copper freeze plug, Proto caulk iron, a Thorsen Socket (3/8" in 1/2 drive, so not too common!)

I need an intervention!!

My bride of 32 years came outside to see this on my bench today. Why is this outside? Because there is no room in the garage, at all ANYWHERE.

I went back to my anvil guy at 7 am today and spent another $350 bucks. For that $$ I got this 3/4" SK and Bonney mixed socket set, a 5" Athol, 4.5" Reed, 1/2 hp Rockwell grinder with lighted shields on original cast base, Diehl grinder on cast base and this #2 Greenerd arbor press. Im thrilled about the socket set the most. It goes from 7/8ths to 2 inch

Went to an awesome estate sale this morning.

Nice haul Smoke.

I made one stop this morning and picked up a few items. A couple of un-pictured spring clamps, no-name pitman arm puller, 6" Petersen welding clamp, Proto torque screwdriver (older model but looks new) Snap-on nut driver, 1/2" ratchet spinner, cotter pin puller and comically large SDD520 screwdriver, and a Craftsman ratchet.

Finally, a cool old Yale lock with key. It took me a moment to figure out how to open the lock. Once the key is inserted into the cylinder the key and cylinder push into the lock body about 1/8" lifting the shackle, and then the key, cylinder and shackle all rotate together to open the lock.

$18 total.

Still recovering from surgery so I didn't feel like walking the Raceway Park swap meet. My nephew went and he knows I collect these little boxes so he picked up this little KRA 255, 1970 for me. For $10 it'll be a nice addition

Lots of good buys this week, with a tip of hat to PWRstroke_smoke who got the Echo chainsaw, great looking ax and a Rockwell Circular saw for a great price.

Now on to mediocre!!!

Pic 1 & 2--My track history on buying old key wind clocks is terrible. So, had to buy this New Haven Tambour #7 clock. Supposedly no key and hadn't run in years. However, when got home, heard something inside and found 2 keys. Both springs were wound tight, but fortunately not broken. Have got it to sound out the gong for the half and hour times by manually moving the clock hands, but pendulum wouldn't keep in motion to run the clock, but able to get it to run without the pendulum weight and so hoping that I can run down and unwind the spring.

Pic 3 & 4--Couple of NOS vintage projector bulbs (i.e. GE CZX/DAB and Sylvania EMM/EKS) and a Bell & Gossett Seal Kit 118681D3C

Pic 5--Buddy at sale who knows I look for butcher related items, passed on these vintage knives for me to buy. Only one knife marked, which was a USA made L, F & C Universal Carving or butcher knife.

Pic 6 & 7--Auto Vent maid o mist for steam radiator.

Mike

I hit a few sales this weekend. I picked up a Boston pencil sharpener mounted on a round steel disk. I have a Boston "desk top" sharpener and was looking for on I can mount somewhere without drilling out the rivets on mine.

I prefer the "auto feed" on my first sharpener.

At another sale I picked up a 15" Craftsman adjustable wrench for $4.00.

Pic #1 are my pencil sharpeners.
Pic #2 is the Craftsman in the drawer with his new friends.

Yes - the wooden handle on one of my pipe wrenches is purple - I didn't have any other paint available at the time.

Picked up a 624 Athol vise, needs some work. Approx 43" railroad spud wrench for Union Pacific, a 15" Crescent brand adjustable wrench, and 16' Stanley tape measure.... all for $35.

Not sure if it was cracked and fixed or there was some over splatter from welding something. See last pic - thoughts?

Sales were plentiful today and couldn't come close to hitting them all. Picked up a bunch of stuff but the high lights were a 1887 Parker Coach maker/wood workers fixed base rear swivel jaw vise model 376. Aside from some paint drips on it it's in near mint condition.
Also scored a Keen Kutter Boys axe and a Wyeth Hdw axe . Keen Kutter is from St. Louis and Wyeth is from St. Joseph, Mo.
Also a Plumb dbl bit
18 Vise Grip Adjustable wrench
little Giant Tire measuring tool
Old Union Man. Box with a leather handle
Draw knife , Hay Hooks, Ford wrenches, Stanley saw set, MF Combo square, Locks, hammers, Eagle oil can, 20lb Empire anvil, Barrel bung bore, Huge set of cast iron décor keys, Old Chase & Sanborn Coffee and a couple of boxes of other junk... the stuff you (I) always seem to end up with from auction
7 sales and one auction cost me a total of 235.... I think the vise may cover that alone... If I sell this one:drool:

Scored a 5000w Briggs generator today. Kind of "sniped" it from another guy. He looked at it and said he would be back in 5 minutes with a gas can to test it.
Well, 15 minutes later he was still not back so I asked how much it was. Guy said he wanted $100, but would take $75. I paid him so fast I almost hurt my arm.
I had just jammed it in my trunk (yes, trunk and no it was not easy getting it up and in there:scared:) when the gas can guy came back. He was not too happy that I bought it. He should have left a deposit if he really wanted it. I feel kinda bad about it, but its a tag sale, the guy who is standing there with cash and willing to buy it as-is takes priority over the guy who wants to go home and get gas so he can test equipment.

Got it home and after checking the oil and putting some gas in it, it fired right up and works great.

gen1.jpg

gen2.jpg

It's missing the rubber "feet" but those shouldn't be too hard to find or replicate. It also appears to be missing something off the side of the engine where the pull starter is. May be a trim panel or something not important because the unit works fine without it but there are screw holes with scratches around them indicating that something was there at some point.

EDIT: Nevermind, the "missing part" is the mounting location for the small fuel tank that is used when the engine is not used on a larger generator. Mine has a 7gal tank on top of the frame so no small engine mounted tank.

Looks like casting imperfection to me, I wouldn't be concerned. If I'm wrong someone will be along shortly to correct me.

After closer inspection I think so as well - it doesn't go around the corner or anything.

Either way my FIL gave me $40 for it tonight so I'm happy :)

The Union Pacific spud wrench I now have for free. I let him have it because I don't have the time do properly restore which he does, and hopefully can make $100 for himself afterwards.

Too much PBR. $4, grand total.

A couple were.

Also ended up getting 2 pairs of work bench legs from a last minute garage sale stop. Now I need to get stuff cleaned out for new work bench day. :shocking:
I usually won't pay more than a dollar for an oil can either.
Sometimes maybe $2.00, if it's in really nice shape, or new.
I even enjoy cleaning up old rusty ones.
speaking of oil cans, This was given to me by a friend a while back.

The vise will cover your $235 spent. picture # 2 is making me:drool:
You definately get a you ****.

Sat. flea market finds:

Pic 1- FREE from my vendor buddy that I took to the hoarder house (finder's fee he said).

Snap on stubby, Husky combo wrench, HexO (Blackhawk), Blackhawk ratcheting wrench, and a small c- clamp.

Pic 2- Martin 1-1/8" single end wrench, MAC angle wrench,Lectrolite battery terminal wrench, couple more small clamps, Vulcan pliers

Pics 3-6- Some unknown CHROM VANADIUM wrenches. Possibly German? There are minor decal remnants on two of them. Anyone have a clue?

$8.50 for the bunch

Joe, you could retire...

:spit:

Who made the 3/4" ratchet? SK I'm guessing?

Picked up a 624 Athol vise, needs some work. Approx 43" railroad spud wrench for Union Pacific, a 15" Crescent brand adjustable wrench, and 16' Stanley tape measure.... all for $35.

Not sure if it was cracked and fixed or there was some over splatter from welding something. See last pic - thoughts?

Looks like casting imperfection to me, I wouldn't be concerned. If I'm wrong someone will be along shortly to correct me.

After closer inspection I think so as well - it doesn't go around the corner or anything.

Either way my FIL gave me $40 for it tonight so I'm happy :)

The Union Pacific spud wrench I now have for free. I let him have it because I don't have the time do properly restore which he does, and hopefully can make $100 for himself afterwards.

Agreed, Casting slag. nice score

And Holy Crud, you guys are in full cycle this weekend!

Then there was this little gem (to me anyway). It was local made in West Seneca, NY just a few minutes away from me.

HOPPER is the brand. Never heard of it before.

I passed up the chance to buy it last year because the screwdriver blade is chipped. The vendor brought it back today and second chances at tools don't always come around so I snapped it up for $2.

Not sure but I'll bet this has something to do with PARK METALWARE/XCELITE.

I mentioned this before when talking about Meteor: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=5159386

Anyone ever seen this Hopper ratchet?

what application do you use the brass maid o mist for??

PWRstroke_smoke:

The brass maid o mist No. 7 was in the box of projector bulbs.

However, did find out they can be used on expansion tanks above boilers and will replace factory vent screws on baseboards on non pressure systems as well.
